Finally open, this is long awaited and a welcome addition to our ethnically diverse, foodie community of Corona. It certainly helps soften the blows of the merciless gut punches administered by the pandemic.
For those who know me well, they know I am all about keto. But, hey, even I draw the line for important moments such as the opening of this specialty bakery. I had to promise myself, I'll not do this often.
Moving on, here are my personal favorites:
Guava pastry. What's not to love if it has that beautiful, sweet but tangy guava paste sandwiched between layers of a light flaky pastry?
Cream Danish. A nicely textured, airy pastry with a light sugary coating and a mild, custardy cream filling. To die for? Maybe!
Portuguese custards. They actually call it something else that escapes my memory, but it is a not-overly-sweet custard, the one that has a slightly burnt top, looking like a brulee. And then there is the buttery, flakey crust, perfectly fitted into a mini tart tin. Oh curses, I want more. I am willing to bet you will too.
Personally, I prefer their bakery products to most of the ones found across the street, inside 99 Ranch Market. Granted, they are completely different offerings, even though they both fall under the umbrella of Asian baked goods.
Staffing is minimal, still too new, and working out issues during their soft opening, along with the added burden of necessary Covid restrictions. Be aware, their current pastry production and selection is less than other locations. But dont let that bother you. They are making large quantities of their most popular items. This is only temporary.
For those in a hurry, note that they admit only 10 people at a time currently. A wait in the line outside is well worth it.
If I had one gripe, it would be the location itself. On the upside, they are highly visible from the main, and very busy, thoroughfare. On the downside, the parking lot is poorly designed to accommodate the increased flow of cars they will attract, with a questionably lower number of spaces available than I would expect. I observed many customers needing to park further away and trek in. For those of us lucky enough to snag a prime parking spot, we discovered it was awkward getting in and leaving because it only has one, dead ended access.
Regardless, I say, we welcome you to Corona. We cannot help but appreciate this popular and decadent addition.
