WOW! I cannot give enough starts for this dining experience- the atmosphere was relaxed, the service was top notch, and Chef Brian served up many extraordinary dishes. The menu was personalized for our special birthday celebration. Our first dish were bites of tomato w shredded feta cheese that just melted in the mouth- mellow and slightly salty. Next is the thousand layer potato w caviar- again- WOW! Followed by quail egg ravioli, and escargot wontons. I never had escargot and was a little nervous to try but I’m so glad I did! We had the crab cake and short ribs for our entrees- they did not disappoint and a bonus- a golden baked potato! And for dessert- chocolate turtle cake. The cake was light and flavorful. The whole experience was magic! Make your reservation now- the place fills up quickly.

Came here for restaurant week. I had to ask for the special menu, it wasn’t given to me, but that could have been because the hostess seemed very young and pretty check out. Other than that, the food was tasty and the pricing was very fair for the quality of the food. We got the short rib, bass, escargot wontons (very interesting flavor experience), ravioli, and two desserts (forgettable and not worth it). The short rib was excellent, there was a lot of flavor in the sauce and the potatoes. The long beans were chewy, but in a good textured way. The sea bass was fine, subtle in flavor, it needed a little more salt and fat in the fish. It was a very pretty restaurant. I think they could use a bit more sound proofing to make cozy. I really liked it though and I would definitely go back.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – A Dining Experience Worth Savoring at 87 Sussex We decided to go to 87 Sussex for dinner and truly enjoyed every moment of it — especially the exceptional service. The food was phenomenal, and each dish felt like a thoughtful work of art. We ordered the escargot wontons, bluefin tuna, octopus carpaccio, braised short ribs, steak tartare, and fonduta ravioli — every bite was beautifully executed and bursting with flavor. For dessert, we indulged in the chocolate turtle cake and passion fruit trifle, perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. To complete the experience, we shared two bottles of Iconoclast Cabernet Sauvignon, which paired wonderfully with the meal. We were so immersed in the dining experience that we forgot to take photos of every dish, only managing a few snapshots before heading home — as we were the last guests to leave before closing. The ambience was elevated by a talented acoustic performer, giving the space a fun yet serene vibe that made the evening feel extra special. The manager, chefs, and servers were all on point — warm, professional, and incredibly attentive throughout the night. And yes, even the bathrooms were spotless — a small detail, but always appreciated. With its top-tier food, fine wine, impeccable service, and charming atmosphere, 87 Sussex delivers a high-end dining experience that’s worth every penny. Highly recommend for an unforgettable evening with family, friends, or someone special.

I really enjoyed the food and service! The dishes were delicious, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully plated. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. However, I feel that the interior design and decor could be improved, as it lacks intimacy and elegance. While the food is truly world-class, the ambiance feels secondary in comparison.

Although we are neighborhood locals, we hadn't yet tried 87 Sussex- saving the occasion for a special night out. After a memorably delicious meal, we already can't wait to be back. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and intimate. Everything we ordered was carefully prepared, perfectly balanced, and fabulously delicious. It's the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion with your loved one and enjoy creative, delicious food. Highlights of our meal were the bluefin tuna, butter poached lobster, and duck a l'orange- which I'll be dreaming about until our next visit!

Brunched in my old neighborhood with friends… 27 year old memories of Paulus Hook in the 1980s flooded back, so I have a rooting interest in the success of new restaurant, 87 Sussex in Jersey City. It was cool that they featured a homemade pop tart appetizer. Pop tarts have a pie crust/almost shortbread consistency. Unfortunately, 87 Sussex’s “pop tarts” had a flaky turnover-like consistency. It’s like going to a Bob Dylan concert expecting the radio songs, but getting a different and less appealing arrangement… and while I’m being the old man shouting on the lawn, message to 87 Sussex and other upscale restaurants, “don’t offer cinnamon buns if they’re not as good as the ones at Cinnabon at the mall.” Conversely, the cornflake encrusted french toast was terrific! With fresh fruit and whipped cream on top, they were better than the French toast at Raymond‘s IMO (although Raymond‘s original recipe might be just as good). Our friends liked their lobster eggs Benedict with its presentation on a biscuit, though it was hard crusted and on the verge of being stale. The corned beef hash and hen egg casserole was ok, but as opposed to the cubed Hormel meat you remember from childhood, this version used shredded corn beef that was drier and slightly chewier…and although I typically prefer quality over quantity, 1 egg on top is not enough, especially if you’re sharing with your spouse. 87 Sussex features a beautiful interior and a nicely attentive waiter. If they make a few tweaks to the menu, I can then recommend putting up with the lack of parking to get a great dining experience.

Nestled in the heart of Jersey City, 87 Sussex delivers a refined dining experience with a menu that artfully balances elegance, bold flavor, and creative presentation. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance feels upscale yet inviting — perfect for brunch with a touch of luxury. We began with the Bluefin Tuna on Crispy Sushi Rice, which was nothing short of exquisite. The textures were layered beautifully — the crunch of the rice paired with the velvety tuna, brightened by the avocado wasabi crème. Brunch isn't complete without cocktails, and the Mimosa Flight was a refreshing start. The blackberry, guava, and orange options each brought a unique twist — guava being the standout for its tropical brightness. The Spritz Flight was equally fun and creative.

Came here for a birthday dinner, Christmas Eve. Overall, food was great (better than good but not excellent). Decor and ambiance excellent. Having said that, the night was ruined by poor service. Ordered Duvel, after 37 mins, server came and told me that Satis has it, they are just getting it from their basement. 25 minutes pass, bartender comes with a sample beer and offers a sub. No one came for another 12 minutes to take the substitute drink order, I would imagine if I waited an hour for a drink, you would wait for me to make a decision, but no. Waiter no where… wait no, I know where he is, at the table right next to me, but doesn’t bother to ask if we need anything (this would repeat throughout the night). At this point, apps are done. Sitting at the table, thumbs twiddling, no one has any water, no drinks, no food and no waiter for about 30 mins. Wondering if we are at a restaurant or at a park at a table? Meanwhile, empty water glass sat on the table while the server is chatting up a storm at the next table for 15 minutes, while I have my hands up like a kid in an Asian classroom. Maybe he wants to check on me for my beer? Nope, not even on the radar. At this point, better to sing Mr. cellophane from the musical Chicago. Manager comes by and offers an apology and promises more attentive service because she agreed that this was not acceptable (that a drink should not take more than an hour). Ok, good, mistakes can happen. Willing to let it go. But boy, was I wrong. Another 40 minutes pass and we ask our waiter if he can check on the entree, he responded, “we have the state of the art POS system to get you the freshest and hottest entry, we got you”. Another 20 minutes passes, we track someone else down, will check on it. The rest of the restaurant has been served at this point. Takes another 10 minutes to get our entrees and my salmon was lukewarm (as if it’s been sitting in the window for a while), at this point no longer in the mood to eat. Night ruined purely because I am now disturbed by how bad the service is. Manager came by after and offered a gift card and an apology but at this point, can’t make up for the ruined night. Everyone at the table now just looking at me (yes it was my birthday) and can’t say anything because they see that I’m visibly upset, all because of the bad service. Clueless waiter asks if we want dessert, and of course, immediately after saying that, he goes missing. We ask another waiter to explain the desserts, he says, “cookie is a cookie, cake is a cake” and leaves annoyed. Oh ok… I’m sorry for bothering you and ruining your night?!?! Capping probably one of the worst service experience in my life, definitely hit the worst customer service trifecta. I wasn’t expecting it from a reputable establishment. Again, to be fair, food was great and excellent ambiance. But service, definitely needs a complete overhaul if what I experienced is the norm and I am hoping it isn’t, contemplated for a long time on whether to leave a tip or not, but left 18% since it was the holiday. Am I willing to give it another try? Not sure. This really was an epitome of service ruining what would have been otherwise an excellent dining experience. Ps. The staff that came to us with a beanie that was left, thank you, that was the lone positive from service standpoint that night.

Yelp
One of the beat meals I've had in Jersey city in while! The escargot dumplings and the caviar/potato app will make you weep.... The crispy rice was delicious too... i had the pork chop entree which was amazing. Im excited to try it for brunch. Gorgeous ambiance... perfect date spot

Yelp
I'm writing my review based on my experience of this place but also giving feedback because I think this place has SO much promise. The crew there are amazing and welcoming. Drinks are spot on. The challenge I think is that the menu isn't diverse enough in options and it's hard to say there's a reason to come for a sit down meal. Sometimes a simple yet elegant chicken dish, fish, or pasta dish added can make it just right. Duck, quail and rabbit, while I appreciate the artistry of it for food, can be difficult for many to say "yes" to. Since they have a seasonal menu, I'm looking forward to seeing what's new in the next season. Again, this place has so much promise and great ambiance for the local neighborhood.

Yelp
One of our favorite fancy date night spots! And the service is so sweet and thoughtful! We celebrated my fiancée's birthday there and the food as always was PHENOMENAL! We shared two delicious appetizers- blacktie scallops and fall forest fricasee. Let me just.. amazing. The Fall forest was mind blowing! For mains we did butternut agnolotti and braised short rib. Both were so so good! We wanted to lick the plates haha. Can't wait to go back soon!

Yelp
I've been to this place twice now, and I really hope it gains the attention it deserves. Both times, the food has been incredible--honestly comparable to some of the best restaurants in the city. The ambiance is cozy yet refined, and I love the decor. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable, offering spot-on recommendations each time. Surprisingly, both visits were during peak hours, but the place was almost empty. I wonder if they're just a bit ahead of the curve for the neighborhood, as it's tucked away on a quieter street. Even so, the food alone is worth it, and I really think more people should check it out. Definitely a hidden gem!

Yelp
I really hope this business does well. I've been here twice already and both times found the food to be excellent and comparable to some high-end restaurants in the city. I also love the ambiance of the restaurant and the decor. The staff is terrific and attentive, with recommendations on point for both of my experiences. Oddly, the restaurant was almost completely empty both times I went. Even though I went for midweek dinners each time, they were during peak hours, so I was surprised that there were almost no other diners. Part of me thinks they might be too early to the Paulus Hook restaurant scene and might turn off some potential diners seeking a more neighborhood restaurant experience, since they sit on a quiet residential block. However, the food is delicious, so I think people should give it a try.

Yelp
We had a reservation for 4 celebrating my hubby's birthday! Service: We were promptly seated and had water brought quickly (I like that). Hostess was lovely took our coats etc very nice table 1st guy to talk to us re drinks seemed indifferent Then we got our Wonderful Server (Rais?). She rocked it. Makes such a difference to feel some warmth + kindness from the person serving the food! Food: Starters: 4 of us shared 3. Hearts of palm salad was decent, for me not memorable but the other 2 Wows Escargot wontons - great blend of flavors + textures - felt luxurious. Although just looked like regular straight up wontons. Must try! Ox and the Egg - a lovely name for an interesting flavor blend + beautiful presentation. Tad of oxtail / egg / truffle / fava beans All Good! Mains: Dourado Royale - fish served crisply w an olive tapenade + artichokes + purple potatoes. Have to say when all our entrees came out mine looked like it was too small. But by the time I finished it was just right. Hubby + a friend had their Butcher block special a 14 oz Veal rib expertly grilled w a side of veggies + layered potato. The multi colored carrots were a really nice touch! Delish! Other friend had the braised short rib. She loved it. A nice fall/winter soothing plate. Desserts: Cannoli - interpretation - hubby said was more an almond cream served in deep fried tubes. I didnt try. Chocolate turtle cake could feed a family! For me it looked great but tasted average - happy after all the food I didnt like it too much! For his birthday 4 servers came out with a flaming cannoli! Fun! (Need to do a better Decaf :) Forgot the warm dinner rolls served in a pyrex style baking pan. Felt so homey! W a nice softened butter. (Why do even nice restaurants serve ice cubed butter!) so good. The cocktails we all enjoyed. Mine was a smoky mescal something. We had 2 glasses of wine - very nice but by the end of the meal cant remember what they were! Maybe the most beautiful restaurant space in Jersey City - warm glowing elegance, but not stuffy formal. We thought the noise level was fine + no irritating loud music. Thank you!

Yelp
Killer brunch! Great new spot tucked away in Paulus Hook. Upscale vibes, professional service, and great for a date night, or bringing your whole family. Great original brunch menu, with a handful of unique items and fun takes on traditional items - the cornflake encrusted French toast stole the show, the strawberry poptart a close second. While you can get the bluefin tuna and crispy rice for brunch or dinner menus, we had to give it a shot and was probably my favorite all around item. On top of that, we came for Mother's Day with our one year old - they had a high chair and stored away our stroller. Additionally, they had a pink rose for every mother, and a hand written note thanking us for joining. The wait staff was also amazing, we had such a great time - everyone was so nice, accommodating, and created a comfortable environment. Sometimes fine dining becomes so stiff they lose personality, but 87 Sussex nailed it. Look forward to coming back for dinner (and brunch, again)!

Yelp
This new spot in Jersey City is a decent choice if you need a spot for a night out in the area with good food, drinks, and a more elegant atmosphere. The space itself is pretty and has a cool 2-story layout. The decor is almost nostalgic with the white tablecloths. The cocktails were very yummy, and I'd go back just for that. There's bar space which makes it easy to just grab a seat there instead of sitting down for a full meal. As for the food, there were classic options with a slight modernization, I'd call it French-ish. The ratatouille tartlet and lamb were ok, and the passionfruit dessert was the star. Given the vast options in JC, there are simply other places to go for great food, and often at a better price point. I'd return for cocktails and dessert, and maybe revisit after they've been open a while longer.

Yelp
Came here for their opening weekend for drinks and dessert! Gorgeous space! I love what they did with the bar area and the whole place definitely has a vibe!! I can't wait to come back for brunch soon!

Yelp
Every dish at 87 Sussex was a savory journey. From delicate Escargot Wontons and Ox & Eggs to the bold Hoppin Poppers Frog Legs and sweet Barnegat Scallops--Chef Brian has redefined luxury dining. The Braised Short Rib melted in my mouth while the Prime New York Strip and Chef's Special brought a rich, savory finish. And for dessert? Chocolate Turtle Cake, Passion Fruit Trifle, and the refreshing Sorbet & Berries.

Yelp
A perfect night from service to quality of food. This place lived up to all the hype. Even though prices are a little higher than most, it was absolutely worth every penny. Decor is mesmerizing. Presentation of food was artistry. The pictures say it all. Highly recommend. Certainly a special occasion place!

Yelp
Loved it here!! Beautiful interior, kind wait staff and incredible food. The homemade pop tart was my favorite dish.

Yelp
We had dinner here a few nights ago and it was absolutely amazing! It is a beautiful restaurant, the food was absolutely outstanding and our waiter was wonderful. Not one thing was wrong. My husband said it was the best pork chop he has ever had and my ravioli with crispy Parmesan or out of this world. The drinks and desserts were top-notch. I would highly highly recommend this restaurant. It is a hidden treasure.

Yelp
"Plant Based" menus are meant to be vegan, not vegetarian. Theirs is filled with butter and cheese. Please improve.

Yelp
Love Brunch! Excellent atmosphere and kind service. It was our first visit and now we cannot wait to come back for dinner. Food was delicious, flavorful. Coffee was amazing too!

Yelp
This place is solid - great brunch, good drinks, the vibe is upbeat & fun - the burgers and fries are pretty yummy too - Solid

Yelp
This is my second visit to this establishment but the first for brunch. Everyone was professional and I believe the gentleman that checked in on us periodically was a manager. I started with a Bloody Mary and my husband had sparkling water. My drink was delicious. I ordered the tuna appetiser and my partner order corn beef hash with a poached egg. No complaints on either of our choices. I will definitely recommend to my friends and family!!!

Yelp
Wow, what a great addition to the Jc restaurant scene. This place is sexy. The marble wall with the light fixtures is really something. Loved the big expansive space. The highlight was the bartender. He really knew his stuff, was so friendly, and made excellent cocktails. The honey whisky drink was phenomenal. Really enjoyed his explanation of the drinks and they weren't too sweet which is a rarity. The food was also excellent. Tried the truffle turnip, heart of palm salad, and tuna with crispy rice. All delicious. Will be back for sure.

Yelp
I want to love this place, I want a vibey, boozey, yummy spot in our neighborhood. But alas, the price point is off, I eat at all kinds of restaurants all over the country and love a good Michelin star, this just doesn't deliver. It was empty on a beautiful Friday night...

A R.

Yelp
Walked by one night and stopped in for dinner. 3 scallops and a single prawn was $42 dollars. $42 US Dollars. I left starving. Way over priced for what it was. The walls are hard surfaces so the noise level from a barely half crowd room was insane. You could not have a conversation at all. The interior was very nice, but you're paying for the food and service. The service was mediocre, but ok. After all the place wasn't that busy. Very expense. Not worth the money. Too loud. When they open the patio, should be a nice experience eating outside, but even still, money is well spent elsewhere.

Yelp
Excellent shared bites and a nice cocktail menu to match. Dessert was also great. The classic ambiance is great for friends, family, loved ones etc.
