Detroit’s Best Restaurants for a Delicious Lunch | Eater Detroit

"While metro Detroit has no shortage of Vietnamese eateries, 88 Banh Mi and Bowl stands out as a specialist in banh mi — an ideal lunch for those on the go. Here, baguettes are baked in-house each morning and customers can find a wide variety of options ranging from vegetarian, marinated meats, and more traditional Vietnamese style meats. Steak and chicken is halal steak and chicken, and shrimp and mackerel pike are also available. Opt for two mini-sized banh mis to mix and match." - Serena Maria Daniels

Delicious food and drink!!! Food - my husband and I both ordered bowls. Samyang noodles for us both. He got beef and sausage. I got meatball, shrimp and pork belly. We also ordered the veggies on ours. We love spicy so we also ordered a side of their chili sauce and it'sa must for spicy food lovers. I tasted my husband's too. My favorite meats are the shrimp and pork belly. We both ordered the egg. Drink - the Vietnamese egg coffee was phenomenal! We also ordered the passion fruit tea and the honeydew melon tea. The honeydew tea was amazingly delicious. Service- you order at the register, sit down and they bring your order to your table. The young lady was very helpful and friendly. 100% I will be back. The dining room is small with smaller tables so it would be difficult to have a large group in this restaurant. But they are set up pretty good for carryout.

My first experience at this place and it didn’t disappoint one bit. I got the large 88 Special with everything on it and I regret nothing. All of the meat was cooked well, the house sauce was addictive, and the Bahn Mi bread was out of this world. I will be back, and I’ll most likely buy extra bread for home.

On my way home from Royal Oak, I decided to check Yelp for nearby restaurants to try and came across 88 Bánh Mì & Bowl — a beautiful Vietnamese spot with a modern, earthy vibe. It's great for both dine-in or grab-and-go. From the moment I walked in, Joyce was amazing and incredibly helpful. She answered all my questions about the menu and gave thoughtful recommendations on both food and drinks. I ordered a rice bowl with grilled pork, steak, and shrimp — and it did not disappoint. The flavors were bold and layered, with a mild kick of spice that added just the right amount of heat without being overpowering. For my drink, I tried the Honeydew Fruit Tea. It was a bit sweeter than I prefer, but that was on me — I later learned you can customize the sweetness level. Overall, the experience was great. The food was fresh and flavorful, the service was welcoming, and I’ll definitely be coming back to explore more of the menu. Joyce highly recommended the Bánh Mì sandwiches, so that’s at the top of my list for next time!

Google
First time trying this place and it really hit the spot when I wanted a banh mi. This was the first time I had a pork belly banh mi and it was really good! My brothers got the regular and a mini meatball one and they were satisfied. The menu is curated and specific which I prefer

Google
I am discerning when it comes to Vietnamese sandwiches, and this cute Banh mi shop has won me over. My first experience with their grilled pork Vietnamese sandwich was exceptional. The chili sauce added an extra layer of flavor. The Vietnamese Iced coffee was also perfectly prepared. They offer a variety of banh mi options, as well as other dishes that I look forward to trying. I highly recommend this establishment.

Google
Ordered a 5 Banh Mi as well as a Mi Cay. The Mi Cay tasted like someone took a Shin Ramen packet and added a few things to it (fishballs, etc.). Sandwiches were ok, the meat quality meh, but overall experience was not great.

Google
I was really impressed with this place! The Banh Mi was really great. The bread wasn't too crunchy to cut the inside of your mouth, so bread was solid! The vegetarian curry special really took me by surprise. It was so full of flavor and vegetarian. I was so impressed! I would highly recommend this place!

Google
super disappointed; chose to pick up food instead of overpaying for delivery and got home and my bowl had no soup, and no egg roll, and no basil or pickle, or bean sprout or peanut with the bowl. Hardly any meatball or chicken but they managed to give me FIVE mackerel pieces. I’ve come here many times and have never had a bad experience til now. This was disgusting.

Yelp
This has been my third time coming here and ordering the Bahn Mi Special because it hits every single time! I brought my friend with me and she agreed. The pork tastes like lechon and they do not skip out on the veggies. I would love to eventually try their other food and/or drinks. I would give a 5/5 but this was my first dining in and there so many fruit flies, legit like 6, which put me and friend off because we were trying to catch up and enjoy the food. Not a great dine in experience but the food made up for it. Not sure if it's like that all the time but it was for us unfortunately.

Yelp
I discovered this place on instagram and have wanted to check it out for awhile. I finally went and thought the banh mi were okay. The grilled pork one was a bit fatty and chewy, but it had good flavor. My friend got the specialty one and also thought the pork belly was a bit on the really fatty side. The chicken one was good, but a bit dry. I liked the beef steak one the most! I didn't taste much of the patê in any of the mini banh mi that I had. Maybe the portions are more generous in the larger ones. The inside is a cute cafe style with lots of fake greenery walls with LED signs. The service was nice and the cashier let me try a sample of the sugar cane juice, which had a sweeter coconut kind of flavor. I got the strawberry sugar cane drink and it was good! I wouldn't say it's the best banh mi place I've been too, but for the Midwest it's a solid option for the area.

Yelp
Exceptional Vietnamese restaurant with excellent noodles, bahn mi sandwiches and fried spring rolls. Also their guava beverage is amazing. Spacious interior with several tables and prompt as well as accommodating service (the food is brought out to you). Part of the 168 Group as well. Recommended to check out in Warren!

Yelp
Saw this place advertising online so I give it a try. Looks pretty good when food reviewer was talking about it. Well they are wrong. Banh mi sandwich and vermicelli bowl is not bad it kinda bland. Even with fish sauce and chilies. Their appetizers or snacks are terrible. They basically reheat them in the air fryer for a couple second and serve it to you. I never had lukewarm fish ball or egg roll. Because they didn't reheat properly, egg roll was soggy and cold in the inside. Imagine that. Cold and soggy egg roll. I am used to fresh flan from bakery so their flan dessert is terrible. Store bought flan and dump them in a cup. Maybe I am picky but other people seems to enjoy their food.

Yelp
The banh mi was so tasty! Filled with your normally banh mi meat but they added roasted pork which was a really nice touch. The pickled daikon and carrots cut through the fattiness of the meat and a refreshing piece of cilantro. The bowl was delicious but the grilled pork was still a little wet from resting in the marinade. 3 additional sauces came with the bowl. Fish sauce, chili paste and the marinade. The chili paste is spicy so be warned. Delicious food for a great price. Can't for the next time I'm in the neighbourhood to try the rest of their menu.

Yelp
Foods are always mouth watering. Service was top notched . It has a family and friendly ambiance. Relaxing place after work or just hanging around with some of your friends

Yelp
Came here from a friend's recommendation last week and loved it. Been back twice already! The banh mi is crispy and delicious, but the shaken mango is my favorite thing. It is something that is very easy to make at home, but the convenience of being to get some on the go is great!!! The inside is pretty cute and I enjoy the music that is played. The person taking my order is always listening and really nice as well! I also haven't tried it from here yet, but the grilled rice paper is something I haven't seen from other Vietnamese restaurants around here. I went back to Vietnam last year and saw "Vietnamese Pizza" everywhere on the streets and it was this! It is really good and fun to eat (but nothing like pizza! Def just a name that makes tourists feel more familiar haha). Other Vietnamese Americans I've talked to had no idea what I was talking about when I said Vietnamese pizza! I'll tell them it's just banh trang nuong now though haha.

Yelp
I had a difficult time ordering because I didn't want one of the items on the sandwich. After some negotiation I thought we understood each other. The lady at the counter conveyed my wish to the man making the sandwiches. I got in my car, hit the road and didn't start eating until I was nearly in Ohio or I would have returned it. Half the sandwich was what I wanted and half the way it was on the menu. Some of the chicken was really good, but almost all of one half of the sandwich had to spit out because it was gristle. Maybe I hit them on a bad day? I'd say eat in or close by to try it in case you experience what I did. I would actually try it again based on the good half and the lady at the counter. The staff was very friendly and the place clean and well maintained.

Yelp
I originally came here after seeing that they offer sugar cane drinks and was pleasantly surprised by the food as well. The 88 banh mi special had a generous amount of roast pork and the skin was extremely crispy. The bread was very nicely toasted. We chose samyang noodles ($1.99 extra) as the base for our bowl which were basically spicy ramen noodles (beware if you can't handle spice). Will be back to try their other banh mi options as well as their Vietnamese ice coffee.

Yelp
Incredible Banh mis, I should hope so as it's in the name! Order from counter and they will bring it out to your table. Parking is ample in the lot. Bathroom was clean.

Yelp
88 Banh Mi and Bowl 8/12/24 Came back again. This time to try something new. Had the shrimp Banh Mi. Not bad. Updated menu. Even better. This place is constantly growing and changing for the better. Nice! Recommended

Yelp
Menu offerings is simple - drinks, bowls and importantly bahn mi. I like how their menu is simple and you don't have to spend long time trying to determine what to get. I got the 88 Special and grilled pork - both large and yes, don't bother with mini, get the large, you won't regret it!! It only took few minutes to get the food, I asked it for to go, but ate half each at the restaurant. I got the bread toasted and sliced. Now, don't expect your sandwich to be the same size and overstuff like those seen on the menu monitors - it's not. The sandwich are thin and slim, thus skip the mini and get the large. The bread being toasted, outside was crisp and internally very chewy, I could eat the bread by itself. Grilled pork was my favorite - the pork was excellent, seasoned well and I could just eat the pork by itself. The Grilled pork had more flavor profile then the 88 Special. 88 Special - while decent, don't think I'll get this again. Even now, I'm still thinking about the grilled pork than the 88 special.... definitely will be back to try other bahn mi offerings. Inside reminds me more of a cafe/coffee shop - limited seating, more of a take out joint. I wish they would slice the sandwich before they wrap it, it's hard to rewrap the other half with the wrapper cut in half. For drinks, you'll need to order one from their drink menu.

Yelp
This is a cute spot off of Dequindre, in what used to be a large fresh fruit and vegetable market, that now serves as a strip mall. Ordered to eat in and had ample seating. The Vietnamese noodle bowls were tasty, you can choose from rice or noodles and your choice of toppings. Place caters primarily to carryout, but the food was ready fairly quickly.

Yelp
If you like bahn mi sandwiches as much as I do, you try to stop at any shop you can find. Finding an authentic place like 88 Bahn mi bowl who make their own bread, use pate in their bahn mi and have a fun selection of sides is a must visit! You can get several types of Bahn mi, in addition to bowls that layer bahn mi ingredients over rice or noodles for a nice meal option. Sandwiches come in mini or regular sizes, the minis are a great personal size and start at $4.99, which is a really nice price for a great sandwich! We ordered 4 minis and the snack street corn and a rice paper snack the owner suggested. Everything was delicious and fresh. They also have great sugar cane drinks and Vietnamese coffees too! We are going to try the bowls next time and the snacks we didn't get to this time. The owner and staff are very nice and helpful and I really liked the decor as well!

Yelp
Just tried this new spot in Warren after seeing a lovely Instagram reel. What a gem! The space is decorated so nicely with greenery, lots of neon signs and seating, and plenty of orchids and succulents on every table. The menu is pretty simple with drinks, customized bowls, and banh mi sandwiches. For drinks, we had the iced Vietnamese coffees and the kumquat iced drink. The coffee was absolutely incredible - very strong coffee flavor and not too sweet! The kumquat drink was super refreshing. We each did the bowls with samyang noodles and you get your choice of two meats. These were really good and very spicy!! We also tried a mini steak banh mi and this was probably our favorite thing. Definitely want to come back to try more of the banh mi sandwiches!

Yelp
Tried it again, and had a great lunch! This time we got a steak & and a shredded chicken Banh Mi. Both were very delicious! Flavorful meats, great crispy roll, nice fresh vegetables. We did notice DoorDash price is DOUBLE the menu cost, 12.99 per sandwich. If you want delivery, grub hub only charges the listed menu price, so use them instead. Many of our local Vietnamese restaurants don't even have Banh Mi.

Yelp
OKAY. Some seriously fine eats here. Truly a hidden gem, as you can barely make out the sign in the large plaza that Banh Mi Bowl is in. Okay so the thing is, you should order everything. They make mini sizes, so this actually might be possible. We tried 5 different variations split between 3 people and I don't even know if I could declare a favorite - all were exceptional!! The spicy garlic shrimp or roast pork would have probably been voted top 2, had I forced my friend to vote. Alsoooooo the drinks! Once again we ordered 3 different drinks and, unsurprisingly, all were tasty! I loved how sour the lemonade was, sugarcane was as expected - if you know, you know - and then the MOST PERFECT VIETNAMESE COFFEE! The woman at the cash register said their coffee is so good people will drive 45+ mins to their store just to score some. I would go back just for the coffee. ADDITIONALLY they have a whole bunch of fun snacks that are packaged by the store, aaaand you can sample them! The dried squid is always a fav but the tamarind was so tasty as well. This place will absolutely be a regular weekend lunch spot!

Yelp
This is one of my usual places when I am over on that side of town. The service is quick, prices are reasonable and the flavors are just perfect. I have tried their chicken, beef and meatball sandwiches, as well as the 88 Special. They are all tasty and the bread is always crisp and fresh. Service is very quick and polite and they open early, so it's easy to grab one to take with me to work. Overall, I suggest this for quick lunches that are better and more filling than your average fast food meal.

Yelp
Small space with limited seating but I'm assuming this place was meant as a carry out spot. Minimal but tastefully done decor. The Vietnamese coffee and beef banh mi were DELICIOUS. The girl who helped us order was super helpful in answering our questions. I will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
The bread is wonderfully flaky with soft interior, and the chicken has big flavor. The interior of restaurant is fun and chic!

Yelp
I called to place an order and the lady asked if an order they had was mine. I said no, I would like to place an order. She then hung up on me. I called right back to try again and no one answered my call. ??? I literally just talked to you. Went online to try and order and it was turned off and said I could not order any more. Very RUDE! I've ordered here many times but this treatment from who this lady was will make me reconsider.
google avatar

Veronica R.

Yelp
The shop just opened yesterday (June 28, 2023) so please be patient as they get settled in. Service was quick & friendly, I really enjoyed my banh mi, the bread was crunchy on the outside soft in the inside and I felt like it had enough filling. I will be coming back to try other items on their menu.
google avatar

Yelp
Exceptional service. Fresh and creative approach to Vietnamese food. I ordered the bowl with Vermicelli rice noodles. Comes with up to 3 proteins - I picked shrimp, mackerel pike and plant based meat. My husband ordered veggie sandwhich. It comes with the plant based meat, which he didn't care for. They substituted 2 sandwiches until he was happy! Also comped us a sugar cane drink and 2 desserts. Very pleasant decor and quick, professional service! Highly recommended.
google avatar

Dee W.

Yelp
The food was not flavorful, the sit down area was more like a fast food spot I wasn't going for that vibe. The dumplings made me sick not sure if it was the sauce.
google avatar

Huyen V.

Yelp
My bf ordered the #1 with it being around $11-12 for 1 regular sized banh mi we were expecting it to be good. Sadly it did not meet expectations, they really skimped on the veggies and the meat in my small banh mi with grilled pork. The thin layer of meat and small amount of veggies for $5-6 was super disappointing. Drinks: bf ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee and stated that it was the blandest and worst one he's had. The drink was prob a cream beige color vs brown how it should be. I got the sugarcane drink with kumquat which tasted kind of syrupy and not quite right. Service was good and nice modern ambiance but the food was super disappointing. With the area this place needs to step it up especially for the prices. - more pickled vegetables for sure - more meat - tweak the viet coffee for a more authentic taste

Yelp
steak banh mi 10/10! so is their Vietnamese Ice Coffee. this Banh Mi is better than the one i had in Paris
google avatar

Yelp
Cool new place with great fresh food and cute vibes! Love that they have vegetarian options as it is somewhat rare to find a vietnamese restaurant that offers a Vegetarian Banh Mi! I also love the mini sizes when you just want a snack! i also got a vietnamese coffee which was delicious and rich in flavor. I will definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
I've gone back to 88 Banh Mi & Bowl a few times now, 1) because I like that the bowl gives you a bunch of variety of meats if you are indecisive like I am and there are a lot of bánh mì options 2) their service is quick and friendly every time 3) love the decor. I read a review that said they would much rather go with an "authentic" Vietnamese restaurant from someone that is not Vietnamese. Wish they allowed comments on reviews because the owner is Vietnamese and I'm also Vietnamese and think this place is authentically Vietnamese. Idk how more authentic it can be for a non-Vietnamese person.

Yelp
The real thing. This little place where Food Emporium used to be hits the spot. Clean and staffed by friendly people. Food is great. Little hard to find. The building sign is small. On the north end of the building. Worth your while.

Yelp
My boyfriend usually orders the B7 Banh Mi Xa Xiu. He says it is one of the best Xa Xiu he has had. The toppings are pretty well balanced and not too much of one thing. The sugar cane is pretty good but could be slightly sweeter. I get the B8 Banh Mi Pate Cha Lua, and I think it's one of the best in Michigan. And service is always friendly and quick. Can't wait to go back and try the Pate Chaud.
google avatar

Jason N.

Yelp
Omg so freaking good! I tried several of the Banh Mi's and they were delicious. Everything is so fresh, the bread is warm and toasty. The skewers are awesome. I want to eat everything on the menu.

Grace W.

Yelp
So good! I ordered the plant based meat in my noodle bowl. Loved it!!! The staff were very friendly as well, and the overall ambiance was really nice. Lots of cool greenery on the wall and fun decor.
google avatar

Melisa M.

Yelp
Holy yummmmm. Best Bahn Mi since I left the west coast. I got the B4 with pork belly and pâté. Pork skin was crispy and perfect. Pickled veggies were perfect. I tried the okra side and it was fresh and delicious. The star of my meal might be the egg coffee. I've never had or seen anything like that. So deliciously creamy and frothy. I'm coming back for sure!! the staf was friendly and the inside is cute and clean. Love you 88! I'll be back.
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Great food and great service. I got the grilled pork Banh Mi and it was super delicious. My friends ordered a variety of other Banh mi's and all loved them also. The only small comment I'd make is that I had a friend who ordered the bowl and it didn't come with the clear soup as advertised even when she asked about it. Otherwise, would totally go back and eat here again!

Felix S.

Yelp
my go-to banh mi place. i want to try the other things on the menu but the banh mi is just so good! sugarcane drinks are also great. everything comes out pretty quickly too.
google avatar

May V.

Yelp
For the price it was not worth it. There's better places to get bahn mi. Stingy on the meat. Paris bahn mi is the place to go. Cost less and they give so much more meat.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
We loved this place!!! Dont be fooled by the outside. One of the best casual, quick spots for a fresh meal. This was my first time having banh mi. We tried the shrimp, chicken, and the beef, all were awesome. Love the fresh veggies. They make a majority (or all?) of their items in house. We also had the croissant and pate appetizers and both were great, buttery, flakey. Def will go back to try a bowl.

Lanie L.

Yelp
Was truly excited another banh mi place opened up, however that excitement quickly died down. I stopped by a couple days after their grand opening and ordered a special and grilled pork banh mi. The special was decent but the grilled pork lacked the char grilled flavor and the marinate was off. I assumed it was due to being new so I gave it another try a few days later. Once again I ordered the same two sandwiches along with a Vietnamese iced coffee. My special sandwich smelled like it was going bad. After a couple bites, I tossed it out. My friend's bbq pork sandwich was still lacking in flavor and grilled taste. My Vietnamese coffee was horrible! I have never had bland coffee like this before. I knew there was something off when the color looked watered down. I hope they work on perfecting their recipes soon as I was really excited to see another banh mi shop in the area.

Yelp
Delicious food! Steak Banh Mi 10/10. Beautiful decor and super comfortable. Was greeting so nicely and food came out fast!

Yelp
My partner and I just moved here from California and we've been on the hunt for all the good food that Detroit has to to offer. 88 Banh Mi and Bowl does not disappoint. We've tried the pork belly sandwich and the 88 special. They were great and the service was even better. So good we came back for more! Today we tried a sample of the pate chaud and ooooooweeee. It's flaky, savory, and delicious. So glad we found a place to get our bahn mi and vermicelli fix.

Shanell D.

Yelp
Emily and his brother are so helpful and nice . We ordered Banh Mi (steak) was my favorite . Also try the grilled pork its good as well. Strawberry lemonade slushieThis place is small but cute .

Lynne T.

Yelp
We chose this restaurant based on Yelp reviews, and every positive thing that anyone said turned out to be true. We were here on a Saturday night, arriving about 7:30, and were the only eat-in patrons. The ambiance is really nice, but very much like a cafe. Definitely not fancy. The food is absolutely delicious and indeed the staff were very friendly and helpful. We definitely did not think the sandwich (banh mi) was skimpy. The bowl was very generous. We split one banh mi and one bowl and both of us left sated. We will be back!

Emma J.

Yelp
Came here to try the banh mi and their bowl since it seemed interesting, and it did not disappoint! The banh mi we ordered was B6- the grilled pork. There was plenty of meat and veggies, a perfect balance of both! The bowl was wonderful, and it was very packed. You get to choose your toppings and up to 3 meats. The person who took my order, Lilian, was very helpful with what I should get in my bowl. The owner was also very kind! While they were making my order she struck up a conversation with me, which is when I found out that they are privately owned and not a franchise store. The place itself was wonderful, looks very modern and has a good atmosphere. Will definitely be coming back here to order again!

Jason N.

Yelp
This being a relatively new place had my hopes up for Banh Mi in my area, and it honestly delivered. My first sandwich from this place was the 88 Special, it had almost every flavor I enjoy in Banh Mi all in one sandwich. It was made even better when i had their sugar cane drink, I remember having these drinks when I was younger and it's refreshing to have them again. What's more amazing is that everything that they sell is made in house, from the bread to the snacks on the shelves. I know because one of the owners had actually gave me a tour of the kitchen and showing me the proofer they use for bread. Overall this place is a great place to go to for a sit down lunch with friends, I am definitely going back here again.

Angie L.

Yelp
Such a nice spot to just hang out and take in the environment. The ambiance is great, with a very modern look. The food is great, bread gives a melt in your mouth feeling. Great service, was greeted and helped immediately! Will definitely come back.

Ryno H.

Yelp
Very good banh mi. Pleasantly surprised since Detroit area aren't known for it. Got the thịt người cold cuts with extra pate. On point! The sugarcane with kumquat wasn't @strong" more watered down. Everything else good!

Lucetta F.

Yelp
I had a bowl with noodles, chicken, garlic shrimp and chicken along with pickled veggies a yummy sauce. Also had slushy lemonade. Fantastic.
