Inside, 12 tiger-print bar stools and 30 lounge seats—lush velvet banquettes and cozy swivel armchairs—create nooks and crannies for romantic date nights and semi-private conversations, with Assembly Design Studio channeling the neighborhood’s history-meets-charm vibe into an intimate bar focused on the art of cocktail making. Chef Matt McPherson’s menu leans into small indulgences like kaluga caviar on schmaltz latkes, foie gras bratwurst, and a juicy French dip (dishes run $14–$22), while bar manager Dave Irwin riffs on classics: the Beefed Up (beef tallow–washed Bully Boy whiskey, amaro, cacao bitters) and the dairy-free Charles St Espresso (coconut rum, espresso, cacao, whipped coconut cream), plus savory numbers like the Garden Fairy with gin, fino sherry, red bell pepper, lemon, and basil. Came to 89 Charles the other day, walking in my first impression was rlly impressed. Low lighting to create an intimate/sexy kind of cocktail place. Our server Crystal, was great even though my date and I came in a little bit later on & stayed until close, they were able to fulfill our request for a cucumber martini which is so appreciated because not a lot of places do… if you can believe it. Everything was timely and not rushed at all. It was such a good atmosphere and I loved the seating, it really makes the space & It’s very easy to stay for a long time. Interested to try more things on the menu! Great place to come on a date or with friends

A new bar in Beacon Hill — I really love the vibe here! It’s super cozy and chill. 🩵 Drinks are great, and the food is surprisingly good too. The cookie was amazing! 🍪 Normally I’m not a big fan of bourbon, but the Fall Favors was a good one to try. This bar also has a lot of interesting drinks — I might come back and try more next time. It’s the perfect spot to hang out after work or enjoy a relaxed night with friends. Definitely coming back again! 🍸✨

A swanky, moody spot that clearly knows atmosphere is the main event. Everything feels intentional, from the lighting to the cocktails, even if the chairs seem designed to keep you from settling in too long. The service mirrors that energy, attentive right up until the bill is paid, then unmistakably rushed. It works if you are in the mood for a sharp, fast-moving night, but this is not a place that invites you to linger.

Cozy cocktail bar with really well thought of drinks. Went with friends and got to try a sip of everyone’s — and none of them were a miss. My favorites were the Garden Fairy and The Brazilian Connection. The host, waitstaff and bartenders are super friendly and knowledgeable. We got the potatoes to split and they hit the spot. Already planning to bring more friends here :) Only note: the door is easy to miss if it’s your first time going. It’s a subterranean bar, so look for a door down some stairs.

When I read about this place opening I was excited. I was then lucky enough to go today, and boy it does not disappoint. Ambiance is Devine, the art deco is pumping through its veins and the cocktails are extremely well thought out. The space is compact, but open, and I’m not sure how they put on food as well, not that we tried any because the cocktails are a meal in themselves. Green and Yellow Chartreuse in stock is a strong sign that this place knows what is needed. Thank you team! You rock!

Great start to what can become an amazing cocktail spot! The decor and vibes are great. The space is small but not loud or overcrowded. Drinks were very well balanced. We came as walkins shortly after they opened on a thursday and waited about 40 mins so resys are definitely recommended . Overall a great addition to the neighborhood my only complaint is not having a full bar and only have flavored spirits. the bar tender mentioned that full bar would be coming within the year so looking forward to coming back for a true gin martini.

As a Beacon Hill resident, this neighborhood needed a place like this. The space is the right amount of cozy and sexy. So perfect for yapping with your friends and enjoying DELICIOUS cocktails. Could not be more excited to go back and visit again. 💖✨

Sexy, cozy cocktail bar nestled in beautiful Beacon Hill. We made a resi for a weeknight date night, but there was ample seating both at the bar and lounge areas. For cocktails we ordered: Brazilian Connection (very sweet but easy to drink), Charles St Espresso (dark espresso martini with whipped cream *drool*), filthy martini (it was a gin martini), and Hand of Glory (spicy, smoky robust mezcal). For snacky snacks we ordered: Stuffed olives (elevated via nuts, which honestly was the best snack we had), Hamachi crudo (it was good but could have used a little bit of a kick), and Blistered shishito peppers (could have used less bonito flakes and needed salt flakes). So snacks are hit or miss but the cocktails for sure is where its at! Recommend for the vibes and drinks. Eat before or after!

89 Charles is the new quasi-speakeasy on the Flat of the Hill. Buried in the dungeon that used to be home to Artu, it has been transformed and reimagined entirely into a quiet, cozy, intimate cocktail lounge with some food options. I'll confess, when I first got here and saw the menu I felt they were being too twee and precious by half, but their work is impressive: cocktails are tasty (and don't take forever, as with some artisanal bespoke cocktail lounges, and the food is impressive in reimagining old familiars with new flavors. They don't take reservations, so timing is everything; the force was with me when I arrived, but there was a queue out front when I left. I'd say that 89 Charles is a net positive to Beacon Hill.

I really like this bar. Its dark, moody, and glamorous, with a strong cocktail program and creative bites. My suggestion would be to make a reservation or lime up right at 5pm if you are coming on a weekend night!

I loved my experience here! As a matchbox collector I was so pleasantly surprised to see a basket of matchbooks on the host stand! For drinks I tried the titan and the brazilian drink. Both were great but the brazilian one was the best- tasted like candy! The food was fine, nothing crazy. I tried the caesar and burrata but neither were notable. Great ambiance overall tho. The tables are actually very well spaced out for a small restaurant. Loved it!

I really enjoyed this cool new speakeasy on Charles Street in Boston. Cool entryway with a porthole door (I hope they use a code to get in soon). The vibe is super 1920's with nice lighting. The bar is small (no standing room) but nice to sit and chill. The tables are great for small groups to have small bites and cocktails. I liked the French dip sandwich...just wish it was more shaved steak...but it was tasty with the au jus. Worth making a reservation or come super early to put in your name. The server was right on point, by the way...no overcrowding here. Great vibe and I highly recommend!

Our male bartender was absolutely outstanding and made the entire experience incredible. I would 100% come back the next time I'm in Boston!
