8bit do a great burger. I think these guys have seriously nailed the size and ratio of a burger - not too big, not too small, right amount of all salad and condiments, well cooked pattie with crispy edges, bread is half-way between bread roll and brioche. Every bite has a bit of everything, not sloppy or missing half the ingredients on the edges.
For a venue that is hyped up like this one with people waxing lyrical about their burgers, I think it's fair to warn you to manage your expectations here. It's a fast food joint. Yes, a cute one with a hipster theme and a fun menu - but at the end of the day it's still burgers and shakes. If that is what you're coming in for and not trekking half way across town to get - you will leave satisfied.
The bar for burgers has been raised pretty high in Melbourne, but I think 8bit definitely falls into the top 5 of burgers around town. Which isn't to say drop everything and queue 45mins+ for it - just means if you're around and willing to head into this busy little shop, you'll be rewarded with a delicious burger. We snuck in here before 7pm which seems to be when things get a little out of hand queue wise.
The chilli cheese fries were nice but the cheese sauce instead of actual cheese killed it for me so I wouldn't order them again. Get nostalgic and order potato gems or straight up fries to share.
Seating is limited so be prepared to take away, sit at the bar or fight for a table (max about 4-5 at a table, so not great for large groups).
Kudos to the staff for being happy and friendly under the pressure of big queues and cranky patrons.
In a nutshell - a delicious burger in cute packaging at the busiest spot in town.
