On the Grid : Eighth and Roast

"Eighth and Roast is one of the few local, non-pretentious coffee shops in town, owned and operated by a local married couple. It’s a small space, but they have a ton of seating. They roast their own beans and have about a half dozen roasts. Even without all that, the coffee just tastes great. They have the best iced coffee in town." - GS&F

Great vibe, absolutely fabulous staff (they were 5 stars BEFORE I spilled my latte everywhere and they helped me clean it up with a smile and made me a fresh latte!). The bacon egg and cheese croissant was great too! If I ever go back, the cinnamon rolls looked amazing…

One of my favorites atmospheres of any coffee shop in Nashville. Beautiful space and amazing coffee. Hard to beat this location!

I recently visited this delightful coffee place and was instantly hooked by its old small downtown charm. The exposed brick walls and cozy, compact setup gave it a nostalgic, urban feel that made it a perfect escape. The light roast drip coffee was fantastic—bright, flavorful, and expertly brewed, hitting all the right notes for me. The atmosphere was spot-on, lively enough to feel inviting but never chaotic. My only complaint was the lack of outdoor seating—there wasn’t much room to soak in the surroundings outside. I also wished they had heavy cream on hand; I love that thick, smooth texture it brings without piling on sugar. Even so, the stellar coffee and that classic downtown vibe make this a spot I’d gladly revisit.

Love the berry tea, strong WiFi, and chips! Would love more herbal tea options and vegan food but there is also peppermint tea. Glad I came here! Love the vibes ✨💫✨

Google
This is going to be a long review, but in summary: There are a ton of food options, from quick-grab items to fresh cooked food. Plenty of both savory and sweet items, and a plethora of gluten-free options. They make exceptional "classics" (we tried a cappuccino and cortado) but also provide flavored lattes. They value consistency and take exceptional care with each drink! My Dad and I have gone on coffee dates every Friday for 7+ years. We started as frappe and white chocolate mocha lovers, but over time have grown to love coffee in its simpler forms. That said, we have become coffee snobs which was only made worse when I became a barista back home. We were looking for a place to stop by for our final coffee date before I head off to college, and this was where we landed in the middle of a road trip. I'm almost thankful that I don't live closer to this cafe because I would spend an absurd amount of money here. The environment is perfect for studying or chatting. For days you don't feel like drinking coffee, they have plenty of fun options in their cold display as well as chai, matcha, and other teas. They also have quick-grab foods that looked incredible! (Pb+J overnight oats <3) But, if you're visiting for a study session, coffee date, or to treat yourself, their coffee and food are a MUST. They have a wonderful selection of goodies, from muffins to sandwiches, and even quiche. Plus, they have at least one gluten-free option in each group. Anywho, we were most attracted to this cafe because of the flavor options. They don't have an extensive list of flavors, but they do carry the classics. Simplicity is a good sign that they trust their coffee to shine through! As of our visit they had seasonal flavors, so my dad got a cappuccino with some of their maple and butter pecan flavor. You know you're in the right place when you ask for a "capp" and they don't assume it's a frappe. I ordered a plain cortado and was delighted to see that they wrote "Tado" on my cup. How cute!! Since I'm a barista I was peeking at their process for a little while as we waited. I am impressed by the measures they take to ensure consistency, like a scale for the espresso. Service was quick and the workers were very kind, knowledgeable and cool! As for the drinks, 10/10!! The milk was steamed to perfection. Silky with a marshmallow-y micro foam, and it even maintained a bit of sweetness. Their espresso does not get more bitter as it sits, which is an issue we have encountered at other coffee shops. It does not have a floral or fruity taste to it but is a bit more mellow in my opinion. It isn't overly dark or acidic either (though you still get a hint of acidity, it was much less noticeable in the capp and the milk balanced it well). I can't really explain it, but it tastes like how coffee smells, or how you would expect a comforting cup of Joe to taste. Since my Dad ordered a flavor in his, he liked that it was not overly sweet. You can never go wrong with house-made syrups since they are designed to work well with the coffee they use! I would HIGHLY recommend stopping by! I truly think that there is something for everyone here. Enjoy :)

Very nice local coffee shop if you're a coffee snob like myself. Nice vibe and great tasting Vanilla Oat Milk Latte.

Google
I am someone who likes most coffee, anything from plain black coffee to dessert lattes. That being said for the first time, I think this place may be a little too sophisticated for my taste buds. I ordered the holy cannoli expecting something on the sweeter side since a cannoli is a dessert. I didn’t taste it until I had already left and it was very bitter. The atmosphere and the drink itself was beautiful, just not what I anticipated. I can, though, tell the quality is definitely there as far as the coffee goes. It was very smooth. Prices are comparable to chain coffee shops. I would try this place again but make time to taste my drink before I leave!

The flavor of coffee here is a must! I highly recommend coming and get a cup. Very kind and friendly staff! Thank you from your friends at ETSC!!

Yelp
I've come to increasingly love and appreciate 8th and Roast after visiting more often at the Nashville airport and more recently their 8th Ave cafe. The interior is big and open with a good amount of community and bar seating at the window. They are fast, efficient, and serve one of my favorite lattes in the city. They also offer bakery items, some breakfast, and seasonal offerings. I highly recommend 8th and Roast for your morning needs!

Yelp
Great coffee! Did a short coffee/breakfast stop here on a weekday morning and really enjoyed it. I had an almond milk latte and a really delicious chia seed overnight oats bowl. They did not have any veggie options for the breakfast sandwiches, and the pastries were limited too. We went for the coffee though! The espresso was bold and smooth - I liked it a lot. I was pleasantly surprised by the overnight oats option. It was filled with fresh strawberries, coconut, peanut butter, and more. It was a sweet but healthier treat for breakfast. I also had a gluten free pumpkin muffin that had some type of streudel or chocolate marbled throughout. It was huge and I had some for breakfast 2 days after that. Great little coffee shop. Baristas were very friendly.

Yelp
I don't know what they put in their coffee but it is SO strong! Be cautious if you're sensitive to caffeine. They always have really fun and yummy rotating drinks on their specials board too. Have gotten their quiche a few times, however, if you want to get it heated just know you'll be waiting a while! Lots of seating if you want to study or work for a while here.

Yelp
Coffee is always good here! I recommend the macadamia milk in your latte. Definitely a different flavor but really good. I haven't tried food here yet but they do have a breakfast menu! Parking can be hard but this is a good place to meet up with a friend or work.

Yelp
Headed south through Nashville on my way home from Louisville last weekend, this place was the perfect stop for a quick pick-me-up for the last leg of the drive. I was pleased to find them open fairly late in the afternoon and on a Sunday no less. Even better was the mostly-maneuverable nearby free parking lot! Not a ton of space, but a spot for me - hurray! :) After a short walk over, I found the inside of the shop to be bright, slightly industrial, airy, and comfortable, with several people clearly hanging out, working on laptops, or just catching up. Seems like a good place for all of those needs! On the quieter side than some community coffee shops the day I visited, so perhaps extra good for getting work done. One drawback was I looked for a restroom and didn't find one easily. There might be one available to the public but I wasn't quite desperate enough to ask. I knew pretty quickly I wanted one of their seasonal specialities. I asked the barista taking my order which of a couple yummy-sounding drinks was the sweetest as I like my lattes on the dessert side. He said he hadn't tried any of them! I thought that was pretty funny. No big deal. I wound up choosing an iced "We Were in Paris," which had hazelnut, cinnamon, and brown sugar. It was nicely balanced, pleasantly sweet, with lots of cinnamon flavor. I enjoyed it. Pictures showed yummy looking pastries, but they were understandably somewhat picked over by late afternoon. I wound up with a chocolate chip muffin for a snack. It was decent but a little dry. I would've liked it if someone had offered to heat it up for me but there were folks waiting behind me and I didn't want to be an inconvenience so I just took it as it was. The crumble and drizzle of glaze on top was nice. All in all, could definitely see a return stop in the future. Enjoyed my brief time here and certainly enjoyed my drink!

Yelp
Solid vanilla latte! There is plenty of parking on the side of the building, and there is plenty of table space to get work done on your computer. The vibe of the cafe is very nice and mellow. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Purchased some coffee from a natural grocery store. Was excited to try it. When I opened the bag, the beans were a dull light, brown and lifeless. It is terrible. So disappointing.

Yelp
Quick and tasty stop for coffee and a breakfast sammie on our way to Radnor Lake on a Saturday morning! We managed to snag a parking spot on the street right in front of 8th & Roast, which is always a plus! There was no line when we got there - but you can tell that this is a popular spot on any day of the week. My husband and I sampled a few of their seasonal drinks - the Peppermint Bark latte, and the Pistachio latte. All of their food options sounded good (and smelled good) so we also ordered the "Old Fashioned" biscuit sandwich to-go. The coffee was delicious - I feel like there's a noticeable difference in taste from shops that roast their own beans. We also really liked the breakfast sandwich! The biscuit was thick and flaky, and the sausage, egg and cheese was warm and savory. We didn't stay indoors long - but this is absolutely the kind of coffee shop that I could see myself working remotely at for a few hours. This was a great start to the long weekend - we'll absolutely be back!

Yelp
Grabbed a latte as we began our morning and long drive back home. I ordered dulce de leche latte and me wife ordered the lavender haze latte, we thoroughly enjoyed our drinks. My drink had good flavor without being thoroughly sweet.

Michelle J.

Yelp
Have never experienced such rude customer service before. The hipster millennial entitlement has gotten out of control. When did answering questions become such a hassle? Was greeted rudely and when we asked a question got a very annoyed response. Not sure what I did wrong to them but I'd rather go somewhere else that coffee isn't $7 and that actually says hello and greets you positively.
google avatar

Yelp
I personally prefer the Charlotte location. The one on 8th is tougher to access in terms of parking, and has less comfortable seating options. Their coffee is always high quality though!

Megan B.

Yelp
When I first moved to Nashville (9 years ago) this was my absolute favorite coffee shop. Best breakfast sandwiches, great coffee, friendly staff, great space and ambience. It's fallen down my list of favorites over the years due to food quality and customer service. They've expanded significantly over the years to multiple locations and with the expansion the quality and experience have suffered in my opinion. The staff are not friendly, they give a vibe of arrogance and seem generally annoyed by customers; it's certainly not an inviting atmosphere. And the food is not good, I honestly would highly recommend sticking to just the coffee if you go for a visit. The food quality and customer service has declined over time but for some reason I keep going back to give it another try, I guess thinking maybe the staff were having bad days and it was an off day for the food. Each time, I continue to be disappointed, so I think it's just the way they operate now. I miss the days when this place was amazing. Hopefully they get back to that, but for now I won't be patronizing this place anymore.

Yelp
Had an opportunity to grab a latte from this location and the airport location. Great coffee. The online ordering option wasn't the best interface. I was unable to select a specific pick up time as the system was defaulted to their operating hours. As a result, my coffee was a bit cold when I picked it up. I think this needs to be fixed so that patrons can order ahead and specify the time they would like to pick up their coffee instead of adding a note at the end and hoping that the staff catch it. Otherwise, an overall great experience.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
Good location! There are a few big tables which make it a great place to stop and work. There's always fun new seasonal coffees to try and the breakfast sandwiches are good as well. Everyone who works here is so nice and even when the line is long it always moves fast!

JP T.

Yelp
One of the better coffee shops in Nashville. We enjoyed our drinks and the staff were friendly. Didn't try any of the seasonal drinks, but they did look pretty good.
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee and nice atmosphere on a rainy day Staff is nice too Regular latte has good taste
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee in a quieter part of town. Definitely has a more cozy, industrial vibe. A good amount of indoor seating which is nice. We got a drip coffee of their light roast and a cold brew. Both had a slightly more acidic taste, not in a bad way, and drank very smooth. Didn't need to add cream or sugar. Fair prices as well. They sell pastries that looked yummy but I didn't try any. They also sell bags of their beans and some coffee accessories (chemex, filters, etc.)

Yelp
Dry. You can see the edges and corners of the quiche a have darkened egg from heat. I'm not being picky here I eat garbage Cook Out at 3 am and Im chill about that. This quiche baaad

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place since I live a short walk away but unfortunately their coffee was very acidic and not good. I ordered an iced latte with almond milk, which was a bit pricier than elsewhere. My boyfriend ordered a cold brew. I took a couple sips and figured maybe the almond milk was just watered down or something. I will give it to them that they agreed to remake my latte with oat milk when I asked, but that was also awful. My boyfriend also was t happy with his cold brew and added a splash of water to make it more palatable but it didn't help. We ditched our drinks and went elsewhere. Beyond the coffee itself, the cafe is decent from an atmospheric standpoint, the employees weren't overly nice or particularly rude so no complaints there, and the location is great as there aren't any other coffee shops in a reasonable walkable distance.

Jesse S.

Yelp
Friendly workers, tasty coffee and the most AMAZING breakfast sandwich (I got the B.E.C.C.). They had the standard syrup flavors AND a handful of craft seasonal flavor like lavender-honey and juniper-pear. Don't money around ;) this is THE coffee shop.

Reese C.

Yelp
Very comfy ambiance with a good variety on the menu. The seats are not ideal for studying for long periods of time, but it's a great place nevertheless. I would have enjoyed more variety of seating and tables. The coffee was also not my favorite, but the ambiance easily made up for it. I would come back and try their food! (Would give a 3.5 but that's not possible)
google avatar

Dana G.

Yelp
I ordered one of the specialty drinks and a breakfast sandwich, and both were really good. Maybe we just caught them on a bad day, but staff were rude and acted inconvenienced to be there. It was such an uncomfortable experience, and I haven't been back because of that.

Lauryn S.

Yelp
Best Cuban latte I've ever had!!! It was one of the more expensive cups of coffee I've had, but well worth it and not unreasonable! Wow wow wow
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
Went here for a study day and it was very chill, I like the vibe here more than the other 8th and roast location because it's more relaxing vibes to me. I got a cold brew coffee and it was good.. overall good experience.
google avatar

Bryan C.

Yelp
Very cool, local coffee shop. Good amount of space to sit, work, or hang out. They have some great breakfast foods and a nice selection of rotating seasonal drinks!
google avatar

Nate M.

Yelp
Nashville has some killer coffee shops and 8th & Roast is no exception! I came here to kill some time before heading into Downtown for a meeting. The parking is tough, but there are a few spots in front and a private parking lot on the side of the building. Inside there is plenty of space to sit and even a private meeting room you can rent for large groups. For the coffee I went with the usual, cold brew and a veggie quiche to eat. The quiche was ok, but could have used some spice. It was large and filled me up enough to get through the morning. The coffee was delicious, like two cup delicious. Smooth flavor and no bitter aftertaste. I drank it black and it was perfect. They roast everything at their second location and you can tell there's passion in every cup. When in the area, this will definitely be my go to coffee shop.

Amber D.

Yelp
Service was decent and came our quick. Coffee was subpar and expensive. The breakfast sandwich was good and so was the gluten free muffin.
google avatar

Taylor O.

Yelp
Incredible ambiance, inventive lattes, great smells from the bakery. The only reason I removed a star was the lack of gluten free options. They had an impressive selection of alternative milks. The yellow lighting and bricks created a woodsy, old fashioned feel. A gorgeous and brightening coffee shop for a rainy day. Conveniently located next to a cute thrift shop and lots of parking. Love love love. Ratings: Dairy Free options: 9/10 Gluten free options: 2/10 Low carb options: 8/10 Overall deliciousness: 8/10 Ambiance: 10/10

Elyse B.

Yelp
Quick and polite service. The baristas really know their stuff and can help you pick the best beans for home!
google avatar

Britt C.

Yelp
Doing some vintage shopping on a rainy Saturday. Stopped by for a warmer. Cozy and relaxed. Suggest The Cardigan while it lasts.
google avatar

Haru Y.

Yelp
Got the "cardigan" seasonal drink with oat milk - honey, cinnamon, espresso (opted out of graham cracker topping). The taste was subtle but delicious and perfect for a rainy overcast day. Their quiches are gluten free and got potato goat cheese quiche. It was pretty good but maybe not the freshest. Also gluten free pumpkin choc chip muffin. Muffin was delicious and I like that they warm it up. Chill warehouse vibe with lots of large tables for seating. Lots of people with laptops doing work.
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
8th & roast is an excellent study or hangout spot. There is more bar seating than tables, but there are plenty of plugs available if you bring your laptop or devices. There isn't a ton of seating compared to larger coffee shops such as barista parlor in east Nashville, but for the size they utilize the seating amount with the space they have. The staff was very friendly and responsive when I came as well. I ordered a peach pastry and it was surprisingly exceptional for being a coffee shop. Will definitely be returning as a study spot!
google avatar

Lauren W.

Yelp
I stopped in here for a pick me up on a rainy afternoon and it was lovely. Not crowded, plenty of table space. Not too loud either so good for working! I got a latte with dulce de leche syrup. So good!! The perfect amount of sweetness. Staff was super friendly. I will be back!
google avatar

Aspen K.

Yelp
Came here with my boyfriend and got a matcha with oat milk and vanilla. He got a cold brew. Was amazing! Would def recommend
google avatar

Lacey B.

Yelp
When I travel, a must-do for me is finding local, craft coffee. I found 8th & Roast from an online search and was pleased with my pick! Fun seasonal flavors and drinks were available. I ordered the iced tiramisu which was described as a vanilla americano with marscapone and brown sugar cold foam. Definitely for those who love a sweeter drink but not overwhelming!
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Updated post... so I must say that after my review, one of the owners reached out to me to learn more about my experience. I cannot express enough about how special that was. This let me know that the owners have a certain level of experience expected when it comes to their customers. The owner was receptive of what I had to say and extremely gracious in apologizing for the experience. I explained that everyone is just not that person to give you that customer experience and I get that but it also leaves a certain taste in your mouth. Well, I have experienced the coffee again and this time I brewed it at home and let's just say; the coffee is delicious. Thank you to the owners of 8th & Roast for winning me over. I will be back :-) Thanks
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
An amazing cold brew! Loved the macadamia but milk and the staff were super friendly. Such a cute little spot.
google avatar

Hannah G.

Yelp
Not sure what the title "best in Nashville" is all about. It was good coffee and quick service, but there wasn't anything that really made me want to go back. Seemed like the local millennial hang out.
google avatar

Jerry S.

Yelp
Coffee is amazing. The quality of the coffee is superb. I wish they bring back the Kentucky Blueberry blend.
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
Years ago when it was owned and roasted with Lisa, it was possibly the best in town alongside Crema. Then it was bought out and the quality of coffee has gone down some. Overall, it's still ok but they definitely lean a bit toward Starbucks business mentality. Breakfast biscuits have shrunk in size, a crapload more swag, and a staff that's just like "meh just a job". Nevertheless, if the only other option open is Dunkin or Starbucks, this is still a much better option! Btw, now Lisa and her cool partner run the absolute best coffee spot in the city, Osa!
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Friendly staff! (Cute boys making coffee!) Cool vibe and fast service. The menu looked like they had lots of good choices! The tea was so delicious!! Will definitely be going back to try out the coffee.
google avatar

Eliza D.

Yelp
Baristas are nice and the espresso is solid. Also good community atmosphere during the weekdays. A bit more touristy on the weekends.
google avatar

Harry H.

Yelp
No sugar free syrups. Yelp is making me type 63 more letters I visited the organic market next door and saw this coffee shop. I went in to order and I asked what sugar free syrups they have. Lady tells me none.
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
I love this place! Good coffee, great music selection, free parking, easy to find and plenty of seating. Feel free to have a seat by the window and people watch!
google avatar

Rosko L.

Yelp
This place has some awesome vibes, Great colors, and very well lit. The coffee is great, but not the best in nashville. I made a YouTube video here labeling it one of the best in Nashville but the competition is real here in Nash. I will say that it is a very youthful place and that makes the day go by when working on your laptop. Very good energy ! @Whats Up Rosko
google avatar

Sherrill T.

Yelp
Ummmm, delicious and QUICK! My coworkers and I treated ourself to some local coffee and found this place a couple miles away from work. They were insanely busy but got the three of us served in less than 5 minutes. I grabbed a caramel latte and a cheddar scallion fold over and that was quite the tasty combo. I like trying new, local shops and now that this is so close, I'll probably be back numerous times! Gotta try that pimento cheese next time...
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
Snagged an iced dolce latte with oat milk for a quick stop between shopping! Loved it! One of the best places in Nashville. 5/5 for sure!
google avatar

JP M.

Yelp
Really great coffee and a really great location with cool vibe. I was only a Nashville for a few days flying solo, and needing to do a little work for a few hours, I was hoping for a cool, local cafe that wasn't Starsucks. This little gem caught my eye, and I'm super happy it died. Thoroughly enjoyed the delicious pour over, and even the drip brew I chased it with a couple of hours later. Friendly staff, great vibe, delish coffee they roast themselves locally, and will def be back again the next time I'm in Nashville for sure.

Steph G.

Yelp
popped in for an afternoon pick-me up. we ordered a large cold brew with almond milk and a large sweet iced coffee. Hefty price tag (hence the 4 star rating- $11 for both), but definitely a reliable cup of coffee. I'd prob opt for the plane cold brew next time- the condensed milk/thai tea description had lured me into the sweet iced coffee but it was a tad bitter. would 100% be back for more caffeine- perhaps will try their hot beverages next time.
