Yelp
99 Ranch is a solid option for Taiwanese-Chinese (Asian) groceries in the greater DC area, especially when compared to the Great Wall in Rockville.
What stands out first about 99 Ranch is just the physical appearance of the store--large, airy, and fairly neat. It doesn't feel nearly as claustrophobic as the Great Wall in Rockville, and getting in/out of the parking lot is much easier.
Overall selection is pretty good thanks in part to its larger size. The produce section is arranged pretty well, though the overall quality is comparable to Great Wall, so okay rather than great. Sauces and frozen dumplings are also areas of strong selection, though I agree with another reviewer who points out that the snack selection is rather weak. (I had a hard time finding pineapple cakes that I wanted to send to a friend)
Prices are comparable to Great Wall, though there's variability by produce. For instance, frozen soup dumplings are about 50 cents cheaper than GW, but the green onion crackers I like are 50 cents more. There do seem to be a few more sales though, with a lot of them clearly marked and displayed in prominent places, which I appreciated.
Biggest weakness with 99 Ranch is still the store organization, which was cluttered despite its size, making it hard to find things. For instance, in most Chinese supermarkets, noodles, tofu, wonton skins, etc--prepackaged items that need to keep refrigerated--are generally kept in the same area in the store. At 99 Ranch, there were at least two or three areas where these items were spread out, which meant that I'm still not sure if 99 Ranch carries Sun's packaged ramen or not. Similarly, canned drinks don't have their own dedicated aisle, but are placed on top of the open freezers for dumpling and seafood, which run the length of the store. So while I'd be surprised if 99 Ranch doesn't carry canned winter melon tea, I did not see it as I island-hopped from one open freezer to another.
No full-fledged food court, unfortunately, but the takeout bento/BBQ/dim sum corner is reasonably priced and the employee was friendly. Customer service, at least based on this first, single visit, was decent rather than dismissive.
I'm not sure how 99 Ranch Gaithersburg compares with its Fairfax counterpart or the GWs in Germantown and Fairfax, but it's closest acceptable option to me and it's good enough. I just wish the produce were a little better quality--cleaned, wrapped--and that the store was better organized.
