The 35 Best Restaurants in Porto, Portugal | Eater

"This family-run establishment has been serving wood-fired fare since 1985. The counter is the best place to taste the excellent food coming out of the kitchen, but there are set tables for larger groups as well. Start with cod fritters and local presunto (cured ham), then move on to mains such as veal and potatoes roasted for hours over wood. Finish with rabanadas (French toast) or creme do céu, which consists of mousse, biscuits, and creamy egg custard. Best for: A true taste of Portuguese tradition in an equally traditional setting." - Rafael Tonon

Google
Off the hook amazing food atmosphere and service! Go. Just stop reading and make reservations. Veal is fantastic. Enough for two. Duck rice is also great. We order red wine from Douro, salad, cod app and Milk from heaven with cookie. Not sure what else I could possibly say than just go here and find out what real Portuguese cuisine and hospitality is like. Love this place!

Google
A quaint, well-maintained restaurant with traditional azulejo tiles and frequented by locals, a sign of quality. The service is friendly and helpful. The menu features characteristic dishes, beautifully presented and generous portions, and the wine list is excellent. Prices are in keeping with the ambiance. The veal is exceptional, and the hake is incredibly fresh. Although it's not in the city center, it's located across from the subway.

Google
What a delicious experience! We were lucky to have come upon this restaurant as it was next door to our hotel. The menus offered just enough options and variety. Delicious wine and exceptional food and service. You will not want to miss you on this dining experience when in Porto! Reservations needed!

Google
Great local food. You’ll leave with a full belly. Just know that the appies and garlic toast are not free and will be charged to your bill so you might as well eat it.

Google
Great traditional Portuguese food. Went here for lunch on a Sunday without reservation, got a seat at the bar. Service was very friendly and efficient. Had the roast lamb with potatoes and rice - so good! Lamb was juicy and full of flavour.

Google
The famous goat was a disappointment. The three person portion was mostly bone, meat tasted a bit bitter, otherwise rather tasteless. Texture wasn't as soft as i would expect it to be based on roasted goat experience i had elsewhere. Not worth the price

Google
Absolutely amazing! A little bit of a stroll from the city centre of Porto but well worth it. Best Codfish dish I've ever had and the tenderloin was absolutely perfect too. Very nice staff and great atmosphere. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to try authentic Portugese food when in Porto.

Yelp
Old-school European ambiance with polite and attentive waitstaff. The octopus filet was wonderful - tasty and very tender, however, we were disappointed with the special of the day, roasted lamb. We enjoyed the starter of ground veal-stuffed pastries, as well as the bread, dessert, and wine.

Yelp
Typical Portuguese fare is what you'll find here. We had the bolinhos de bacalhau to start the the tripe stew and the roasted goat to share. Both were absolutely delicious. The tripe was surprisingly soft, not chewy at all. Both entrees were served with rice and puréed spinach. My favorite part though was the dessert. We tried two, the egg almond tart and the bolo de biscoito, which I venture to say it's almost like the Portuguese version of tiramisu, made with Maria cookies instead of lady fingers and very creamy. Service is very attentive and friendly.

Yelp
We wanted an authentic experience and it exceeded our expectations! First, Sérgio took us to the oven to see and offer us the lamb being prepared that night. Paula helped us select the best appetizers and dishes to try. We speak no Portuguese (unfortunately), we are so grateful that Sérgio and Paula spoke English and were able to help us! Between 5 people we shared the Lamb (amazing but limited portions based on availability, our favorite), Sausage (so creamy, unlike any we have as before), Octopus, Octopus rice, and Cod Fish (croquettes?) and left stuffed! Highly recommend EVERYTHING we ate. Obrigada Paula and Sérgio!

Yelp
This review is solely based on the tripe stew and the service. I got my order as a takeaway and the stew is delicious. They packed me a small portion of rice, which does go well with it because the stew is very flavorful. The portion is also ginormous and I was only able to eat a quarter of it. It comes with a lot of bean and meat as well. The texture of the tripe is perfect, just a little chewy, but so tender! The waitstaff at the front spoke English well, was very friendly, and made sure I didn't have to wait too long to get the order. They do have a different menu every day and I believe Tripe stew is served on selected days - I went on a Wednesday!

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience here! Linda was fantastic and made us feel so welcome. From appetizers to dessert, it's a must for those traveling in Porto who want an authentic home cooked meal.

Yelp
The food has great potential; however, the tourist trap "tax" makes it an option I simply can not recommend. Our table was charged 32 Euros for bread, butter and olive oil. Note, as our waiter placed two bottles of olive oil on our table he felt it best to charge €12 for each.(6€ each) I recommend avoiding this place.

Yelp
Fantastic, traditional family restaurant. Cozy and welcoming ambience, friendly staff and good food. The five of us shared an entire little goat lamb, and it was delicious.

Yelp
Zé António is a miserable host. We travel 200+ days a year and know our restaurants, from local spots like this to Michelin 3 stars. I can say this was one of the worst experiences, due to the disgusting rudeness of the owner/manager. Doesn't matter how food tastes; service comes first and in that Antonio is a failure.

Yelp
Excellent traditional Portugese food-- amazing meats, fish, veggies, etc. Portions are huge, wine was delicious and all the food was inexpensive. Off the beaten path, definitely, but not far from the center of Porto. I highly recommend this spot for a wonderful culinary feast.

Yelp
Very Nice family restaurant, very local, no english speeking, no internet, but a lot of locals enjoying the food as much as we did.

Yelp
Really, what's with all these raving reviews? It's like a collective madness. I understand the restaurant has a different menu each day, but all of the dishes we had were barely passable. The €6 couvert of chewy, inedible skin bits of bacalhau drowned in oil and chickpeas that was dropped on our table along with the €2.50 basked of bread would usually be refused, but we were so hungry we gave it a try. And as I said above, chewy and inedible. My wife's fish was bland and the accompanying salad lacked a lot of love. No seasoning or salt, just drowning in oil. My bacalhau was quite the opposite: very salty and heavy. Tons upon tubs of oil. There's not enough bread or potato in the world to take care of that. Our bodies couldn't handle it. I thought maybe the house wine would help, but it turned out to be an acid better suited to vinagre the salad. Maybe the name and tradition is what keeps people coming. Maybe it was a bad night. But we don't understand these raving reviews, really.

Yelp
What an incredible meal we had at A Cozinha do Manel last Saturday (June 28th). After eating poorly in two different cities in Portugal we decided to work hard at finding a good restaurant--it was well worth the effort. The ambience was wonderful as we were ushered through a hallway past the kitchen into the common dining room. And then the food! We began the meal with alheira, a traditional smoked sausage, that served to introduce the presence of the wood ovens. Then the mains: the porco preto al forno was incredible, tender pork cooked in a wood-fired oven with chestnuts, cabbage and potatoes and the vitela assada no forgo was delicious as well. We enjoyed it all complemented with a wonderful young white wine. Although reviewers often note the extensive wine line for which the restaurant is known, we simply asked for the house vinho verde, which came well chilled and without label. It was the richest, most interesting vinho verde we'd ever tasted! Make the effort to get to the Bonfim neighbourhood and enjoy a meal at A Cozinha do Manel. It was one of our favourite dining experiences in Portugal.

Yelp
this restaurant is fantastic. best meal yet. great English speaking staff, food was enormous, relatively inexpensive for the huge portions. quality superb. highly recommend. i had the duck rice, which was served from a large baked clay pot with endless seconds. rodney had the oven baked pork. wonderful, flavourful, and again, a huge portion. also had the grilled octopus appetizer, bread, a bottle of green house wine, and total bill was 42euro. will go back at least once more before we leave porto!
