French-Asian Bakery A La Mousse Opens on South Street | Eater Philly

"Known for its pretty cakes infused with matcha, A La Mousse opened its third location on New Year’s Eve on South Street in the former pie shop Magpie after expanding to Narberth a couple months earlier. It first started selling its French-Asian sweets on 11th Street in Chinatown in 2015 and offers photo-ready single-serving baked goods like the matcha mille crêpe cake, which layers 20 thin green crepes, and a triple chocolate concoction with white chocolate mousse stacked on milk chocolate mousse atop a flourless dark chocolate cake. There are also adorable animal-shaped pastries, including a round pig made of vanilla cream cheese mousse, blueberry cream, and almond cake, and a bear with hazelnut feuilletine and chocolate mousse. I also noticed a menu of coffee drinks, fruit teas, milk foam teas, milkshakes, and matcha drinks such as a matcha white mocha latte." - Rachel Vigoda

I go to a new coffee shop every weekend. This is the best one I have found yet! The young sir was very knowledgeable, professional & efficient. The pastries are SO delicate & adorable, I will be back to try them all! The ambiance and aesthetic of the cafe is so cute and perfect for pictures and special events. I would love to have a tea party here. My espresso matcha latte was the best I’ve ever had, so perfectly crafted temperature, taste, and texture. And to make things EVEN BETTER their pricing is so reasonable and actually pretty cheap compared to other coffee shops with lower quality products. 100/10!

I ordered a cake for my daughter’s 100 Days Celebration and shared an inspiration photo of the design I had in mind. I really appreciated that the team was upfront about managing expectations, letting me know they would aim for about 70% resemblance to the photo — which I was perfectly fine with. But when I saw the final cake, it completely exceeded my expectations! It was not only stunning but also absolutely delicious. We received so many compliments from our guests. Thank you, Alamousse!

Google
A La Mousse is an absolute gem! Their cakes are a perfect blend of art and flavor—beautifully crafted, whimsical designs that taste as incredible as they look. Each bite is delicate, fresh, and delicious. If you’re looking for desserts that impress both the eyes and the palate, A La Mousse is a must-visit!

A little pricey but worth every penny! I just love the creativity and how cute these delicious edible desserts are. Everything I’ve ever had had always been so yummy. They have such a huge selection of treats and desserts.

I had a wonderful experience at this dessert shop! Tony, the manager, was incredibly patient and knowledgeable. He went above and beyond to provide custom accommodations for my family’s birthday cake, making sure every detail was just right. The ingredients were fresh, the taste was amazing, and the design was beautiful. My family was thrilled with the result. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious desserts and excellent service!

Google
What a darling pastry-cake-coffee shop. We loved the almond milk latte with cinnamon and oat milk latte with great flavor, perfect temperature, and carefully constructed. The black tea is already brewed and full bodied. Hard to select from the exquisite pastries, all decorated with meticulous detail. I passed on the black forest and matcha for a flour less chocolate torte, the only gluten free option, which was so smooth, rich, and chocolate-y. They cater, they make detailed cakes, and a variety of coffees and teas. Take home the proprietary coffees for home use. I love the ballerina decore touches. Clean restroom and store are wheel chair access. Several tables and chairs in the shop offer small or larger group setting. This is one of 4 stores, 2 in Chinatown, that is relative-extended-family-owned, a local small business

Google
First time visiting this location and it did not disappoint. The desserts were fresh and delicious. Kinda sad that they don’t make crepe cake and don’t serve desserts with ice cream.

Google
Very cute and easy to access. There are a variety of cute desserts that demand a promise of returning until you’ve tried them all. I had the matcha cappuccino and the polar bear dessert. Contrasting bitterness and sweetness provided a delicious mixture of flavor. It’s a good place to go with friends, for a cute date, or even a study session on a weekend morning.

Yelp
A La Mousse is one of my all time favorite and regular spots! You can't go wrong with anything you order, and they let you know what items contains nuts for allergy sensitive eaters. Great value for amazing quality. Don't skip this one. My go-tos are: Croissants (they go fast) Mango pastry (amazing) Every drink on the menu haha (their matcha is perfect) Birthday cakes for everyone in my life (they're all so good and come with the most helpful silverware, etc)

Yelp
If you're looking for the most adorable little desserts, look no further. We stopped in when A La Mousse was getting ready to close so there wasn't much left but we got a variety of items and everything was delicious, light, and adorable.

Yelp
Such cute delicious treats! They are on the pricier side but definitely worth it. We stopped in for special celebration this weekend. The staff was very nice and the pastries were delicious. My favorite was the blueberry cheesecake bunny my friend's favorite was the orange.

Yelp
Ordered some dessert from here for my daughter's two month birthday. It had an amazing presentation to it. The place has a good variety of cakes and other dessert. I really liked the chocolate cake we got from there. It tasted really good.

Yelp
Food: I got a chance to try some of the pastries. I tried the Mango: sweet and white chocolate glazed shell over a mango mouse cake. This was delicious and perfect for me as it was not too sweet. I also tried the tangerine and polar bear mousse which was also very good. Service Service was great and quick. Ambiance There is plenty of places to sit with calming music playing in the background.

Sandra S.

Yelp
We stopped here for coffee drinks (we had a mocha latte and vanilla mocha latte ) which were very good without being overly sweet. We sampled the canele "bite" pastry which was tasty. The pastries here are exquisitely beautiful and the children's treats are so charming they will be irresistible for the little ones! Whether you just enjoy delicious and beautiful pastries or need to bring a dessert to impress, this is the place!!

Yelp
I've only had the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte here & it was delicious. When I visit again I will most likely try their pastries. Cute spot

Shervin A.

Yelp
Fresh pastries and great coffees. Service may be slow for some, but with patience it's worth the wait. Nice modern ambiance.

Yelp
I never had a mango mousse cake, probably never saw one in US, France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong .. Came here because I was nearby today. Saw this and just had to try it because I love mangos. This is the lightest cake I've ever had, and so full of mango flavors. How is this possible? The outer layer is thin, crunchy, and delicious. Inside is the lightest mousse cake with the perfect mixture of mango filling. Every bite is perfect. It is not too sweet and is even better than eating a mango. Can this be possible? You have to try it yourself. And it's not expensive ($9.50) when you see how much work has been out into making this.

Yelp
Too stupid for their own good. As of 9/3/24 they now only use paper straws. I don't support businesses that are this brainwashed and can't think for themselves. Is it that difficult to comprehend that paper and liquids don't work well together??! I don't feel sorry for any business owner this inept that goes out of business. I'm handed a drink in a PLASTIC cup and then told "we don't do plastic straws any more." Let's even give them the benefit of the doubt and pretend the cup is not plastic (it is) and it's made from 100% recycled materials...THESE SAME MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE FOR STRAWS!!!! YOU KNOW, THAT WONT DISINTEGRATE AFTER 90 SECONDS OF BEING IN YOUR DRINK!
google avatar

Yelp
I've visited A La Mousse a couple more times since my first review and I can tell you that my opinion of their desserts has not changed. Their desserts are spot on! However, my Cherry Blossom Matcha Latte left a lot to be desired. The drink was too watery and not very sweet. For a bakery that claims to be all about sweet stuff, the drink was actually kind of bitter. I think they may have said that they didn't make enough of the cherry blossom part of it, I'm not sure, but if that's the case, maybe they should've made the drink again instead of giving it to me as it was. It wasn't very pleasant to drink at all, so I threw it out and feel I wasted my money on it. :(

Yelp
For my mom's birthday, I got her a little heart cake. Everything though these desserts are a little pricey, it's so worth it. My mom loved it and really got to savor the delicious taste that just melts in your mouth. The dessert is light and airy-feeling, so it doesn't feel unhealthy at all. This was a great little surprise that I got my mom, and I would totally do it again.

Yelp
The best place for pre-made dessert assortment, last minute desserts for one or many, milkshakes, adorable macarons, and even some gluten free options (love the chocolate blueberry cake!). Clean, bright and modern atmosphere and friendly, attentive staff. I look forward to trying their seasonal treats like mooncakes and ordering a custom cake in the future. We have ordered the green tea mille crepe cake from the location in Center City and it was otherworldly. What I love about Asian desserts is that they're not overwhelmingly sweet. My son loves the brown bear mousse bomb and the animal shaped macarons. The drinks are fantastic too. Perfect for the "grab a coffee" kind of dates when you're bored of coffee and a muffin.

Yelp
I learned something today. I was just in the area looking for a good cup of coffee and a place to sit and be for a while. This looked as good as any. While I was here I saw Hokkaido cheesecake. And I learned that the Japanese have their own cheesecake style. I'll say this about it. If you like rich, creamy, and sweet, this might not be for you. This is a little lighter. Not as dense. You could probably eat two slices of this and want more. But that's not a bad thing at all. It's a good change of pace when you don't want something heavy. Hazelnut cappuccino hit the spot too. This place is worthy of your time.

Yelp
This is a conveniently-located business (off of Montgomery Avenue) that serves delectable pastries, creates memorable birthday cakes, and crafts excellent coffee-based drinks. The servers are friendly and efficient with service. Some of the highlights of the pastries are the cinnamon rolls and vanilla-cream-filled beignets. My favorite drink is the cherry blossom latte--so tasty! Also, I ordered a birthday cake from here that was worth every dollar--rich icing, delectable layers, and fresh strawberries. They also provide serving utensils and plates. A special place for special occasions!

Yelp
My wife stopped over quickly to get some birthday treats for a friend and brought home a few things to try as well, including tiramisu for me to try out. Great flavor, with good balance of sweet, creamy, and the coffee taste. Texture was pretty good too. I also tried a few bites of her GF chocolate cake, which was really good as well. Hope to stop by again in the future to try out other stuff!

Yelp
Why come out of hibernation to post a review, you ask? Well.. this store has gotten three strikes from my family, so I want to share my experience with you to save you from disappointment. Strike 1: Our first birthday cake order from here. We picked a simple chocolate cake for hubby's birthday. He is not a fan of strawberries, so we requested the chef to make it pretty without them. For the price, the cake looked pretty lame. The chef put some chards of chocolate and a splash of some gold. But the worst part was the calligraphy of Happy Birthday. There was no elegance in that. Nevertheless, cake tasted good though, so we decided to give them another shot. Strike 2: For my 5 yo's birthday, she picked a beautiful "fairy" cake. We went to pick up the cake at 4 pm as decided only to find out that they forgot to make it. Apparently, several other people had ordered the same cake for that day, and they just missed ours. Thankfully, they agreed to delivered the cake by 6 to our house. The kids patiently waited and finally the cake arrived for the party, albeit late Strike 3: This time it is my birthday, and the family still wanted to get a chocolate mousse cake from this place despite my protests. We all picked a chocolate cream cake but requested repeatedly not to include strawberries, neither on the top nor in the middle, as per hubby's insistence. The staff made a clear note of "no strawberries" on the order slip. We went to pick up on my birthday and the person showed us the cake through a tiny window on the box under the handle. We were shocked to see the strawberries on the top, not to mention that the cake looked very different from the design we chose. No matter, we decided we could pick the berries out before we eat. There was no apology at this point. Fast forward to the evening, we cut the cake and lo!, the middle layer is lined with huge chunks of strawberries. Hubby was very upset. So we called the store to complain about this. The attendant kept us on hold for 10 minutes as he talked to the manager. When he returned to the call he asked if we were allergic to the strawberries.. the answer was no.. Phew! At least it wasn't a health hazard. But I told him that my husband really does not like strawberries and we were upset. At this point, the attendant says we have two options, 1/ a $15 gift card to the store that he will send to my phone or 2/ take the cake back and pick up another chocolate cream cake that they have ready in the store. It was very late, and we were frustrated and tired, so we agreed to take the gift card. Needless to say that I have yet to receive that text. Don't get me wrong, the cakes taste good, but for the price, their service sucks! The cashiers seem disinterested in being there and even less enthusiastic about resolving issues. Please don't rely on them to make your day special because they can't get the one job they have right most of the time.

Yelp
This is my first time ordering a cake from them. My daughter just graduated from college so I wanted to get a special cake for her. The ordering was done online, and payment was via Venmo. Correspondence was via texts, and the process was quite simple. If you look at their website there is a link where you can order custom made cakes, etc. I was impressed and glad they had many variety of cakes to choose from. One mistake I made was not specifying this was a graduation cake. I simply asked to them put "Congratulations". When my husband picked up the cake it came with a Happy Birthday topper Anyway, they cake came packaged beautifully. I chose strawberries with fresh cream, and it was reminiscent of the French style Japanese strawberry cake I grew up eating in Japan. I will definitely order more cakes from here!

Yelp
Some things you discover through a bit of serendipity. Easter Sunday the FDC and I went to visit the Matriarch's final resting place. We like to go early before the cemetery gets crowded as it's a special day. After, we decided to stop for bagels. Ended up at a bagel place in Narberth on Montgomery Ave. impulsively I decide to also get a croissant as they looked good. It wasn't good, and FDC says hey, let's check out A La Mousse. Sure. It's a block away. Why not? I am so glad we did. It's possibly the most immaculate bakery I've ever been in, for starters. Then, the pastries, well, look at the pictures. That's not an apple, it's pastry. Stunning. I get a chocolate croissant and a Hawaiian Lemonade Tea. FDC gets an almond croissant and pastries to go. So, a break here. FDC majored in French at university and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris for a year. This woman knows pastries. She told me to write: "This. This is magnificent French-Asian pastry, combining French ingredients with a clean, delicate, delectable flavor. Not overly sweet, nor bland. This is magnificent." I have to agree, there was a lovely balance, I didn't ever feel like I was eating a sugar bowl with those pastries (the Apple Pastry we took home was amazing). My croissant was light and well laminated with just a touch of chocolate. It was delicious. Oh and that Hawaiian lemonade tea? I crave it now. Staff were friendly, polite, fun and efficient. These are not cheap pastries, and they are worth every dime. We've already been back.

Yelp
Great place for desserts. Excellent selection and high quality. Wonderful, kind staff.

Yelp
I usually go to the Philly location but decided to check this one out. Kinda small, but super clean and has a large selection of goodies as the other location does. It's hard to not want to buy everything, as it all looks so artisan and delicious. I came here on my tea journey, and enjoyed my drink! No London fog, so I got a milk foam rose black tea. The tea was soooo good! I wasn't used to the milk foam as it was slightly salty. Different than what I was used to, but not in a bad way. Friendly staff!

Yelp
A La Mousse recently opened in Narberth in the former Juice Merchant location. Once I parked my car, I walked inside and saw the beautiful pastries sitting inside the glass containers including cheesecakes, teapots and chocolate mousse. A La Mousse also has a variety of drinks including coffees, teas and lemonade. They also had a variety of fruit lemonades. I decided to pick up a chocolate mousse and a mango lemonade. There were a variety of seats inside of La Mousse, but I decided to just take it to go. Once home, I had my chocolate mousse. It included two thin, circular sheets surrounding thick, creamy and savory chocolate mousse. It was absolutely delicious and quite filling. Also, the mango lemonade is quite different, but fairly tasty with a nice, rich mango flavor. Although, A La Mousse is fairly expensive, it's worth the price. The pastries are absolutely beautiful and very delicious. Altogether, A La Mousse serves some of the most absolutely delicious pastries and is a great addition to the Narberth/Penn Valley area!

Yelp
A La Mousse is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in Chinatown! It's such a cute cafe to visit with friends or a date. There are so many adorable desserts to choose from paired with a coffee or tea of your choice. There is limited seating but it's totally worth the wait. I plan on visiting the next time I'm back in Philly! 5/5 star experience for me!

Danielle M.

Yelp
Beautiful, tasty, elegant pastries. They are truly works of art. Presented elegantly too. They make wonderful " piece de resistance " desserts.
google avatar

Yelp
Friday date with the bestie and we had to make a stop here. We ended up with some cute little mousse cakes - hers lemon, mine pistachio/raspberry. Got a couple drinks and a slice of something a bit more traditional to go. Besides how beautiful their pastry case is, these little indulgent treats aren't overly sweet. I liked how crunchy the shell on mine was paired with how delicate the inside was. My date loved hers. Her mr. at home loved his... there are only a couple tables inside and we didn't stay long but liked the quiet ambiance a lot. The gal at the counter was super nice and helped me pick between things because I'm constantly afflicted with a terrible case of indecision.
google avatar

Suzamne R.

Yelp
This is the first bakery I've been to, were I've literally thought to myself...I could buy 1 of everything. I've been to this location several times and there's so much to like. The staff is friendly and helpful, the matcha teas are perfect and everything is beautiful. Do try the golden hazelnut cake, the triple chocolate cake, Japanese cheese cake, and the apple cream cake. If you are lucky to score their mini donuts, French eclairs or macarons..try them! My birthday cakes were amazing.

Kay S.

Yelp
Delicious but expensive light desserts. Attractive and appetizing cakes and mousses with fresh light taste and definitely eye appeal.
google avatar

Deanna N.

Yelp
Everything looks absolutely amazing. I wanted to buy everything. It looks too good to even eat to begin with. Nothing here is too sweet. I bought a drink and desserts. This place is one of those places that I want to keep coming back to try a bite of everything. If you like matcha, this is the place for you. I wouldn't order what I ordered again, but it's good. The prices do add up pretty quickly. It's an average of $7+ per item. They have a very extensive menu, so plenty of options!
google avatar

Holly F.

Yelp
So the pastries are good and the tea was really nice on a hot day. Yet it still cannot erase the bitter taste of bad business practices which is what the one star is for. On google they had a coupon for free drink and dessert stating it was valid 6/29/20-7/31/20 and nothing else. This is very misleading because firstly the employee wasn't sure what I was talking about at first then proceed to say it's for $20+ purchase. When we got the $20 purchase she only gave us the drink. When asked for the free dessert she states then that we need to spend $30+. Also there was a 10% off coupon which when asked it was for "special orders only" which was never stated on the coupon. All these misleading advertisements suggests tactics of bait and switch which misleads consumers to go in. Nice food but poor business practices, we will not be going back.
google avatar

Jeanesha R.

Yelp
I'm convinced this is the cutest cafe in Pennsylvania. It's in a perfect location never too crowded or busy. The pastry's and cakes are Delicious!!! the workers are polite, fast and professional. I'm so happy when my husband takes me here !!!
google avatar

Charlie E.

Yelp
OMG. Seriously the best hazelnut crunch cake thing ever. They have impeccable craftsmanship for all of their desserts. I think it's hilarious that they advertise them as healthy, though. I want 2k calories of sugar per cake, and I'm PROUD.. Think Cheesecake Factory level of decadence, but significantly tastier. 7.50 for most items here. Expensive, but worth it.
google avatar

michelle Marie R.

Yelp
Great addition to the area especially since the cc one is so far from me now. Beautiful decor and well made drinks. Cold foam tea is one of my fffaaavorittes. Hot oolong tea topped with a thick salty cream that confuses and delights the senses simultaneously. Hazelnut mousse flourless cake - aka giant kit kat a++ but be warned all the desserts are pretty rich and can be shared. Mocha coffee was good. Def can taste the expresso. Another plus - gluten free cake options.
google avatar

Denis J.

Yelp
Wonderful pastry shop in the heart of the main line. The tea selection is impressive and service is outstanding. They are open late making a perfect place for dessert after dinner - remember to save room next time! Happy with this great addition to the neighborhood! Afternoon or evening, this place is never closed!
google avatar

Elle M.

Yelp
I really only have to say the best matcha I have had since moving to PA, I had the cherry blossom matcha at their one location in downtown Philly and I've been hooked since
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
I love A La Mousse in the city, so I was pleasantly surprised that the quality in Narberth was identical! They have almost all the same signature drinks and most of the same window pastries. The menu in Chinatown is definitely more extensive (not sure if this is because of COVID) There's a decent amount of indoor seating that is unavailable right now because of COVID, and 2 small tables outdoors (2-3 chairs per table) Definitely a great little coffee/tea and pastry shop in the area! I highly recommend if you like good quality drinks and pastries. My favorites are their milk foam teas!

Katie N.

Yelp
Amazing. Got a custom cake and macaroons for my sister's bridal shower. The cake looked beautiful and every guest said how amazing the cake it tasted. I can not say enough good things. Rave reviews from all my guests. The woman who took my order was also so helpful and kind which made the experience even better. 1000% would recommend.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place!! The cakes are works of art and the service is stellar!
google avatar

Jessica O.

Yelp
Right on Montgomery ave, parking is right in front of the storefront. A La Mousse is a cute little bakery, with even cuter cakes. The pastries are deliciously flakey and they have multiple drink options. I personally recommend the Japanese soufflé pancakes, croissant, milk foam teas or the delicious hot chocolate. Everything thing was worth the price tag! 10/10 would highly recommend

Elissa B.

Yelp
I LOVE this cafe! The Mango is absolutely AMAZING and the other cakes are so cute with super unique and yummy flavors. Customer service was awesome, she helped me choose the mango and a coconut passion fruit dessert that was beyond perfect
google avatar

Rebeca R.

Yelp
Costumer service was not great. How is possible a nice place like this and they can not give you a real mug and get a actitud from the her and coffee didn't taste good.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Cute little cafe in the mainline. Drinks are great and pastries are amazing BUT if you havent been to the Chinatown location that's the one to go to

Tiffany N.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that in the past, I've had good experiences at this location. Today, everything I purchased tasted like cleaning fluid. I purchased 3 items. Half-way home I realized I hadn't received what I'd ordered. I went back 10 mins later, walked in and the 'barista' abruptly said 'I'm sorry we're closed'. He did listen long enough to exchange his mistake. Wish I hadn't already tipped him. I'm sad because this was one of my go-to's for special single desserts for myself and others. Hopefully this is an off day for them (vs their new standard).
google avatar

Lindsey B.

Yelp
I bought my friend mango mouse cake for his birthday and he raved over it. He said he's usually picky on mango flavors and A La Mousse nailed it!
google avatar

W C.

Yelp
So happy to see a wonderful expansion of A La Mousse here in Narberth PA. This is their second location. They have tons of wonderful desserts, bread, coffee, tea, and drinks! Everything looks so pretty and fancy! We tried the chocolate mousse, pikachu, and coffee mousse and all were amazing! The coffee mousse is my favorite, it's rich and flavorful. Would definitely come back for more! So happy to see this wonderful cafe addition in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Joanna W.

Yelp
I have been SO SO SO excited to try this new place! I purchased 3 individual smaller sized cakes for co workers' birthdays. I wanted to try everything in there , everything looked so delicious and their presentation is beautiful. The lady behind the counter was polite, friendly and knowledgeable. I also purchased some macarons, they didn't make it to the work party the next day , as I consumed them all that night!!!! I will admit it is a bit high in price, but definately worth it!!! All my co workers ABSOLUTELY LOVED their individual cakes and asked where I got them! A la Mousse is definitely a great addition to the Neighborhood. I wish them much continued success!!!!
google avatar

Rachel N.

Yelp
I love this place! It's really quaint and it's my daughter's favorite place to go for a treat. The staff is excellent, always warm and patient (which is ideal when your going with a toddler). The coffee is great (my go to is a vanilla latte) and my daughter loves both the cocoa and the milkshake, but for her nothing beats the cake that is made to look like Elmo and honestly it's delicious, too delicious to get a photo before she's taken a bite !

J. M.

Yelp
6" Chocolate mousse cake-to-go was fabulous! Love the cute mint-colored plates with matching cutlery. Plus a candle to boot! Perfect for any birthday soiree for 4!

Ben M.

Yelp
Ordered a cake and it came out perfect, in terms of taste and aesthetics. Friendly and quick service, very knowledgeable on their products.
google avatar

Emiliano T.

Yelp
For fun pastries and cakes, this place is great. Nice service and clean store. 4 stars only because they are SO overpriced - it makes us not want to go back. One small baguette (closer to a demo baguette) is $4 each! We would go much more frequently here if the prices were a little more fair.
