Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, June 2025 | Eater San Diego

"An all-day, bright fast-casual cafe near Cal State San Marcos offering plant-based, gluten-free bowls, wraps, and toasts made with plant-based sourdough, plus smoothies with no added sugars. The menu features items like a Miami Cuban bowl, Greek bowl, a surf-and-turf wrap with guajillo shrimp and carne asada, and the Santorini blue smoothie; the cheerful space is accented with colorful artwork and is run by owners who also operate a popular vegan Mexican restaurant in the region." - Helen I. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and had followed them on social media, so my expectations were probably a bit high. My husband and I visited on a Sunday. The dining room was nearly empty, and there was no one at the counter, so we placed our order through the self-serve kiosk. We didn’t receive any confirmation by text or email, so we waited. After about 10 minutes with no signs of food being prepared, I went to check. One of the bowls was apparently ready and had been sitting on the counter, but no one called out our name or said anything. The other bowl came out shortly after, and we were finally given our lemonade — which felt late, considering we were dining in. The food was okay. The chicken was too salty for my taste, and some of the vegetables (like the carrots) didn’t seem very fresh. To top it off, the receipt showed up in my email three hours later. With so many similar spots popping up in San Marcos, service and quality really make a difference. Sadly, we don’t plan on returning.

Stopped by recently on a day off and have been back several times since. Love that it's something fresh, flavorful, and healthy. Very convenient too! Not to mention the ambiance! It's nice to see a place in the community that offers health-conscious food especially in this fast paced world we live in where we don’t have enough time to care for ourselves. Vegan friendly options are available as well! Love the Miami bowl! But also enjoy making my own custom bowl as well!

The food at A Lo Fresco was SOOO good! I genuinely can’t stop thinking about it. It not only tasted amazing, but it felt good to eat. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. I got the Cuban bowl and my husband got the Spicy Mexican bowl, both were absolutely delicious. The Cuban bowl’s plantains still have me weak in the knees! And the chicken… wow. So tender, so flavorful, two things chicken often isn’t. The owner was incredibly kind, and I already felt like I wanted to leave a glowing review just based on how he treated us. But then we tasted the food… and were totally blown away. Healthy food can often be bland, but this was the furthest thing from it. Every bite was next-level. We’re here on vacation, and I so wish this place was near home because I’d eat here every single week. We took our food to go, but the inside was adorable, such a cute and fun vibe. Great energy, amazing food, and genuinely kind people. What more could you want? Seriously… to die for.

Oh Man these bowls were so good. We just bought a new home in North City area and wanted to try out these walkable restaurants. It was a bit slow in the area being a sunday and the university is not in session but still very comfy along the street. This was our first time to A Lo Fresco and the bowls were so good. I was thrilled with the food and the portions were very generous. We had four bowls and everyone loved it.

Always Fresh, Always Fire Alo Fresco hits the sweet spot every time. It's perfectly priced for the quality you get. It feels like you're eating clean without spending a fortune. The portions are solid, and the meat is always cooked just right. Definitely try the shrimp. It's fresh, well-seasoned, and never overcooked. The staff is friendly, and the vibe is relaxed. It doesn't feel like a "healthy" spot trying to be trendy. It just delivers. Friendly, good energy, no regrets.

This place is so pretty! But aside of aesthetics, the food is delicious. I find it to be a great price point for the quality and quantity of food. I have mostly tried the bowls because it’s an easy option for work lunch. The sauces are so delicious (I’m a sauce girl 😋) and the food is filling. I’ve enjoyed supporting this small business and recommend to everyone.

For someone who has a dairy allergy and several stomach issues, this place was perfect! No seed oils, gluten free! Their drinks and burritos were also really good and portions were hefty! Definitely coming back!

This is a review for their food truck. I had been excited to try it given they are seed-oil free. They were announced twice and they canceled both times last second with less than an 1 hour notice. Disappointing.

Yelp
It's rare to find a restaurant so genuinely committed to clean, quality food--but Lo Fresco delivers. From the moment I looked at the menu, I noticed something huge for me: no seed oils in any of their ingredients. That alone sets them apart. Their commitment to clean eating isn't just talk--you can taste it in every bite and you can literally see the avocado oil in the kitchen lol. I ordered the surf and turf burrito, and it was absolutely delicious. Packed with flavor, perfectly balanced, and nourishing. Lo Fresco is definitely a gem for anyone who cares about what goes into their body. It's refreshing to see a place prioritize clean ingredients without compromising taste. I'll absolutely be back.

Yelp
My husband and I love a lo fresco! We have tried the food a few times and it does not disappoint. The bowls are filling and the sauces are delicious. A great place to have a healthy meal. I am big on customer service so I have no complaints in that area. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
Stopped by recently on a day off and have been back bi-weekly since. Love that it's something fresh, flavorful, and healthy. Very convenient too! Especially when I'm more inclined to eat cheap fast food because of the overwhelming availability. It's nice to see a place in the community that offers health-conscious food. Vegan friendly options are available as well! Love the Miami bowl! That's my go to!

Yelp
Got treated here after run club and it was great!! I highly recommend the blue smoothie- it was so filling and delicious. The chia pudding lacked a little sweetness but I'm not sure if that's bc I had it right after the smoothie which felt naturally pretty sweet. I ended up adding a little honey to my chia pudding to make it sweeter- but that's just my preference! They seem to have many healthy food options that looked really good, I'll def be back!

Yelp
This restaurant located in the North City area of San Marcos is an absolute gem. The wide variety of dishes that they curate, especially the bowls, is incredible, and the service is outstanding. Despite arriving right at closing in my most recent visit, they welcomed me in and took my order with smiles on their faces. The prices might seem a little high on paper but the portions are so bountiful that one delicious Miami Cuban bowl (my personal favorite) typically lasts me two meals so it is well worth it. So glad they are here. I highly recommend stopping by and checking A Lo Fresco out if you are anywhere in North County. Doug (local resident)

Yelp
Great fresh food! Lots of healthy options, great flavor! We love their Mother Earth Bowl, the Cuban bowl, the Mexican bowl, and their overnight oats! It's become our new local favorite! Hoping they extend their hours so we can have dinner here too!! Yum!

Yelp
Place is never open when it says they are open. Don't bother calling either, they never answer the phone. I mean, if they cannot even get their hours of operation correct, do you really think they are being diligent with your food? I am not willing to risk it. They updated their hours after my review and fabricated some elaborate story. The magnitude of their response is very telling. All you had to do was apologize for not updating your hours in yelp and I would have wrote it off as an honest mistake and deleted the review and I still will. Or you can keep doubling down with your made up stories , keep the 1 star review, and the screenshot showing you updated the hours after I complained about it. The choice is yours.

Yelp
A Lo Fresco recently opened near CSUSM. I was so excited to try this place! I ordered a surf and turf burrito, so delicious! The owner was extremely nice, she explained the menu options when we walked in. Cute restaurant, nice indoor and patio dining areas!

Yelp
I've been looking forward to the opening of A Lo Fresco and I finally was able to give it a try today! I ordered the Cuban Bowl and Cucumber Sea Moss Lemonade. The team was very friendly and service was quick. The bowl was very flavorful with quality ingredients. The lemonade was the perfect addition. Will be coming back soon!

Yelp
A Lo Fresco's food truck was one of the vendors at Adobe Hill Winery in Fallbrook on Mother's Day. We had a reservation at the winery for 4:15 PM, and my in-laws placed our dinner order around 5 PM. Already, A Lo Fresco said they were out of some key ingredients, like tortillas, and we had to make some substitutions. As half an hour passed and we saw several other tables get their orders, my in-laws checked in and were told that A Lo Fresco was "working on it." An hour after we ordered, other tables still picking up their orders, still no food for us. My in-laws checked in again and were now told that they could no longer even make my caprese bowl at all, and only had the ingredients for the Cuban bowl. At this point we cancelled the order, my hangry 4-year-old had ice cream for dinner from the stellar ice cream food truck vendor, and we had to head home to get some more substantial food. We were extremely disappointed in the lack of professionalism and courtesy. The other major food vendor at the winery, a pizza guy, had run out of ingredients by the time we arrived, and we appreciated that he let us know up front that he was closing up shop. A Lo Fresco took our money and left us hungry for an hour, instead of being honest and giving us the opportunity to go elsewhere.
