Where to Eat in Portugal | Bon Appétit

"A 50-year-old family tavern in the Monchique mountains serving rustic, shareable plates that showcase local sausages—morcela, chouriço, and farinheira—and slow-cooked clay-pot lamb prepared in a wood-fired oven for deep, wood-smoke flavor." - ByMiguel Andrade

Typical local cuisine, stew dishes, nice wines and always crowded with locals. Very well stewed food thats super tender. Tastefull and fatty. Tomato salad had too much salt on it, just like the other food was quite salty. Reservation is required, opens at 12 for lunch, and pple are already waiting!

Lovely food and fast service. I have seen comments on here by people complaining they can't get in. My advice is very there when they open to guarantee a spot. We got here at 5 past 12 and only just got seated. After that it was a case of waiting for a table to free up. On average we paid 20e a head. Warm Bread, Olives as usual. 1ltr red wine and 2 cokes. 4 main meals 3 desserts 3 small coffee's and a melosa All good was cooked perfectly. No complaints here.

Amazing place with authentic Portuguese food. We had the tuna which was lovely with the vegetables and the ribs - so good! We loved it so much that we came back the next day and I had the Pernil which was just delicious. It's a small place, in summer you need to have a reservation.

Tasca do Petrol is one of a few remaining worth to visit restaurants specialising in the hinterland Algarve cuisine. Best dishes are meat and the cuisine is certainly different from the Algarvian typical restaurant. I make a special endorsement for kid goat in the oven. It has to be ordered, not normally available. I specially recommend it and as well the enjoyment of a trip through a stunning landscape.

We ordered “Assadura / Grilled Meat Monchique Style”. The dish consisted of pork chops cut into small bits and grilled with garlic and parsley. The taste was really good and the pork chops were soft inside (not red) and crispy outside. The dish was served with French fries and a tomato salad. The French fries were homemade and crispy and the tomatoes had a really rich taste. We ordered the white house wine which was fine. I had an almond cake for desert, very nice and not too sweet. I tried also some of the other deserts, such as the flan and chocolate mouse, and they were all really good. We got a free shot of Medronho, the local drink, strong and warming! Make sure to arrive early if you want all menu options, we arrived at 14:00 and some of the menu options were no longer available. The experience was great overall and for a good price, definitely recommend to go to this place for a nice lunch! Also make sure to leave a good tip!

You'll find this restaurant in a mountain village of a couple of houses, where you won't meet any people or cars on the way. Suddenly, the restaurant is full of people, and you'd better book a seat or you'll be left without a meal. Excellent choice of food, all very tasty, cooked at home. And yes, may be useful information, they accept only cash, no cards.

A place to go worth the extra miles , one of the best restaurant I've been in Portugal. A great combination of truthful host, great ingredients cooked with knowledge and honest service. Very nice selection of starters all home made a part from the cured meats I believe. Defenetly order the/ black pig jowls perfectly cooked old style no water bath, but I believe only available during weekends. In summer ask for the tomato salad best with no vinegar and only served with EVO and herbs, you'll taste the sun. All the vegetables come from the father's owner farm. Super honest prices as you can see from the receipt. Closed on Wednesday. Best to book as it's always pretty busy.

Yelp
We were told of this place, that it has a duck special Tuesday lunchtimes...its about 10-15 minutes from Monchique So we decided to go yesterday to try it out... a very worthwhile trip to say the least Good waiters, reasonably varied menu and reasonable prices, plenty of room - except for parking; not easy. Pretty busy Ok the food... I had the duck & rice...enough for 2 or 3 people...my partner ordered the roast pork (with 5 little roast potatoes) enough for 3 people...ok so you are warned!!! And was it good, wow. The duck was basically shredded with fluffy rice...the pork was roasted to within an inch of its life, so crunchy bits and moist bits - sooo good We had a 50 cl of wine, small glass for me as driver...boo hoo as it was very nice even if it does come out of a box Then one of us - no names, but not me, had the almond & fig pudding...she managed half & ate the rest today...rich and amazing This is a wonderful little find...only problem was we couldn't use a card but managed to rustle up the 34€ between us If we return this way, we return here for sure (Photos to follow upon return)

Yelp
Little gem in the middle of the Serra de Monchique. Certainly worth the drive over there. Lagos is kind of my second home in Portugal and all my local friends come here (that's how I got to know about it). Super friendly staff and AMAZING homecooked-style food!! Ha, and keep in mind the portions are pretty big (a portion is for 2 people, so ask half-portions to try more dishes). My suggestions though you can't go wrong with anything you ask: 0. Get the Presunto as a starter -- if you are in Monchique and you don't know they are famous for their presunto (prosciutto) you don't deserve to be there haha 2. Pork shoulder (available in the weekend - only order if you go early so you get the ones with the crispy skin 3. Lamb chops - amaaaaazing!!! 4. Secretos de Porco Bom apetite!!!

Yelp
Amazing place with incredible Chicken Piri Piri!! Service is fantastic and we'll definitely be back! It's the highlight of our yearly trip to the Algarve!!
