A1 Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar

The best sushi I’ve had out of all the surrounding towns. Large portions and always fresh and delicious. Highly recommend.

My wife and I had dinner here and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The sushi was very fresh and flavorful. The layers of different fresh fish in the sushi cake roll are the main reasons why my wife couldn't stop eating it. She also enjoyed the Dynamite Roll, which was deep fried and has a crispy exterior. I ordered both the Spicy Girl and Happy Girl Rolls. The Spicy Girl had a nice flavor, and the crunchy topping added a layer of texture that made the roll extremely flavorful. The pink seaweed wrapper and the shrimp tempura in the Happy Girl Roll made it my favorite. Those unique textures and the overall flavors made this roll my favorite. We also enjoyed the Wasabi Tuna Appetizer. It had a nice flavor, especially the roe like topping. We thought it tasted better after it was dipped in soy sauce.

Food was great, service was amazing. Place has a really nice atmosphere and we had a great time there. They have a hibachi grill in the middle and do all the standard fare as well as sushi. Highly recommend. Good prices. Great food, very good service. One of the best for authentic japanese cuisine in indianapolis area.

Great place for lunch. Chicken hibachi with all the sides salad and soup was freaking delicious. Nice place to go to relax had smooth jazz playing and a huge water fountain with fish. And it was clean I’ll be back

Shocked there isnt the cooking experience that a typical Japanese steakhouse has. The food was ok, salty.

I have held off on reviewing A1 for a very long time. I eat Hibachi and Sushi a lot. Every time I come here, I’m in the bathroom immediately after. I’m not anywhere else. The place is so run down outside, that it always makes me hesitate to like the place. The hibachi is way too covered in sauce. I got it last time, scallops and only ate the rice because it had way too much sauce smothering everything. Today I got the 2 roll lunch special and the bacon wrapped scallops that were way overcooked and yet again smothered in sauce. The Philadelphia roll and shrimp roll were fantastic. I love their ginger salad dressing and miso soup. If you like hot tea their green tea is fantastic. I have had a lot of food on multiple occasions from this place in it tears up my family and multiple people I knows stomachs. Kabuto, Kumo, etc do not. Today was my last day trying to eat here.

I loved our service here. Our server Jessie was awesome. Very kind. We were checked on frequently. I got plenty of water refills. I would come back just for the customer service. Now I am picky so it could just be me but the fried rice was not good. It is nothing like other hibachi fried rice. The chicken hibachi meal was overall a no for me. The chicken was off. The person I came with liked the shrimp, scallop and steak combo dinner and did not mind the fried rice. The dragon roll wasnt wrapped with seaweed all around so it fell apart easy. I liked it overall.

My step father and mother truly enjoy this place. Such a great friendly staff. Good sushi and hibachi. Worth the trip out.

Great food but waitress was Demanding a Tip, I was close to giving the lady one but she made me not tip her, she even followed me outside which is horrible customer Service!

The food is very tasty and filling. The restaurant has neat decor and is clean. The employees are very nice. There is plenty of parking. We called ahead and the food was ready and waiting. The reason for a 4 and not a 5 star is that the steak could be more tender. I will be back and would recommend to others. Just know if you get the steak it may require some extra chewing.

Miso soup is really good, Kani salad is really good. Pink lady is really good, mochi ice cream is good.

Service was fast and friendly! Hibachi chicken was amazing! I also got the Boston sushi roll and spring roll but got excited and forgot to take the photos. My husband loved the general Tso spicy chicken. Definitely worth a trip to Mooresville!

Worst place I've been to in years. The food was the saltiest food I believe I have EVER had. Their rice had lots of black pepper in it. It tasted horrible. Their chicken was odd tasting. It was crispy but not deep fried. My wife's vegetables had an odd flavor. Neither of us ate much of our food. It was inedible. Worst food in years. I told the manager that our food was more salty than any other restaurant I've ever been to. He said that's how they make it. Fine... You have the worst food I've had in years. The portions were very small as well. If you run a restaurant and your customers dislike the food and you don't remake their food or give them their money back, you're going to lose money. Not only will I never go here, hopefully everyone that reads my review will not go here and choose a different restaurant. Not only have you lost my business, how many other people will go elsewhere after reading my review. If 10 people go elsewhere, you've lost their business too. The $15 you could have refunded to me, may cost you hundreds or a thousand down the line. Think about future losses instead of the $15 you could have lost today. Bad way to run a business. Reviews matter.

Great food and excellent service! Food came fast and I loved the general tso's chicken! Kids chicken nugget meal came in a neat plate which my daughter loved. Highly recommend this place!

I come here any chance i get. The lady thats always in there (i think she might be one of the owners) she is SOOOOO sweet! Always so cheerful and soo nice to us and my son. The black widow roll is the best roll ive ever had in my entire life. The miso soup never really tastes the same as the time before but thats okay with me. The setting is dim lit and they have coy fish swimming in the middle of the restaurant. Its beautiful. A relaxing setting and a plate of sushi?? Id die happy here

I'm a regular at A1 Japanese and never had an empty cup or an empty stomach. The service is quick and efficient and the workers are a joy, you can tell they love their job. There's a wide range of Japanese food from sushi, soups, noodles, and more! It's authentic and one of a kind, each dish is bursting with flavor that is contrasted by its spices and herbs.

I have eaten here many times and the food and service have always been excellent. I have tried both the hibachi and sushi and have never had anything bad. My favorite is the lunch bento boxes which gives me a little of both, hibachi and sushi. The servers are always attentive and my drink glass is never empty for very long. The hibachi is not the kind where you sit at the table and get a "show" but it tastes just as good. I did ask about the salmon and they told me it is farm raised. I have read several articles that farm raised salmon is less nutritious but the flavor is fine, so I eat it anyway. I have found that almost all restaurants are using farm raised salmon, so I am sure it is a step they have to take to keep costs down. If you are looking for a variety of Asian food, I can suggest this as a nice alternative without having to travel out of Mooresville.

Great restaurant. I was in a group trying to things a good place to eat and I'm glad I found this place. Loved the service and the food. Will be coming back.

Holy cow they must be serving up some holy cow blessed by the lord himself because this place is excellent! My beef was tender and flavorful and cooked to the exact level that I asked for. Hands down the best dining experience I had while in town for business. I ate here twice in 4 days! As I write this, I'm on my way back to Houston where I hail from, so I'm no stranger to Japanese steakhouse and sushi concepts. This place definitely knows what they're doing. We also had some sushi and rolls after our server informed us that they have a new master chef behind the sushi bar who was actually trained in Japan, and so on our next visit we purposely sat at the sushi bar. We could see the knife work and skill that this chef possessed and it was so entertaining to watch him make all sorts of rolls as the tickets were printing. Overall, our favorite was the black angel roll and I would say it's a must try here. Service was also excellent and the place was clean and relaxing.

Close to Mooresville good place for sushi. Love the salmon lovers plate and tempura shrimp. Overall positive experience.

The Sushi Cake has ruined me for all other sushi options from any other restaurant, ever. Outside of Reese's & donuts, it is my FAVORITE food. The perfect ratio of fish to cream cheese & avocado to spicy mayo, & the presentation is beautiful/ a unique style of "roll". The Treasure Island appetizer is also bomb.

We love this place normally. Tonight things just weren't the same or as good. Even the service was slow. The tuna dumplings were different than they've been all previous times as was the dancing scallop roll was different too. Usually it comes with thin sliced scallop on top. The tempura appetizer was smaller and not very shareable 1 little piece of broccoli, 1 zucchini, 1 sweet potato, 3 onion rings. We tried the chicken hibachi for the first time, the portion was large, unfortunately it was very salty. Will go back as we've enjoyed this place for years. Hopefully it was just an off night.

The outside of the building doesn't look great but don't let that deter you. The food is delicious. We ordered the chicken hibachi, salmon sushi, and California rolls. Both he rolls and sushi was the freshest I've seen around. The hibachi meals were hot and there was plenty of food on the plate. The prices at every reasonable for amount of food and quality is the sushi. Highly recommend this place is your in the mood for Japanese.

Anytime our kids come back home this is where they want to go for dinner. Sushi is excellent as well as anything on the dinner menu.

Love this place. great atmosphere. Excellent food. Friendly helpful staff who seems to like it there almost as much as I do. I wish i could eat here everyday. This is where i bring my friends that when i can count on having a good experience. My kids love it here. I always tell everyone this is my favorite place in town.

Where to start...As we pulled up in the parking lot and noticed the police were sitting outside so we knew we were off to a good start of the night. It states that it's a hibachi grill, yet there is only one grill and you cannot sit by it. our salads were drowning in dressing. We ordered the hibachi but it came out botched. All the food was underwhelming and undercooked plus drowning in sauce. Steak was blue, scallops were mushy and the service was terrible. The server only came to bring our drinks and food but was a ghost after that. Those reviews are fake, this place was so terrible that I would not come back even if the meal was free.

I've been coming here for the past 5 years and I have not been disappointed.. I feel this is on of the best sushi spots here in Indy.. and believe me I've tried several.. I will continue to come here as long as they are open. This is my spot for sushi .. I highly recommend it ..

The staff is phenomenal. The rolls are delicious and artfully crafted. If you are looking for a mom and pop to support, you found it!

Love this place. Food is amazing. (Eventhough it's not like a typical hibachi restaurant where it's all cooked in front of you) it's better then most hibachi restaurants taste and quality wise though, the Service is as good as you'd expect for only having 2-3 servers. Very nice staff from what I've seen. Will be back and recommend to anyone. Place looks closed from the outside at night due to the window tint. (I thought it was for the longest time tbh) but when they turn the open sign on at night it's obvious it's not closed.. It's not the most visually appealing on the inside (torn up booths and such) but it's a family owned restaurant (from my understanding) that is kinda hidden in the back. Don't let the old tables and booths deceive you though. This place is amazing. For 2 imperial dinners, an order of cheese wontons and a black widow roll with 1 soda was in the mid $70 range. So it's alittle more pricey for Mooresville But the portions are very generous and delicious.

Decided to try this place out tonight after dropping off a cheesecake order. I was surprised at the speed that our food came out and that's when the wheels fell off. The onion soup and small salad was good. I had the NY steak and shrimp and my Karla had the filet and chicken. My steak was a little over cooked and tough. Shrimp was good. The chicken sauce was good but the chicken was dry. Wife's filet wasn't very tender either. The biggest disappointment of the night was the yum yum sauce. It tasted like ketchup and Mayo mixed and tasted funny. Definitely not what other Japanese restaurants serve. Will not be returning.

We were hesitant when we saw sushi in Mooresville, but this place is top notch. From the calamari to the sushi rolls, everything was amazing. They even had a rice free option for me!

I went here with my friend and her family and it was absolutely amazing! I got tuna sashimi and salmon sashimi and a side of fried rice! I recently came back from Japan and their salmon sashimi was EXTREMELY authentic! Some of the best that I have had since returning! Afterwards we all shared some strawberry ice cream mochi and it was also some of the best that I have had since returning! I don't tend to like strawberry flavored things, but this was amazing! The wait staff is absolutely amazing! They are extremely thoughtful and make sure that your experience is the best that it can possibly be! P.S. if you love yum yum sauce, they've got plenty of it for you to use on your rice, chicken, vegetables, etc!

Took a chance when I saw this place on YELP. I normally will not eat sushi inland, but the reviews were good. The fish was as fresh as I've ever had. I came at an unusual time as I had finished up my work for the day and didn't want to go to my hotel. 15 min drive from the hotel on country roads. I was skeptical, but I am so glad I came and enjoyed. The waitres was very nice and funny, the sushi chef was ver kind and did beautiful artwork with the platter. It's very unassuming, but worth the trip for good sushi.

Very nice place to stop off if you're in town or just looking for something a little different for lunch or dinner. I'm a big fan the owner and workers are very nice. So give it a try. I'm posting better pictures of the menu so you can see what they offer

Ordered a quick lunch to go on my lunch break and it was delicious! I had a bento box. Amazing amount of food for the price. The soup was one of the best soups I've had in a long time from a Japanese restaurant. Amazing broth. Definitely check this place out!

This is a nice family run sushi & hibachi restaurant with reasonable prices. The outside doesn't look very great and it's tucked back hidden from the main road (highway 267) but the food and service are good. This restaurant serves hibachi grilled food, but there's only one and you don't sit there. They cook the food and bring it to your table. If you are looking for a sit at the grill hibachi experience this isn't the place. I'd recommend the family sushi dinner that comes with several rolls, salad and miso soup. Also, the Jalapeño Bomb appetizer is great!

The food is always good here but when you find a hair in your food like my wife did and the only thing "Managment" does is take their hat off and say "all the cooks have short hair" and offer to make more rice. Of course after chewing on a hair the last thing you want to do is put more of the same stuff you found the hair in back in your mouth so my wife declined the offer. Then he just mumbled "sorry" and walked away. He had black hair my wife has black hair. The hair in her food was auburn same color as the servers hair. And of course when the bill came there was no discount. At least they didn't charge us extra for the hair! We also heard other patrons state that A1 had lost its liquor license and could no longer serve. So with little effort to satisfy my wife and no adjustment to the bill it will be a long long time before we give A1 another chance to disappoint us again.

Don't judge a book by it's cover! This place had awesome sushi! The fried rice was decent, but irrelevant because of how good the Tuna Lovers plate was. If you like tuna, get that plate and you'll be happy as can be. Will definitely be back. Great service as well!

Called twice to order carry out. They hung up on me twice. Our order was going to be well over $100 but now I can guarantee you I wont be visiting this place.

Oh my god where do I start... well the family had the filet mignon and shrimp.. tender juicy and so good.. the sashimi appetizer ..killer thin slices of yummy fish .. and I had the Sushi cake... now I have sushi all over world .. but this brings it to a new level of delight... go.. no run to this restaurant and be creative and enjoy

We come here very often but after today, never again. So, to start off, they precook their chicken everyday and set it to the side in metal tins so they don't have to cook the chicken when it's ordered, they just add sauce. Very gross. Today, we ordered the shrimp bento box and NY strip steak hibachi lunch. Our server mistook it as steak and shrimp hibachi lunch. Server never came back around to at least mention that I never ordered the shrimp. We saw him the whole time by the sushi bar on his phone with headphones in. When the bill came, I mentioned that I never ordered the shrimp and he absolutely lost his cool. Was yelling at us telling me I ordered that when I know for a fact that I didn't. I ended up just paying for the incorrect item that I didn't order because all he was doing was yelling especially when I'm assuming the manager/owner? came over to the table, our server was over his shoulder still yelling about the ticket. It truly wasn't a big deal until he started yelling and accusing. If this doesn't change your mind about coming here, I hope the chicken does if you get the guy server and not the lady I truly hope nothings wrong with your order because it will be the end of the world for him lmao.

Another stellar experience at A1 Japanese Steak House earlier tonight. The wife got the filet mignon and chicken combo and I stuck to my California roll and Avocado roll. We complimented our food with plum wine and hot sake! Drink and food delivery were timely and the staff was on point. Always a great stop for us!

This is my first visit here. I was impressed with the sushi lunch which included miso soup and salad and chefs choice of sushi with a California roll. I'll be coming back here for lunch soon. The service was very efficient and the dining area is large and spotless. They have fountain in the middle of the restaurant that is relaxing and unexpected. The location is not visible from the main road but worth looking for.

Hands down some of my favorite sushi ever and hidden away in our small town. They prepare everything with great care from sushi rolls to shashimi and their steak is so tender it's like butter! So glad we decided to try out A1! I suffer from severe shellfish allergy and they are one of my few trusted places to get non shellfish sushi's and not be afraid of having a reaction. We booked them for a large conference dinner one Sunday evening a few years ago and they handled us with great ease! Service was top notch from this local family establishment. Attendees from all over the country were raving about how great the food was!! Filet Mignon is excellently prepared. A1 never disappoints

This was my first time eating at A1. I must say it was a pleasant experience. I ordered the strawberry Japanese soda which was great! The soup and salad were very good as well. I had the chicken and shrimp hibachi with salmon sushi and crunch rolls. It was all so good! Great service all around and I can't wait to go back.
