Where to Find Terrific Thai Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"AAHARN grew out of the mother restaurant, Koon Thai on Convoy, to add locations in Little Italy, University City, and Rancho Penasquitos. Order the heat level at what you can handle but don’t be shy about electrifying your senses. Standout dishes include lemongrass tum yum broth, loaded with sturdy straw and wispy enoki mushrooms, and pad Thai tiger prawn." - Helen I. Hwang

The food was very good. The staff provided great customer service to our family with kids. Loved the Tom Kha Soup, Chicken Satay, and Honey Tangerine Chicken.

Ordered via DoorDash. It arrived fast and was still hot. It's been a while since I had Pad Thai, and it didn't disappoint. It was fresh and had a good flavor profile. The noodles were also cooked just right. It really hit the spot when I was craving Thai noodles. I'll definitely order here again.

Google
Entering the restaurant is as confusing as a restaurant can get. You have to go in through the patio of a bar and then through the lobby of an office building. I went for my 30 min. I highly recommend ordering ahead if you’re in a rush like I was. The hostess took a while to help me with my order. The dining area is very small. I would try to not go with any party larger than 4. The ambiance is a little bit above average. The food is actually very good tho.

Google
make sure to head in through the stone cut brewery and you won’t regret it. the food is delicious but the service and phenomenal smile and friendliness of the staff is why you stay and come back over and over again. what a wonderful treat and experience - make sure to try the duck basil but anything you order will be good i am sure. definitely give them a try!

Was visiting a relative staying at a hotel nearby and this was the closest thai restaurant walking distance. It is located in an office building, but was easy to find with signs around. On the weekend we went it was mostly empty inside. We ordered a chicken satay as a starter. The amount of chicken on each stick was decent and was great as is or with the peanut sauce provided. I ordered the basil chicken with mild spice. I will mention that if sensitive to spice that even mild had quite the kick. I also tried some panang curry (mild) and enjoyed the flavor. Portions were large and we had leftovers for another time. There was only one lady handling the tables, but she checked on us frequently and we had a nice chat with her before we left. Overall thought this was a decent thai place in the area. For parking we used a garage near the hotel and walked a few blocks to the restaurant.

Google
We are in town for a convention, and our hotel was nearby, so we decided to give them a try. I got the Pad See Ew, and my boyfriend got the Pad Thai with mild heat. Both were delicious! Would definitely come back again. Good prices for the amount of food we got!

Google
Casual Thai eatery with fast service. The food is basic and lacks finesse but is fine for a quick lunch. The teriyaki sauce was sweet, and there was an ample amount of chicken. The veggies were perfunctory. Service was nice and prompt.

M P.

Google
Have your curries Thai spicy 🔥! There is a brew pub nextdoor if the heat becomes overwhelming. Situated next to the Santa Fe Depot, this is also a good option for take-away food if you are commuting by train.

Yelp
Jury Duty lunch hour brought me here after reading cooking magazine about soups. Tried the Panang Curry with chicken, spice level 6. Definitely hit the spot for a cozy warm my soul type of meal. The curry broth woke up my taste buds. Coconut milk was a nice balance to calm and add depth of flavor. Served with side of rice that I would alternate bites with. Staff is punctual, service is quick. Dining area we'll lit and secluded enough to focus on meal. Enter through Stone Brewing gate

Yelp
Huge parking lot but might have to park further back since all the gym people park right up front. Pad Thai: got it without bean sprouts and added crispy pork. The pork itself was well flavored but a bit overcooked/dry. Otherwise the noodles were well fried and seasoned Kao soi: a bit of a spicy curry that comes with both dried noodles and ramen-like noodles that soaks up the curry - has quite a strong coconut base but I liked it!

Yelp
The place smells amazing and service is quick. Upon ordering, food also comes out quickly and they do a good job checking in if you need anything. However, the food was only ok. The Tom Kha dish had muted flavors and the Massamam Curry was a bit overwhelming with spices. Not spicy, but more like a holiday cookie flavor. I did order a 4/10 spice, so perhaps if I got spicier the dishes would not have been so sweet.

Yelp
Unfortunately they don't have green curry here which is my favorite. So we opted to order the Pa Nang curry and pad Thai. Food wasn't bad and they gave a large portion. Only one person was working the front so she was keeping herself busy. Ended up having to go up to the counter and pay as she never brought our check. Pretty small place inside. Was a tad warm though during lunch time, wish they turned on the AC.

K. S.

Yelp
We ordered the spring rolls, wagyu boat noodles, and lamb shank. The spring rolls were teeny tiny (definitely not worth the price). I ordered the boat noodles spicy, but I swear it came out with zero spice, and also had very little meat. The lamb shank was the only thing that was quite delicious. The service was fine and the waitress was excellent at keeping our water cups full. Sadly, overall not a place I need to return to.

Yelp
I have eaten here and had take out many times since they opened this location. I have never had a problem and always enjoyed the food. Tonight I ordered the Drunken Noodles with chicken, medium spicy with extra spice on the side. I came back in 15 minutes and received my order and left a tip. I had a 12 minute drive home and the food was still hot when I opened it up to eat. The first thing I noticed was that they did not include the side spice as requested and confirmed by the lady at the register. No big deal. I am fine with their medium spice level. I started to eat and the flavor was good like usual. However, the entire dish was very dry. I'm talking cardboard need water immediately dry. The noodles fell apart like they had been sitting for hours. However, it was only 6PM, 1 hour after they opened. I called them at that point. My intention was to let them know that a usually satisfied customer just had a bad experience and told them how dry the dish was. The only response she gave was an OK. I tried to ask questions and got no answers and then was just hung up on. Not acceptable! I immediately called back but they would not answer. Too bad. I left a detailed message documenting my previous call. I also stated my call was more just to let them know that a previously satisfied customer had a bad meal this time. They clearly did not want any constructive feedback. This is the part that most concerns me. Any place can put out a bad meal from time to time. The true character and customer survive is what we all look for in a restaurant is how you respond to customer feedback and treat your customers. Needless to say they have lost my business and I will no longer refer people there from Stone Brewing across the hall. I have sent dozens of people there over the year. No more.

Yelp
Last night we went to stone brewery and they mentioned that they didn't offer any food, but that we could bring in food from the delicious Thai place next door. My bf was excited as he had smelt the Thai food as we walked into the strip mall and he wanted it. We placed our order at stone and walked over to place a food order. We ordered the crab fried rice and they offered to bring it to our table at stone. They were super nice to also bring us 2 plates to share and 2 sets of utensils. This was the most delicious crab fried rice we have had! It had so much crab meat in it! We will have to be back during our stay here in San Diego. We are curious to try other dishes.

Yelp
Took my coworkers here for a quick lunch and it did not disappoint. The restaurant had some northern Thai food that my colleague craved and I went with my steady pad see ew with soft tofu. The flavor was delicious and everything was great. Parking can be a little hard with street parking only. Besides that, if you want no frill Thai food that is authentic and is reasonable in price, you got to come here. The setting of the restaurant is like a fast food restaurant, nothing fancy. Again, for a quick lunch, they serve you promptly and they make sure you walk out full and happy.

Yelp
I was delighted to find this place not too far from the courthouse (which brought me to a rare visit downtown). It took a little bit too long to have my order taken after immediate seating. I almost left. I ordered the Penang curry. It looked just like the photo on the web site. It had a mixture of carrots, broccoli and chicken; I liked the mixture. The sauce was delicious. I found my new favorite Thai restaurant and wanted to come back to order the Massaman curry and Pad Thai. - or so I thought. After two pukes so far, I'm not so sure... I hadn't, and haven't, eaten anything but the Thai food. I can't eat dinner, I feel #3 coming on. One time thing? Bad luck? Bad sanitation?

Yelp
I recently visited Aaharn, and while it wasn't the best, it wasn't the worst either. I've definitely had more flavorful Thai food elsewhere, but this was decent enough if you're in the area and craving something Thai-inspired. The ambiance is nice--modern, bright, and relaxed. Service is good; but the overall flavor of the food just didn't hit the mark for me. That being said, if you're in the mood for Thai food and looking for a nice casual meal, this place might work for you. It won't blow you away, but it's not a bad option either.
google avatar

Glen T.

Yelp
I ordered phad Thai chicken, massamun curry and fried chicken. Phad Thai tasted like fish sauce, fried chicken had a burnt flavor. The only thing with decent flavor was the curry. HARD NO, don't waste you hard earned $$
google avatar

Mac B.

Yelp
No frills thai cuisine downtown on Kettner. The Pad Thai and Khao Soi were tasty, but the shrimp on the Pad Thai left something to be desired. The lady working there was incredibly friendly and kind and apologized for the wait because we ordered online, but the wait was minimal at best.
google avatar

Jacqueline K.

Yelp
Doesn't taste like Thai food. I got the Pad See Ew and the red curry. The food isn't bad but it's not great. The Pad See Ew had bok choy instead of broccoli and it had a completely different profile taste. Usually Pad See Ew has a soy sauce base but this was different. Maybe more oyster sauce based? I'm not sure what they used. The curry was okay. Most of it went to the trash. Don't get the Thai tea, it was trash. Also the restaurant is inside the building.
google avatar

Darin S.

Yelp
Only 2 employees- cook and server.... If there is more than 6 ppl already in the restaurant- good luck placing an order. The lady wasn't really friendly about the wait so I left after waiting 20 minutes. Too many other options in SD.
google avatar

Yelp
Thai food is one of my favorites and when I saw this restaurant next to Stone Brewing, I knew I had to try it! I walked in and the restaurant was clean, quiet, and smelled amazing from all the food! Since it was just me I was immediately seated and handed menus - that's some fast service! I wanted everything on the menu, but my eyes were drawn to the Kaprow Wagyu. I asked her about the medium spicy level and she stated it was around 5-6 and of course I said yes. My meal came and it looked exactly like the picture, I started mixing everything together and I loved every bite! Thai spiciness is a whole other level of spicy. Every bite had that heat, but it was so delicious! This place was a perfect lunch spot for me!
google avatar

Yasemin M.

Yelp
Not impressed with what I ordered (should of ordered the pad Thai). Tasted like the orange chicken you buy at Trader Joe's. Service and ambience was good.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
Super tasty! I was across the hall at Stone Brewing and while the beer was tasty (and strong), I wanted something simple as I had been traveling. Happy hour is from 4:30-7. I had the Gyoza and glass of white. Choice of wine was Chardonnay or Sauvignon blanc. I said you choose and I ended up with the Sauvignon blanc. Quick. Easy. Attentive service. Being next to the train station it's not touristy at all. Locals, a couple of cops were all in attendance while I quickly noshed. Those that know, know. Seating is limited.
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice. Casual, modern, dangling lights w some plants. There was only 1 person doing everything (register, taking orders, serving, cleaning tables). She was friendly but service was slow when it got crowded. Flavor of food was fine, but we definitely have had better Thai food that was more flavorful. This place is like a fusion of Thai, Chinese, Indian cuisines. They serve lobster, regular broccoli instead of Chinese broccoli for Pad-See-Ew, naan, etc. They also served whole baby carrots in several dishes instead of slicing or shredding them which seemed very weird...almost borderline lazy for not making them smaller. Made us feel like we were animals eating whole carrots...
google avatar

Camille H.

Yelp
This place was annoyingly difficult to find. And then once I finally got to the front counter, they ignored me for quite some time before I was able to pick up my already paid for to-go order. I got the massaman curry which came with rice. They gave me a lot. They apparently don't have the right sized containers so they gave me 2 containers. But the small one didn't have any of the mix-ins (just liquid). The big container tasted good though (for some reason the small one didn't really). I also got a side of naan and it was very disappointing. I love naan but this one was dry and stiff.

Yelp
I ordered the Tom Yum Noodle Soup- my husband picked it up to go. the description is "Rice noodles, shrimp and ground chicken, enriched with a poached onsen egg, and bean sprouts, all in a creamy Tom Yum broth. A sprinkle of crushed peanuts and cilantro adds the finishing." My soup came without any noodles, shrimp, peanuts egg or bean sprouts- just a couple pieces of chicken, onions, and mushrooms. Pretty disappointing.

Yelp
This Thai place is one of my go to spots with my friends. I really like their Pa Nang curry as it has a rich and nutty flavor that complements the veggies and any choice of protein. My friends really like they're stir fry which has a nice balance of sweet, savory, and spice. I'm not the biggest fan of stir fry in general but it was still good. They usually do not have a long wait so the service is super quick! I am surprised more people don't come here. The indoor decorations are nice and simple and have an earthy feeling. Sometimes the portions can be on the smaller side but this place is reasonably priced so it is not a big issue.
google avatar

Janet R.

Yelp
Love their cashew chicken. I get it every time. My husband I go almost weekly. We overheard a flight attendant dining there and talking to the server, while we were there, that she eats there every time she comes to San Diego and that of all the places all over the world, this place was THE BEST Thai she's ever had! We have yet to find any Thai place better!!
google avatar

OC Resident R.

Yelp
This plac is yummy. It's alittle hidden next to the train station and same plaza as a brewery which is also a cool place. Going back to Aaharn, Fonny the lady that helped me is super nice and smily. I ordered pad Thai- chicken which I enjoyed in the coaster and it was yummy Give them a try, you will be happy

Yelp
So I definitely agree that this is an amazing Thai place. I honestly wished we had this in Orlando. So my yellow curry was perfect, a hint of sweetness with spicy, and you can taste the subtle flavors. When reading some reviews I really felt like some patrons may be more used to the American Thai + not fully understand the balance of thai cuisine with vegetables + chicken. Also, I will say that the carrots were cooked to perfection but I wish the potatoes had been left cooking a little bit longer. They weren't hard but they were not soft enough, in my opinion. The staff were wonderful! Parking is on the street or tons of parking garages in the area. I definitely will want to visit this Thai place every time I get to San Diego! One of my fav. Thai places ever!!!! I hope to one day try all the variations of curry + drunken noodle.

Mikki N.

Yelp
Ordered our pad see ew, drunken noodles and chicken satay. Waited for over an hour. Turns out they gave our food to the wrong table. They got free food. We just got a complimentary Thai tea. Like at least offer to comp the meal or half off. An $8 Thai tea is not a fix. They need a better system. I'd gladly go back to the front to get my food with a buzzer. The food itself was eh. The pad see ew didn't even had egg in the dish. The drunken noodles were very dry. The satay was cooked well and soft but lacked flavor. There was no color on the meat. Honestly, I only ate here because it was nearby Stone.
google avatar

Judy Z.

Yelp
Cute place, good service, delicious food. Unfortunately we weren't able to eat all of it because even the mild was way too spicy. Wish they had an option for no spice. :(

Hillary T.

Yelp
Loved this place so much picked up today as my partner is under the weather and it sounded like a perfect remedy. We ordered Yellow Veggie Curry(7), Pa Nang Shrimp Curry(4), Thai Iced Tea (coconut milk), and Sweet Mango Sticky Rice - truly everything was top notch, tasted so fresh, and had perfect heat levels. The mango sticky rice made my heart sing, and honestly, so did the Thai Iced Tea- delicious per usual but the cup was as big as my head!!‍ Something we loved about their takeout experience is the packaging!! Curry was cling wrapped in order to not leak and the Thai Iced Tea comes with a little red heart stopper and is very well sealed so you can shake it while, like me, choosing to wear a white jumpsuit today, and yet magically having no issues! Both curry and tea packaging are reusable/recyclable as well! The woman who served me was so kind and seemed genuinely thrilled to have gotten a tip on a to-go order, so quick reminder to all to TIP ON TAKEOUT! The kitchen is still cooking it, the servers still have to put your order in correctly, get it organized (slower than usual due to being in enclosed cases) in a way that doesn't get mixed up with other orders or spill, remember the utensils/condiments you MIGHT need(which is typically set at your table), and package it up all while taking regular in-house orders. We in the service industry make low wages but (some of us) still put a lot of love into our work, and that's not brushed aside for takeout. Tips make a difference, not only because you're already budgeting to eat out, even $2 is kinder than nothing, but also because it changes the moral in the workplace. Your work is felt appreciated. Point blank period, end of rant. Love y'all, will be back!

Yelp
Some of the best Thai food I've ever had. You won't be disappointed. Go with the specials and recommended dishes.
google avatar

Paige B.

Yelp
The presentation was lovely and the vibe inside was clean and modern. I enjoyed the curry, but the noodles were a bit overcooked and the spice level was inconsistent. Service was polite, but our food took longer than expected. Decent spot, but didn't fully hit the mark for me.
google avatar

Marcia M.

Yelp
Delicious!! The lamb shank was amazing. If you're looking for a good Thai food, this is a place to go.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Aaharn is such a hidden gem! The food here is so delicious and packed with flavor. My go-to favorites are the Chili Gyoza, the Pad Thai, and the Garlic Edamame. Always hits the spot.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
The food is absolutely excellent. Panang curry was just spicy enough. Other items all excellent. Service was efficient and accommodating. Ambience spartan but acceptable. You must try this place if you like Thai.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the shrimp pad tai. I was happy I can order and pay online and pick it up. No wait when I get there.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying the food here. We ordered delivery for PadThai, Masammun curry, Spicy Basil chicken, Pad Kee mao (Drunken noodle) and mango sticky rice. Spice level mild. Delivery time is good. As for the food: The Mango sticky is interesting. If I'm not mistaken there's some black glutinous rice mixed in it giving it a special taste and texture. Pad Thai is good. Drunken noodle is ok not too oily - I wish the noodles were coated evenly with seasonings. Chicken Basil and massamum curry is ok. Portion is good too. Would order again when we next come here.
google avatar

Athina R.

Yelp
Ordered the drunken noodle over phone. Estimated wait time was 15-20 minutes but got my food in around 10. Extremely fast service. This place is a little pricey but there aren't many Thai restaurants within walking distance. Drunken noodle was on the drier side but had some good flavors and satisfied my craving. Option for different spice levels; I ordered level 1 because I have no spice tolerance whatsoever. Highest level is level 10. Plenty of seating available and they can accommodate for large parties. Saw a group of 8-10 people seated inside. Tip: Go around the side of the building (On B St) and enter through Stone Gate. This is the only entrance.

Yelp
We had a hankering for Thai food and decided to try Aaharn! It's located in a plaza connected to Stone brewing's patio. It seems that you can take the food out to the patio to eat while enjoying a beer from Stone! The restaurant was small but so clean and inviting. The waitress was kind and patient while I decided on the spice level. I'm always a bit hesitant with spice level at Thai restaurants, Thai spice is a different level! In terms of food, we ordered: (1) Massaman Lamb Shank - They labeled this dish as MUST TRY, and boy do I agree with that statement. Wow the lamb was fall off the bone tender. The curry was a great balance of savory and sweet. And the curry also had nice variety of veggies (i.e. squash, beans, carrots, tomatoes)! (2) Basil Duck - The sauce for the duck dish is exactly my taste, lots of umami flavor with a little kick of spice. Again it was cooked with a lovely variety of veggies. The duck was a bit dry but I still enjoyed it dunked in that beautiful sauce.
google avatar

Ruddigger J.

Yelp
The food is good. I've tried several items now, and they've all been great. They actually make it spicy when you ask them to, which is a huge plus. And they have Khao Soi, which is such a great dish but rarely seen at most Thai restaurants.
google avatar

Chrissy J.

Yelp
The food is very tasty but what I didn't like is the waitress lady who is asking the host, made you order food on a digital pad, then you need to pay and tip her. I tipped her good and still she gave us no drinks, plastics utensils and paper plates. I want my tip back! Unbelievable how unhappy that lady was. The owners need to find someone else.

Chelsea B.

Yelp
This place is wonderful!! the food is always 10/10 and the service is amazing! I've tried quite a few different plates and have brought so many friends here and they've never been disappointed. Plus, there's a parking garage for the building right outside, so parking isnt an issue!

Michael M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious Thai food. I'm returning frequently. Very handsome dining room too and in a relatively quiet area of south Little Italy.
google avatar

Karri H.

Yelp
tucked on the lower level of a loft complex and next to a Stone Brewing tasting room. The food is great and the heat index can be scaled per order and entree' for those that love flavor but not wanting a volcanic spice level. The servings are more than generous - left overs or great to split - a tremendous value. Attentive service.
google avatar

Riley I.

Yelp
The location is nice and has great vibes. Outdoor seating is peaceful and chill. Right next to a beer place. The food all tastes amazing.

Yelp
Auntie Linh (or Lyn), you've an absolute gem and AAHARN by Koon Thai is very blessed to have you. From start to finish, you made me feel like family, checked on me frequently, and just made me incredibly welcomed at the restaurant. I stumbled upon AAHARN by Koon Thai after a massive craving for some Thai food, and let's just say, AAHARN delivered. They delivered hard. The prices are a bit high, but you get an insanely generous portion. Plus, it's a Thai restaurant in Little Italy. I wasn't one bit surprised. My favorite dish of the evening was the Galangal Coconut Broth. Best. Freaking. Soup. Ever. I enjoyed this more than my entree. I could have this soup for days, if not weeks. Well seasoned. Well cooked. The toppings and meat were all fresh. I'm legit salivating thinking about this. If you're looking for an addition to your meal, and don't want to settle for a cliche appetizer, I strongly encourage adding this dish to your order. My entree of the evening was the Pad Thai Tiger Prawn. The noodles definitely reminded me of my time in Bangkok. Each ingredient was well-prepared, including the ground peanuts that had an alluring authentic taste and aroma. I was a bit so-so on the tiger prawns, as they were a tad bit smaller than I'm typically used to. They were also grilled, and you can smell the smoke and fumes in each and every bite. Again, I think it didn't add too much for me. Overall, the pad thai was decent, not the best I've had, but with the generous portions, I'd definitely consider ordering this again. Thank you, AAHARN by Koon Thai for such a lovely evening. Y'all are a great addition to the Little Italy community, and I can't wait to try some of your Auntie Linh (or Lyn), I'll see you again soon! I'm already referring my friends to this place!

Yelp
Service was quick, the food hearty and delicious. The spicy level was dialed up, I shed a few tears but it was worth it

Mikel K.

Yelp
Our party of 6 had dinner at Aaharn last evening and everyone loved the food and service! We ordered the dumplings (2 orders, one spicy and one regular) for appetizers; they were delicious! We had various entrees including Pa Nang Curry, Pad Thai, and Red Curry; all met and exceeded our expectations! Our server was Pita; she was an excellent host and server! We'll be back!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Great service. Clean and modern Thai fusion cuisine. The curry noodle was unique and had a pleasant spicy lemon grass flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Good Thai place near my house. Definitely a good option if you're in the mood for Thai. The food quality was good and the service was also good as well. I will be coming back here for their chicken drunken noodle

Yelp
We've been getting delivery or takeaway more often because of the public health problems of late. What better type of food for delivery on a rainy and cloudy day than Thai food?! I did appreciate how neatly the food was packaged and labeled upon receiving it from the DoorDash delivery person. What I did not enjoy was how bland the food was. I think the best part of the meal was the salad (no dressing given in the delivery) because the romaine lettuce was nice and crisp. The ginger soup did taste like ginger, but for some reason, it had no bite to it. I felt as if there was a bit of tomato juice in the broth that dulled the flavor? The seafood quinoa curry seemed like an interesting type of curry not seen on many Thai restaurant menus. Unfortunately, expectations were not met. The curry flavor was okay. I appreciated that the dish was not too full of quinoa because I am not the hugest fan of the grain. Decent sized chunks of seafood were in the curry. Sad to say, this was an unremarkable Thai food takeway experience.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients and tasty food! Just know that their spice levels can be misleading for newbies. I ordered Tom Yum with seafood. Mussels, fish and shrimp, all cooked perfectly, but I chose "mild" and was at my gringo limits! Sweating, with tears flowing. I ate and managed to enjoy it, but would try very mild or even no spice next time. I can always add chili oil ;) Only four stars because the soup had too much coarse chopped fresh onion, about 1/2C in a pint of broth. Nearby diners agreed about heat, saying they got medium spicy the first time and couldn't eat it! So, hot Thai lovers...you won't be disappointed. Stone Brewing next door allows their food and has a super nice patio area.
