Where to Try New England's Most Famous Bread Traditions

"This Salem bakery is noted as one of the spots still making anadama bread and is recommended for Parker House–style rolls; the bakery stone-mills its grains in-house, an approach highlighted by Suzy Sapir of Hippy Pilgrim when she recommends their rolls." - Adam H. Callaghan

Greater Boston’s Best Bread Bakeries | Eater Boston

"Garlic sourdough, anadama pan loaves, brioche, and more — North Shore favorite A&J King bakes it all, not to mention pretty pastries, tarts, and other treats. Founders Jackie and Andy King trained with the bread experts at Standard Baking Co. in Portland, Maine, before opening their own Salem spot in 2006; they’ve since expanded to a second location and distribute bread throughout the North Shore and Greater Boston." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Delicious latte, sticky bun, chicken salad sandwich, chai latte + brownie & cookie. Loved the atmosphere- very relaxed. Enjoyed the service as everyone was kind and smiled. Can’t wait to visit again!

We’re new to the area and have been enjoying establishing our morning coffee, breakfast, and walk routines. Both A&J locations have been standout favorites — the food and drinks are excellent! The only challenge we’ve encountered is that dogs aren’t allowed inside, even just to step in briefly for a to-go order. We completely understand and respect the health regulations around that. However, neither location currently has a safe spot outside to tie a leash while placing or picking up an order. We’ve noticed the water bowl by the door, which is a nice touch and suggests a dog-friendly spirit — but it’s usually empty and full of dried dirt, so likely not getting much use. We’d love to suggest a small improvement: adding a designated, safe tie-up spot near the entrance. It would make a huge difference for dog owners like us and turn AJ into a truly perfect stop on our morning routine. Thanks so much for considering!

Excellent artisanal bakery. Two locations in Salem. The baguettes, sweet rolls, and English muffin bread are a must-try.

North-shore staple - we usually hit their spot in Salem, but this one has a little more convenient parking. Absolutely amazing breads and treats - and croissants on par with a Parisian bakery.

Good pastries and quite a bit of variety. The chai lattes are a bit weak but they serve other hot beverages as well.

It's our job to make sure their employees are paid fairly? Uh no. Your corporate greed doesn't excuse us paying extra to compensate your employees. That's your job, not ours.

This location on Boston st is not the same as the one downtown - it is confusing because some folks have uploaded pictures of the center st one by mistake. This location has the yummy bread, coffee, and pastries but no seating, the hours are different, and no hot food options like the paninis, sandwiches, etc. Parking is much easier. Come here if you want to buy the bread, go to the other location if you want the cafe experience and hang out.

Having read a recent review in the newspaper, went in for pastries and coffee. Nothing bad but not up there with fare from the best bakeries, like Clear Flour or Iggy's

Yelp
We came across this bakery on our way to the airport, as we were looking for one last breakfast to wake ourselves up! The service was amazing but the meal was average. They certainly have a great selection of products to choose from, but my cheese bread was stale and didn't taste too appetizing. I will say the store smells amazing inside, but I feel we might have received day old products. If I'm ever in town again, I'll be giving this place another go to see if it exceeds my expectations.

Yelp
Was super stoked to check out this bakery (note it has two locations). Hubs did not love his almond croissant but my orange blossom and pistachio danish was out of this world!! The plum danish was a bit too sweet for me, but I would eat that pistachio one any day. Worth checking out. Their breads looked great, I would want to try them as well.

Yelp
So many choices!! Freshly made, you really can't go wrong with any of the choices. I got a savory, loaded garlic pesto croissant. OMG. I could have eaten 5 of those, it was delicious!! In the festive mood, they had pumpkin brown butter cakes and even pumpkin spice lattes. I grabbed the last pumpkin brown butter cake and also was curious about the Sticky Bun latte. Everything was delicious and I wish I could come here every morning. Carbs on carbs on carbs, but well worth it. Stop by if you're in the area to jump start your morning. Wish I grabbed that garlic sourdough for later. Don't make the same mistake I did!

Yelp
I get coffee at the Boston street location. Service is good but the coffee can be hit or Miss. As their second location it sure needs attention in decor, a table or two. Some simple additions to the menu would be nice. Egg sandwich? Simple things. Staff is friendly so I will continue going there

Yelp
It was a rough day, so my wife and I stopped for some coffee and pastries. We had been wanting to try this bakery, and we were glad we did. There was this pesto, grape tomato, and I think feta cheese danish that was wicked good. I prefer savory over sweet. My wife got un pain au chocolat, she really enjoyed it and gave me a piece (yeah, pretty freakin awesome!) to try. The coffee my wife got was a flavorful fall-flavored coffee that reminded me of grandma's. I forget the name and will update on my next visit. It being a warm day, the iced mocha cappuccino was the perfect option.

Yelp
Was on our way this morning to the downtown Salem location when I spotted this on the way. Was so happy that They opened another location closer to the house. This is gonna be very dangerous to our waist line. We always get 2-4 kouign amann which is like sugar baked into a croissant. Those layers of flaky buttery pastry mixed with layers of caramelized sugar. To die for!! This is always a must for us Everything is amazing here and have yet to have a bad experience.

Yelp
This is a lovely little spot for a coffee and a snack. The prices are a bit high so be prepared to fork over 8$ for a coffee and a pastry. Also there is very limited seating so don't plan on a long stay. On the other hand they get very good coffee from CBD and the French style pastries can not be beat.

Yelp
Great little bake shop. Pastries were delicious and coffee was spot on. Good place to start your day, with friendly service and tasty food. Would recommend for anyone in the area.

Yelp
Always nice to pop in and get a warm latte. Their pastries are also so yummy. Staff are extremely welcoming and friendly, it's like a little community.

Yelp
Visiting my sister in Salem with her new baby, so we went on a walk to A&J to get some fun coffee drinks. Cool vibe inside. They sell pastries, a variety of types of bread, and different coffees. I got the "Sticky Bun Latte with 1/4 of the sweetener (No matter where I go I get way less of the "pumps" of flavoring on any flavored drink). It was yummy. The guy & gal working were very friendly & laid back. The presentation of the drink was nice looking. Fun little place I'll definitely be back to.

Yelp
Just GO THERE for the best pastry in Peabody..what a great addition. Right on the Salem border. Has parking. Sister store in Salem also great. Eat in or to go....

Yelp
We are well into our Vahlrona Chocolate cream pie we special ordered for Christmas and I'm sure if you tell us how you pulled off that crust that stays flaky and crispy, you'd have to shoot me, so I'll just continue to get them from you. Not too often, though. Good stuff!

Yelp
First time at any of the A&J King. Ordered the Goat Cheese and Scallion Scone. I'm not a scone person but this is a scone like never before. It was light and butter. Oh so good. I wanted another one immediately after finishing. The store was clean and the front counter person was friendly. They didn't have much of a variety at noonish which was disappoint but I'll try them again earlier in the day.
