The People Feeding the Southern Oregon Black Renaissance | Eater Portland

"At A&R BBQ, owner Al Daniels — a 20-year Rogue Valley resident — described how the Food Truck Friday recognition felt unprecedented after 12 years in business: he said it was the first time he’d experienced this kind of acknowledgement of Black-owned businesses in the region, recalled feeling like they were “on the Food Network,” and emphasized how BASE has created solidarity (“We’re in our own worlds out here… Now we’ve got a little group, a little backing, a little familiarity”), a support that he and others say has given them a ‘‘masterclass’’ and tougher skin to weather the pandemic and wildfire challenges." - Bruce Poinsette

I think I'm just used to Midwest bbq, which is why I wasn't a huge fan of this bbq flavor. It was a very sweet flavor, and like a few other reviews said, the meat was drowning in sauce. The service was great and the staff was really friendly ! I just don't think this style is my preference. The seasoned fries were delicious though !

This is that Mom & Pop shop everybody comes and gets their grubbin’. Ordered more than three times here but never went to the joint! I love their Brisket Sandwich with Slaw. This place is not fancy, the craft is in their food! Great group of people producing great food!!! This is a Valdi approved joint!

I don’t normally submit bad reviews. I placed an order online at 4:50. I arrived at the restaurant at 5:15! I was directed to the Door dash pickup area. The estimated pick up time was around 5:30. Over 25 people- walk in & door dash orders received their food before me. At 5:45 I asked about my order. It is now 6 & I asked for a refund. I’ve placed orders before, with no problems. They weren’t extremely busy, so what was the issue. I have supported this busy for over 20 years. The clerks were apologetic, but it does not make sense. She attempted to explain that a large order came in, but as I stated before at least 20 walk in customer received their food.

This food is no longer of the quality that it once was. I will not be returning. I ordered smoke sausage. It was cold. It had no char on it and appeared and tasted like it was barely cooked. I returned and exchanged it for a small chopped shoulder sandwich. I wish I could post the picture to show how little meat was on it. I will not waste my time and money at Hickory Hill location again. This was so disappointing. My mouth was ready for a good meal.

I’ve ordered here now for about a year, and usually between noon and 16:00, there is much to be desired here, and I’m sure a change in management or enforcing of SOPs would really shape up this location. I can only account for the ribs here, as my usual order is a half slab or full slab mild with a pecan pie. I do not believe they remove the membrane from the ribs, if you care about that sort of thing. I’ve seen some say that their bbq is slathered with sauce; I’ve not had an overbearing amount of sauce, and I will say that it’s usually coated with just enough sauce. Pecan pie is pecan pie. The service and atmosphere here has very seldomly risen to the bar of bare minimum. You’d hardly ever hear a greeting when you enter. Most recently, 09/06/2025, I stopped by and ordered my usual via the new mobile app. While the app notifies you that your order is ready, there could be human error in actual expedition. A staff member asked me for my order name, then disappeared into the back. About 5 mins later I had to repeat this process and was then given my order by another member of staff on the phone with very much a “here, damn” attitude. Very often, if you attempt to call in an order, you have a high chance of being greeted with “A&R BBQ hold please”. Photos are incoming.

Rib tips had mostly fat, got a pond & a half. Sauce is great, potato salad & spaghetti was good. Thinly sliced fatty rib tips messed up my experience. Waited at online pickup too long for no one to come finally going to regular counter.

I think Mississippi and Memphis have different ideas about BBQ. We season our meat in Mississippi. DineIn Experience: The ribs were tender and tough. They had too much bark on them, which made the top layer of meat tough to eat. Under the bark was tender meat. I asked for sauce on the side because I like to taste the flavors of the meat but I definitely had to dip the tender meat in the sauce. The sauce is good. The baked beans were straight out of the can. I'm sure the okra is prebreaded and came in a bag but it was good. The caramel cake was the best part of the meal. It was buttery and moist. Someone took their time to make that caramel too. The staff was courteous and seemed to have friendly relationships with the regulars. The wait time for food is fairly quick. The establishment was clean. There is Memphis related memorabilia on the wall but it's not overbearing - nice touch. I heard a lady say her mom sent her across town just for their cole slaw so I may give them another try. I think I'll probably order a smoked or polish sausage instead of the ribs.
