Opening Restaurants Takes You to Deep, Dark Places | Eater Boston

"A large warehouse-style auction house the author enjoys visiting to hunt for previously loved restaurant equipment — likened to a 'giant graveyard' where old restaurant hopes are reborn — and a place to find useful cast-offs (the author spotted a nice cheese melter), though there is hesitation about adding items that could trigger expensive change orders." - Eater

Unresponsive and Unprofessional Experience: I contacted Abell Auctions over a week ago regarding a consignment. While I did receive an initial estimate, all communication stopped after that. I’ve followed up multiple times with no response from anyone on the team. For a business that claims to value consignments, the lack of follow-through and basic courtesy has been incredibly disappointing. It feels like my enquiry was completely ignored. This experience has shown a clear lack of professionalism and accountability. If you’re looking for a responsive and service-oriented auction house, I’d recommend looking elsewhere

I had some items I wanted to sell, one one of them an original acrylic on canvas by Janet Forrester. I have consigned items with other auction houses, Bonhams being one of them. And I have sold collectibles, antiques through ebay as well. I have a lot experience in this field and did a lot of research before consigning my items with Abell Auction. Now that my items have sold, I am very happy with my decision to consign my items with them and will do so again. All my items sold for a good price, their consignment costs are lower than most of their competition, definitely cheaper than ebay. Their auctions have great visibility on the market place. And staff are very helpful and patient. I had one small hiccup with one item, as it its auction was delayed and they were proactive fixed the error and if they had not informed , me i would have been none the wiser. Choosing them is one of my better decsions I have made in awhile.

I have been buying with Abell Auction for several years, they continually have great items at their auctions. This is a great place to find interesting and great collectibles! Keep it up. Blake

Google
Huge disappointment. The picture of the table I bid on was totally misleading. The piece itself was not fit to use ("carving" was actually printed design on peeling paper) and I had to pay for it to be carted away as junk. Auction house does not respond/explain. Will not bid again.

Although I'm a repeat customer, I'm now compelled to share my experience and let any new Abell customer know about the professional, personal and attentive service I've received from the Abell team. Starting from the attendant that takes my call to the warehouse person that find and hand-deliver my item. On one occasion, I was introduced to Sean for assistance and once again, he exceeded my expectation. I'm never short of sharing my Abell service experience with anyone that's interested in working with a top-tier auction operation. Keep up the excellent work Sean and team!

Google
I had an incredible experience with Abell while selling a loved one’s furnishings. From the very beginning, their team went above and beyond to guide me through the entire process with professionalism and care. They made the situation easy and stress-free, handling every detail with expertise and compassion. Their communication was excellent, keeping me informed every step of the way. I was thrilled with the outcome as all items were a sold. I highly recommend Abell for anyone looking for a trustworthy and dedicated partner in selling valuable items.

Google
Everything went great with my very recent purchase of a Bose 3000 CD sound system, smooth transaction and pick up. I have bought various art and antiques at Abells at least since when I bought my first Mercedes there (a 1969 280S see photo) in 1989 (estate of original owner in Bel Air) when they were located on West Adams, which I mention so that people can follow them and buy with confidence in general and also keep an eye out because I believe their live auctions will return and they are a lot of fun - you may go to bid on one thing and end up discovering something else. Everyone is very nice and it is fun to be in contact with people who are the grandchildren of the people I dealt with "back in the day".

Google
I tried to participate in an auction on 2/06/25. Registered for an account on Abell just fine. Tried to register for an auction & was rebuked with an error message on the web page. Tried to enter a bid, kept getting a message to "enter a valid address" (hello, I do know my billing address & delivery address). Didn't make any difference using a different type of credit card. Called for assistance & was "assisted" by a very rude woman who made it very clear she was NOT "IT" & could not provide me with their phone number. She told me I needed to clear my cookies (nope) use a different browser (neither Edge or Chrome got past the error messages) was told to go "incognito" (nope again) & try using my phone. So... tried laptop, desktop pc, 2 cell phones. Came to the conclusion that this auction house is basically messed up. Offered to place bid with a live agent & was told that if I wasn't registered to bid on the auction, I wasn't going to be registered in their system & they could not assist with a bid over the phone. So the short of this is the item I was interested in was sold as I was trying to finalize a registration. Now I understand WHY several items before it sold for such a great bargain price. If you are considering selling with this outfit, beware, your audience will be limited by the same inability to gain access I encountered combined with rudeness when trying to reach out for help... I'm sorry for the owners of the music boxes auctioned off, they could have gone higher if I had just been able to bid in one manner or another.

Yelp
I was very pleased with my experience working with ABELL Auction Company as a first time seller. I found my agent to be not only fair & honest, but also very knowledgeable and straightforward in walking me through the whole selling process. I appreciated the personal attention received. Overall, their services & results exceeded my expectations!

Yelp
Selling fakes. I got an item and researched all the description stated on it. Was surprised that all details on it does was never related or connected to the item. Theyre mixing some fakes in there and unfortunately i got one

Yelp
A Seller you can trust and rely on. The best selection of any California auction house. Buy with confidence. 5-STARS.

Yelp
I called twice about an appraisal for a very large (100+ piece) silver antique tea set. Never got a call back. This is my second negative experience with this company, having had a similar experience trying to get a call back after their rep did come to see some antique a couple of years ago. Like pulling teeth to get any responsiveness. Just profoundly poor followup; they sure don't act like they are interested in new business. My advice: find someone who can return a call.

Yelp
I love this Auction House! There are so many beautiful things that roll through here. Including A Rolls Royce! Jewelry is pricy but unique. BUT I REALLY MISS LAUREN! She was the BEST!

Yelp
Such a delight to peruse the endless displays of art, furniture, doo-dads, and everything in-between. No more in-person bidding, all Online and be ready to bid up for your most desirable pieces as competition definitely is high here, as there are many rarities from highly sought after artists. Fun to just come and explore; it's a free museum to just explore. Oldest and longest functioning auction house in California, btw, located in commerce where casinos and outlets also live!

Yelp
A large international auction house in Beverly Hills gave me an estimated of $20,000.00 for an original Frank Sinatra painting that was a gift to Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme. Abell's sold it for over $60,000.00. The seller's fees are less, the referral fees are higher, and customer service is exceptional. They are very knowledgeable.

Yelp
After decades of loyalty to Abell Auction House, sourcing countless mid-century modern pieces for my personal and professional staging projects, I am deeply disappointed to share my recent experience. When I decided to clear out items from two homes, starting with a townhome full of valuable furnishings, the process became unexpectedly arduous. Despite providing a detailed inventory for a quote--some individual items which Abell had recently auctioned for over $20k--I was met with silence. Initially directed to a generic email and then to Sean Abell directly, my efforts seemed to vanish into thin air. After persistent emails and multiple calls, I finally reached Sean, who offhandedly mentioned my list might have been caught in spam. He promised a response the next day, but none came. With deadlines looming over a month since first contact, I reached out again several times by phone and email, only to be ignored. Ultimately I moved on to another auction house that valued my business, meaning Abell missed out on even being informed about the more valuable items from the second home. Their lack of professionalism towards a long-standing client is not only shocking but utterly inexcusable. I can confidently say that I will no longer engage with Abell, neither as a seller nor a bidder. Sometimes, a multi-generational legacy doesn't imply quality, especially when the current custodians are completely indifferent. P.S. The last time I visited, the disregard they showed for handling antiques was appalling; pieces were carelessly piled on top of each other with no protection, furniture legs were sitting on and poking into upholstery etc. If items didn't arrive damaged, they're certainly going to be leaving that way!

Yelp
Great place to buy very unique items. I keep an eye out for every auction. Best kept secret in LA.

Yelp
So helpful following large furniture purchase through LiveAuctioneers. Very efficient process, super friendly staff. The loading dock guy put all this heavy furniture into my pick-up and gave me great tips for a safe drive home. I was so grateful for their assistance because I was a newbie with them and all alone and had no idea when I went there what to expect. But the auction items were clean, near the loading dock and ready to roll with friendly staff at every turn. They also kept me informed by email before pick-up following the auction - so their decades of experience really show. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Our neighbor in the Palisades recommended Abell. We started with rugs and we've now sold our Warhol, jewelry and other modern art with Abell. The prices and service we received were spectacular. We appreciated the fact they helped us with things that other auctions claimed "were not for them" . As we learned there is a reason they have been in business for a century.

Yelp
the best auction house great finds not to much junk.... its fun just to browse from very expensive to less expensive pieces

Yelp
I have worked with them both buying and selling. They have always been professional and and friendly. They have been doing this for many years, they know what sells and at what price. You can trust them. Sometimes we have our own idea of what our thing are worth, and in auction biz... it's what it's worth that day. I have had what I thought was a $300 item sell for $9000! And items I put a reserve on that didn't sell. Love dealing with Abell Family

Yelp
I am not a prolific Yelp reviewer. Nor do I give praise lightly. Abell Auction Company has earned both. A full 5 stars. I have been an antiques dealer for 25 years, and have bought, and sold merchandise through their house during that time. I have found them to be fair, honest, accommodating, and straightforward, with both integrity and efficiency throughout the process, whether on the buying or selling end of the transaction. The facilities, valet parking and merchandise are all more than adequate, but it is the staff, including the owners, who make the whole thing work...excell actually. I've seen three generations come, and go at Abell. The facelifts and improvements made over the last 6 or 7 years are great. Online bidding is now available for their quarterly auctions. Office, and restroom facilities now are spiffy. But even though the place LOOKS great, it's the respect, personal attention to detail and warmth that I feel when I go there that sets them apart. THIS has been handed down from each generation to the next, and over a period of 100 plus years! So...I've said it. I am thrilled with A. N. Abell Auction Company. They've made my business possible, especially in the early years, and I am thankful. More than that however, they have made it possible for me to persevere in a challenging career, one which I love. Yes, this is sappy. For those who know me, they realize that for me to give a glowing review such as this, Abell must be something special. It/they are.

Yelp
With the majority of the reviews for this auction house being positive, I feel like the unluckiest man alive after my experiences here. I participated in several auctions via LiveAuctioneers, and based my bids on the accuracy of the photographs and condition reports. In one instance, I was alarmed to discover that the antique table I had recently won had extensive undisclosed damage. Reviewing the photographs of the lot after the auction, it soon became clear why there were no pictures posted of the table's left side: the table had been extensively damaged at some point in its life, and amateurishly repaired. Naturally, had the auction house disclosed this information, the bidding wouldn't have been quite as intense for the table. On another occasion, I chose to bid on an antique cabinet with a glass front. Again, the auction photographs didn't accurately depict the true state of the cabinet, and it was only my shipper who brought it to my attention. On collecting the cabinet, my shipper noted a crack in the glass. Abell told my shipper that I had been informed of the crack in the glass. This is simply not the case. On close inspection of the auction photograph, it is obvious that the damage to the glass had been obscured by cloning the image. As with the damaged table, the bids wouldn't have been quite as high if the damage had been disclosed beforehand. My last experience with Abell was when I purchased a Persian rug at a recent auction. After the other two incidents, should I really have been surprised to discover more undisclosed damage? When the rug arrived I was horrified to see that it had some rather obvious moth damage in its border, and some extensive staining, neither of which can be seen in the auction's photographs, but is extremely obvious in person. All three items that I've purchased from Abell were damaged, and in all instances, none of these deficiencies had been disclosed beforehand. Not cool. Not returning.

Susan V.

Yelp
I am so disappointed with Abell Auction Company. They asked me to send photos of the estate items for possible auctions, which I did. This was not a small task for me as I just lost a parent. I did not hear back from them, even though I left a voicemail message to let me know, one way or another, if they had any interest. Nothing. This is not the way to do business. Luckily, another notable auction company is very interested in the estate items and are treating me with courtesy.

Yelp
Complete waste of my time. I needed to interview auction/estate companies for my family. I don't live in the area so I had to plan ahead and make sure I could interview a few companies. I chose Abell as one of them because of the reviews. Joe came to the property for an onsite inspection and it only took 20 minutes. He did not spend much time explaining to me what the market was like for the items we had in our home (antiques, art, furniture, etc) and if it would be something they could sell. At the end of the meeting, he said he'd email me with a proposal for the project. That was back in early December 2017. To this day, he has never emailed nor called me. I get that he went on vacation for a few weeks, but not even a single person from the company followed up to see how the meeting went and what they could do to help me. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
Only given 3 reviews on Yelp. 2 complimentary. And one not complimentary for Abell's Auctioneers Ironically latter was previously removed due to pressure from Abell's to remove asserting I did not have personal experience with them. Could not be further from the truth as I own half the house they entered & they created a disgusting , destructive and violent scene in a home that belonged to my parents for 65 years. If an auction house comes in to a home that is HALF OWNED BY ANOTHER HEIR, AND DOES THE DESTRUCTION AND "TOSSING" OF THE HOME THEY DID, I CERTAINLY HAVE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. And given Abell's was most likely not notified that the remaining contents belonged to me, Yep, I definitely have personal experience w/ Abell's to satisfy the Yelp If Abell's is going to enter into a home to do estate haul, they should know who who exactly owns the home In my case, what I detailed here, if not removed by Yelp, there are no less than 7 attorneys & the courts that can attest to my ownership of the home that Abell's entered, wreak havoc & destruction - my parents' home that I legally own half The condition of the home that remained, & the remaining items all belonged to me. So again, I do have personal experience w/ Abell's to have this review not removed as I do have personal experience & first hand " experience . I think crawling on my hands and knees to sift thru the piles of emptied drawers they left and contents scattered throughout the entire house in rooms the contents did not come from , yes, entitles me to write this review. Abell's bread & butter is estate sales. But exactly who owns the home is definitely unchartered waters for Abell's because thinking that whoever hires them gives them the right to toss a home that half belonged to me is abhorrent as well as gives me every right to claim personal experience w/ Abell's Would you want whoever you co owned a family home with , to hire someone who intentionally ransacked the home. ? And then have Abell's claim you did not have personal experience. Is that a joke? The piles of trash they left mixed in with family heirlooms they had no care for has been incredulous. My Grandparents wedding band from 1919 was tossed into a pile of pennies. Photographs strewn everywhere. Given we had our own Estate consultant / expert he was aware to not leave one penny unturned. Everything was sifted thru meticulously. And ironically, Abell's missed collectibles that they could have auctioned but had no idea what they were looking at. Successor Trustees / Fiduciaries/ Heirs find Abell's as a quick fix to clear a house without lifting a finger . But the cost to not lifting a finger is great - not only is yur family home trashed but our consultants believe from their vast experience, most do not receive a check that after their items auctioned off to jump for joy for. Anyone that has an estate to dispose of whether large or small , whether of great value or not , whether in a neighborhood mid Wilshire / Miracle Mile as ours or any neighborhood, do not think Abell's is the place yur family or loved ones estate, contents of family home will be treated with respect and dignity. Anything but. Granted cleaning out a family home is a messy job & order can quickly dissipate when there is pressure to complete BUT to intentionally take no care in disposing of a home when a well established auction house was called in to do a routine clean out & this is their job & takes ZERO care of the contents that are remaining & only leaves the house in a condition that repulses one is unconscionable. It was the most disgusting , violating , distasteful , horrific displaying of a work ethic. Stomach turning! . To close a chapter of yur family by hiring Abell's to auction off yur families content of a home that was well maintained and always treated with decency and filled with 65 years of memories , is a horrid mistake . After Abell's left the "job" that other heir hired them for, home was no longer a home but a smash and grab scene! Entire house ransacked. It's inconceivable to think what they took for "no reserve lot sales" could not include items broken due to manner in which contents were just tossed every which way! A dinning room table cloth was lifted like a knap sack with a huge Chinese platter on the table & candle sticks & just tossed in bundle on floor. Items that were broken that had tops / lids, were thrown with such force that tops were off. Even the blue latex gloves Abell 's crew used were discarded thruout the home Huge green house in back yard turned upside down - more work to do than sliding over Crowning glory - toilets not flushed Whether yu cared for yur loved ones or not , had good relationships w/ ur loved ones or not, Abell's is not the place to trust w/ yur estate as there isn't a shred of respect your family's legacy Pay heed to others who have sold thru Abell's ...

Yelp
Whenever I have any furniture item that I believe may have some value the Abell Auction Company is the first one that I call. I know that even if they don't find that they can add it to their auction items they will make alternative suggestions and will do it in a timely and mannerly way. I've dealt with them for years, was acquainted with the principal David Abell, and trust them to tell me their truth as a well-established member of the auction scene in Los Angeles.

Lance A.

Yelp
The best we've used... Hired them 3 times to help w/ relatives possessions.

Yelp
Absolutely loved working with Abell Auctions. We fell in love with the variety of items they had and were thrilled with the quality. Their customer service department were extremely helpful, very quick to get back to us. We look forward to working with them again.

Yelp
We had an outstanding experience with Abell Auction. The items are truly extraordinary and exactly as pictured/described. Very easy to work with and their customer support team was super responsive and helpful with our questions. We're already planning on their next auction. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This company was founded in 1916. They wouldn't be in business that long if they weren't the best. Their staff is top notch, they know what they're doing. Just know other antiques dealers buy from them and they are huge. Trust this place.

Yelp
"...drayage is the transport of goods over a short distance, often as part of a longer overall move and is typically completed in a single work shift..."* In the midst of the liquidation of our stuff/remodel, we learned a new word "drayage". We feared the charge for such would be high as we had a ton of not-worth-much-stuff. Abell Auctioneers http://abell.com/ http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/classichollywood/la-ca-mn-classic-hollywood-20160221-story.html showed up on schedule, packed our crap, er stuff, and hauled it away. A few weeks later we received a letter from Abell for which we both poured a stiff drink prior to opening, thoroughly prepared to pay the "drayage" ($720.00) as our crap, er stuff garnered no revenue for Abell. TOTAL surprise! Minus "drayage" at auction, Abell made some cash so did we, enough to cover a goodly portion of the bathroom remodel. Yay! * https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drayage

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE, RUDE!!! They have some great things, been buying for years but their level of being nasty has just worn me out!!!

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about the team at Abell. I have learned so much just by encountering many of their offerings that I truly believe it has made a substantial impact in my ability to sell my own wares. Don reminds me of the Dad I wish I had and it boggles my mind that people as nice as Ally and Max still call LA home. It's always wonderful to see Arlene in the office and all of them are very kind to my pup Pedro who travels with me most of the time.

Yelp
This is by far the best auction company to work with. The entire team : Joe, Todd, Don, Allie, the business office, everyone is so professional, you can tell they love what they do, and they do it well. They make the selling and buying experience a very pleasant one. They also have excellent and accurate pricing. After each quarterly auction, I look forward to the next one. Even in this difficult shopping time full of restrictions, they were able to safely accommodate each and every person. I usually like to go in person, but now I had to bid by phone, I was very nervous that they would not call me and my item will be gone. Like clockwork, they called every time before my items came up, and I had ample time to participate. They are generous with their time and expertise. I highly recommend Abell auction company.

Carolyn C.

Yelp
I have been going to Abell's since 1982 when they were on W. Addams. They are wonderful. I have bought there and also sold my dad's estate when he passed away and later my mom's when she did. I have furnished several houses with rare and beautiful furnishings at reasonable prices. They are helpful, fair, and give exceptional service. I trust them completely. Best auction I have ever been to. Good people, great quality and it is fun seeing what they have and being able to buy treasures.

Yelp
Worked with Abell to auction some items from my parents estate. I received a pittance of the value of these goods. E.g., a set of porcelain antique figurines (18" tall) that were worth over $600 for the set, Abell said they sold them for $25/the pair!......and their commission was deducted from what I received. I would never again sell through them. Abell caters to professional bidders who score valuable antiques at rock bottom prices as they buy in large lots. I regretted this decision immensely.

Yelp
IF I COULD LEAVE 10 STARS I WOULD!!! This is the best company I have dealt with in a very long time. I am in the staging in business and came across a house of treasure. Abells was suggested and I sent what I thought to be a regular "contact us" email and within one hour Patrick Abell not only called me but offered me help like no one else ever has. I felt not like I had a cousin at this company but a brother. I don't know what else to say except if you want to deal with a company with integrity and professionalism and actually CARE about getting you the best for your items... USE ABELLS! You have a customer in me and everyone I know for a lifetime! Thank you Patrick!!!

Guillermo R.

Yelp
Picked up some interesting furniture pieces for one of my customers and I was really amazed by all their antiques they have.

Yelp
I have been in the auction business for a very long time. I have worked with many different moving and shipping companies. That being said, I have to commend you for your movers. All three of the men introduced themselves and shook my hand upon entering my home. They moved efficiently, getting the very large table and mirror down the stairs and out of the house in minutes. And they work very SMART, which makes all the difference in the moving industry.

Jody M.

Yelp
I bid on and won a silver plated vase from them online . They were so accommodating with helping me as a first time purchaser who did not have contacts in the area and needed to sort out the post auction shipping and delivery process of my item to New York. They were very patient in answering multiple emails, and ultimately one of the owners packed and help ship my item to me. It arrived in perfect condition and very quickly. The item was as described, in fact, perhaps in better condition than what was disclosed. Thank you so much for a great experience.

Yelp
A good place to buy but do not sell your goods there you will be ripped off. Why do I say that? Because every person I know has had this experience. Myself included. I am up near Yosemite and I ran into a person who consigned in an antique mall ; same story.

Yelp
What a marvelous experience!! Kudos to Don for coming to my home and giving me realistic appraisals. Kudos, as well, to the three gentleman who arrived promptly this morning and carefully picked up the items of art and furniture. One could not ask for better or more professional service. Highest recommendation.

Yelp
Abell Auctioneers is an excellent place to dispose of items in an estate. They are great about taking everything that you have (picking it up and selling what is saleable) and their commission rates are lower than most houses. In addition, they are locally/family owned, very friendly and very communicative. I recommend Abell to anyone looking for help valuing or selling tangible personal property. 100 years of excellence!

Pamela D.

Yelp
I am extremely pleased with the service I received from Abell's. Don Schireson made the process go very smoothly, which I appreciated so much amid the upheaval of getting our parent's house ready to sell. He responded to all my questions in a very timely manner and accommodated my schedule. The men who came to move our furniture, art, rugs, china, glassware, and all the other decorative pieces were careful with packing and moving our things. I would recommend Abell's to anyone and will call them again if I ever need to.

Lisa F.

Yelp
Abell came in and handled every aspect of the liquidation of our estate. They could not have been more helpful or knowledgeable. Joe and his crew were a pleasure to deal with, always above and beyond professional. We got excellent results from the sales. Very, very happy.

Boris M.

Yelp
As a result of Abell Auction's unfair demands my account with LiveAuctioneers was suspended. I refused to pay for the lot that I'd won because Abell charged $180 more than was stated in the original invoice. Abell Auction did NOT state BEFORE the start of the auction that they charge Processing Fee AND Sales Tax. This information has to be reflected in the estimate of the Total BEFORE the time of bidding not AFTER. This is the very FIRST time I was charged for the Sales Tax in liveauctioneers.com. The total with all the charges was over the budget that was allocated for the purpose. If I knew before bidding about these charges I would not go as far as I did. As a result of Abell grossly unfair actions my account was suspended. Shame on you Abell Auction!

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! Going to an auction for the first time, I really didn't know what to expect-- I was more going for the experience rather than to find something -- but it turns out I did find a couple of items I was very interested in and I got a great deal! Far less than I could have ever found myself. A first-timer couldn't have asked for a better experience-- though nervous going in, I felt comfortable within a few minutes of participation and I definitely got alot of the help I needed to get to that stage. I'll be back!

Yelp
Participating in an online Abell auction was a great experience resulting in adding a critical piece of art to our collection. The breadth of their art offerings is great and we look forward to participating again. As a curator, artist and collector I will follow future auctions with enthusiasm. The staff assembles quality collections and promotes the opportunity for a beginner collector or an established museum to enrich the arts in their communities. Their professionalism and a well configured system for anyone to participate makes partaking in online auctions easy and bulls confidence immediately.

Yelp
Beware! Absolute joke. Their pickup team took almost 8 hours to load furniture (with my help) and bitched the entire time. Then they left without saying a word and left behind the tables to a Crate and Barrel patio set valued at 5,000 (brand new). I called Abell and they said "oh... well you can drop it off if you want". Really?!? I told them you can't sell a patio set with the tables missing and I paid you to pick it up. He said they would come get it the following week, which never happened. After weeks of no communication or returned calls/emails, I received a check for $3400 in the mail. Now I gave them about $150,000 in furniture and art, including a Warhol original which they sold for $90, and received $3,400! Gave them a brand new restoration hardware bedroom set valued at $40,000 and they sold it for $50 minus their commissions and moving fees. This is not an auction house for Sellers.... it is a garage sale, so expect pennies on the dollar. Read the contract CAREFULLY, as I should have. My bad. I will never use them again but will definitely go there to buy somebody else's belongings for (literally!) pennies on the $100. They have no clue how to auction based on value.... I'd have netted more donating it to goodwill. Sad.

Yelp
Patrick Abell and his staff were unfailingly kind and helpful throughout the sale of my mom's jewelry. Her pieces got great prices and the process was fantastic. I can't recommend this auction house highly enough!

Yelp
We recently used Abell to auction some artwork and they were great! Pat came by to look at our stuff, gave us reasonable estimates of value, most of which were exceeded, had his guys come pick it up and stayed in touch all through the auction process. They were recommended by some friends who had a great experience with them as well and we have been very much satisfied with the experience. We also got some great prices for the works we placed with them. Helpful, professional and trustworthy.

Yelp
I have been a client and customer with Abell for about 11 years now. I want to start off by saying that Abell Auction Company is a family owned and operated business with the same family since they first opened over 100 years ago. Over the years, I have gotten to know this family and can say that they are all dedicated to the incredible work they do and honestly care about the clients they serve. And it doesn't stop there. The average non family staff member has been employed there for more than 15 years. This doesn't count the several team members who have been there for more than 30 years with at least 2 that I know of who have been there for more than 50 years. What that says is that this is a company who believes in taking care of the people who take care of them and that includes people like me! Yesterday, I participated in an online auction they did and witnessed this auction company bring in well over 2 million dollars for their estate clients jewelry and art which well exceeded the auction estimates. this would include some auction records being broken for certain lots based on my research. This shows that the bidding customers trust them in the same way that I do. In today's auction world, this is difficult to find as some of you reading this can most likely agree

Yelp
Abell's is fun and totally not pretentious like Sotheby's or Bonhams. Their premiums are lower as well. They have both a Thursday weekly auction and a fine antique/art auction a couple of times a year. Know what you're bidding on, though. Inspect everything well before you bid. I have often gotten caught up in the moment when I see something come up for bid that I haven't inspected but I think I like it - only to discover after the auction I was a fool for not looking at it more closely. But that is my fault, not theirs. I've made so great deals here, and some not so great deals. Know the value of what you're bidding on.
