Google
Just an absolutely awesome restaurant with amazing, high quality food and actually gives you enough portion size. Kinda cliche but Abe’s Cafe has literally brightened my time at Berkeley lol especially these past semesters where it has gotten pretty tough and miserable. Thank you Abe’s Cafe for always making my day better every time I go!

A Bagel Letdown: Abe's Cafe 3 Star Disappointment This place had the potential for a breakfast win, but sadly, it fell flat in most areas. Let's get this out of the way first: the atmosphere is, well, lacking. It feels more like a forgotten corner than a vibrant breakfast spot. Service wasn't much better - think disinterested and impersonal. Now, onto the main event: the food. With high hopes, I dove into their bagel with eggs. Unfortunately, the bagel itself was a major disappointment. Small and underwhelming, it lacked the satisfying heft you crave in a good breakfast bagel. To make matters worse, it wasn't even toasted properly, leaving me with a mouthful of doughy disappointment. The price point for this underwhelming experience? Shockingly high. For what I got, I could have had a far superior breakfast elsewhere. Unless you're desperate and have low expectations, I'd recommend steering clear. There are much better bagel and egg options out there that won't leave you feeling ripped off.

Healthy fresh food served efficiently. Convenient location near campus. All day breakfast. Has small, often crowded sidewalk seating in addition to a few indoor tables.

Google
Grabbed a special croissant without the bacon before an exam. I couldn’t even finish it all before because it was so big. The flavors, ingredients, and portions were fantastic. The croissant was flaky and soft. Everything inside it was delicious. I’m not a fan of arugula so I always love when I’m able to eat and enjoy it in ways I’ve never tried :)

Google
Don't let the no frills atmosphere fool you; Abe's is amazing. The coffee and service was fantastic. Also, do yourself a favor and get more than one empanada and enjoy the flavor and salsa. Prices were reasonable by Berkeley standards.

Google
I have been getting lunch from this place for about 2-3 years and I'm ashamed I didn't write a review sooner. There's a reason why this place is so highly rated. The food is delicious and the people who work there are amazing. Don't sleep on this place if you live in or close to Berkeley. My personal favorite is the special breakfast burrito (see photo) but everything on the menu is great.

Google
The BEST egg sandwich I've had in quite some time + portions are massive such great bang for your buck with the freshest ingredients. ALSO the spinach and pineapple juice was BOMB! To top it off Abe is such a great guy and really brightened my morning with his positive vibes and energy :) Thanks Abe!!!!

Google
Fresh bagel! 🥯 They don’t use any artificial seasoning so the taste is clean and delicious😌 Their indoor space is not spacious, and only a few seats are available, but they do have many outdoor seats available! # Hummus & Avocado Jalapeños Bagel 🥑

Yelp
I love this spot! Abe is so so nice and we always have a great conversation. He is great to his customers and makes everything from scratch which is really sweet. I love the empanadas here. The humida, mushroom, and chorizo have been my favorite for sure. Each gets served with a side of chimichurri which is my favorite. I love this spot! Perfectly to get an afternoon pick me up with coffee or have a quick and easy meal. Check it out if you haven't yet!

Yelp
Cute little cafe tucked on the "quieter" side that's near UC Berkeley's Engineering Buildings. There are a couple tables outside, as well as inside. My visit took place a few weeks ago and I believe the owner (don't know his name) greeted me and took my order. I got the Veggie Special Burrito and it was packed with veggies, just the way I like it. No skimping on the ingredients. What made this extra tasty was the special home made salsa, mild with a ever so slight kick. I asked for more salsa as I was licking the little cup it came in. I also ordered a lavender latte, which was also tasty and as expected. Shoutout to the ladies working that day as they did it all (took orders, cleaned, provided excellent customer service, and etc). They do it all, and with a smile. Parking looks to be street parking only, read the signs as this area is probably strict with its close proximity to the college. I walked over after taking public transportation from downtown Berkeley. Looking forward to another visit in the future. #17/2024

Yelp
Staff is great they will make you smile and add energy to your day. Sandwich & drink were tasty, they had WiFi, a view of the street, and are closely located to Berkeley. Great option for a cafe

Yelp
The people here are so nice and kind. They're a small local business with delicious pastries, food and drinks! I'm addicted to their cookies. I can't remember what the cookies are called but its our favorite! The atmosphere is very inviting. There's some seating indoor and indoor or you can take it to go! Give them a try!!

Yelp
Service 11/10 Food 10/10 People watching 9/10 This is my favorite lunch spot near campus! Everything is tasty and fresh.

Yelp
Service was very fast. I ordered a bunch of Breakfast for people while visiting one morning (two trips). The breakfast sandwhich was great, and the burrito solid. The upcharge to add extra meat was minimal. Space a little small so probably better to go than sit down, but it's a cafe so about what you should expect for UC Berkeley rent costs.

Yelp
Small local spot with a warm and kind atmosphere. Quick service with delicous food, highly recommend!

Yelp
$14.88 for this lukewarm chorizo empanadas, it was inedible. So disappointed & so hungry. Just not good at all. Very nice employees tho so for that they get 2 stars

Briana L.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious! I came for a quick breakfast and I got my burrito within 5 mins. Inside was so cute, but seating looked limited. The workers greeted me with such positivity before and after ordering. Overall, a wonderful environment with great food!

Yelp
Abe's is a cute lil spot to grab delicious food, fresh juice, smoothie or coffee to go. There are also a few small tables inside and out. Great jazz music plays from the speakers. There's a deli case where you can find tasty sweet treats. Their breakfast burritos are yummy, and grilled perfectly; the smoothies are super fresh! The guy at the counter is very helpful too.

Yelp
WHEN: Thursday @9:30am PARKING: Metered Street parking for like $2/hour if I remember correctly. There was a decent amount at this hour. A friend and I wanted to do breakfast nearby the daycare she dropped her baby off that lasted for a little over and hour. There's all sorts of options here so it looked promising! There's both seatings indoor and outdoor, but quite limited. Here's what we shared: GREEN DREAM SMOOTHIE - 24oz - $7.25 Avocado, Spinach, Banana, Plain Yogurt. Pretty good to me! No complaints. VEGGIE QUESADILLA - $11 Black Bean Spread, Spinach, Zucchini, Bell Peppers and Mozzarella on Flour Tortilla. Cut into 4 sections, it also comes with a tiny side salad. I really enjoyed this and knowing its packed with veggies made me feel good. SPECIAL BREAKFAST CROISSANT - $10.75 Avocado, Arugula, Bacon, Scrambled Eggs, Chipotle Aioli and Cheddar Cheese. This hefty sandwich may need to be eaten with a fork and knife because things might fall out trying to eat like a sandwich. It's really good and comes with 2 tiny orange slices. The staff I thought were very friendly and the prices were very reasonable. Definitely a great spot for students in the area.

Yelp
Random spot on northside that I'd never tried before, so I finally decided to swing by during my last 2 months of college. I was pleasantly surprised! I tried the steak sandwich, which was warm and super flavorful! The seasoning set it apart from other sandwiches, which just taste like deli meat and mayo most of the time. I came back once more to try the breakfast burrito, which I liked even more. The burritos are huge! I ordered it with the pineapple pork sausage, which was slightly sweet and so flavorful! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Perfect for studying! Bright lighting and instrumental music were great at keeping me awake with studying.

Yelp
Today was my first time at apes café, and I really enjoyed it. Of my favorite drinks is the chai latte which I order at most cafés and this has to be one of my favorite that I've ever had. I also bought the taco trio and it was filling and yummy. The service was, extremely kind and sweet. The ambience is great. It's a small quaint space. I'd love to come here with a friend or my husband next time. Bring a laptop and work for a couple hours.

Yelp
Updating my review to add the message Abe sent to me in response to my original review. I'll let you decide if it's reasonable or totally insane. Also attached a few reviews from the past from other folks of Abe being creepy and/or racist. ***Abe's Response*** Eric! Things could always be solved by talking and not trying to hurt a business already hurt by pandemic. We are in the city of Berkeley Alameda county and as you and everybody knows inflation and taxes ate very high and of course if you want to use your card you have to pay a fee. Don't expect someone else pay for you. You ate welcome to ho back for a latte on the house and your money back. Thank you for your star. I hope you find a place to go an enjoy a late.

Yelp
Enormous, delicious breakfast burritos . Very fresh coffee! Small space with a few tables, but very clean and inviting. lots of fresh air & friendly people.

R S.

Yelp
Just alright. Owner is very pushy. Asked for toasted bagel, was not toasted. Bacon was ice cold. Options are limited in this area.

Max M.

Yelp
asked for an iced latte, barista poured espresso over ice making it an iced americano with the tiniest splash of oat milk, charges an extra dollar for that dollop. mad disappointing, waste of money, threw drink away it was so bad. I regret tipping before finding out bro can't make a simple drink

Yelp
Visited Berkeley and got to say hi to Abe again! Treated my friend to a hot cocoa and split a chocolate croissant between the two of us. It was awesome to introduce her to Abe. He even went out of his way to cut the croissant and place them in two separate little parchment bags! Such excellent service and a wonderful little cafe that leaves you homesick when you leave. Feels like the perfect little slice of Northside heaven :) Such a cozy, relaxing little spot! Abe's + a walk through the early October fog of UC Berkeley's campus = perfect morning

Yelp
Have heard a lot of good things about this place and finally got a chance to try it. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and waved for my friend and I to stop in. He gave us samples of the aguas frescas and both the watermelon and spinach pineapple were amazing! The place was very well kept and cleaned after each customer. Everyone looked happy to be there and most knew the owner like they come in every day. I ordered the steak sandwich and my friend had the chicken and they were both so good, fresh! We also got to taste a few of the desserts and the owner took the time to talk to us and made us feel right at home. Definitely going to frequent this place.

Yelp
I loved this spot! It's kind of hard to notice among all the other restaurants in the area, but it's worth a try for sure. I got a croissant sandwich with egg and bacon, and it also came with some chipotle aioli spread which was delicious. The sandwich was huge! So much more food than I expected and it also came with a couple of little orange slides. The eggs were soft as well as the croissant, and they also gave plenty of bacon. There's some indoor and outdoor seating as well. The owners are also super friendly! I'll have to be back to try some of their other sandwiches next time.

Yelp
If the wall art is any indication, Abe's is extremely beloved by students and locals alike. Located on Euclid, just north of the campus, they offer a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Based on several reviews here, I stopped in to pick up a chorizo breakfast burrito (~$12 after tax). I had very high expectations based on the reviews, but sadly the burrito was nothing to write home about. Don't get me wrong - it's a solid breakfast burrito, but IMHO, I wouldn't go anywhere near calling it the best. The chorizo and potatoes are mixed and reheated together, so they're hot, but the potatoes are mushy and offer no textural contrast with the scrambled eggs and the chorizo had absolutely no caramelization. The burrito is quite large, so I can see how it offers great value, but taste-wise, it's just average. On the other hand, the staff/owner were extremely delightful - very friendly and welcoming, so I can understand why people love this place. Might check out their lunch offerings one of these days, but I'm not sure I'd be back for another breakfast burrito.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
The owner is an incredibly nice guy and the food/coffee was absolutely delicious! It's so rare to find a cafe like this where the management is so invested in their customers and the neighborhood. Definitely will be back for more!

Tanner K.

Yelp
Fresh food, great coffee, lovely place to sit for lunch. Everything I've tried here is fantastic, I especially loved the special empanadas.
google avatar

Yelp
I met Abe in 2020 when I started my undergrad at Berkeley, his cafe was right down the block of my apartment. His shop has my favorite breakfast meals in the area, even after all these years!
google avatar

Kenneth R.

Yelp
After Abe's shut its doors as the pandemic wore on, I was worried that they might never re-open. I was delighted and relieved when I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the cafe had re-opened! I stopped by for lunch last week, telling the woman who was about to take my order that I wanted a sandwich of some kind. Abe burst out from the back and asked "You like steak, don't you?" I had to confess that I do. Carnitas became my flavor of the day. Needless to say, I accepted Abe recommendation that I include avocado as an extra. My lunch cost $14.77, including tax and tip. I picked up the sandwich at the curb and raced home to have it. This was clearly the best carnitas sandwich of my life. It was worth every penny. Do I recommend Abe's? You bet! Stop by on a weekday, and check it out.
google avatar

Celena C.

Yelp
I ordered the Avocado and Hummus sandwich, and it was a bit pricey for what it was. The sandwich included tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce, and they made those leftover ingredients into a side salad with balsamic glaze drizzled over. The sandwich was filling, but it was just an average sandwich. The workers were really nice though!
google avatar

Yelp
Abe's is a casual cafe in north Berkeley just outside the north gate. It's a Berkeley spot. Casual, chalk board menu, homey. Order at the counter......Not winning a Michelin Star but hey, I liked it Coffee is the best ruler of a cafe and I had a well executed latte. A+ We also had a variety of food. A proccutto sandwich, salad and eggs on toasts. All were yummy and well prepared.
google avatar

Serena J.

Yelp
Tried the chicken tinga tostadas and the watermelon juice. The tostadas are unexpectedly sweet. They didn't exactly satisfy my Mexican food cravings, but still a decent meal. The watermelon juice is freshly...uhhhh...squeezed? Not really sure how watermelon juice is made, but anyway, it's super refreshing. The vibe is nice, and it's fun to look at the chalk drawings on the wall, so I'll round up to four.
google avatar

Tracy D.

Yelp
Yummy. Took a break from work and grabbed a steak and cheese sandwich and watermelon drink. The sandwich was soft and crispy, perfectly warm and so tasty. The watermelon drink - can I just take a bucket of it please? I'll be frequenting Abe's often. Can't wait for Berkeley to be back in session.
google avatar

Janna L.

Yelp
Such a cute cafe! Got the taco trio and it definitely gives you bang for your buck. They also have such a huge selection of other options and drinks to choose from. It was quick too: when I came at lunchtime, I waited in line to order, but all the food came within 10 min of ordering.
google avatar

Alexis T.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, Abe's is not a place I would've tried on my own if my friend hadn't brought me in. I'm really glad I tried it though. The place itself is actually fairly small, but I've never had a hard time getting a seat. Abe is a super friendly guy. He usually offers me complimentary watermelon juice, which tastes so fresh. The food at Abe's cafe is so fresh in general. I've tried a variety of things here, and my favorite is ordering the hummus and avocado sandwich, and adding in bacon. There's a variety of fresh foods you can get and good drinks, which is perfect for in-between class meals.
google avatar

Isabella F.

Yelp
Very fresh and quality food right by campus on Northside! In a world of La Burrita, Chipotle, and the like, I appreciate that Abe's is one of the few places my campus in Berkeley that has authentic, affordable, and healthy Hispanic food. They have homemade aguas frescas, tamales, ceviche and more. There are also plenty of veggie options. I also enjoy their breakfast bagels! They also have WiFi and tables to work at so this is a nice place to come in and get some work done. The space is cozy and seating is limited but I've always been able to find space. Another thing I love about this place is that anything you order comes with a healthy little surprise like a watermelon slice or a side salad. They also play artists like Enrique Iglesias and Juan Luis Guerra. The only downside would be their hours! I wish they were open more often. Whether you're a homesick latino (guilty) or just trying to get some cheap and tasty food near campus, stop by!

Yelp
First time visiting was a great experience. As soon as my friend and I walked in the man behind the counter greeted us with a very warm good morning. They had a huge breakfast selection and I got the coffee and a bagel sandwich. They offer indoor and outdoor seating but since it was a nice morning we sat outdoors. The man behind the counter brought our food to us. Great hidden gem, 10/10 recommend coming here!

Danilo M.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go on Euclid. Abe is the best host and the food is delicious!

David S.

Yelp
If you want great food, great people, great music playing, the best espresso on Euclid and a community vibe, this place is for you.

Phoebe F.

Yelp
absolutely delicious! it doesn't look like much from the outside but this place is a gem. Abe himself is lovely, incredible/fresh/flavorful food, and great music
google avatar

Paola L.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place, anything you decide to choose from the menu board will be superb. I recommend you try this place out if you haven't! A-1 customer service
google avatar

Sampath D.

Yelp
This is a place on Northside of Berkeley that I had always walked by so one day I decided to try it after another one of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley had closed early for the day. I got the vegetarian sandwich and although all of the ingredients were good, it felt a little bit bland. It could've used some dressing or even more pesto to make it more flavorful. They do, however, have a lot of options on the menu for vegetarians so I hope to come back in the future and try something else. The person who runs the restaurant is also super friendly with all of the customers and makes you feel at home. It also has free wifi which is a surprise for such a small sandwich shop.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, we hit the perfect spot for breakfast during our visit to UC Berkeley. We ordered two Mexican hot chocolates and a quesadilla, which was large enough to feed two people...although my son didn't want to share it. Ha! The quesadilla was bout 3 inches thick filled with loads of eggs, cheese and other goodness. I highly recommend Abe's Cafe for a morning pitstop.
google avatar

Lizzy N.

Yelp
Abe is know around the area for being creepy. I did not know this until he cornered me alone in his store after "closing early" and tried to flirt with me for fifteen minutes before i had made a strong enough excuse to leave. Now I have heard from many others that he does this frequently especially to college students. Real shame because I have come in before with male friends and enjoyed the smoothies. In short: it's a great place to eat for women in a group or with friends but if you're alone it's worth it to go literally anywhere else on Euclid.

Hye Rhee L.

Yelp
Got a large latte this morning and its less than subpar - bitter and bland but they charged $5.25. I should have gone to blue bottle.
google avatar

Jack J.

Yelp
I've been doing a study regarding the best breakfast sandwich in Berkeley. Though Alphonso's is good and Bette's yummy albeit intermittent Abe's brings together a moist croissant, tasty ham, an egg cooked to order and delicious chipotle aioli to provide The Best Breakfast Sandwich in Berkeley! Don't forget to wash it down with fresh watermelon aqua fresca!
google avatar

Melanie Y.

Yelp
I used to come here quite a bit when I worked a part-time job nearby in one of the computer science buildings. I would come here with my friend and co-worker, who was great friends with the owner, and he would greet both of us with such friendliness! But the next time I went by myself, he didn't so much as smile or say hi - I can only assume he just didn't remember me even though I went there often. That made me a bit sad lol. Other than that though, the BLT was always one of my favorite sandwiches to get, and the cold brew tastes fantastic. Not typically a huge coffee drinker, but it was really refreshing and rich! Prices are pretty standard for Berkeley, but portions are large enough to fill you up. I haven't been back since the owner was a bit cold to me the last few times I went, but the food is homey and worth a try if you're in the area.

Ava C.

Yelp
Got breakfast here this morning. Tacos Rancheros. Absolutely delicious and a perfect size! Friendly service. Will definitely be back again. :)
google avatar

Calvin T.

Yelp
TL;DR: super friendly staff, good sandwich options, a little pricey I'm always a fan of supporting local businesses and Abe's is just testament to that! Abe's Cafe has a wide variety of sandwiches salads to choose from for your lunch needs, as well as occasional specials that are sure to impress. One of the things that really makes this business stand out from others is its amazing service. Abe and all of the workers are extremely friendly and welcoming them and I think that made all the difference for them. I got the Roast Beef sandwich, an item on the special menu at the time. ROAST BEEF SANDWICH (4/5) - A ton of different ingredients, including avocado and arugula - A little strong with the onions - Really like the choice in bread - Not super huge in size, but comes with a side salad Truthfully, the sandwiches can get pretty pricey. My roast beef sandwich came out to $9.50, which is comparable to Mezzo on Southside. I don't mind all that much because it's a local business, but that may be something to know for some customers. I'm looking forward to coming back just to see the owner be so friendly with the customers that walk in. I'll try more things in the future!
google avatar

Ellyn B.

Yelp
Lattes are good and staff is very friendly. Food is solid as well but took a while to come out I got the egg and cheese croissant with no ham

Alice Y.

Yelp
Came to Berkeley for a COVID-19 staycation, and enjoyed a DELICIOUS veggie burrito and latte for brunch at Abe's. One party is allowed inside at a time in adherence to social distancing. Ordered at the counter and waited outside for the food and drink to be ready. Hand sanitizer was available at the door. Fast, friendly service as well as amazing food! Will return next time we are in the area.
google avatar

Alison M.

Yelp
Of the "student" food options on Euclid, Abe's is the most likely to serve a fresh, healthful and not overly caloric lunch (for those of us who aren't students!) The daily "frescas" are amazing and delicious. Behold, the Cobb salad (w/ a cheese swap out) and watermelon aqua fresca, which was delicious and hydrating on a rare Berkeley hot day.
