The Abode Canterbury | Best places to stay in Canterbury

"When the Abode opened in Canterbury there was a huge sigh of relief; finally this beautiful city had somewhere chic and comfortable to stay. It’s location – right in the middle of the pedestrianised High Street – couldn’t be better; everything, from the impressive Cathedral, to the boutiques and quirky stores around the Buttermarket, is a short stroll away.    Affordable, and equally welcoming to couples, friends or family, it’s a sleek but unpretentious boutique hotel. The champagne bar – all scarlet leather chairs and an original beamed ceiling – is a great spot to kick off the evening.  For a special treat, book the Fabulous Suite, which boasts a private decked rooftop terrace. We stayed at Abode for 3 nights earlier this week. It is a bit of a fiddle to get to if you have a car and want to unload but it’s right in the middle of a medieval town so you have to expect these things! The check in staff were all very helpful and friendly. The room was at the side so there was no real view but equally there was no noise. The room was neither small nor large. Everything was clean and everything worked. There is a quiet lounge on the first floor and a great bar come coffee lounge next to the entrance and a more upmarket bistro restaurant at the rear. I thought it was very good value considering it was only marginally more expensive than a more budget hotel and right on the main pedestrian shopping road. It is also only 2 minutes away from the Cathedral. We have family who have moved locally who don’t have enough room for guests so we will be returning from time to time. We will come back to Abode because our stay was nice, the staff were good and it was reasonably priced. We did breakfast out mind you 😂

A great location and friendly staff, but the room left us a little disappointed. We were not completely unhappy, but feel we would have got better value elsewhere, particularly if we went with a more ‘budget’ hotel like a premier inn. This was booked as a gift for birthday getaway, and the person who booked the room was rather disappointed. The room did not look as it had been pictured on the sites at the time of booking and did not have much value for money. Many parts of the room were broken, including loose bedside tables -which were glass. The wardrobe had an internal light but due to a broken hinge, this light stayed on at all times, leading to disturbed sleep through not being able to turn it off. The shower left little to be desired, with us both feeling we had to nearly face plant the wall to be able to get any kind of contact with the water due to poor pressure. The settings on the head did not change when we tried to turn to see if it was user error. It was, in fact, just a poor shower. The mattress was very soft, along with the pillows. This is just a matter of personal preference, as I awoke feeling comfortable whereas my partner was in quite some discomfort. Would have been nice if one soft and one firm pillow had been provided to have a choice.

Not quite a 5* - too many small things wrong. We stayed in the "Fabulous" Suite for 7 nights|On the up side|Location - amazing right in the centre of town|Suite is enormous. A bit chilly to sit out on the terrace but a great view. Lounge area is huge with comfortable sofa which would sit at least eight|Bed - very comfortable, pillows a little less so|Bar staff - all amazingly good. Nothing was too much trouble|Decent breakfast|Restaurant food very good|On the minus side|Lots of steps in the room - be careful at night. Step up to bathroom is lit so if you like darkness, take an eyeshade|Lighting was very confusing trying to work out which lights switch on and off where|Reservation staff didn't offer any deals, I had to find them on the website myself and I saved £800 by doing so|Restaurant has limited menu so we only ate there once|Reception staff were busy when we arrived to welcome was a bit lacking |No removable shower. - just an overhead.|Floors are VERY slippery - I nearly went A over T twice. AFter that I didn't move after a shower without holding on to something|Shower and bath both open to view from the room - just not our thing|We had to ask EVERY day for 4 mugs (they are quite small and when we did get 4, they were cups. |One morning there was a bag of rubbish outside the room opposite. It was still there when we returned that evening|All small things but enough of them to stop it being a 5* review and they wont stop us going back

The rooms, once you get there, are very nice. Comfortable, plenty of work space and reasonably priced. However, when arriving at a hotel mid morning I don't expect my room to be ready but neither do I expect a curt "we're not doing check in" which is what I got from the young man who was evidently displeased at his meeting being interrupted. Happily, this was the last I saw of him during my stay and the man that checked me out and chased my taxi for me couldn't have been more helpful.||I cannot recommend either dining room or bar, the first because when I expressed an interest in eating I was told: "we had a wedding here yesterday and decided not to do food today." When I asked in desperation for crisps, the barman had to go out somewhere and returned with a small bowl of ready salted - "on the house." Which leads me to the bar prices which might be acceptable in Manhattan or West London but for Canterbury High Street they are outrageous. ||It's a reasonably priced stay if you eat and drink elsewhere but the service is hit and miss and there are better options available.

This is a nice hotel with very helpful and charming staff. The breakfast was enjoyable, with a good selection of food. However, it would be better if guests were offered a pot of coffee rather than just a small cup. I did find the mattresses to be very soft and possibly of lower quality, which led to some back discomfort in the morning. That was a bit disappointing. One of the main reasons I chose this hotel was because it advertised having a gym. I specifically checked with the staff about the availability of a cycling machine and was told there was one. When I went to use the gym, I found two cycling machines, but unfortunately, neither of them worked. When I asked at reception, I was told that the machines are nineteen years old and are no longer functional. I would strongly recommend that the hotel invest in at least one new cycling machine. It would significantly improve the gym facilities and meet the expectations of guests who value fitness amenities.

Paid for a “Superior double room” and got a normal small room, but had friends who stayed at the same time and only paid for a normal room however got a large room with bigger bed, sofa, bathroom with separate free standing bath. Rooms also felt very outdated. Make sure to read the small print on the car park as the signs will lead you to believe it’s £25 for your stag however it’s £25 a night. If you can get into the car park that is as the barrier is extremely shoddy and fails to open. Just go to travelodge it’s cheaper, parking is only £7 a night you get a better room.

Not a bad hotel. Staff very helpful and charming. The breakfast diner has a superb selection of food. The bar area had a great vibe to it. However it was disappointing that the hotel charged a heavy amount to park to stay there. Should be included in the stay. Otherwise.well located and highly recommended

Google
Abode is a great central location in the city centre. Staff were friendly right away. We had a car to park and though the car park is quite small we did get a spot (for an extra fee). Our room was clean and spacious. I booked this hotel mainly due to them having air conditioning and it was in good and working order (summer stay). I was pleased with my stay and would stay here again.

Yelp
Located in the heart of a medieval town and practically next to a marvelous cathedral that survived Nazi bombing, the Abode is a charming hotel with modern amenities. My group of thirty visitors from the Open Road program was on a tour of the great gardens of England and arranged for us to stay there for five nights. We were seen to our rooms and the attentive staff took care of our needs. Our plan included breakfast and their buffet was too much for any individual. Choices of eggs in any style including coddled with fresh juice, piping hot coffee with warmed milk so the coffee does not turn cold, cereal, bread, fruit, marmite, etc. the servers, Papp, Becky, their manager and most especially Molly, were more than attentive to our every need and were there are 7 am as well as 9 pm. Dinners were first class - cod, halibut, lamb. The cozy bar was delightful Our rooms had big screen tv, a desk, chair, AC, views out and a handy bath towel warmer. Do wish the toiletry shelf had been larger, though. Museum across the street, money exchange on the block, historic hospital down the next block.

Yelp
Ok, I had the pleasure of staying here a couple of nights. The first night (a Saturday and a lot more expensive) was paid for by the company and I paid for the second night. This place isn't cheap (averaging a £100 a night). The location, on Canterbury's high street, was excellent. My room was quite pleasant. The view (of a corrugated roof) wasn't exactly inspiring. Tea-making facilities are available in the room along with a few top-grade cookies and organic tea. The bed was comfortable but the height of it and the placement of the television (at a little over bed-height) when combined with my double chin made TV viewing a little uncomfortable. Poor planning. Breakfast was very nice. However, not without some problems. On the first day we went down at 10am expecting that half an hour would be plenty of time. Due to the slow service by the time our breakfast had arrived they had started clearing away the buffet items. My full English breakfast wasn't as full as it could have been. I only had one fried egg and there was no black pudding (kaszanka). Not that I am particularly fond of black pudding, but I would like to get some. I suspect I had been given someone else's break. Oh, the toast was burnt too. When I am staying in a classy hotel I expect them not to burn my toast. Breakfast on the second day was more agreeable, I arrived early to ensure I was able to take advantage of the buffet. The hotel's cocktail bar was very nice. The first night I had an egg nog and for a nightcap a banana rumba drink. Not cheap at ten pounds a shot. But, hey, I wasn't paying Checking out was a pain. The girl had trouble understanding that I wanted separate bills for each night's stay. I gave up in the end.

Yelp
While visting Canterbury I stayed here and i have to say this hotel is in a great location. Literally right in the center on High street by all the shopping, restaurants, bars and canterbury cathedral. Plus, Patisserie Valeri across the street has some of the best pastries i've ever had. -The rooms were nice, a good size and modern. The beds were comfortable but a wee-bit narrow but nothing extreme. -The staff was O.K nothing to write home about but they are not very knowledgeable of the area but were fine overall -The restaurant looks like a complete waste of money but then again I didn't find the desire to eat there with so many options just down the street. All in all will stay there again when in canterbury

Yelp
Stayed here. It was very very good. Our room was charming and I can't say enough about the staff. One fellow in particular (looked like James Cordon's brother) was charming and very helpful. I see him going far in whatever he chooses to do. Had afternoon tea, 1st time, not tea drinkers but it was fun. Think it was about 20£ &a worth it. Had breakfast in shops around hotel but food looked good. Will put this on the list to return to!!!

Yelp
The food and drinks here are excellent, I was disappointed with the size of the rooms. I stayed in a double room and it was the smallest double room that I have ever stayed in, even if the décor was lovely. This certainly is the best located hotel in Canterbury and couldn't be much closer to the Cathedral.

Yelp
Last week was my first visit to an Abode hotel and I was very impressed! This hotel is so well located in Canterbury - it is right in teh centre, walking distance from the Cathedral and all the shops. They also have a free car park - well, on a first come , first served basis which I was lucky with. The bedrooms are of a reasonable size and well appointed. I love their room typescomfortable, desirable, enviable and fabulous! Great! The restaurant is run by Michael Caine, a top chef and the food is excellent. A great find in the centre of Canterbury - I am looking forard to seeing more Abode hotels

Yelp
I can sum up how I feel about Abode's cocktails in one word: Excellent!! Their service is great, the atmosphere is nice, and the prices are relatively reasonable. I can honestly say that I have no complaints about the hotel. I have been to different ones around Canterbury, and then by all means give it a try. There's not much more to say about it, just go try it!!

Yelp
I recently stayed here. I had oringinally gone to another hotel in town but had such a bad experience there that I left and tried to get a room here. They were almost fully booked but went out of their way to make a last minute booking for me and get me a safe, comfortable room for the night. It was my birthday and I mentioned this at check in. By the time I had gone up to my room after checking in a member of staff had run up with a box of chocolates and a card reading: 'from the staff at the abode, happy birthday!' and left them on my bed. I was astounded at this wonderful, thoughtful gesture. The room was lovely. It was very comfortable, clean and luxurious with everything you could need to survive away from home! It certainly lives up to it's four star reputation. It is very well placed in town and is within walking distance of the shops and the cathedral. Beautiful hotel with excellent management.

Yelp
Stayed here the Saturday after That Wedding - a std double cost £120 via Booking.com. Breakfast was extra at around £8.50 each with the 40% off voucher we were handed on arrival. Room 102 was large with the bathroom off to our right which was a wetroom that would please Japanese guests without fear of flooding the diningroom below! The carpet was so spongy, I thought I was going to fall over! Two large single beds were slung together & had VySpring mattreses that were too soft for my taste. The room was air-conditioned, very modern with photos of the cathedral etc. An iron, board, hairdrier, writing paper, chargeable tuckbox, tea/coffee making LCD TV, DVD player & a small safe complete the inventory. The free WiFi required registration but worked fine The (bathless) bathroom was very nicely adorned With a fold-down seat in the shower corner - gets my vote! We got a good night's sleep, possibly helped by running up a £37 bar bill after a great curry we had down Palace St. You can occupy from 14:00 & vacate up to midday, the staff were friendly & helpful. We had a full English breakfast that was OK rather than memorable - I prefer crispy bacon!

Yelp
Champagne Bar is a really cosy place to meet up with a friend when you need to catch up. Great atmosphere. Quite busy but you don't feel like you are crowded out. Seating is comfortable and choice of cosy corner or settees. Coffee selection is great too and served with little sweet biscuits. Staff do bug you a little bit but then we only bought one drink and stayed quite a while.

Qype User (Travel…)

Yelp
I read a really bad review in one of the national newspapers regarding Abode and it put me off going for a very long time. However, friends had eaten there and all had raved about it, so we took the plunge one evening and went for the 'taster' menu (about 7 courses!!!). It didn't disappoint and finally the 'West End' had come to Canterbury! The food was truly excellent and the service efficient and professional. It is not a cheap evening out, but like anything in life, you get what you pay for.

Yelp
I stayed here with work and was hugely impressed. A beautiful building with friendly, attentive staff and excellent facilities right in the centre of Canterbury. My room had very possibly the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in, TV and DVD player and beautiful bathroom. Despite being at the front of the hotel, it remained quiet. Although it's at the pricier end of the scale (but hey, I wasn't paying!) I'd definitely say it was worth the cost.

Yelp
The size of the room pretty good ,enjoyed breakfast ,well managed, very great customer services, remarkable well recommended.
