ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE

Hotel · Siena

Adler Spa Resort Thermae | Best places to stay in Tuscany

"Among the many thermal spa resorts in Tuscany, ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE is one of the most appealing. Located in the heart of the Val d’Orcia – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – it offers a perfect balance of relaxation, comfort, and beautiful surroundings. The ambience is a stylish calm, with a design that blends in well with the Tuscan landscape. Food and wine play an important role in the experience. Guests can enjoy fresh, regional dishes at the main restaurant or opt for something more informal at the cosy Osteria dell’Amicizia. A wine tasting in the resort’s Travertine wine cellar is highly recommended for those wanting to explore local labels. The wellness area is impressive, with indoor and outdoor thermal pools heated naturally to 37°C, a panoramic whirlpool, and a range of saunas and steam baths inspired by ancient Roman traditions. The resort is the perfect base for visiting the lovely hill towns of Pienza, Montepulciano, and San Quirico d’Orcia. The famous wine region of Montalcino is nearby, and Siena is about 45 minutes away by car.   " - Nicky Swallow

Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel

Hotel · Cannes

Carlton Cannes | Best places to stay in Cote d'Azur | Bucket List Travels

"Ever since it opened in 1911, this grand hotel – with its landmark domes, allegedly modelled after the breasts of courtesan La Belle Otero – has been the stuff of Riviera legend. Scenes from Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief were filmed in the hotel, and during the Cannes Film Festival it still fills with stars, thanks to its pole position on La Croisette.   Some suites have movie star names and curious features: the Sean Connery has a bathroom under its dome, while the luminous Grace Kelly has a reading nook by a porthole window. Champagne breakfasts on the sunny terrace add another layer of glamour. It’s a splurge, but great fun for film fans.  The hotel’s private beach, jetty and restaurant are still the see-and-be-seen spot in Cannes.  " - Dana Facaros

ME Madrid Reina Victoria

ME Madrid Reina Victoria | Best places to stay in Madrid

"One of the city’s grandest hotels, originally opened in 1919, the Reina Victoria was gutted and transformed to create this glitzy, glamorous ‘lifestyle’ urban playground in the heart of the buzzy Santa Anna neighbourhood. The interior, preserving many of the original architectural features has plenty of wow factor, from the beautiful Ana La Santa Restaurant on the ground floor, to the Radio ME rooftop bar – a notable hotspot for Madrid’s well-heeled, frequently hosting DJs and live events – with giddy panoramic views. Rooms are white, minimalist cool with hardwood floors and maxi minibars that are hard to resist; those on the fifth and sixth floors have balconies with rooftop views. Guest are offered special priority access and rates at the Palacio Santa Ana Metropolitan Club gym and spa next door to the hotel: all in all, a glamorous base for sightseeing or diving into the city’s legendary nightlife. Palacio de Los Duques Gran Melia | Best places to stay in Madrid

"On a quiet street near the Royal Palace, this elegant 19th-century duke’s palace is now one of Madrid’s most luxurious hotels. Set in manicured gardens, the hotel’s modern interior is full of references to the artist Velázquez’s masterpieces – and there are plenty of bells and whistles, especially if you book one of the VIP ‘Red Level’ rooms. Perks for this tier of guest include a personal butler and access to the private lounge with day-long champagne, drinks and fancy snacks. But everyone can enjoy the rooftop plunge pool, hot tub and cocktail bar, and the exotic Thai spa. Restaurants include the prestigious Dos Cielos, run by the Michelin-level Torres brothers. Iturregi Hotela

Hotel · Gipuzkoa

Hotel Iturregi | Best places to stay in Basque Country

"Hidden away among the vineyards, 2km from the charming Basque fishing port of Getaria, this exclusive eight-room hotel is set in a typical, half-timbered Basque baserri (farmhouse). Incredibly peaceful and quiet, this is a romantic place to relax and get away from it all, making it popular with couples. The vibe is akin to staying at a friend’s country house: rooms are large and ooze rustic chic, with enchanting views over the rural landscapes. Immediately surrounding the hotel are vines, farmhouses and sheep-filled meadows, while slightly further afield is the spectacular coast, crowned by Getaria’s lighthouse. A superb, locally-sourced breakfast is served al fresco, accompanied by birdsong, but there’s no restaurant. From Getaria you can follow the beautiful coastal path to Zarautz (approx 3km); you’re 20 minutes by car from San Sebastian. There are special two-night packages for touring cyclists or for fashionistas keen to visit the nearby Balenciaga Museum. " - Dana Facaros

Naxian on the Beach

Hotel · South Aegean

Naxian on the Beach | Best places to stay in Naxos

"Luxury on the Beach would be a far better name for this adults-only beachfront boutique hotel that feels undervalued by at least one star. It claims its own patch at the southern end of Naxos’s Plaka beach with umbrellas, sun loungers plus waiting service, and it includes a restaurant, Tortuga, that was supervised in its infancy by the late, great Anthony Bourdain. The room decor is all wicker and bamboo southeast Asian chic, the bathrooms are fashioned by polished concrete that feel cavern-like; and the balconies boast sea views over dunes colonised by marram grass. (The rooms on the top floor are the best…) The bus stop to Naxos Town is just outside and taxis are on call 24/7. " - John Malathronas

El Remanso Rainforest Lodge

Lodge · Golfito

El Remanso | Best places to stay in Costa Rica

"Stays at Remanso are all about losing yourself in nature. One of Costa Rica’s wildest stretches of rainforest sits outside your villa door and a pristine Pacific beach is a stroll away. Palm-thatch villas in rich hardwoods perch on a hillside; The best have sweeping forest and ocean views from the luxurious king sizes, with generous plunge pool terraces outside. The lodge keeps environmental impact to a minimum: recycling, running on renewable energy and gathering fallen wood to maintain and build cabins. " - Alex Robinson

La Pavillon de la Reine | Best places to stay in Paris

"Set behind a heavy wooden door in pretty, pink-bricked Place de Vosges, this glorious, ivy-clad hotel feels like a secret, and makes a great base for both first-time and returning visitors. The super location puts you in the heart of the shop- and museum-filled Marais, with Victor Hugo’s former home on the opposite side of the square and the Picasso Museum just a 7-minute walk away. When it’s time to wind down, its celebrated restaurant, Anne, and basement spa and fitness area, tick all your boxes for pampering. The hotel is romance on a stick, ideal for couples, but families are well catered for too, notably thanks to the play area in the square’s park just across the street. " - Anna Brooke
