I just moved back to Portland with my family, and this is such a gem in the downtown neighborhood. It's located -ABOVE- on the second floor of 419 NW Broadway. Once you enter the building, it seems abandoned, but once you get upstairs, it transforms into such a sweet lounge area. The space is clean, and very welcoming. The decor adds life and personality, complete with a beautiful, emerald green, velvet couch, tasteful round table, seating, with a nice large, nice quality, wooden, rectangular table space complete with benches, and of course, board games!
We got a few items to try Above GRND out for the first time. The service was spot on. The man who helped us which I assume was the owner, was very attentive, generous, and laid-back.
This is a certainly a specialty spot. There is not a vast variety for the menu, as this only highlights the lattes listed. The banana milk latte SURPRISED me. I don't usually like banana, period, but it was not overpowering at all. It was done very well. There are real dehydrated banana chips, cinnamon, and the espresso shots were STRONG. (All things in which I liked). The other latte, the Mat-chai, was very smooth, and when I asked for a little more matcha, our barista did not disappoint, he delivered!
The Lemon Earl Grey cookie was despicable. It was so moist and melted in your mouth. A very pleasant balance of earl grey for the actual cookie, and lemony goodness for the frosting, with cute, little flower petals on top for aesthetic appeal. My toddlers very much enjoyed the cute tray of strawberry cake. The frosting was smooth, light and airy, and not too sweet. It paired well with the sweet cake. They especially loved that the cake was PINK.
A lot of good things to say, but I will put in: to just make sure to watch your kids if you got em-- because IT IS on the second floor. There are stairs in the front for entry, and a staircase as well in the back near the bathrooms.
Overall 5/5. I'll be back for that banana latte!
