Very cute, cozy, and quiet spot. They don’t have a huge selection of drinks, and the guy who took our order didn’t seem to know much—he seemed new—but he was very nice. They have Wi-Fi and plenty of comfy seating. The café is located up the stairs from a little hangout area with a couch and some arcade games.

Above Grnd turned out to be just what I needed this weekend. I have been in Portland for almost two years now and I am still struggling to find places open late enough. I am a huge fan of coffee shops, but not a fan of mornings. Above Grnd supported my five hour evening study session perfectly. The Early Grey tea was good, though it was just a Stash tea bag. I look forward to trying their signature drinks. Service was fast and friendly. I appreciate the varied seating and amazing WiFi. I have heard a lot of talk about third places, but I think this one is the real deal. I don't normally use the word vibes, but the vibes were on point. The music really pulled it all together. Whether you need to get work done and simply just want to hang out with some friends, this is the perfect place to go for my fellow night owls.

This is a very nice and special place. It's one of the very few late-night coffee shops, which is greatly appreciated. The crowd is young—mostly college-aged—but I'm in my mid-30s and have always felt safe and welcome here, regardless of my age, even if I stand out a little bit. The drinks are absolutely incredible. While drinking, they feel made with true love and passion, yet they do finish your orders super fast, so there's no long wait here. The environment is super clean and beautiful, with plants and local art. There's plently of places to sit and do your work, even reading/studying here is highly recommended as the tables and seating is spread out enough where you will not feel overly crowded or overwhelmed. Honestly, this is by far one of my favorite coffee shops in Portland. It's absolutely worth a visit. Everyone is so kind, too!

Google
Weird location and atmosphere. Coffee spot is on the 2nd level, while the 1st level seems like an abanonded retail space. Staff were NOT friendly at all.

Google
Decent coffee, limited food options, on the second floor of an old retail location. This place has the vibe of a coffee shop where college students go to do some studying. Free WiFi is nice, private parking lot is good. Overall, I’d go here if I was already in the area looking for a decent coffee but probably wouldn’t make this a destination coffee shop in the future.

The place is located inside a shoe shop, part of the loft ( upstairs). The coffee shop plays serene music. It was quiet when I was there. The banana split drink tasted exactly like the dessert. The outlets are located near the wall . The wifi was strong enough. There is a mix of couch seating, tables and high top tables. I would totally visit again since they are the few coffeeshops in the area that open past 3. The restroom could of been in better condition. The canister had empty toliet rolls and only one stall had toliet paper.

Google
Amazing coffee and great customer service! My friends and I ordered the MVP and some of their refreshers, and we were not disappointed. I’d recommend this spot to anyone who enjoys a relaxed area where you can study, hangout with friends, or simply enjoy yummy drinks and take a look at their beautiful shoes that they have for decoration!

Yelp
I'm always looking for new places to study that are relatively calm, inviting and open late (for those late night study sessions). Although this day specifically was not one of those late night study days, I was amazed to see that this coffee shop closes at 11pm everyday!! Definitely one of the reasons I'll be back. As for the actual coffee itself-- it was delish! This coffee shop is small owned by first generation Somali and Muslim immigrants. Their menu also features crafted beverages inspired by their roots. I'll have to try one of those next time. Overall, great experience.

Yelp
I just moved back to Portland with my family, and this is such a gem in the downtown neighborhood. It's located -ABOVE- on the second floor of 419 NW Broadway. Once you enter the building, it seems abandoned, but once you get upstairs, it transforms into such a sweet lounge area. The space is clean, and very welcoming. The decor adds life and personality, complete with a beautiful, emerald green, velvet couch, tasteful round table, seating, with a nice large, nice quality, wooden, rectangular table space complete with benches, and of course, board games! We got a few items to try Above GRND out for the first time. The service was spot on. The man who helped us which I assume was the owner, was very attentive, generous, and laid-back. This is a certainly a specialty spot. There is not a vast variety for the menu, as this only highlights the lattes listed. The banana milk latte SURPRISED me. I don't usually like banana, period, but it was not overpowering at all. It was done very well. There are real dehydrated banana chips, cinnamon, and the espresso shots were STRONG. (All things in which I liked). The other latte, the Mat-chai, was very smooth, and when I asked for a little more matcha, our barista did not disappoint, he delivered! The Lemon Earl Grey cookie was despicable. It was so moist and melted in your mouth. A very pleasant balance of earl grey for the actual cookie, and lemony goodness for the frosting, with cute, little flower petals on top for aesthetic appeal. My toddlers very much enjoyed the cute tray of strawberry cake. The frosting was smooth, light and airy, and not too sweet. It paired well with the sweet cake. They especially loved that the cake was PINK. A lot of good things to say, but I will put in: to just make sure to watch your kids if you got em-- because IT IS on the second floor. There are stairs in the front for entry, and a staircase as well in the back near the bathrooms. Overall 5/5. I'll be back for that banana latte!

Yelp
I really enjoyed Above GRND Coffee as a place to work and study! It is quite hidden and upstairs. The ambiance is great. Super roomy and comfy to hang out with friends also. The service is good too! I ordered a chai drink and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yelp
Above Ground Coffee is such a hidden gem in the heart of Portland, located above a shoe store--just head up the stairs to find it! The place is Somali-owned, and you can tell the owners are incredibly hardworking and dedicated to making this spot special. I visited with my group of friends, and we had a fantastic experience. There's a cozy couch area with a table and a basket full of board games, which makes it the perfect place to relax and hang out. The whole atmosphere is super aesthetically pleasing, making it a great spot for Instagram pictures. I ordered the green refresher, and let me tell you--it tasted like a high-end Dutch Bros drink! It was just as good as it looked. While I'm not a fan of matcha or the banana drink, that's just my personal taste. One of the best parts about Above Ground Coffee is the variety of events they host, like painting nights and game nights. It's a cute place to hang out with friends or even study, though the music can be a bit loud if you need to focus. All in all, it's a must-visit spot in Portland! We also love the support for Palestine

Yelp
I've been hearing nonstop about how good banana milk lattes are, but I've never found a local coffee shop that offers them until now. It was SO much better than I could have anticipated. The barista took such care in making both my latte and my boyfriend's cappuccino, so I knew we were in for a quality coffee before I even tried it. Now I can't get it out of my head. The shop itself also had a fun and cozy ambiance with plenty of seating and some fun games were provided. Seems like a great place to hang out with friends or get some work done.

Yelp
My friend is a friend of the owners and introduced this spot! The cafe is located on top of a sneaker store and I loved the vibes. As a matcha-lover, their Mat-Chai Fusion Latte is REALLY good. It is definitely the top 3 matcha drinks on my list. I would definitely come back to study and try their other drinks and you should too!!!

Yelp
The music, the staff, the mat-chai latte, the VIBES! This place was a great place for my coworkers to meet in a chill environment. It was my first time trying a mat-chai, and I want more! I also tried a tiny bite of their lemon earl grey cookie and YUM. I'm excited to come back here to work remote, to pick up another mat-chai, or just to hang out. They have games and various seating arrangements. I'm not sure if it's an accessible shop though because it is upstairs, but it looks like there's a curbside pick up option? Love to see a Black-, family-owned place thrive!

Yelp
We were a bit confused with the entrance, but don't let the streetwear storefront deteriorate the lovely coffee shop on the second floor! Once up the stairs to your left, we were greeted by Himo and his awesome assistant. The ambiance was nice and we were attended to while seated. The Mocha and Banana Milk Latte were very yummy.

Yelp
Never felt so uncomfortable in my life. The looks these people gave my wife and I made me sick to my stomach. They must not like mixed couples. Horrible, rude, and racist.

Yelp
We love Above GRND coffee!! we've come here for 4+times since it soft opened early this month! the drinks are amazing, our favorite is the mat - chai fusion latte and banana milk! It's perfect place if you need to study and get a late caffeine fix since it opens until 11 everyday. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Just discovered this great place and will definitely be a regular! The second floor space is beautifully decorated and the ambience relaxing. But the best part is the drinks and service. We tried 2 drinks, Mat-chai fusion and the Banana Milk Latte. Both were outstanding - flavorful but not overly sweet. So different from any other coffee house. The owner, Himo, made us feel welcomed.
