Best Places in Bangkok and Phuket for a Sundowner

"This boutique hotel, tucked into a quiet soi in Bangkok's Old Town doesn’t just offer uninterrupted Wat Arun views, but also peaks over the gilded spires of the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Luckily, even non-guests can get in on the Instagrammable vistas at Above Riva rooftop restaurant. Signature cocktails nod towards iconic Thai flavours like the Tom Yum Martini or the Arun Mojito made with ginger and spiced rum. But for the purposes of your visit, go for the fruity Riva Sunset made with vodka, strawberry liqueur, strawberry purée, and lemon juice." - Veronica Inveen

This is a hidden gem. I was surprised that it was so empty considering what a great location it is. We came up just for a quick drink so I can’t comment on the food but the menu did look good. The staff were really nice and friendly. It has great views of Wat Arun across the water and when it’s lit up sometimes reflects in the water too. You can also see a portion of the reclining Buddha temple. This rooftop is a really nice romantic spot for dinner or drinks.

Excellent location with a fantastic view of both Wat Pho and Wat Arun. We stopped by for a cocktail after wandering the nearby markets and this was like a dream Oasis. I would highly recommend coming to the roof top bar here if you are in the mood for drinks with a great view. I can't speak much about the food as we only stopped here for drinks, but our experience was a pleasant one. The staff were friendly and nice.

We went to this restaurant above Riva Arun hotel, after a recommendation from a local. The view is brilliant as it's on the riverside with Wat Arun on the opposite bank. You can take a ferry to the Wat. It's also at a walkable distance from Wat Pho. The service is polite though it takes a while to get the food ready. We went in a large group and everything we ordered was delicious. Portion size is good.

Everything is perfect! Nice view, good vibe and fine taste but poor service. I waited for one dish to another for a long long long time. Please improve training section before all service. Waitress in green dress cannot solve any problem with late order, just said I know and waitress who is a trainee, there is no knowledge about the food.

The staff were amazing and very hospitable. They took care of us well and completed our requests with smiles on their faces. The food was great, it’s 11/10 and I would definitely want to go back again. Everything was cooked to perfection, and the portion size is just the right amount. It’s on the bigger side honestly. The view from the restaurant was fantastic, you can see the temples and the boats on the river.

Above Riva rooftop bar and restaurant in Bangkok offers a decent spot for a relaxed evening, though it’s not a place for those seeking the best views in the city. Located by the river, the view is pleasant, offering a nice glimpse of the Chao Phraya, but it’s far from the breathtaking, panoramic vistas you can find at other rooftop bars in Bangkok. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, not luxurious or fancy, making it a laid-back place to unwind. As for the food, it’s a mixed experience. The Thai dishes are acceptable, but nothing stands out as particularly remarkable. If you’re just looking for something simple to complement the setting, they do the job. On the other hand, the Western options are disappointing, especially considering the price. The steak, in particular, is not recommended—mine arrived cold and lacked the quality you’d expect for the price they charge. The Western dishes overall feel overpriced for what you get, so if you do visit, I would suggest sticking to lighter Thai dishes or snacks. That said, the service is excellent. The staff is friendly, attentive, and eager to ensure you have a good time. Their professionalism definitely adds to the experience and makes up for some of the shortcomings with the food. In summary, Above Riva is a nice place if you’re looking for a relaxed spot to enjoy a casual meal or snack by the river, but don’t expect spectacular views or high-quality Western cuisine. It’s a pleasant place to have a drink, enjoy some Thai food, and take in a quiet evening, but I wouldn’t come here with high expectations for the food or the view.

Stunning restaurant on top of a hotel. Foods are good but the drink menu is limited.

The food wasn’t bad, but the service — especially from a staff member who appeared to be a manager — was the worst I’ve ever experienced. I ordered a dinner set with four dishes, but even after 50 minutes, one item still hadn’t arrived. I asked the staff twice, but received no response. They seemed completely uninterested in our table and focused only on a large group nearby. Eventually, I had to go to the counter myself and speak directly to the manager. Without even a basic apology, she rudely asked if I wanted to cancel the item or take it to go. I was simply asking her to check on a missing dish — after waiting an hour — and was shocked by her attitude. Isn’t it basic courtesy to first apologize and give the customer a proper explanation? In the end, I was so disappointed that I canceled the rest of my order and took the one dish I had waited an hour for as takeout. I had imagined a pleasant dinner while enjoying the night view, but instead I wasted my money and had one of the worst dining experiences ever.
