Austin’s Project Connect Plan Changes to Keep Dirty Martin’s Restaurant - Eater Austin

"It’ll shift the proposed track along Guadalupe away from the businesses and place bike and bus routes on nearby side streets, thus saving Dirty Martin’s, as well as restaurants Mighty Mo’s, Abu Omar Halal, Whataburger, and the Ballroom, per KXAN." - Taylor Tobin

The food and service were excellent! Everything was fresh, beautifully presented, and surprisingly affordable. The staff provided such kind and attentive customer service, which made the experience even better. The only downside is that the atmosphere could be improved, as it doesn’t quite match the quality of the food. Overall, though, I really enjoyed my visit and would definitely recommend it

Google
I ordered from here twice, and both times it was very disappointing. The first time, I asked for no onions, no jalapenos, no olives, but they still sent everything with those. I thought maybe it was a mistake, so I gave them a second chance. The second time I ordered the combo (2 wraps, 2 drinks, 2 desserts). Before ordering, I called the restaurant and explained that I don’t drink soda. The manager suggested replacing drinks with 4–5 pieces of baklava instead. I agreed and then placed my order. In the end, they still sent me 2 sodas, only 2 pieces of baklava, and very small wraps. The wraps were mostly bread, maybe 60% lavash, with very little meat inside. It was so dry that I had to use Chick-fil-A sauce just to finish it. The chicken itself tasted okay and seemed fresh, but the portion was tiny. Usually shawarma is supposed to be big, juicy, and filling. This one was very dry, mostly bread, and I was still hungry after finishing the whole wrap. A proper shawarma should have more meat, fresh veggies, at least some greens. Even if you just google “shawarma,” you’ll see there should be vegetables and greens inside, but here was none. And the biggest problem: the food looks NOTHING like the photos online. The menu shows a big, meaty wrap (see screenshot), but in reality it’s mostly bread with barely any filling. Doesn’t matter if it’s chicken or beef - it’s the same issue. Overall: small portions, dry wraps, promises not kept, and very misleading photos.

Google
The food was absolutely delicious! We visited from San Francisco, and even though we were already full, the flavors were so amazing that we couldn’t resist enjoying more. Truly an outstanding Austin food experience

Google
I've been going to Abu Omar Halal for years, starting with their food truck down the street and now visiting their current location. One of the key indicators of a quality restaurant is its ability to maintain consistency in its offerings, and this restaurant excels at that. Thank you for the great service and fantastic food. I highly recommend it!

Google
We ordered food for takeout and were told to wait 20 minutes. However, we were later asked to wait another 20 minutes. When we finally received our sandwiches, they were nearly empty, and you could actually count the slices of meat on each one. This is unacceptable. We feel cheated out of both our time and money.

Google
Abu Ali Shawarma is a hidden gem in Austin! I tried both the beef and chicken shawarma and honestly, they were incredible – perfectly seasoned, juicy, and packed with flavor. On top of that, the person working there was so kind and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. Definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to often!

Google
Food is always so delicious and filling. These photos do the food no justice. The bowl we got are served with basmati safron rice and veggies. Beef kofta bowl and chicken shawarma bowl are pictured. It’s worth the drive and the wait if there is one. I bring my friends when I come, because they never disappoint. 10/10 would recommend 🙌🏼

Google
Incredible food! Everyone must come here and try. Best restaurant in Austin. 10/10

Yelp
Incredible food. Great quantity and amazing service. This place has been a classic of mine for almost 7 years now. Pro tip: get sriracha fries with white sauce. I wish it were still a menu staple but their loaded fries are incredible.

Yelp
I was walking by and decided to stop by and check out the menu to maybe come back another day. I had just eaten so I wasn't very hungry in the moment. One of the staff members in the window asked if we needed help and we said we were just looking. He then handed us some baklava free of charge to try. Super sweet! I can't wait to return and try their menu out. The baklava was absolutely delicious. Perfect dessert to end our previous meal we had.

Yelp
Great service from the person at the front register! Was Very friendly and kind to my family!

Yelp
This place is definitely not still closed, but damn is it bad. My fiancé took me here because she remembered when it first opened around 5 years ago and how good the quality was, so since we were in the area we figured why not. Even before arriving I knew things weren't looking good when the food truck park is being advertised specifically for "late night" food for presumably nearly black-out college students who wouldn't remember what they ate the next day, but we still pressed on. Behind both the servers there were 4 rotisserie racks, all empty except for 1 which had around 1/8th of dry chicken on it at the veryyyyy bottom. This was weird to me since they must have recently opened or at least had time to begin prepping the various other beef/chicken shawarma dishes... Yet that's all that was visible. I ordered a beef shawarma dish with fries, except to my surprise when it was served it was chicken. And yes; that extremely dry chicken. The dish itself was just crinkle fries and that dry chicken shawarma and the portions were super minimal for the price of $15 a plate (!!!) Just don't go here.

Yelp
Just ordered from uber eats the gyro is ok, and the falafels are so dry. They also forgot to give me a diet coke to wash it down.
google avatar

Sana A.

Yelp
Decent halal cart but super surprised and disappointed when I came home and there wasn't any red sauce! I've never asked for it extra at any halal cart as it's always included so I was pretty bummed out when I came home and discovered it missing.

Abby A.

Yelp
Very nice people and very yummy food!! I always get the falafel over rice and a side of fries. The guy today threw in some baklava too. They're great for a late night meal
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
The Gyros are okay, but these guys are crooks. Not only are they over priced, they won't even give you what you paid for. I ordered a Gyro with fries (two for one) and they deliberately excluded the fries. I ordered via Uber eats, and they didn't even start the order until I arrived. Clearly, they are banking on people not picking up their orders, to line their pockets. However, for those of us, who do pickup, don't expect to get what you paid for. Plainly, they are criminals. Do not order from here. There are better Gyros, for less, from fair dealers.

Yelp
Great Food. Fast service. Delicious food. You'll be happy you stopped by to eat. Tell them Splash sent you.

Maryam Y.

Yelp
best Arab food in Austin coming from a middle eastern woman I love the pickles and the chicken sandwich
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Abo Ommar is a new addition to the UT Campus next to Don. Not a bad food truck and their prices are pretty reasonable. The meat quality is quite decent and I really dig their fries (super fresh and some good seasoning on them). If you get the meat plate (5.50) it's on the smaller side so I would get some side as well. The sauce was dope and the rice/meat are tasty.
google avatar

Daywah S.

Yelp
Definitely recommend their chicken shawarma arabi ask for extra sauce and it's *chefs kiss*. Try them out!
google avatar

Marina A.

Yelp
I gave them a 3 cause I might try some of their gyro or chicken shawarma next time... Anyway...Was really excited to try this place cause I always feel like these food trucks can be gems! Lol I got the falafel sandwich. Which was grilled in what seemed like a wrap tortilla or something, not flat bread. The falafel itself seemed ok, nice crunchy texture. But overall it was pretty bland, I couldn't taste the difference between the pickles, tomatoes or cucumber inside.... ‍ Best thing about it was the "tzaziki" served on the side that had no visible cucumber and tasted more like a bland ranch dressing. DEFINITELY NOT authentic... but not terrible.

Yelp
I can't believe how many times I being missing this place only because I can't find parking spot for my truck . Finally I made it first. The guy there is cool . Friendly he's so happy to to take care you needs when you are hangry. I try the special plate with beef and rice and salad for only $6.50 comes with the drink . Can go grown I want to go back you must try this place ASAP Mediterranean food is delicious . I hope you can find parking near the area . The salsa on top of my meat and salad was unique from others places that I visited in the past Please excuse my bad English typing /:

Patricio L.

Yelp
Call me lee syatt but Jesus Christ this is the worst Mediterranean food I've ever tasted. Probably up there with the worst food too. The beef shawarma was straight up mush. Not even being a Karen but for 16 dollars why are they serving mush with a pathetic salad. Jesus Christ this was just so beyond awful I'd never recommend.

Yelp
Short and sweet. Abu Omar is just okay. The evening I visited the truck, they seemed to be out of half their menu. The menu which has no prices and isn't complete. :/ Also there was only one person working who took large breaks from making food to take orders... slowly even though other people were waiting for their food. Chicken shwarma had a bit of odd texture... likely being overcooked at a low temperature. Also they use a grilled tortilla style bread rather than a pita which was unexpected and not preferred. I didn't hate the wrap but I won't be back either. Every truck isn't for everyone.
google avatar

Natalie D.

Yelp
Delicious food and fast friendly service love it ! I got the falafel rice plate and it's super convenient that they're open so late as well. Def recommend

Nathan A.

Yelp
Been here a few times, really good gyros! Also pretty quick, and they're always been nice to me. Solid truck imo
google avatar

Wayne N.

Yelp
I've passed by this place a ton of times, but I decided today I just wanted a light lunch, so I'd grab something from this food truck. Must say that the ordering process is nice in the sense that the entire menu has a picture, but also very annoying that the price isn't listed anywhere. I decided on a chicken shwarma wrap and it definitely didn't look like any shwarma I've ever had. If anything, it looked like a grilled stuffed burrito from a popular fast food chain, just more oblong. The wrap itself is literally packed to the brim with meat - lots and lots of chicken but a tad bit dry. They have some kind of white sauce with a sour tang in it but I personally didn't like the flavor profile of the sauce. Some random bits of peppers too that I wish were a bit more prevalent to change up the flavor. So ya - nothing too special, but could be serviceable in a pinch - at the least its open late.

Natasha M.

Yelp
!!BEST SHAWARMA YOULL EVER EAT!! YOU WONT REGRET THIS. Friendly faces, awesome food, great campus! You can eat great shawarmas, shawarma plates, falafel, etc. and it's WALKING DISTANCE from campus. I try something new every time I go ...so good.
google avatar

Kareem A.

Yelp
When I got there, I looked at the menu and was about to order a Chicken Shawarma. Prices were not displayed hence I asked how much it cost to make it a combo with fries, the staff said $11.99. Taken aback but hungry, I ordered one. The taste of the meal was above average but not worth the price at all. Especially when I received it, I asked if the combo came with a drink and was told no. The lack of transparency in pricing and straight price gouging should keep anyone away from that truck, even as a last recourse.

Azaan J.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a couple years since they're about a buck cheaper and a block closer than Halal bros. This year, the prices have been raised, the food quality has decreased, I haven't seen them making fresh shawarma on the roller grills in the back like they used to, and worst of all, instead of the red sauce that they used to use, and that every other shawarma place uses, they gave me sriracha. Also just an FYI to the owner, the link you post in your replies is not clickable, and yelp does not allow us to copy the link.

Luca T.

Yelp
Food [4/5] - This is a pretty solid halal food truck with some fairly unique dishes. I almost always opt for the Zinger Arabi, which is a shwarma with some sort of fried (I think) chicken inside and sides of fries and pickled veggies. The white sauce that comes with the shwarmas is delicious as well. Service [2/5] - Personally, I love this place but the main thing holding it back is the time it takes to prepare the food. I won't even bother going without phoning my order in, and their "15 minute" wait time extends to 25-30 minutes most of the time. I've come to expect it, but for someone who doesn't, it makes for a poor service experience. Value [3/5] - The dishes aren't the biggest or the cheapest (see Halal Guys a few doors down), but the meals do satisfy with their greasy, food truck-y goodness.

Mubeen A.

Yelp
I have been eating Abu Omar for years now, and where ever you eat it, the taste and the quality is the same. The guys who work there, are great and respectful.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Truly bummed about this experience. Ordered on Uber Eats. 30 min delivery time turned into an hour and 10 mins. The food had one request/modification and it wasn't delivered. The service was terrible.
google avatar

José Luis V.

Yelp
The food was delicious, quick, and plenty. Definitely one of the BEST shawarma we've ever had. Adrian, the attendant was calm, cool, and collected as an influx of people arrived. He also explained to us the difference in types of food. 10/10 would recommend as a must. Chicken Shawarma Arabi
google avatar

April C.

Yelp
Best falafel in town!! I love the falafel arabi wrap. The guys are sooo nice too! Late hours are super convenient for late study nights on campus.

Reagan A.

Yelp
Best Halal Food is amazing and customer service was 10/10 and super friendly. Great food and environment couldn't ask for more!

Audi M.

Yelp
Ive been here couple times and although my experience with them has been positive and negative but i will say since Sam start working here this place is definitely five start and if i could put ten i would. The Italian shawerma is great, zinger is awesome and he always cook it fresh. The customer service is great and I highly recommend this place and highly recommend to ask for Sam. Thanks Sam for turning abu omar halal for great experience!
google avatar

Neha K.

Yelp
ive come here so many times during these past 5 years and i have absolutely loved the people as well as the food here. this past time, the employee here was extremely rude and dismissive and was the only reason i took off a star, but solely because of my numerous previous experiences here this is still one of my favorite spots in austin. the employee working today, however, is making the brand look very bad.
google avatar

robert s.

Yelp
Went today to get a chicken with rice and he wasn't open by 12 PM so I got the chicken schwarma. The guy added his own tip and had me sign it. I stopped for a moment knowing the dinky chicken schwarma wasn't $10. The guy added his own tip.

Moh A.

Yelp
Disrespectful stuff. Poor customer service. The hours not accurate. First and last time going to this location. The other location way better. The food truck should be open until 3:00AM but 2:15 AM one of the stuff told me we are close and he close the window!!! In a rude way!!! They deleted my Facebook comments to cover up!! Thank you Yelp to be honest!!
google avatar

Nour L.

Yelp
This place is legit and as close to authentic Arabic street shawarma as I've seen !

Lonzo B.

Yelp
Great customer service and the food is amazing I love the chicken arabi I will definitely come back here!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
So here is the deal. I like their food. I'm pretty sure they have trucks in houston also and I eat at the one in Katy when I'm in town. The food here is good to, at least the couple of times I've had it, and service at the window is good. The issue I had, is I was trying to order conveniently through what I guess is Grub Hub (whatever service you order through yelp.) and something screwed up and they never got the order, then they messed up the order because they didn't have a physical ticket or write it down after I showed it to them. So now, what should have taken a half hour tops round trip is up to an hour and a half now. I haven't been offered anything for the inconvenience and of course grub hub is screwed up and has no one manning their phones. Eat here, never use grub hub ever. Update: just got home and they also messed up the order. Their menu on yelp/grubhub and favor say that a side order of falafel is 2 patties. I ordered 3 orders, they only gave me 3 patties instead of 6. Hope they see this and offer to make it up to me

Osama A.

Yelp
Worse place to eat ever, price is too high comparing to the taste, customer service is the worst. people work there are so rude like they giving the food for free

Suly G.

Yelp
Seems as though its a college area, they can be careless about customer service. There is too many options in the area to deal with snuggy food traillers.

T M.

Yelp
If you haven't been here yet, I suggest you go now! We tried several items here & all had so much flavor, and were absolutely delicious. The food cart itself was clean, and the area around it was delightful and clean as well. The gentleman working there greeted us with a warm smile and went out of his way to get us what we wanted. Now back to the food! We were pleasantly satisfied! We tried the Chicken Shawarma, the Chicken Zinger Arabi, as well as the Chicken Zinger Wrap. Everything was amazing, as well as the fries they came with. Would definitely recommend.
google avatar

Menelike D.

Yelp
Great little food truck near the UT campus! I had a shwarma with French fries...really tasty sauce. I'm a true believer that middle eastern places know how to make the best French fries and this place can attest to that.

Salim D.

Yelp
After paying more for online pickup order and receiving a message that the order is ready, we come for pickup to realise no one has started working on the order. They rushed and provided very poor quality meal.
google avatar

Soham R.

Yelp
Had the chicken shawarma arabi with fries - it would have tasted better if it were made more spicy.

Laith V.

Yelp
I do not recommend this place at all. They are very rude and not respectful. I wish I can give them ZERO star. Very disappointed. The worst experience ever!
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Went because dons was closed and ordered the $5 chicken and gyro rice. I don't understand why you would ever go here instead of Halal Bros. For $8 there you get twice as much rice and meats, and it comes with a nice serving of veggies. The quality and flavor of the meats there is also exponentially better and enough for two meals. Here for $5 you get some dried crusty pieces of chicken and gyro. One extra star because customer service was good.
google avatar

Hailah F.

Yelp
Service changedddd, food quality is bad now...no more yummy shawerma, sucks. Plus Now I never get my order right and for the past few months now they have been out of beef shawerma on Uber.

John S.

Yelp
Food taste horrible , no customer care, i wouldn't recommend this place at all. Bye
google avatar

Kate G.

Yelp
The service here was quick and friendly, and the food was wonderful. Even though it's all very decadent and flavorful, the meals dont make you feel heavy or gross afterwards. This is one of my favorite halal places in Austin thus far!
google avatar

Eileen M.

Yelp
I went to this food truck for the first time not knowing what to expect and I was so surprised by how good their food was and how nice the young man running the kitchen was, I had to write about it. I ordered their gyro and fries. He was very polite and was patient with me while I decided what to order. Telling him this was my first time, he loaded up my gyro with so much meat and other ingredients, I was blown away. You just don't get this nowadays. The fries were perfectly cooked and he even gave me extra taziki sauce without charging me to dip the fries in. Very good experience and I will go there next time I am in the area!
google avatar

Big M.

Yelp
Great food, out standing service. We tried the beef kabob and the chicken shawarma arabi.. the beef Kano was juicy and the shawarma on point.. rice and salad we amazing

Chetan M.

Yelp
Amazing food. Loved the taste... Super quality, great quantity and can't beat the price. I took Falafal plate with rice and my wife Chicken Wrap...Both these dishes were super good !! Must visit !
