"This small nation on the west coast of Africa is a popular spot for bird-watching with more than 600 bird species, many of them migratory. The Gambia River, lined with mangroves, is a habitat for pelicans, terns, and elusive species like the African blue flycatcher and Pel’s fishing owl. The Abuko Nature Reserve is home to a rich variety of bird life."
Beautiful peaceful place. Some animals can be seen in their natural environment but you are not guaranteed to see everything as they are free to roam. We had a guide that was very helpful and friendly and at a good price. Staff were not pushy at all and were friendly. Like everywhere in the Gambia you need to negotiate and know what's reasonable. Be prepared to walk but enjoy it.

We quickly realized when arriving in Gambia that Abuko is a nature reserve that isn't running well because of financial reasons. Entry fee was extremely low.
We ran out of time to fully experience the entire reserve so we've only seen a part of it. The hike through the park was serene and quite beautiful.
The animal cages are basic and that part looks rundown. We hope the park gets the attention it deserves because the place has a lot of potential to be something much better than it is in its current state.

Abuko is an amazing nature reserve with two types of monkeys in rehabilitation orphanage! So many amazing bird species to be spotted around the park! Highly recommended for families and nature lovers!

It is a beautiful place but you can tell that the government has not been spending money to care for it. Our guide was very helpful and seeing the animals was interesting. I’d recommend going

It’s a pretty impressive place, still a shadow of what it used to be. It has monkeys, crocs, hyenas, snakes etc. A perfect place for birdwatchers and for an afternoon with family. The footpaths are beautiful and impressive art is sold around the hyena cages.

It was fun while at the reserve. They have a tour guard and the Gambian Police had a station close by and offer you their binoculars for 100 dalasi. The reserve has a rich history but doesn't have a lot of wildlife.
It was fun seeing the monkeys play in their natural habitat and jumping over a pool filled with crocodiles. Seeing the hyenas also was fun. I heard their is MOU that another reserve will bring some of its wildlife to the reserve. If this happens then it will be great.

A reserve but the highlight are the nursery of the animals that they rescue
The rest of the park is nice to see birds .

A really beautiful reserve that does really important conservation work.
Do rent binoculars and do get a guide to take you round. Make sure you ask lots of questions, once our guide gave up on his set schpeel his passion for his work shone through.
The reserve includes one of the last patches of Gambian rainforest. Gambian rainforests are different because the water comes from the ground. Stepping into this section was like stepping into a shower it was so much cooler.
Monkeys followed us round but we're polite enough not to steal any snacks.
