Atlanta’s Best, Underrated Hidden Gem Restaurants | Eater Atlanta

"Stepping inside this black-walled, creaky-floored frequent host of comedy, poetry, music, and “late-night shenanigans,” you might dismiss it as a dive bar with dive food. Don’t. The flavor bombs on the menu are as serious as the venue isn’t. Drinks are craft (try the bourbon-spiked Apple Pie or the Black Walnut Old Fashioned) with snacks like Brussels sprouts with melty feta and sesame seeds, loaded totchos with housemade ranch, a Korean-style footlong corndog topped with garlic mayo, scallion, and togarashi, and a truly great burger." - Beth McKibben

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Academy Bar in Alpharetta, GA, and it was a delightful experience! On a bustling Friday night when the downtown area was alive with energy, this cozy neighborhood bar offered a welcoming escape. We chose to sit outside, soaking in the warm weather while enjoying some refreshing cold drafts and delicious pineapple mimosas. The atmosphere was perfect for unwinding after a long week. To complement our drinks, we ordered the Brussels sprouts and fries as appetizers. Both were tasty and made for a great pairing with our beverages. The casual vibe of the bar made it easy to relax and enjoy the evening. Our server Emma was great One thing to keep in mind is that parking can be a bit tricky in the city, but it's definitely worth the effort to find a spot. Overall, the Academy Bar is a fantastic little spot that captures the essence of a neighborhood bar. I can't wait to return!

A newly opened bar with a pleasant ambiance and live music. We enjoyed a few drinks and appetizers. The cocktails were well-made and tasted great. We plan to try their entrées next time and will update the review accordingly.

We tried this for trivia last night and enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The acoustics for trivia needed to be louder and the font was really small on the screen to read the questions, but we made it work. The bar burger was very good and the Korean chicken sandwich was good too. My husband tried the Korean bbq wings and would try a different flavor next time. I got the club sandwich and didn't like the remoulade sauce that was on it. If I got it again I would just get mayo. The menu is interesting with an elevated bar feel. I like that it is a laid back atmosphere with several tvs.the griddled donut with ice cream and magic shell was a hit. Everyone enjoyed it.

I had an amazing experience at Academy Bar this past Saturday night! The atmosphere was lively, energetic, and exactly what you want for a great night out. My bartender, Kelsey, was truly outstanding — not only friendly and fast, but also incredibly knowledgeable about drinks. She has a real talent for crafting perfectly balanced cocktails and can even whip up delicious non-alcoholic drinks that feel just as special. Even with the bar packed, Kelsey kept everything moving smoothly, all while taking the time to chat, make recommendations, and make every guest feel welcome. Her attention to detail and passion for her craft really set the tone for the night. The music, crowd, and overall vibe made for an unforgettable evening. If you’re looking for great drinks, amazing service, and a bartender who knows her stuff inside and out, Academy Bar with Kelsey behind the bar is the place to be!

Ever been to a bar where the bar tender makes it her job not to serve you? Thats academy bar. Weirdest experience ive ever had trying to get a drink. Took my ID, card, and order, stared at it for 30 seconds, handed it back and the left the bar.??? Then to add to it, no other bar tender came over to that side of the bar until we gave up and left. Might’ve been the weirdest bar experience I’ve ever had. Good DJ tho!

In general I've had good experiences at this place but the girl bartender last night wearing a cowboy hat was one of the most miserable humans I've ever interacted with. Multiple people around us were like who the hell pissed in her cheerios. As someone who managed bars in college I couldn't imagine having someone like that represent my establishment.

The staff was real friendly especially when closing up for the night. The atmosphere feels like they did the bare minimum, the music was extremely loud, and drinks weren’t mixed well when I went. Cheap dive bar food. Not a fan you would think they would have something a bit nicer in Alpharetta - this place belongs in a college town like Athens.

We came to Academy Bar to have a drink before meeting friends . We sat outside and were enjoying their live music, so we decided to stay and have dinner. I’m so glad we did. The food was delicious! I had the mahi fish sandwich and my husband had the Korean chicken sandwich. We also had pretzel bites for an appetizer. We enjoyed everything. The portions were generous and the prices were very reasonable. Our server, Kat, was so friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
I think it's my new downtown spot to grab a drink. Tried a fresh take on a drink -- Blonde negroni. Nice! Bar food was good -- wings, pretzel bites, sweet potato fries. The real draw is the atmosphere and the casual ambiance of the whole thing. Not big, not small -- just a nice, tidy little place. Got there when it opened and was well taken care of: friendly, helpful, courteous. Thursday is open mic and people rarely participate, which is great idea you aren't into the noise.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I popped in here on a really hot day around 6:00 pm and there was no one in there. There was live music (she was really good) so we were a little confused why it was empty, thinking there had to be a reason. After being there, there only reason had to be that maybe we were there too early and this place usually gets more traction at night time because it's more of a cocktail bar vibe? Because the food was INCREDIBLE like seriously everything we got was top tier. My personal favorite was the pretzel bites but the sweet potato fries were a close second. The servers were great and all so personable. This might be our new go to spot!
