So I really want to give Acapulco's more stars. I've been to the restaurant for dine-in a few times before, and the food is always good, even if the service can be a bit hit-or-miss from time to time. But due to the COVID-19 restrictions, this time I opted for take-out, and Acapulco's needs to work on their take-out game a bit. For starters, the restaurant gave me the wrong order when I came to pick it up.
I didn't notice it was the wrong order until I'd already gotten back home, and I accept some blame for being too hungry/lazy to drive back down to the restaurant and get the right meal. I ordered the Enchiladas Jalisco and what I got was a combo plate with a spinach and cheese enchilada, a tostada with beef, and a beef chimichanga, along with rice and refried beans. It did smell really good, even if the takeout plate looked less-than-appetizing (see photo). I wish the restaurant had separated the beans and rice into a separate container--when you order a meal for sit-down service in the restaurant, the beans and rice come on a separate plate--and that would have kept everything from getting all mushed together. But I'm not one to judge a book by its cover, so I dug in.
There were high points and low points. We'll start with the bad. The tostada (granted, I wouldn't have ordered it) was not good. The beef was really dry and the crispy taco shell got all mushy in the different sauces that blended together on the plate. And the rice was super-dry and clumpy, and it lacked flavor, so after one bite I just ignored it, which said a lot because I was super-hungry.
But there were some high points. The spinach and cheese enchilada was delicious! The filling was very flavorful and the sauce had a nice tanginess to it that I really appreciated. The chimichanga was good, too. The shell was a little bit tough, but the filling inside was very tasty with just a tiny hint of spice. It went well with the tomato sauce that was served on top of it--a good combination. It's not something I would have ordered initially, but I was impressed enough with it that I would order one on my next visit. For me, though, the star of the show was the refried beans. They were exceptional! The flavor was very deep and rich, they had that an unctuous, almost velvety texture that I loved, and the cheese on top was the perfect complement. Top notch refried beans!
So, overall there were certain parts of my meal that were good, but others that left a lot to be desired. And I know this is takeout, so there's a lot of leeway on presentation, but that plate just doesn't look appetizing. But don't let this review stop you from checking out Acapulco's. The food is good, as a general rule, and the ambiance in the restaurant is a lot of fun. It has a festive vibe! So I'd recommend either waiting until you can dine in to visit, or being prepared for a less-than-stellar-but-still-OK-overall takeout experience.
