The 24 Essential Restaurants in Salvador, Brazil

"Don’t leave Salvador without tasting acarajés, the city’s famous street food. Wads of crushed black-eyed peas are deep-fried in dendê palm oil until golden, then split in half and stuffed with flavorful, spicy pastes of dried shrimp, onions, and cilantro. The acarajés come in a variety of spice levels, but be cautious with your first order. In Bahia, “hot” means really hot." - Rafael Tonon

The flagship of this restaurant is arroz de polvo com camarão (rice, squid rings and shrimp). The place isn't cozy but when you feel all the recipe's taste you'll understand why this meal is made by angels. Try it and you won't regret.

Google
Good Acarajé street food. The shrimp paste and the little shrimps are tasty. You can sit at the tables for the bar right next to it and eat there.

Yelp
Good sample of some of the local cuisine, I went once late night and once around 4pm, it was quick both times, easy enough to order and you can't sit nearby on the benches and eat. Careful the shrimp doesn't call off your sandwich as it tends to be packed k the top and you have to distribute it around with your mouth or else you've eaten al the shrimp first and by the time you get to the rest of it there is no seafood left. They've got some other cow body parts I didn't try, overall this was worth the taste, low frills and simple but they're apparently the best in town, and like 13 rials for one.

Yelp
I'm a bit split with my review - the food is fine - I've visited the place numerous times. Problem though is the personnel working the stand - treatment of (foreign) customers can be a bit odd - be prepared to pay more than locals which leaves a questionable after taste. There's other Acara stands in this area ... besides 50ft away is a great Tapioca Crepe stand, just saying. PS this place has two ID's on Yelp, see here, the same but with wrong street address: https://www.yelp.com/review_share/1JwoijLAG2105nScn_R0JA/review/1pyQDvqsUJBYLlPdwT8JFw

Yelp
One of my favorite places to get an acarajé, after work or on weekends. Lively atmosphere with lots of locals at tables enjoying cervejas and snacks in a super locale.

Yelp
Get it with muito muito pimenta!!!! There are many great spots for acaraje and abara in Salvador and I have been lucky enough to have been taken to many different spots in different neighborhoods. For acaraje, this is the best.
