Best Dive Bars in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill | Eater Carolinas

"Nestled in a strip of local spots on Geer St., including LouElla (a wine bar) and Welcome Tattoo (obviously a tattoo shop), Accordion Club exists. It’s dark and cozy inside, but there’s also a sizeable patio out back with string lights and picnic tables for those who don’t want to get lost inside. The beer menu features a solid list of local and domestic beers, and locals will be the first to say they go out of the way for Sunday morning Hatch burritos. The Frito pie and hot dogs make for excellent drunk snacks to sop up all the liquids." - Jenn Rice

A great atmosphere to hang out with your friends! I love the outdoor area in the back as well. Got to try the snacks the bar carries last night and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Our hot dogs were rad and you can also get frito bags topped with nacho cheese, pimento cheese, and/or other toppings like chili. We really enjoyed the snacks and our drinks! Also, every time I come here I hear Parquet Courts on the playlist, which is very cool.

Has a dive-bar vibe, in all the right ways. Dark and comfy inside, with the long bar spanning nearly the entire space. There's a couple TVs, but nobody pays attention. A great draught beer selection as well as the standard cocktails. They sell hot dogs w/chili and cheese sauce, too, which is a fun gimmick. The secret of this place is the hidden back patio. Go out the back door, down the stairs, and there are 6 - 8 picnic tables with string lights above. Plenty of room to chill out when the weather is nice. Note that smoking is permitted in that area, so plan accordingly.

The area around Geer St and Rigsbee might be changing but it's such a relief that this bar has stayed the same. This deepcuts Durham spot is the best. I have always loved this downtown gem. It's a chill bar. More on the lines of divey. I give it 5 stars for being what it is, a great dive bar, without any of the grime. If you want a fancy mixology cocktail bar, adjust your expectations. Love the vibe here, love the patio. And, sometimes, you'll see swarms of tiny bats swirl ahead. It's sweet, it's chill, it's a good bar.

The memories as an OG Durmite here will forever be burned in my soul as mostly full of joy and comradery. However, you let sketchy people who do heinous things into the business for the sake of inclusion, and a man assaulted me in the back patio. Bring back the bouncer, these vagrants have no place in Durham. I love Accordion 🖤

Google
Simply the best. The beer is flowing. The good vibes are vibing. The hot dogs are spinning. Long live Accordion.

Google
A cozy little bar, friendly staff, wonderful atmosphere, kids loved the chilly + hot dogs, and learned to play pool :-)

First and last time going. We had family in from Texas, and went to boxcar - had a great time. One of the employees recommended this bar because they stayed open later. We walked in, and were like oh this a great dive bar by the look of it and how many patrons were at the bar. We sat at the bar, and had contact with a bartender (we later found out from security that she was “hungover”) who was extremely rude, and dismissive. She was much warmer with others at the bar, possibly because they were regulars but even getting a beer from her was like pulling teeth because she could barely even face us when we were talking to her. The body language was horrible, and so was her energy. There was even a point where she threw the cash change back down in front of one of our family members, and I was in disbelief. Looking over my bank transactions and realized the waitress also wrote herself in a tip even though I didn’t tip and crossed out the tip on the slip. Definitely never coming back, and don’t recommend.

Great service. Best margarita!

Yelp
Come here a couple times for drinks only. It's definitely a hole in the wall with lots of character. The drinks are really good and the bartenders are very quick and attentive. It feels very homey inside because everyone seems to know everyone. They also sell hotdogs that my friends swear by but I've never had them. I need to go hungry and thirsty one day. They make a mean vodka soda and I love it!

Yelp
It's my favorite dive bar ever. Bartenders are nice and attentive. Drinks are reasonable. I can't believe this place is in gentrified downtown Durham. Totally wonderful in a grimy, divey way. And don't forget to take a selfie in the bathroom.

Yelp
I worked many years in food and beverage, love a dive bar and especially one who welcomes all. I really liked The Accordion Club on a previous visit. But I have never been treated so poorly by a bartender. Sadly, the poor dude probably enjoyed the flex.
google avatar

Cathy C.

Yelp
I was a tad tipsy while visiting so here we go. Friday night at midnight, you walk into a casual bar after a party with 90's hip hop playing, people are laughing, good vibes all around. Definitely a great place to hang after a party.

Yelp
You'll like or not like this place depending on how you feel about dive bars. If that's not your scene, you probably won't like it. If you like a bar with colorful characters, cheap beer, a pool table, and some food offerings, you'll enjoy this place. It's grown quite a following and is open late to accommodate service workers. Unfortunately, we did not get great service when we popped in on the 4th of July (mainly since they were donating tips to charity). I stood at the bar with a $20 bill in my hand and several of the bartenders ignored me and served others. Didn't even get acknowledgment from the incoming or outgoing bartenders. One arrived and proceeded to chat with the other staff and not tend to any customers. Finally, another staff person arrived and took our simple order of two draft beers. We went to the back patio, which was nice on a Sunny evening. Be forewarned, however, that smokers congregate at the patio. We might be back but hope for better service next time. Maybe we'll order one of their famous hatch chili burritos to go on a Sunday morning.
google avatar

Yelp
Low key bar with great breakfast burritos! You order them on their Instagram page between Friday night and Saturday at midnight and they are worth the hype

Yelp
Accordion Club is a fun place to be at. I always meet interesting people there. I didn't realize they have an expansive backyard!
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
This dive bar was a fun time to grab a drink at. They also serve a few food options which seemed to be popular but we only grabbed drinks. If you are in Downtown Durham, check out this spot.

Yelp
A few friends introduced me to Accordian, and my life will never be the same. Ok, maybe it will, but it proved to be an amazing experience. Friendly staff, dive bar atmosphere, and unique food makes this place stand-out. Ironic though because the place is hidden with no obvious signage that would let you know of its existence. That being said, make the effort to find it and experience Accordian if you are in the Motorco area. My buddies ordered for me and totally steered me in the right direction. I had the Frito Pie with spicy chili. Picture an opened bag of Fritos topped with oozing nacho cheese and spicy green chili. OMG! Next was the hot dog with the same spicy green chili. Again magnificent. You get the pattern...that spicy green chili kicks ass. The only drawback here is the one small restroom in the back. It's a bit dodgy. Dont let that stop you from checking out this hidden gem.

Yelp
Still, hands down, the best bar in town. Breakfast burritos are on point, plenty of dogs, cocktails on tap are delicious, and the owners are fantastic humans. What more could you ask for?
google avatar

Yelp
This little hole in the wall is worth venturing into. We stopped in during our Bull City Laughs bus tour on a Wednesday evening. Quick potty stop. It was clean and squat-worthy. Some had drinks poured and served swiftly. I event left with an awesome walking taco for only $4! Delish and spicy as warned. While the food menu is limited a full bar is available with extensive drink menu.
google avatar

Mani N.

Yelp
Perfect Sunday snack! And so delish...hot dog with hatch green chili and cheeseis a must, great spice and yummy
google avatar

Erica R.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Not only is this a top notch dive bar hidden on the end cap of a really cute strip, but they have the best pimento cheese hotdogs!! Do yourself a favor and get the hotdog!
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I literally stumbled upon this place walking back to our car from Motorco as it has no sign outside. There was just an "open" sign in the window and I thought, "huh?, didn't that used to be a Latino grocery store?" So we stopped in and discovered a fantastic little bar! There are some video games in the front and a large t.v. in the back. We sat down at the bar and the bartender greeted us and was super friendly. He told us all about the space and their plans to open a kitchen and expand. They have a very good drink selection at excellent prices (Seeing Double for $4...that's dangerous). We didn't try any of the food (they had hotdogs and green chile stew) but it looked delicious. Friendly staff, good & cheap food and drink, and great location-- I'm almost nervous to write a review for fear that this place will start to be another super-crowded bar on Rigsbee.
google avatar

Meilinn T.

Yelp
Being from NM, I have not found a single place to buy legitament NM food. The owner is from Santa Fe and welcomes you to frio pies, green chile stew and green chile burritos! On Sundays, they have the NM happy meal which includes a green chile burrito, a miller hi-life, a double shot of tequila, a chile back, and a toy!
google avatar

Sara J.

Yelp
This place is great. Awesome staff, chill atmosphere and great food/beer options. The food is delicious, get both Chili's (Christmas style) on your dog or Frito bag. Draw a masterpiece for the hot dog wrapper gallery. Play some pool and relax. It's a nice break from the larger spaces down the street to sit back and relax in a nice cozy bar.
google avatar

Nikki M.

Yelp
This place is super divey, but I like it. Bartenders are knowledge, affable and pretty cool. The drink menu has everything from super cheap domestics to complicated cocktails that need explanations. The best parts: The Happy Meal (Miller Highlife, shot of house tequila [LunaAzúl, NICE!], pepper water chaser, lime and a toy [a sticker]) and it's the best thing I've ever purchased in a bar. Also, breakfast burritos are available on Sundays. Hotdogs and nachos are served up with New Mexican hatch chillies, too. I really like this place.

Yelp
The place for after hours to hang out have a good drink Prosecco Rose a on tap my favorite great hot dogs kimchi green chile stew bags of Cheetos

Yelp
I work/have worked in the service industry for close to 20 years, and was told accordion club was the place to go. Even though I was at the bar for almost 10 minutes & it was dead, I was ignored. I just wasn't a priority to the bartender I guess? My partner & I tried to order together but two drinks seemed too much for the person behind the bar who was way too busy and interested and his friends conversation than making money and doing his job. I don't get what's up with these bars in Durham that offer terrible service and get great reviews. I really don't.

Yelp
Welcome to the neighborhood, Accordion Club! If I had an accordion to play to celebrate the addition of this bar to Durham I would definitely play it! It is great to have another option for drinks in the Geer street area, and this bar is exactly what it was advertised to be--a great little neighborhood hang out spot. In fact, when we went here we sat next to this man who has lived in Durham a while and we ended up chatting with him the whole night! So this bar definitely brought together some Durham people for the first time, over a pretty good selection of local beers in a nice, laid back atmosphere. I thought the beers might be a little more affordable since I heard this was supposed to be a cheaper bar option in the area, but the beer prices are pretty on par with other places in the neighborhood. The bar itself is long and narrow but there is a pool table and two old school arcade game tables so you can also battle on some pacman while you sip on those local beers which is a feature that I love. They have a full bar here also, so if you aren't a beer person there are drink options. And they sell hot dogs and chili that looked pretty good and were a nice affordable bar food option and I saw one person slurp up the chili he ordered, so it must be good!
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
Great beer, hotdogs, Pac Man...The Accordion Club almost has it all. The only thing missing is more outdoor space, but I hear that's coming. Right now, there's just a picnic table by the front door, and it's been claimed every time I've been there. Speaking of the facade, I love that The AC is so unassuming, you wouldn't know it's there unless you know it's there. And speaking of folks who know it's there, I always see at least one friend or neighbor when I go. People I actually like go to The Accordion Club! And the folks I don't know? They've been nice, too.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
Accordion Club is a nice neighborhood dive bar. It is a good addition to the Rigsbee area as it is a more chill hang out than nearby staples like Motorco and Surf Club so it aims for a different niche. They also offer beers that you can buy to go which is a great addition. I mean c'mon, I know I'm not the only one where often the next step after I stop somewhere for a pint is buying a 6-pack to take home with me, so it's nice you can do it all in one stop. They also have New Mexico-style hatch green chili which is a fantastic addition. To be fair I haven't tried it yet (I had just eaten when I went in, I won't make that mistake again), but I'm a fan and love they have that on the menu. It does what it sets out to do well. Offer you a nice little hole in the wall to relax and have a cold one.

Yelp
Digging this new place! Durham needs more "dives"...and this one hits that mark. The green chile stew is the damn bomb...and hot (spicy) as hell, so make sure you get the sour cream and Fritos with it.....even the hotdog with chili, cheese, and onions was good. Give this place a few years to get that worn in patina going, it's going to be a Durham staple....with a ton of personality.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow. When i read the article in Indyweek a little while back about a new joint in Durham that was serving Frito-pies and hot dogs i knew i'd have to check it out. Thankfully i find myself here today enjoying what i consider a Chicago streetside favorite, with more options and great shelf of beers.
google avatar

Immanuel J.

Yelp
They should probably change their name to The Accordian Bar. I scheduled a working lunch with a fella primarily because it was walking distance from my office. When we arrived, we were told that the hotdog maker was broke so no hotdogs were available. . Ok, "So, What else do you have for lunch?", I asked. "Chips, beer and some other stuff". We elected to get a beer, which was very good-I might add. I tried this chocolately beer which had a rather high alcohol content. Whew! I felt that. Honestly, I had the wrong expectations. I knew it was a bar but I thought we could grab some substantial food to go with it.
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
Great bar, good folks! Only serve Will Greene root beer please, because I love him.
google avatar

Liam M.

Yelp
Terrible service terrible drinks the bartender is rude I wouldn't serve my dog the food they gave me. Even the water I got served tasted worse than my lukewarm tap water from the bottom of my sink. Awful environment crowded and over priced. The bartender couldn't make a good mixed drink for his life. I wouldn't even trust the bottles of liquor they serve I was one "frito pie" from calling the health department
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
This is the best neighborhood bar in town. If you're looking for a dance floor or you want to 'be seen', this is probably not going to fit. But if you know what you like to drink, appreciate good bartenders, or absolutely need a Frito pie before heading home, this is the place.
google avatar

Terra L.

Yelp
New Mexican here. This is the closest thing to legit NM food I've found in NC. The atmosphere is laid back and the staff is friendly. I went to get my green chili stew fix right after they opened and I see that their menu has expanded. Can't wait to try out the new stuff!
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
No frills bar, which is a good thing! Has a good beer selection, including to-go beers. Also had pool and a couple of arcade games. Relaxed place to hang out with a couple of friend or for a date.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
Comfortable Dive bar atmosphere with great hot dogs, bag of Fritos with various add-ons like nacho cheese and shoot cream, and delicious Green Chile Stew.. perfect stop for late night drinking on Geer street. Good variety of beers and laid back atmosphere. Pool table and sit down pac-man machines. The owner, Scott, is fantastic and makes a welcoming environment. Absolutely worth stopping in for a beer or five.
google avatar

Chelsea R.

Yelp
Love Accordian Club. Great beer list, tasty hot dogs and chili, friendly staff. A very comfortable and inviting bar.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
We came here after having over priced beers at a new local establishment. I fell in love as soon as we walked in! Shabby meets practical-beers to go- and a great selection! Have some nagging pangs of hunger? They have hot dogs, chili Fritos, and just plain chili-for omnis and herbs alike! Love the bartending staff and have heard they're building an outside drinking/dining area!
google avatar

Jbear F.

Yelp
Great music, good selection of craft beers and hot dogs and other stuff. Good atmosphere. But the best thing was the excellent green chili stew, nice and spicy.
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
Beer's cheap. Bar's not loud. Hot dogs are good. The bartenders are nice people who serve alcohol punctually. This is a bar. Don't come here for trivia.
google avatar

Dustin D.

Yelp
Just discovered this place. Love it! Little whole in the wall. You'd miss it if you didn't know it was there. Good beer, good hot dogs, great atmosphere. May be my new go-to spot. I've also heard a lot of good things about their green chili.
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
Great new place in Durm. Adam was amazing proving information on this new bar explaining expansion plans and the background on the owner as well as ingredient info on the green chili stew which is deeeeeeeelicious!

Rjc P.

Yelp
Love this little hole in the wall place and yes the dogs are good!!!!!!!! Nice friendly service making it a place to go back too in the future!!!!!

John U.

Yelp
Cool little local neighborhood joint. Don't blink or you might miss it. No real visable outdoor sign except for "open". The two owners are very friendly and welcoming. Any place that sells a good chili dog is a hit in my book. Their drink prices are good as are the pours. My only criticism, ditch the mustard and ketchup packets for some plastic bottles.

Michael R.

Yelp
I'm reluctant to give them a good rating because I don't want it to get crowded. Durham is becoming expensive. Bars serving cocktails for $10-15 is ridiculous. Not here, a good selection of beers and spirits, reasonably priced. You hungry, eat a hotdog and Frito pie, play some Galaga or MS Pac man. Bartenders are cool and the brunette with the big glasses is super cute. So enjoy and keep the bar cool by not being a jerk.

Ayra A.

Yelp
UNCOMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT. When taking one picture of my friends and our drinks in the open outdoor area, a "friend of Scott, the owner," as she explained, told me to turn off my flash because it was too bright. Although we were in the outdoor space behind the building, I tried to understand that yes, maybe my iPhone flash was too bright for her. I can understand. Then I hear the same woman complaining about another customer and saying "she will tell her friend Scott who is the owner" about it. Who is this woman and what are her standards for complaints to "tell Scott, the owner" about every minor issue? Additionally, when three of our group of five left to get more drinks, an employee told me that the three should've taken all of their cups and empty cans to the bar. None of us were told of this expectation by any employee or sign posted anywhere in the establishment. So, the remaining two of us were shamed that our friends did not automatically know to take all of our empty cans and drinks up the stairs and to the bar. Note that we had purchased a round of shots and 2 beers each and kept to ourselves. My group felt uncomfortable the whole time and do NOT want to go back.

Samantha R.

Yelp
Great little dive bar.. cheap drinks friendly staff & offer some drunk munchie food!! Try a chili back
