The 8 Best Restaurants in Taos, New Mexico | Eater

"On the road up to Taos Ski Valley, Aceq is tucked away from the cluster of shops on the main road, where it dishes out classics like chicken and waffles and fish and chips, but also some more ambitious plates, like a duck foie gras torchon and bacon-wrapped dates. The owner’s Wisconsin roots are to credit for the highly recommended beer-battered cheese curds. [$$]" - Justin De La Rosa

An incredible dining experience with excellent service and ambience in Arroyo Seco. This is now one of my favorites restaurants… The Wangus Steak is probably the best beef flavor in a steak that I’ve ever had—rich, deep, and earthy. It’s the type of steak which actually it feels like a crime to eat with sauce. The cocktails are excellent (and strong!!), with the Cadillac Margarita and the House Old Fashioned being highlights. Every plate was beautifully designed and it seems like the staff really cares about delivering an excellent meal. The price is absolutely worth it, and being from Ann Arbor where this meal would have cost about 2X this much, I left grateful.

Google
We try to eat here every time we are in Taos (1-2 times per year). Last night was the best ever. We had the brussel sprouts, birria egg rolls and wangus pomme frites. All amazing! Service is great but not fast - relax and enjoy it!

Wonderful little place! The drinks, food and staff were exceptional! Wish we lived closer to frequent this great restaurant!

Google
We reserved a table, unknowingly, for the day before the menu changed from Winter to Spring; a few of the items on the menu were out of stock like the Cod and Scallops. I ended up getting the Beef Bourguignon. It was very well seasoned, and you could smell the wine in the bourguignon sauce. The meat was a bit dry, in my opinion, and it had more carrots than potatoes and mushrooms. Overall, I really enjoyed this dish. The rich and savory bourguignon is so amazing.

Google
Are you kidding?! This place is off the charts terrific. Worth the price. And I love that we can pay homage to the chefs by ringing the gong—which we did heartily! We had the wagyu beef and the duck and pasta. Also shared an amazing roasted Romaine Caesar salad and grand marnier crème brûlée.

A small hidden gem, in Arroyo Secco. They food here makes you feel happy. Outstanding!

Google
ACEQ is absolutely incredible. From the menu to the food itself, and everything in between - we were blown away. We cannot wait to get back. Tonight we ordered the Meatloaf (special), Pasta, Bison Bone Barrow, and Brussels Sprouts. All amongst our favorite we’ve ever had anywhere. 10/10 will be back.

Google
This is THE place to go for a great experience. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed my time here. I left uncomfortably full, but it was worth it. The service was outstanding. Our waiter was friendly and informative. The vibe of the place was awesome. Decorations were great and the open window view brought everything together. The food was some of the most visually pleasing I've seen. The flavors were off the charts and the menu selection made me wand two stomachs. It was a bit pricey, but I'd gladly pay whatever they ask in order to recreate the experience I had here.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place more stars! For a Tuesday it was packed and some items ran out but to me, THATS a sign of wonderfulness. Great ambiance and even greater bartender! The chefs get a full blown chefs kiss! Definitely a fave and can't wait to come back when I'm in town again!

Yelp
My parents and I went after skiing and they were super sweet and accommodated us, even though they had reservations for the evening. It's a small space but beautiful decorated. The fire outside is pretty and so warm when waiting for your table. I loved being able to see the kitchen and all the wonderful dishes being plated. This was my first experience going to this restaurant. And the customer service was superb. Our waitress answered all of our questions and took care of us through throughout our time there. We ordered the grilled Caesar salad and the marinated tomatoes on top where delicious. For my main I got the tiger shrimp pasta, which had spicy sausage and olives, I wouldn't think of those items are going together, but it was well balanced. My parents ordered the special which was baby scallops, steak and vegetables and they enjoyed how well the steak was cooked, my mom was a little sad that the baby scallops were like a pea size, but we're also in Taos, New Mexico, not near the sea so It's to be understood. Over all the dish was so good and no one took home leftovers. We will definitely be back. I want to try more things on the menu .

Yelp
Not as wowed this time around. I feel like this place has turned way too bougie since even the last time I was here which was roughly two years ago. Came back again intending on having dinner with my boyfriend while on vacation. Now, mind you, this place was originally on the show 'Diners drive ins and Dives' and proudly boasted Guy Fieri's face or signature was somewhere on their wall. There's no trace of ever knowing that left in the place and I think they had it removed. It was packed beyond belief. Which, I guess is a good thing for business but it was a lot more chill and relaxed and less uptight than the night we went on. I felt hounded every few minutes to order something. Was even reminded a few times that the very last steak was available. While it was fine and excellent service, it was a bit uncomfortable. The menu has changed to an upscale fine dining selection. I didn't come here for trendy fads like Korean Corn ribs and bone marrow. Entrees were around $40 for soba noodles or scallops. $30 for a stuffed portobello. What about a burger? No wonder the steaks were running out for the night. Beer had gone up a bit in price. Which I could understand if it was an imported selection but most of everything was from the New Mexico area. Needless to say, I'm disappointed it changed from a cute owl themed dive where I can get a beer or cocktail and potentially maybe a fancy burger to a place where it would cost me like $150 to get a drink and meal because they want a Michelin star. Maybe I'm in the minority on this one but I didn't go on vacation to be met with literally what I left behind in New York City.

Yelp
We stopped by here for some drinks and appetizers after hearing a lot of good things about it. This place was very clean had a nice vibe and staff was really helpful. They suggested the Bison Bone Marrow appetizer and we also ordered the Bacon Wrapped Dates and the Jalapeno Bistro Fries. Everything was really good and were gone quickly. Really cool place. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is it is really pricy for the portion sizes and the Bistro Fries were a bit greasy. We would definitely stop in again.

Yelp
The place was very small, but intimate. We were a party of six and were seated at a huge table for eight. The owner/server was great. The steaks were very flavorful and tender! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious, beautiful, innovative food and drinks. The service is also freely warm and friendly. In my most recent visit to Arroyo Seco I was seen peeking in the window during off hours to see if a menu was posted as was warmly invited in and given a paper menu to take with me by a staff member. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place. The food was creative, the cocktails are good, the pricing is appropriate, and the service was on point. I liked the atmosphere in the restaurant, the music is good to hear and adds a fun vibe to things. I would say this is a place for people who want a good meal, at a fair price, and want to get some of the Apres Ski vibes without heading all the way back to Taos. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
As a Taos local, this restaurant is a favorite!! The food, ambiance, and service here is exceptional...A must try while visiting or simply dining out for a special outing with your loved one and/or friends!

Yelp
Elevated, rustic and definitely a SEXYFOOD experience. We had a beautiful time in this small town gem in Arroyo Seco, service was attentive and loved the vibe here. We had 4 appetizers.... elote corn ribs that resembled "Pulpo... pretty clever and tasty, German meatballs that were mouthwatering, delicious bacon dates and lovely beet salad. I had their sea bass special which was absolutely divine.... I still dream of it, explosive flavors indeed. We finished with a night cap of their refreshing Key Lime pie. The only complaint I have is they do not serve any caffeine :( Overall masterful creative dishes and worth every Benjamin spent. The Sexyfood experience dream come true. Ciao

Yelp
Pleasant atmosphere, warm and friendly service, fine fare! When friends visit they always ask to return to Aceq.

Yelp
We had brunch here with family. The atmosphere, couple with amazing staff made it hard to even want anything but this type of business. The Wagun beef had me addicted and the drinks were total perfection. This will be a yearly trip and we can't wait to return!

Yelp
Food was outstanding, service was personal and so friendly, it's a great find in Arroyo Seco! If you can try their beef (we had ribeye and sirloin) - it's outstanding. You will not regret eating here. The cocktails are exceptional and great wine options. We will be back

Yelp
Came here on a ski trip with my family. It was seriously the best meal I've had all year. Not only were the entrees amazing, but every single appetizer was delicious as well. Perfect cook on the steak, and the best truffle fries I've ever had. Small restaurant and very popular, so I'd recommend a reservation. If you're in the area, definitely make it a priority to stop by one night!

Yelp
Let me preface that I've been in the food industry for 40+ years. I usually check reviews before going out. I should have listened to what the 1 star reviews were saying. Farm to table? No. This was food off the back of a truck. Decently plated Sysco food. Not farm to table. You can fancy up food off a truck as much as you want and industry folk will still taste it after 40 years of eating it. Japanese cocktails? I lived in Japan for 15 years spent a lot of time in high end cocktail bars. Another no from me here. Unbalanced and overpowering flavors for $16. Half that price would have been almost acceptable for what was served to us. If I'm paying $16+ for a cocktail it better be from a mixologist that knows what they're doing. Music was far too loud and I was forced to hear a young and arrogant owners take on why I was wrong about my opinion. I'd be shocked if this owner was over 30. I've seen these mistakes time and time again. The other table next to us had the same complaint. We yelled at each other from 2 feet away to hear it. Charging this much for sub-par food put some damned sound dampening in this tiny room you're trying to host in. The prices are outrageous for what was served. People leaving 5 star reviews are lying to themselves to feel better about spending 5 star prices on 1 star food and service. I was excited to try this place based on the good reviews. I'm upset with myself for not listening to the bad ones. There's far more truth in the 1 star reviews than the 5 stars here.

Yelp
Wonderfully creative menu. Great service! Really enjoyed the corn ribs, bok choy with apricots, and the Wangus dishes. Appreciated the Kids Menu.

Nitya K.

Yelp
Came here on our last night in Taos and wow-what a gem. Amazing service, food, and drinks. They do not rush you, which is something we appreciate. Our server gave top notch drink and food recommendations, and they were very flexible with making substitutions. We ended up trying the Wangus steak and it was possibly one of our favorite meals of all time. Could not have asked for a better way to end our stay. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Because of some of the negative reviews, I came close to cancelling my reservation with ACEQ. I depend on reviews when considering a restaurant that is new to me. I realize that there will always be negative reviews as a means of revenge. I'm glad I disregarded the negative reviews. ACEQ was excellent in all aspects and a wonderful dining experience. I had read that the steak was tough and virtually inedible. I actually asked our server, Brad, about this and he refuted the claim. My steak was perfectly cooked, tender and delicious. The mashed potatoes were excellent, as was the asparagus. My wife had the yaki soba and loved it. The key lime pie was delicious. Brad even treated us to a dessert made from his grandmother's recipe. Oh, the mescal "margarita" was enjoyable. You will love the setting of the building and the interior. Arroyo Seco is an interesting and unusual small community. We will definitely return when in the Taos area. Thanks Brad!!!

Yelp
First time this season visiting ASEQ. I love this place. That staff are awesome. Let's talk food and drinks. The house cocktails are amazing. Every food dish was perfect. I had the 6oz steak. O
google avatar

Barfa S.

Yelp
The service was friendly and helpful. The cocktail was delicious. The food, however, was disappointing for the price point. The duck was overly salty and the filet mignon was as tough as a cheap grocery store bottom round. Nothing about it was exceptional. As much as we paid I can't say I'm willing to give it a second chance aside from maybe just cocktails and small bites.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Ate here a year ago and was absolutely blown away. Went back a week ago and could not have been more disappointed. Food was ok but it wasn't great (except for the clafouti, which was inedible). Also, from where I was sitting I could see into the kitchen and one of the line cooks was eating in the kitchen - not tasting something to see if it was ok but standing at his station with a plate full of food, shoveling it away. WTF? For the prices they charge I fully expect to be blown away, or at the very least impressed. Emailed the restaurant to ask if they'd changed management or gotten a new chef and never heard back from them. I won't go back and I'll also steer my friends away.

Yelp
Wonderful mixed grill dinner! Flavors were amazing and the lamb chop & steak strip were perfect. Our server Amanda made a special effort to make sure our dinner was exceptional.
google avatar

Yelp
My table shared the corn ribs, brussel sprouts, seafood fettuccini, and eggplant dishes and they were all incredible! Our server was wonderful and able to make all sorts of accommodations for a member of our party with some food allergies. Just a great experience, highly recommend making a reservation if you're in the area.

Yelp
I was wandering the streets on a Wednesday evening trying to find something to eat. On this particular Wednesday everything was shut down for the night except for ACEQ! It was hoppin! I walked in to place a to-go order and the awesome hostess helped me place the order for my cordon blue sandwich. After ordering I saw a buddy at the bar and grabbed a seat while I waited. The bartender made an pretty solid boulevardier and he let some other patrons know that his margaritas are the best in town, I wasn't able to verify that bit but the boulevardier was good. The bar was great and I met a few folks from all over our lovely country. My food showed up and it was time to head out, it took some effort to pay but I was able to close out and move on my way. I ate the sandwich at home and it was GREAT! Well balanced and the spread they used on the bread hit the spot. The place may be a little pricy but the food was good!

Yelp
Wonderful dinner and server Magnus (sp)? Dinner delish and wine superb love the vibe and the atmosphere

Yelp
What a gem! This place was recommended to me by my daughter and I am so glad we made a reservation. Jenn and Madeline tag teamed and served us. They were attentive and very friendly. Our dinner was absolutely delicious and the cocktails were creative and strong. It's a bit of a drive if you are staying in Taos near the plaza but worthy of the drive. Highly recommend it.

B B.

Yelp
This place is a gem! First off, our server, Amanda, was the best! She was attentive without being overwhelming, gave us advice on hiking when we asked for it and was just all around a lovely human! The food! Corn ribs are my new thing and omg they are so tasty here! My wife ordered the steak that is a combo of Angus and wagu and it was melt in your mouth delicious! The cocktail I had was a perfect balance of lime, mezcal and bitters. We are just so glad we randomly chose this place!!

Yelp
**OPENS AT 5PM** *RESERVATIONS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED* Elevated American food Excellent customer service. Everyone has an exceptional attitude and eye for detail. Beautiful place, perfect for a date. Menu always evolving due to the owner's vision of an eclectic -and interesting worldview to food. We could not decide on the wine so we got both of the ones suggested One white one red, wonderful choices. Our 8oz filet mignon was cooked to perfection but came out a bit cold, but we were so hungry we didn't even care and I'm positive they would have warmed it up if we'd ask. Loved everything and would literally eat whatever they served me because it's top quality and VERY well done. Looking forward to returning and checking out the new menu! Enjoy!

Susie B.

Yelp
Amazing dinner for our first night in Ski Valley! The service was definitely slow but we were not in a hurry so it was no bother. Our waiter was friendly and very helpful with our decisions. My cocktail was the Golden Hour and it was lovely! We shared the corn ribs and the eggplant apps, both amazing! The corn is 1000% worth the messy hands. I had the duck entree and my husband had the beef & risotto stuffed portobello. The flavors were incredible & everything was cooked to perfection! We were very full so we ordered the peanut butter pie to go and enjoyed it as a late night indulgence. Highly recommend a trip 20 min down the mountain to Arroyo Seco for a great meal!

Yelp
Heard good things about this restaurant. Stopped by around 5 before it opened and was told by the owner not to worry about a reservation. When we got to the restaurant at 7, there were only two spots at the bar. I ordered the Bison Frites, and my wife got an Asian noodle dish. The craft cocktails were good and our waiter (the bartender) was ok. Our meal was bad. My wife's noodles were barely half cooked. My fries were under the heat lamp, in plain sight five feet away from me for 10 minutes. When they tried to finally serve them, I objected and asked for a fresh entree. When they reserved my meal there was ZERO meat. This was a $100 disappointment.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Don't order the specials unless you ask for the price! I got charged $62 for a very chewy, gristly mediocre "wangus" steak that was 1/2" thick, and described as an incredible steak. Besides, it came with two little sprigs of broccolini and I can't remember what else, (potatoes?) but the description was so fancy and what I got was so paltry and not good. We won't be returning, it's just not a good value and not good quality. Or, maybe try the Korean lamb chops those looked interesting. Try Medly's hangar steak frites for $29 it's consistently awesome. Also, the steak frites appetizer at Martyrs steakhouse was fantastic. I ordered a $42 New York steak at martyr's and it was 1.5" thick and nicely grilled--worth it.
google avatar

Bonnie D.

Yelp
Outstanding service and food. Great cocktails and chef personalized our experience by allowing us to select menu options and serve family style. Perfect way to celebrate our friends anniversary.

Susan F.

Yelp
Amazing food and very attentive staff. Drink menu is influenced by Japanese ingredients. We enjoyed a lovely dinner!
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
I usually don't rave about restaurants that only have one or two vegetarian options. But the few veg dishes they had were outstanding. For appetizers, we ordered the lettuce wraps and Brussels sprouts without the cheese and bacon. Both were good, but they didn't compare to the entrees. My husband asked that the portabella be made vegetarian. He could not stop raving about the mole sauce. I had the vegan polenta. Without exaggeration, it was the best polenta that I've ever had. The coconut curry sauce was rich and delicious, and the roasted cashews rounded out the dish perfectly. The staff was professional and helpful. The dining room was decorated with paintings by local artists. Overall, it was a great meal with lovely atmosphere. We will definitely return.

Yelp
Had a phenomenal and fun dinner last night at Aceq!!! Perfect dirty martinis, fries, salmon ( best I have ever had in any restaurant ever-thank goodness I brought home leftovers! Otherwise, I would be dreaming about it!), bouillabaisse!!! GO!!!

Hannah M.

Yelp
Aceq was okay, but for the price I was hoping for great! The ambiance and art inside was awesome and the waitstaff was good, but I didn't love the food. I had chicken and waffles and the waffle was so dense and dry I could not eat it. I would have much preferred and ego waffle. The chicken was good but essentially just a normal chicken tender. I also had the duck which was extremely tough and dry (maybe that's just duck?). At the end of the night it was a fun experience inside the restaurant but the food was mid and came at a hefty price!

Kate G.

Yelp
Ordered the special..the steak...did not ask price because prices on menu were in the $30's. Got the bill... $138.00 for 2 specials...who does that!?!? Been in the service industry for many years. You should tell your costumers. So leaving tonight...the bill was $320.00 for 2
google avatar

Sally S.

Yelp
Madi was an amazing server - she oriented us to the wine and menu and checked in on us often. The food and ambiance was exceptional. We enjoyed the drinks and charcuterie board very much. The art and music added to the delight. We will be back!
google avatar

Alpha P.

Yelp
Most Over-rated Restaurant in Taos County The service here is beyond embarrassing. It felt like we waited 30 minutes before anyone even came to our table and then another 30 minutes before we got our food. I've never waited so long for a plate of chili-cheese fries. Yes, they were busy, but we went to a restaurant in Santa Fe, the following night, Paper Dosa, that had a line around the block of customers waiting for a table and they brought us water right away when we were seated and asked if we wanted any other drinks or starters. They also brought out our food within 10-15 minutes of ordering. The atmosphere in ACEQ is no bueno as well. There was techno music blasting in our ears the entire time we were there... really bad techno music. Also, we were seated next to the front entrance and could smell the dumpster just outside the door. While the food tasted good, it's nothing special. The menu items are more confusion than fusion, and highly-overpriced. I will never return. Take your business across the street to the Sol Cafe or Wake & Take.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
The service was great. The atmosphere was a fun, lively vibe. Definitely a great place to enjoy an excellent meal in the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains. I would give 4.5 stars but that's not possible on yelp :( I started with a whiskey basil, which was a nice balance of bourbon and citrus. I'm not a fan of sweet cocktails and this one hit the mark being slightly whiskey forward but leveled with the other flavors. The roasted beet and quinoa salad was excellent. The goat cheese bites are the perfect savory counterpart to the sweet roasted beets and golden raisins. (Sorry, didn't think to get a pic until after) I choose the special which was priced high at $71 alone but was a very delicious New Mexico 10oz "Wangus" Ribeye, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. I also opted for the surf-and-turf and added 3 scallops with a heirloom tomato chutney. Paired with the recommend Syrah and the meal was a great way to end the evening.
google avatar

Madelaine R.

Yelp
On a peaceful snowy evening in October, there was a pinion fire out in the courtyard. The ambience inside and outside are quite fine. I had lamb chops with a Tzatziki sauce. Lamb meat cooked perfectly and the sauce was a perfect complement in taste. My spouse had the Wangus steak special, sublime in very way. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the Taos area. It feels like a local spot!

Allison B.

Yelp
The service was fantastic. The hostess was so friendly and stopped by to say hi throughout our meal. Our server, Charlie, was amazing. We wanted to be his friend by the end of the night. The drinks and the food were awesome. The portobello dish and the duck dish were top rate.

Jill F.

Yelp
This is a nice place for this town, however when we ordered a strip steak for dinner (which was the special), they charged us $72. Which was twice what any other item was. No, they did not display the price anywhere prior to ordering it. This is a casual place, not necessarily high end so it was a bit shocking.

Alexandria M.

Yelp
A must visit if you are in the Taos area. Everything we ordered was incredible - from cocktails to food. We ordered the birria egg rolls to start with the veracruzana salad. For entrees, we split the arroz con puerco and the lamb. The salad was refreshing as expected, and the two entrees were out of this world. The pork belly was so tender and the corn and rice bed had so much flavor. The corn with the lamb entree was probably some of the best corn on the cob I've ever had. The chocolate mole was the perfect addition to the lamb lollipops. I would not order the egg rolls again as there wasn't anything that stood out about them, especially in comparison to the entrees. Don't skip this place when you're in town!

Steve P.

Yelp
Love this place. Amazing food and friendly service. The fish and meat selections are very special. Good wine and fun local service. Worth a visit if you are in the Taos area!

Genady L.

Yelp
Very good and original dishes. Expensive though and "suggested" tips are just crazy, don't know since when 30% is considered normal...

Isaac P.

Yelp
Ignore all the 1 star Reviews because this place is Flipping Bomb! Delicious is an understatement. The staff was kind and attentive, and even though they were slammed, they took care of us and even apologized a few times. but honestly it didn't matter because the food was THAT GOOD. We ordered the Lamb Chop Appetizer from their Daily Special along with arguably the best steak taco I've ever had (being from San Diego I am critical. But HOLY COW. The Bison Stew was something special, and the Bison Fries were decadent af. Some of the best ways I've ever eaten that beautiful animal. The Mexican Coke & Sprite showed me that these people care about what you're putting into your body beyond the beautiful and creative Farm to Table Food. Forget about masks and covid and all that stuff. These people make you feel like family. and even then the Wangus Burgers were something out of a storybook, cooked to perfection, juicy yet with a nice char, I even got an egg on mine and their buns were toasted to perfection and sucked up the yoke and the juice in a masterful way. We tried the Sage Shrimp Fettuccine and it was so good that my brother wouldn't share it with anyone but I stole a bite when he went to the loo. If you're still reading this... you probably wanna hear about the dessert cuz it was Dank (slang for Delicious;) . We broke into the bread pudding which was not only moist, but flavorful and well composed. But the Mixed Berry Cheesecake was fluffy and flavorful, served with a mixed berry compote that was robustly sweet & sour and meshed perfectly with all the cheesecakeyness ACEQ had to offer. Also shoutout to Dasha for making our dining experience extra special We'll be back tomorrow to try the rest of this ridiculously awesome menu and soak up all the good vibes and SMILES this place has to offer

Ben G.

Yelp
Food was good but way overpriced. We made a reservation but still had to wait to get seated. The only thing on the menu that wasn't exorbitantly expensive was the chicken sandwich, which took 2 hours to come out cold. Robbed of our entire night and money. Should have just made our way to Taos. Not worth going here. The 6 ounce steak special cost $56, just don't go here.
google avatar

Jo G.

Yelp
we ate at a lot of great places in Taos but for me this was the best. it's a cozy smallish space with a lot of character. The menu is not overwhelmingly large and well thought out so that everybody could find something delicious. The second night we went back for just a glass of wine and got to chat with the owner who is insanely young to be owning a restaurant he must have been born for this hard work because what is clear is that he manages well. All of his staff love him and want to work hard for him including wait staff and chef. I will definitely go back to ACEQ every time I'm in town.

Yelp
we had to dine here TWICE on our stay as it was that good. The Brussel sprouts were the star of the show, a long with the peanut butter gnash dessert we had after. We will deff be back again when we are in town traveling.
