Downtown Coffee Roaster Expanding to East Village - Eater San Diego

"Cortez Hill roastery Achilles Coffee Roasters is adding to its downtown footprint with another cafe headed to the East Village’s Petco Park-adjacent Park 12 development, which is shaping up to be a serious hospitality hub; Holy Matcha recently launched in the mixed-use building and Carmelita’s, a popular Orange County Mexican eatery, will land there soon. The new Achilles cafe is due this summer; owner and head roaster Chad Bell says he’s planning to be open by July. Bell moved to San Diego from San Francisco in 2014, and in 2015 took over the mobile Roast Coach coffee carts from original proprietor Salpi Sleiman, who went on to open North Park’s Holsem Coffee. In 2016, Bell founded Achilles’ roasting facility and first cafe on Ash Street in Cortez Hill, which produces a dozen different roasts named after local neighborhoods and landmarks, from San Ysidro to Swami’s and Sunset Cliffs. The next year, Bell opened an all-outdoor cafe at the base of The Rey building at 800 B Street. The 1,200-square-foot cafe at Park 12 will have more seating than any of Achilles’ other outposts, longer operating hours, and a larger retail section. Besides its core menu of coffee drinks and pour overs, it will also offer a substantial breakfast and lunch menu. After the East Village branch opens, Bell says he’ll look to open one more location in the downtown area." - Candice Woo

Google
Another outstanding coffee! Visiting San Diego for Comic-Con and found this gem. Wonderful. Great staff and nice coffee. My wife had ab almond diamond which is sort a like an almond croissant but not. It was OK. Overall great place.

Google
I’ve been searching everywhere for a coffee that lives up to the standard of Australian coffee culture—and I finally found it here. The latte was smooth, well-balanced, and had that rich, velvety texture that’s so hard to come by outside of Australia. You can tell they know what they’re doing with the beans and milk. Friendly service and cozy vibe sealed the deal. Highly recommend if you’re picky about your coffee like I

Google
I loved the breakfast burrito & vanilla latte so much I came back the next day and got the same thing! I got soyrizo in the burrito and it was amazing! They serve it with some delicious salsa! The seating outside is cute and it didn’t take long for our food and coffee to come out 😊 Highly recommend!

Google
The coffee and food here is great! I was in town for a conference and came here multiple days for my morning coffee and breakfast. Would highly recommend.

Google
Ordered take out and really enjoyed it! Pictured are the Aztec Cold Brew and the Harbor Island sandwich - look at the cheese! So good!

Google
Nice roast and very nice flavour profile Limited seating inside but also have some space outside on their patio Great roasts that don’t leave that lingering espresso taste for long. People I was with had food and said it was tasty and hit the spot Barista was great and let me look at the entire menu without rushing. See they have a nice wide selection of pourover brews as well A nice quiet location especially on a Sunday morning too. Great job overall!

Google
This hidden gem boasts authentic charm and seriously smooth espresso. ☕ Their Cortado was perfection - expertly pulled with a rich, velvety texture. 👌 Service was lightning fast and super friendly, exactly what I needed for a quick afternoon pick-me-up. 🙌 Don't miss this local treasure!

Google
The staff was rude and unwelcoming. Customer service doesn’t seem to be a top priority at this location. Wanted to simply purchase an uncooked bagel + cream cheese. The lady working this morning said it would take 15 minutes to get my bagel out since the kitchen is backed up. Appreciated her honesty, I asked if I could just purchase the two cream cheeses she said that would take 15 minutes, almost making it seem like she didn’t want me to purchase. I simply left. If you’re looking for better bagels, GREAT customer service I would recommend Spill the Beans on market instead.

Yelp
When work brings me to the San Diego Convention Center, one of my favorite perks is getting to swing by Achilles Coffee in the Gaslamp District. This spot has quickly become my go-to for breakfast and a much-needed caffeine fix to kickstart the day. In fact, I just stopped by today and got The Warrior Breakfast, which comes with fluffy scrambled eggs mixed with cheese, a stack of three mini pancakes drizzled with a syrup that's absolutely delicious, creamy smashed avocado, and a choice between bacon or cranberry sausage. The perfect fuel for a busy day I had ahead, complemented of course by a beautifully crafted latte. I'm already looking forward to my visit tomorrow to try their breakfast burrito. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area!

Yelp
Awful delivery experience. 1 hr 14 mins. Coffee missing steamed milk and 2 not warm sandwiches. Never again.

Yelp
I was walking by when I saw this cute coffee shop and decided to grab a morning coffee. It was definitely a bit of a mistake. The line moved at a snails pace and it took me maybe 30 minutes to just order and still took time to get my coffee. I honestly don't know why their system is poor but it definitely needs to be adjusted. The person taking orders was also doing the pour over coffee and then there was one person doing espresso's and one prepping the drinks. I enjoyed the latte I got but not enough to ever wait in this line again. I was maybe the 5th party in line and no joke, 30 minutes to just order. The coffee definitely didn't taste as good once I got it 40-45 minutes later.

Yelp
It's a cute shop with good coffee. I tried the nitro, and it was good and quite strong, not the best ive had but ok. The pour over is delicious, and they have a few varieties and descriptions to help you pick. I'm sure you can't go wrong with any though The food was only ok. The breakfast burrito spinach tortilla was like a neon green. There wasn't much flavor, so the salsa that comes on the side is much needed. The salsa has a nice flavor and a little kick. I added smoked salmon on the side for $4 and got a miniscule slice, but I guess that's pretty much in line with prices around here. Definitely come for the pour over coffee. Maybe get it to go and get food elsewhere

Yelp
Achilles Coffee is located in the Gaslamp on the corner of 4th and J Streets. We stopped by for coffee one morning to give it a shot. They were somewhat busy inside but it was cold outside so no one was using the outdoor seating. I really wanted this place to be my new go to coffee in the Gaslamp given their positive reviews but the coffee I received tasted burnt and I could not taste any of the cinnamon or honey that was supposedly in it. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I don't think we would go back or recommend them.

Yelp
The pour over coffee was spot on. The Encinitas sandwich is awesome, I really enjoy Achilles Coffee

Yelp
This place is great. It is a little small inside so there is limited seating. They have a few extra tables outside. Coffee is very smooth and presentation is lovely. Breakfast sandwiches are great but a little messy. They also have free WiFi
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped at Achilles Coffee to grab a coffee before heading over to the convention center. I thought the coffee was pretty good, but the location was hard to find. Prices were fair and service was friendly and nice.

Yelp
Great place to get coffee and food! Lots of options to choose from and vegetarian chorizo was great along with helpful service. Nice ambiance as well.

Good F.

Yelp
Poor attitude by grumpy servers. Too bad, coffee is decent. Reflection of their owner or just poor hires?

Yelp
such a cute and yummy cafe! i was visiting the convention center and this cafe was nearby! the drinks were so delicious that i kept going back every day of my conference. the park west was also such a delicious sandwich, the chipotle aoli that in the egg sandwich made it taste so flavorful! def recommend this place for a quick pit stop!

Yelp
What a cutie little coffee shop! I am visiting from out of town and stumbled here with my fiancé on our morning walk while exploring the gas lamp district. Music was absolutely amazing - indie hip hop which I was surprised to hear first thing in the morning but I loved it. The floor to ceiling windows added a lot of beautiful natural light. Service is impeccable - the server was kind and helpful with making my selection for tea. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Grabbed a quick breakfast here on a Friday morning. Staff are friendly. There are a handful of indoor and outdoor seats. I paired a vanilla latte w/ the Pt Lima toast, which consisted of two over medium eggs, avocado & arugula on multigrain toast. Food and drinks were delicious, but it was kind of pricey, a little over $20 w/ tip, but seems to be the average now a days with inflation. Side note- street parking available nearby and free before 10am!

Yelp
we were downtown and my daughter wanted an Acai bowl.. I found this place on Yelp and sent the hubby out for our lunch orders. My daughter will generally not eat on dance competition days because of nerves.... Acai's bowls are one thing that doesn't upset her stomach on these days and I can get her to take a few bites. Well on this particular day she ate almost the entire bowl (compliments to the chef). She even asked where we got it and that she would like to go again. I am guessing we will be back next time we're at the convention center.

Yelp
The service is great and ambiance is very nice, all the windows really light up the place, but the best thing is the amazing latte art hehe. they also have a great selection of pour-over coffees that I plan to try one by one. will always be coming back :D

Sadia S.

Yelp
I'm a little bit of a brat when it comes to coffee, but this spot's coffee beans are quality. So, so good. The barista made my drink exactly how I like it, but even more important is that I could taste the quality and flavor of the beans. Barista was amazing and very friendly. Come here!
google avatar

Yelp
Really yummy coffee and bagel. The staff was super nice and the place was cute. Not a ton of seating and the seats are tiny but overall cute for a little snack, breakfast or coffee.

Yelp
Hands down THE BEST BREAKFAST BURRITO I have ever had. Not even kidding. I'm obsessed! You can also get it as a bowl if you don't want the tortilla. The side of salsa has a nice kick to it as well. Lots of great coffee options....drip too Clean, friendly, and free dog treats!
google avatar

Yelp
I went to this location twice. Once to grab a pour-over (Golden Hills) and the second time to go with the wife. I had another pour-over (Swami's) and a breakfast burrito. The burrito was one of the best I've had in recent memory. Fresh, piping hot, picture perfect and delicious. I'm a fan of big chunks of hot potato and the burrito itself was weighty and flavorful. To help cool it down, you can get a chilled salsa to put it on top so you don't burn the roof of your mouth and it is attention to details like that make all the difference in the food experience. I have a healthy respect for the brand now and will be keeping an eye out for them om the future if I want to do a grab and go.

Yelp
Cool specialty coffee spot serving organic roasts from around the world... I stopped by Achilles Coffee Roasters on a Saturday for my morning caffeine fix and a quick breakfast. There was a bustling neighborhood vibe and the entire staff was friendly and upbeat. My café americano checked was smooth and flavorful, which is how I judge any coffee shop. It checked all the boxes! Achilles also offers a selection of breakfast and lunch options, so I'd recommend it if you're looking for a low key meal at a reasonable price. Keeping to my usual, I ordered the oats which are served with walnuts, dates, fresh fruit and granola (which was unfortunately out of stock). I'd give the oats 3 out of 5 stars, primarily because they use quick oats and the consistency was a little too mushy. They tasted great nonetheless. I saw a lot of other people ordering great-looking breakfast sandwiches which are clearly the more popular option. Overall, I'd recommend Achilles to any coffee fan. If you're in San Diego, check them out!

Yelp
Yummy hot chocolate and sandwich. Love the pretzel bun. Turkey was missing, but the line got really long and I didn't have time to ask them to fix it. Conveniently located near many hotels and only a quick walk from the convention center. Nice causal setting.

Maria M.

Yelp
Everything tasted great here! The staff were very nice and made our food fast! Good vibes for hanging out to grab a bite with anyone. Pretty pricey, but this is normal for this area.

Yelp
Achilles came to the rescue this morning!! All of the breakfast restaurants were over an hour wait, I'm glad we kept walking and discovered this great little spot! Great service, awesome coffee, breakfast options, kid friendly and good, chill R&B music in the background!
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee beans here are good and make good coffee. This disappointment is that they only sell pour-over; no drip (or batch) coffee is available. So I have to pay more for something fancier than what I want. The egg, cheese, and spinach sandwich is ok. It would be nice if they grilled the spinach too. The most disappointing of all is that everything is served in to-go containers, even if you're eating and drinking on site. I thought California was a "green" state? I guess not here.
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
I loved this place, had an amazing avocado and arugula with tomato on an everything bagel. This is my new favorite breakfast. I can't wait to recreate it at home. Prices were reasonable and portions were huge! Can't ask for a better aesthetic coffee shop/breakfast spot in the heart of the Gaslamp district.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic service. The gal that helped me out today was so bubbly and perky. I got the Finest City drink iced and it hit the spot on this sunny day!
google avatar

Barnaby W.

Yelp
Great lattes. Breakfast food was really good too. For some reason it was very smoky inside so we sat outside.
google avatar

Yelp
I was visiting San Diego and staying at the Marriott Marina, and I came here to wake myself up. I got a lavender cold brew and a sandwich, both were pretty good. The barista told me that if the lavender cold brew was too lavender-y or too cold brew-y, she could adjust it. Although I found this gesture quite nice, I thought it was a little weird that she didn't perfect the ratio before the time she poured it for me? Haha. Otherwise the visit here was as expected:)

Yelp
Located walking distance from the convention center, this is a quaint coffee shop with excellent quality pour over coffee. Service is quick and friendly. I tried their breakfast burrito which was a large serving size and served fresh and hot. It was a bit heavy on the potato and light on the protein but definitely hit the spot before a morning conference session. The next day I got the açaí bowl loaded with fresh fruit and granola. Overall the best was their coffee though, so much that I bought two bags to take home. An excellent option close to the convention center.

Yelp
Achilles continues to expand around San Diego. The newest location near the edge of the Gas Lamp Quarter on 4th avenue offers a nice outside patio and some comfortable inside seating as well. I had an iced Americano with whole milk which was very good and the "Coronado" sandwich which included "Avocado, Bacon, Provolone, Heirloom Tomato, Arugula, Garlic Aioli on toasted Multigrain Bread" (Achilles Coffee Roasters, 2021) for $11. The sandwich was good, especially the bacon which was tasty and had a great chew. However, the sandwich would of been better served if the bread would of been warm and toasty. The avocado, fresh tomato slices, and provolone cheese were all very nice. Service was friendly enough.

Robert M.

Yelp
Came here three days in a row during a trip to San Diego. I found the pour over I got not quite strong enough, but the cold brew was excellent. Cinnamon roll pancakes were intense, but tasty, and the rest of the food menu looked good as well.

Laura A.

Yelp
Visited San Diego for a work conference and saw the great reviews for this coffee shop. It was great all around. The ambiance was relaxed and had good seating outside. The food was great, I wanted something simple and healthy for breakfast, and it was exactly that.
google avatar

Renee I.

Yelp
Small place fairly close to convention center. Several of us walked there to grab lunch. Not enough room for all of us to sit so we took our sandwiches to go. My sandwich was awesome. It had a lovely fried egg on top of egg, spinach, cheese and turkey. If I worked in that area I would be a frequent customer! Service was fast and friendly.
google avatar

Bill K.

Yelp
Didn't try the food, but the cinnamon honey latte was solid, the beans fresh, and the service very friendly.
google avatar

Gitansh B.

Yelp
Came to San Diego for vacation and wanted a morning coffee spot to get some work done and this was definitely the place! Came here every single day because of the great vibes and menu. Every breakfast option is really good with my favorite being The Cove. If you're just looking for coffee, I highly recommend their cold brew or iced coffee
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Awesome spot. Pour over for every cup! Also decaf pour over. Quality food and eats and the staff is amazing. If you're a coffee person, this place is your spot!

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Avocado toast was a big disappointment. Slight bit of avocado spread, covered with tomatoes and arugula. No seasoning. Not tasty. Some staff acted like they didn't want to be there.
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
First time to this location, and happy to report is has more seating inside and same wonderful coffee selections! Enjoyed the cold brew, with honey/cinnamon and splash of almond milk. Their cold brew is just perfect medium roast, and their baristas balance out the flavor rations well for a delicious cold brew Viennese latte

Frank L.

Yelp
Coffee roaster with lots of coffee choices for pour over. Great place to stop by for proper coffee. They also have good breakfast and lunch menus. The toast and breakfast bagels are good.
google avatar

Robert D.

Yelp
Needed coffee fast and Yelp to the rescue. Came across Achilles on my way to the Petco arena for a baseball game, right before they were going to close. Wow. What coffee. I ordered a iced latte and boy was it good. Will be my spot in San Diego when we return.
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
Loved this cafe. The coffee is delicious. Their cold brew has so much flavor and body. I highly recommend stopping here. We even came back the next morning since we loved it so much. Friendly service and clean space with lots of seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Killer breakfast burrito, great service, pumpin bass for for your dining and dancing enjoyment. Killa
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Coffee is delicious. Great selection and they perform the "pour-over method" right there in front of you which is awesome; so you know your coffee is fresh af. I take my coffee black with no sugar 99 percent of the time but I did try my wife's vanilla latte and that was good as well.

lion k.

Yelp
I ordered large hot coffee I was expecting a fresh hot drink because they make it in a different way but it turns out they serve me with a cold coffee taste like it's been there for two weeks. Taste bad and not fresh. Little advice for them: water must be boiled before making coffee.
google avatar

Molly B.

Yelp
Pretty good coffee, but the line was so long to get in. After I ordered, it only took ~5 minutes to get my food. I also ordered a Breakfast Burrito and was hoping to take it to go but it was very poorly wrapped so it ended up leaking through the wrapping into my bag. I will say the burrito was very good. I will also mention they seemed pretty eco-friendly and I got to choose whether I took a lid or straw. Pro-tip: bring a reusable straw!
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Stopped in here for breakfast while out here for a conference last month and really enjoyed it. Flavorful coffee drinks and the food is excellent. I opted for the breakfast burrito option, which was delicious and huge. Could only eat half of it! Saved the other half for later. Reasonable prices, very tasty, friendly service. Really liked this spot!

Brittany F.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop/cafe. Tons of options for coffee and breakfast foods. The breakfast burrito was awesome!
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
The cove was tasty. I love their matcha tea, it's not bitter and they hand whisk it. The bagel was good. Much better than Starbucks.
google avatar

Vicky G.

Yelp
Had a good pour over and açaí bowl here. Generally a good vibe and nice place to meet someone for coffee. But docking a star because I was really miffed about their wanting to charge extra to top off my coffee with oat milk. It's very common to charge more for cappuccinos, lattes, etc. with non-dairy milks. I get it. But to splash your coffee with a little milk and charge extra for it is bad form and business. I'm lactose intolerant and I noted that I wanted oat milk with coffee when I placed my order. They didn't register it, and when I asked for the oat milk later, they made a big fuss about it typically costing extra. They were mumbling so truthfully I didn't really hear it, but they were super stingy with the pour so I asked again to top off the cup with oat. A second barista made sure to let me know it should cost more but they'd make an exception this time. The first barista came back to make known she had already given me a little bit of oat milk (for free) and now if I wanted a second (small) splash I should definitely be charged. The whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. If you're going to do something so uncommon, at least make the policy very explicit.

Yelp
I stopped in here because it was close to the San Diego convention center and I was not disappointed! I travel all over the United States and try to frequent local coffee shops and this one I highly recommend! I got the Sunset Cliffs pour over and it is absolutely fantastic. It is a very dark roast and quite strong but there is no acidity and no bitterness to be found. Very nice staff, too! I highly recommend this place!!
