We chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday. Our expectations were high, given the many positive reviews we had read beforehand.
From the moment we arrived, things did not start well. The restaurant appeared closed. We had to ring the bell two or three times and wait before someone finally came to open the door. Once inside, the welcome was fine and we were seated.
After a long walk around Rome, my partner stood up to wash his hands and simply asked the server who had just seated us where the restroom was. The server looked him straight in the eyes and did not respond at all, continuing instead to serve another table, as if the question did not exist. My partner ended up searching on his own. During that time, I saw the same server laughing with other guests about his request while I was still seated at the table. It was extremely uncomfortable.
At the restroom, the door was closed. A server told him it was occupied. He waited. A few minutes later, the same server returned and said it was strange, as all guests were seated and no one seemed to be missing. We knocked on the door. No answer. Eventually, the staff had to force the door open with a wine opener, only to find that no one was inside.
Unfortunately, the rest of the evening did not improve much. We went to choose our bottle from the impressive wine selection at the front of the restaurant, which is indeed beautiful and extensive. We specified that we wanted sparkling wine. The server presented only three options, without mentioning prices. We ultimately chose a producer we knew well, from an older vintage, and returned to our table.
When the amuse-bouches arrived, I asked for a fork. I was answered in a very condescending way that the dish was meant to be eaten with the hands and that, if I really insisted, they could go get me one. I eventually gave up and ate with my hands.
The following courses were good, but below what we expected given the restaurant’s reputation. One dish did stand out clearly: the Spaghetto limone, provola e zafferano was excellent and without question the highlight of the entire night, along with our bottle of wine.
During the evening, we also spoke with the couple seated next to us, who shared similar concerns regarding the server’s professionalism. They eventually asked to be assigned a different server. In hindsight, we probably should have done the same.
With our last course, a meat dish, the same server suggested we have a glass of red wine, noticing that we had finished our bottle. We declined, having clearly explained at the beginning of the meal that we did not want red wine. He responded, once again condescendingly, that he was “just informing us that it was an option.”
When dessert arrived, two people came to the table, placed a birthday cake in front of me, and left without saying a word. A few minutes later, one of them returned to apologise and explain the dish and its components.
It is important to note that the restaurant itself is beautiful. The lighting is well thought out, the furniture carefully chosen, and even details like the cutlery holders and the refined attire of the service staff show real taste and attention to detail. However, despite this, the quality of the service impacted the evening so negatively that it overshadowed everything else. This is the first time I am leaving a one-star Google review for a restaurant, but given the experience we had, I feel it is necessary.
Overall, beyond the quality of certain plates, what marked the experience most was the attitude, the lack of consideration, and the poor communication. For a special occasion and an establishment of this level, it was frankly disappointing.
