My first culinary experience in Cologne. Acht was recommended by local friends. I’ll start with the most important, the food. It’s fine. We had the three course menu. Scallop with pickled white asparagus as a starter followed by a perfectly cooked tuna steak with green asparagus and then a watery rhubarb dessert. The best part of the meal was the amuse bouche, a wonderfully creamy white asparagus soup. The rest of the meal left both of us searching for adjectives. Everything looked great, the portions were great, the kitchen clearly cares and tries hard but nothing popped. Everything tasted a bit meh (still searching for adjectives). Not bland just nothing that makes the tastebuds tingle. That makes you look up in surprise with a smile on your face. I understand that this seems harsh but the food is priced and presented in such a way that it should at least in moments have you whispering ‘delicious’ and it just never does. For the rest everything was great. The staff was charming, informative and cheerful. The location and decor is elegant and comfortable urban cool. The wine list is enormous, frankly a tad overwhelming, but we ended with a wonderful 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape that made the evening.
