Yelp
a ended her bday celebration with this restaurant as her finale. ofc s and i being the bestest foodie friends ever was the bestest company she can hope for. a little mishap with the resos - read julia thought a made the reso but she actually didn't and vice versa. however we were slotted in as a walk-in. i want to address the elephant in the room - dress code. i can see in other reviews that they were strict abt it; there were no issues with it for me today and everyone dressed accordingly to the dress code listed online - business casual, no flip-flops or torn jeans. i did not feel any snobbiness from the staff.
now that's out of the picture! MASSIVE SHOUTOUT TO THE BESTEST SERVER - NATE C. the c was on the receipt for the name so the c stays! he was attentive, funny, personable, knowledgeable and magical - yes he magically whipped a purse hook for s' purse because it was hanging precariously on the back of her chair and he was afraid that he might knock it off after walking by a few times. so please ask for him the next time you decide to check this place out - tell him double fist sent ya!
nate guided us along as this was a our first time here. we started with cocktails - momo for me, pink flamingo for a, and a extra dirty vodka martini for s. i didn't taste s' martini cuz i'm not a big fan of martinis. my drink was very refreshing - strong notes of yuzu/citrus but no peach notes at all (momo DOES mean peaches in japanese last time i checked). a's pink flamingo was VERY citrusy with strong notes of grapefruit. after these drinks, we basically had nate do a mini wine pairing for our dishes - ALL the wines were great and the white port was def a surprise! he was able to tell us abt the wines, little anecdotes and ofc let s take pictures of the bottles so we can rmb what we drank.
we went á la carte with the help of nate (yes his name will keep appearing) - we ordered 2 appys, 3 mains and 2 desserts; all recommended by nate except the one dessert (i made an executive decision for that one). we had the bread to begin - best. olive. oil. ever. the bread was also delish!
for starters, we had the polpo alla griglia (grilled octopus) and the caprese con pesche (grilled peaches. nate was VERY accommodating with our photo taking thru out the whole dinner. the grilled octopus is a nate!fav - i loved the tomato marmalade and the octopus was grilled to perfection. the nori cracker added a nice crunch to the dish. the grilled peaches were juicy and sweet with a lovely charred taste. we had added extra burrata so that we weren't fighting for the cheese
for a middle dish, we had the cannelloni with duck confit inside. there were three so nate helped served us each one. the duck confit was rich and savoury but not overpowering. in fact, for all the dishes, we found the flavours all blended together into a symphony of deliciousness in our mouths. the duck sauce on top of the cannelloni added a nice balance to the dish. (it is also at around this point we started to double/triple fist wines frm nate's personalize mini pairing)
mains were the braciola di cinghiale (boar chops) and halibut scottato. the boar chops - another nate!fav - was astonishing. the fresh peppercorn on top helped to cut the density of the chop that was sliced in the kitchen for us. the crispy risotto helped round out the kick from the peppercorn, and the crunch was nice too. the seared halibut was flaky and rich. the fennel orange salad - especially the orange - added a freshness to the dish.
magical nate to the rescue (again) when it comes to desserts. we had wanted something for the bday girl, and while we were at the washroom (we as in s and i, plus open washroom of sorts as the sinks are communal), we caught nate and told him abt the idea. he had recommended dolce vita and we went with that for the bday girl. i selfishly ordered the millefoglie (aka millefeuille - one of my fav desserts EVER) as the 2nd dessert. nate described dolce vita as a mini häagen-dazs bar, and it did indeed arrive that way. it was decadent hazelnut mousse with aerate chocolate pieces (read: aero) with marshmallow bits. nate was super awesome by treating this on the house for the bday girl - yes ofc there was a candle. the millefoglie was everything i want in a proper millefeuille. the cognac cream was light, and the layers of pastry were crisp.
another big shoutout and thank you to nate!!
i got a new nickname, some laughs and a hella lot more wine knowledge tonight ;)
