Osteria Acqualavica

"Situated just a stone’s throw from Piazza del Duomo, this evocative restaurant with a wine-tasting cellar occupies a charming old boathouse. Typical specialities from the Etna region feature on the menu, as well as a choice of pizzas (evening only). The dishes here are traditional and comforting, including an excellent caponata, “fuori della Norma” pasta, fried fish and fish carpaccio, as well as other seafood options among the main courses." - Michelin Inspector

Lunch. It was quiet…Sunday. Atmosphere very pleasant. You can see kitchen and cooks preparing meals. Had spaghetti with sea urchin and the grilled Branzino. Both meals were perfectly prepared and cooked. The menu has so many wonderful choices it was difficult to decide. We’ll back again to try other dishes before departing Catania.

I dropped in for lunch without a reservation, no problem at all and was warmly greeted by my waitress Ivana, who was attentive, friendly, and made me feel right at home. The food was fantastic. The Sicilian-style fish carpaccio was elegantly prepared and bursting with flavor. fresh, light, and absolutely delicious. The homemade bread was warm, crusty, and clearly baked that very day perfect for mopping up every last drop of olive oil. And the wine was excellent quality yet very affordable. It paired beautifully with the seafood and elevated the whole meal. All in all: great ambiance, superb food, kind service (especially thanks to Ivana), and excellent value. Highly recommend!

The plate with raw fish was very nice and yummy. Maybe missed some acidity in my personal preference. Pasta and risotto were very big! Overall it was a nice place

We went just before opening time, so it was quiet and we enjoyed a smooth, relaxed dinner without any long waits. Service was friendly and professional, and the food came in generous portions at a fair price. The highlight? Definitely the “Sarde a Beccafico”: crunchy, tasty, and not too heavy on the vinegar. Absolutely worth trying!

Came here after all the good reviews, recommendations and the Bib Gourmand. We were a bit disappointed. The food was very bland and nothing special, quite tasteless. We were expecting high flavours and more special food. We opted for the fixed menu, which is cheap so you cannot expect highest quality, but we wished we opted for a la carte dining. Portions are very big and generous, but lack of taste made that we did not finish all the plates. Staff is excellent and very friendly. Als the wine and recommendation for the wine was good! Would buy this wine again! The restaurant is very big, when we came, only two tables were booked. The atmosphere is nice, and restaurant looks very pretty.

Nice building in a converted warehouse attached to our hotel. Staff mixed in terms of manner. One male member of staff was particularly rude. One word questions / one word answers. Throwing food down on table without care. Same with the bill. We can speak a few words of Italian but even that did not seem to cheer him up. Food pretty good however, but the manner of the male staff ruined the atmosphere. I thought it was because we were tourists who did not speak Italian but he was doing it with Italian speaking diners as well. We ate quickly, paid and left. Would not return. I have fed this back to the hotel as the restaurant was suggested by them as a place to dine.

I went to this restaurant based on them being mentioned in the Michelin guide. It was a let down!! I ordered two raw oysters, tuna carpaccio, and lobster spaghetti. The oysters were average, one was pretty badly mangled. The tuna carpaccio was pretty good, but I guess it would be hard to mess this up. The spaghetti was decent. There was hardly any lobster meat although the sauce was ok. The worst things about this restaurant were: Service and Atmosphere. Service was downright rude. Just one example: Once I told the waiter I was done and would not order dessert, he essentially asked whether he should bring the bill. This is NEVER done in Europe! The customer is always the one asking for the bill, even in a cafe. The rest of the service was curt, almost insulting. Atmosphere? What atmosphere? The place was ear-splitting loud.
