As a Chef and a Woman, I Regret Joining the Boys’ Club | Eater

"A strip‑club–cum–steakhouse that the author and her coworkers used as a hangout, characterized by an overtly sexualized, bawdy atmosphere and indifferent but accommodating performers. It also serves late‑night fare (notably biscuits and gravy, which the author calls 'terrifying'), and functions as an emblem of the hard‑partying kitchen culture that blurred professional boundaries and normalized exploitative behavior." - Naomi Pomeroy

Atmosphere was great, waitress was ok, restaurant was not busy but took way to long to get sub-par food. I ordered the chicken souvlaki(marinated chicken skewers) came out burnt on one side and it was 3 big chunks of chicken not on skewers, not flavorful at all, husband ordered the gyro plate that says lamb and beef, only had lamb, and no flavor and looked more like beef jerky. Have had authentic greek food from greece and this was no where near that.

This place is always a hit! It’s always better than I expected, and the people I bring over love it too. The food was amazing, the wine was top-notch, and the people were so friendly and welcoming.

Came here for dinner and left wanting more! We live in temple so rarely travel to harker heights, but our friends have been talking about a Greek restaurant here for months so decided to check it out! Externally it was unassuming restaurant, but inside it was nicely decorated and clean. Our waitress was attentive! I accidently dropped my fork and she replaced it immediately without being asked The four dip appetizer was amazing! The feta cheese really left an impression on us! It was cold so I got the beef stew, and it was a little watery for my taste, but overall amazing! We also got a traditional gyro wrap and absolutely loved it. We cannot wait to come back!

Acropolis is a fine dining Greek food for adults, with a children’s menu as well. It is one of the best overall restaurants in Harker Heights and the surrounding areas. The variety of food and choices on the menu are plentiful and give each customer an opportunity a chance to try

Google
This is a EXCELLENT RESTAURANT WITH EXCELLENT FOOD AND SERVICE. The lamb shanks is fall off the bone tender and delicious. This is NOT fast food...home cooked and perfect. If you haven't eaten here yet...well IT'S A MUST TRY AND WORTH EVERY DOLLAR I SPENT. We will be back k no question about it.

Yelp
I was skeptical on going to this restaurant since I'm not a big Greek food lover, but my wife was looking for something different so we decided to try it out. So glad we did!! My wife got the lamb chops and I got the lamb shanks and OMG!! Lamb shanks are now my favorite!! The lamb was absolutely incredible and I cannot recommend this place enough and look forward to trying many other dishes. If things change, I'll modify this review but I highly doubt it will. The wait staff was very attentive and courteous

Yelp
While the service could have been better, the rack of lamb was amazing and made up for it. This location is smaller than the one I've been to in Florida, but very nice decor and atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this place! The interior is well-designed with mood lighting and live music at a good volume in the background so you can still enjoy your conversation. We were seated promptly and didn't have to wait. They don't have an updated drink menu which was a little bit of a disappointment, but the waitress helped me pick out a nice glass of wine. The four dips appetizer was tasty. For my entree, I had the traditional wrap with gyro meat and a side of rice. It was delicious! The serving was large and I couldn't finish it. Overall, a great experience and I hope to be back soon.

Yelp
I cater from Acropolis, quite often. They have excellent food! If you're feeding a group, their family packs are definitely the way to go. Their food is tasty, their staff friendly and they have great service.

Yelp
I experienced Greek cuisine for the first time, and what an amazing introduction! I had the Traditional Wrap with gyro meat and lentil soup--both were absolutely phenomenal. The flavors were incredible, and the soup was warm and comforting. The restaurant had a cozy, clean atmosphere with a friendly vibe. You could tell the staff enjoyed being there, and our server, Zima, was just as fantastic as the food--attentive and welcoming! Whether it's for date night or a casual afternoon, this place is perfect for food and wine. Everything looked so good, I started eating before I remembered to snap a picture--ha ha! Big thanks to Dez for the invite! I'm already looking forward to my next visit. Highly recommend this spot for anyone craving delicious Greek food!

Yelp
Outstanding menu. Outstanding service. Great service. Very pleased. Very popular. Tremendous reputation We will definitely keep going. Great HOSPITALITY. VERY PLEASED WITH MENU. Cannot wait to go again. Supr place.

Yelp
We are a group of ladies who come to eat every other month. Today we had our get together again at this location! We used to be pleased but since today many of us most likely will not return! I don't know what you are thinking but the portions you have now are absolutely 109% rude! The Gyro plate portions especially the meat is a absolute joke! I don't want to even know what a kids size looks like now! I could count my meat if it was five strips of gyros it sure wasn't more! We did hear that the staff got told to but less meat on the plates bit guess what the price didn't change! One of the ladies just had tzatziki and pita (four corners of pita ) and thatbnow cost a whopping $9 ! This needs to go back to where it was !

Yelp
I ordered a gyro plate to go and I was very disappointed to have my naan be the texture of a cracker. I usually eat inside but today I chose to take my food to go, I've never had issues with my food when I have eaten inside. The food is always delicious when you dine in, but when it's taken to go it's gross and old . Service dinning in is always awkward. The entire staff stands around and stares are you like they have nothing to do.

Jonah S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and even better food! I ordered the gyro and it was delicious--fresh and flavorful. The service was quick, and the price wasn't bad at all. Definitely a spot I'd visit again! Ideal for lunch

Yelp
The BEST! Delicious food. Flavorful cooked with love. The service was outstanding. The restaurant clean clean clean! First time dining and now I'll become a regular.

Yelp
I came for a late lunch and I can't wait to go back! This was the best Greek food I've ever had, and I say this as someone who has lived in culinary Meccas like Miami, Fl and Los Angeles, CA. Most of the time when I read a menu, I find just a handful of things that I would want to order, but at Acropolis I found myself wanting to try everything on the menu. I'm definitely going to be coming back regularly to give each item a try. For this time, my husband and I ordered the baked feta, he got the gyro plate, and I had the mussels. Our server was kind enough to offer to prepare the first two servings of the baked feta for us, demonstrating the intended way of enjoying the plate. This added so much to our experience. The gyro plate came with a fresh tzatziki sauce that tasted like it was made from scratch that morning. The gyro was succulent, and the stuffed grape leaves my husband got as a side were the best we'd had anywhere. The roasted potatoes as his other side were crispy and spiced with garlic. My baked mussels were in a perfect garlic-forward, tomato sauce, which we enjoyed with the potatoes. Our server was kind enough to offer some fresh mint leaves, straight from her home garden, for my tea. We spotted the owner when we entered, ensuring that we received prompt service. The decor was pleasant, and it was an overall warm and comforting experience on a such a frigid day.

Yelp
Again, a letdown, unfortunately. Visited on a Saturday evening after several years with hopes that food quality may have improved. Ambience is still good, with live music and all. Dolmathes were ok and vegetable salads were fresh. Otherwise, - very limited selection of (overpriced) cocktails. - tabbouleh salad had hardly any parsley and all bulgur. - almost all cooked food was cold, dry and did not appear or taste fresh - including gyro meat, falafel , kofta, steak, spanakopita - it seemed that everything had been warmed and re-warmed. - baklava was frozen cold and dry. - servers are obviously overworked so I won't hold it against them if ours didn't even have time to come back to refill waters unless called. - 20% gratuity was automatically added ( for party of 6, and I am fine with that) but neither was it mentioned on the menu nor did the service or food live upto it. - the server asked if we were there for an occasion ( which was a graduation) and we told him but he promptly forgot about it and there was no complementary gesture on his part. - I recently had meals at Pasha in SanAntonio where the whole Mediterranean hospitality, experience and food are on another level (and cheaper) . - perhaps the owner of Acropolis should visit Pasha to get some pointers instead of just customarily going from table to table asking if all was good.

Yelp
I've had Greek food in Greece and this was a close second. I normally don't leave reviews but this place was so good, the service was amazing the people were very nice. We were seated extremely quickly and the food was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend this spot and everything on the menu!
google avatar

Kacie L.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in Killeen - great ambiance and serves authentic Mediterranean food, hidden away in a strip mall off of the highway. Falafel, potatoes, tiramisu, baklava, and pasta were all amazing. Great service too.

Yelp
Drove over 20 minutes to try this restaurant and was told the kitchen closes at 8:30, it was 8:38 and everything says they're open until 9. Frustrating; I'd recommend putting your hours to 8:30 instead.

Lawrence S.

Yelp
Terrible Service & Poor Communication If I could give zero stars, I would. Our party of 8 waited for an hour, only to be told they couldn't seat us. No updates, no clear communication--just a complete waste of time. A restaurant should at least be able to manage reservations and seating properly, but they failed at the most basic part of their job. Avoid this place if you expect even the slightest bit of organization or respect for your time.

Yelp
I am absolutely appalled by the service I received here. I placed a pickup order with an estimated ready time that ended up being an hour too early. An hour! I arrived 5 minutes after my original time and was told 10 more minutes. "10 more minutes" happened three times in a row. Then it was "they're boxing it up now" for another 25 minutes. It's completely unacceptable to keep a customer waiting that long without any form of communication or apology from a manager or owner. To make matters worse, when I finally received my order, it didn't include everything. A Greek restaurant somehow managed to forget the pita after an hour overdue. Also, the quality was not the same. I had a previous experience that was highlighted with great food. Tonight was different. You can tell it was rushed and not to the same standard. It's clear that this establishment has absolutely no regard for its pick up customers. It's a shame because I know the food is usually good and the restaurant was fairly busy. However, I will not return to this place and I strongly advise others to avoid calling in an order. This is a prime example of how not to run call in orders. Just eliminate the option if you can't swing it- be transparent with those using apps or call in.

Christina V.

Yelp
Staph food poisoning contracted from gyro takeout - 3/4 people who ordered lunch today are now extremely ill. It was all room temperature on arrival so it must've been mishandled.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is consistently great and made to perfection and the prices for the value are reasonable. That's not something that's common. Love all their greek items highly recommend!

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner one night & was pleasantly surprised how romantic the inside was! We were expecting it to be more of a fast-food kind of place, I guess. The wine selection was extensive, so I asked the waiter for his recommendation for a red wine. He brought us a cab & a Malbec, which were both amazing! We learned that they're actually made by the owner himself, which was pretty cool. We ordered the flaming saganaki, which is imported Greek cheese lightly grilled & flamed table side with brandy. It tasted SO good & it reminded me of a grilled cheese sandwich. The presentation with the fire was pretty cool to watch, just wish it came with a little more veggies. Then we ordered the eggplant rollatini which was also delicious. It was definitely a hearty dish & the flavors were spot on. I don't know how my husband ate it all because it was so filling! I was boring & just got a Greek salad, but it was equally yummy & was good sized. We later learned that almost all of the meals could be made vegan by switching out the meat for falafel, so we will definitely be going back to try more items on the menu!

Yelp
Yelp 2008-2022; still going strong and wanted to feature a local spot in Central Texas for my 1000th review. If you're a regular follower I just pushed Paula Deen and butter galore into the 999 slot. So, my hungry friends welcome to Acropolis in Harker Heights, Texas. We've been exploring the Killeen/HH/Temple/Belton food scene recently as one of our favorite car club couples lives in the area. Not exactly my turf but we're discovering this area has an uncanny amount of restaurant diversity. Houston being a similar destination where you can get just about any global cuisine you desire. Around Austin the Greek scene is hit or miss so it was time to find some flaming Kasseri and then order half the menu. I had forgotten how much I love this dish. Dump some high proof alcohol (usually a Greek Brandy or Ouzo) on it and light it up! Once the flames settle you're left with a delicate treat. Buddy always orders Calamari so that's the next dish that hit the table. Nice bites but I wished it was paired with a different sauce. Normally a delicate Aioli or even Marinara. I love Tzatziki but it doesn't have to come with 3/4 of the appetizers. Next up Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) which had a lovely filling and texture. Bring on the traditional Gyro for me! I love this dish, but don't really do lamb in other forms. The spit fired mixture of beef and lamb together tames the traditional gaminess of the meat. Paired with simple crispy potatoes it was a fine version and something I don't get to have very often. GF has been working on her roughage intake and the Greek Salad fit that bill nicely. I did steal an olive for good measure; miss eating those too. Buddy Mike had the full on taste of everything including two types of Spanakopita, Steak Souvlaki, Kofta, Gyro meat, Tiropita, and buttered rice. Here's an OPA! to 1000 and yall check this place out!

Yelp
We've been coming here for a while. Our past visit will be the last. My wife has stage 4 cancer while also being allergic to a few things. She was getting the couscous with no almonds due to allergy. The last few orders they were also leaving out the feta and raisins. So, she put on the order to please add the feta and raisins. When I went in to pick our order up, I asked if I could check the couscous. The lady who claimed to be the manager said, "I made sure it was made correct since it's such a big deal". I guess because my wife is allergic to almonds, it's a "big deal" to make sure the order is correct. After leaving I called and asked to speak with the owner but was told he wasn't there. Although when I was leaving I seen him out front. She was very unprofessional and rude. The service up front is rather horrible. I've been inside and waited thirty minutes before being helped. The order is never on time but never complained until now.

Yelp
Waited over an hour to pick up my food, which was literally just a gyro wrap. The waitress asked the owner if he could provide me with a gift card for the inconvenience and I was given nothing. Owner even handed me my food and said sorry and offered me a bag for it. Be so for real right now I want my money back. just got home and entire order was wrong. order gyro wrap, greek salad and hummus. was given the wrap and potatoes, that's it. My boyfriend ordered a wrap and was given just meat.

Yelp
I'm updating my review for service, sat at the bar, i sled the server if I could she said yes, she gave me a menu and never came back to me after 10 minutes. Sitting at the bar I can see the cook, i lost my appetite when the cook was wiping his hands on his apron and his pants while handling food directly with his hands with no gloves.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Service was great. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was not busy. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
A Gyro isn't a true gyro unless it is cut from a rotating spindle, and then heated on a grill. That's how Acropolis does it and I was thrilled! Now, I got the platter not the sandwich so I can not speak to the toppings on the sandwich and every culture does it differently. The same with baklava some cultures use walnuts and some use pistachios, I enjoy the pistachio version more, but this spot has the walnut version. However, I enjoyed their gyro platter but that was not the only thing in my rating of this restaurant that took me by surprise. YOU MUST TRY THEIR Chocolate Mousse Cake!!!!!! OMG, it was so delicious I went back for another slice on "Thanksgiving Day" but they were closed. Well, my son, daughter-in-law, and new granddaughter live here so I will be back "much and many" more times!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here last night for dinner during a business trip. What a nice surprise. Simply outstanding Greek food and wonderful service. I got the Greek Combination meal and added a side salad. Every item was fresh and extremely flavorful. The service was attentive and timely. Prices were a little higher than what I would expect for the location but the food quality justified it.

Stacy S.

Yelp
Great, tasty food that's hot and fresh, the owner is present and takes great care of all customers

Yelp
If you are looking for authentic Greek food in CenTex, this is a must stop. Greek "grill tellers" were one of our go to spots in Germany when we wanted a change from schnitzel. This place had a large and varied menu, and it all comes out tasting like your grandmother is back in the kitchen cooking for your homecoming. We left stuffed to the gills with good food. The owner/manager stopped by shortly after we got our meals served, wanted to check if we were happy with our food - one of those clap-you-on-the-back, "how you folks doing?" checks. Very sincere and friendly. Servers were excellent as well, bonus, our server sang happy birthday at another table, and it was the Broadway professional version (which he was before). No pictures, we were too busy shoveling food in......

Angela Z.

Yelp
Service was excellent! Food was delicious. This would be a great spot for a date. We went with our kids and we still enjoyed ourselves. Wish I would have taken pictures of our food but we were all so eager to dine in. This place did not disappoint.

Valerie M.

Yelp
Wonderful food, great service & lovely inside!! Menu selection is huge. Wine selection is also large.
google avatar

Nara L.

Yelp
Lovely for family, first dates, or catching up with friends old and new. They have menu specials, and you'll definitely get your moneys worth!

Silvia C.

Yelp
My Husband went there for take out for my Birthday. We were at the restaurant several times before and the food was good. But when I unpacked our gyro plate at home, my appetite faded away. The pita bred was like tasteless pale frisbees, the eggplant was a bowl of oil with some tiny pieces of eggplant and the meat was dry and grey. Tzatziki with a mini serving like a tablespoon. Very disappointing! The night after this stuff we both did not feel well. They will not see us again.

Judy S.

Yelp
Started out with the four dips, which consisted of hummus, roasted pepper hummus, feta dip and tzatziki sauce served with fresh pita bread. Very good, my favorite was the roasted pepper hummus. For my main meal, I ordered the Gyro plate. Mine came with a blend of lamb and beef, served with tzatziki sauce, a Greek salad and roasted potatoes. The meal was delicious. The atmosphere was very nice and the service was good but a little slow. I would definitely go back.

Jenna H.

Yelp
Great Service and the food is delicious! Nice place for date night. Try the butter chicken and tender lamb! All the food is great!

Yelp
What amazing atmosphere! Service is impeccable and the Lamb chops are mouth watering. Heather is the best! Thank you for a great evening.

Yelp
This place is such a gem! The customer service was great! Our server was sweet and very friendly! She was knowledgeable about items on the menu as well as made great recommendations! We both had Chicken Souvlaki !!! I had sides of eggplant and roasted cauliflowerMy husband had lentil soup and salad! Our chicken was cooked perfected on the grill! Leaving that grill taste but also very moist and not chewy at all! All the sides were soooo good! This wasn't our first out last time here! Perfect spot for a nice well balanced lunch date!

Yelp
Dinner what a wonderful place. Food is flavorful and fresh. Ordered different items and nothing so far has failed to taste good. Staff is friendly and they work hard. But still able to interact with customers and have fun. Food was fresh ordered the gyro plate and a good selections of side dishes. Each one fresh and tasted wonderful.

Le B.

Yelp
Hands down the best gyro I have ever eaten in my life. I've ordered from this place countless times and the food quality remained exceptional!! Must order the potatoes on the side- they are mouthwatering.

Yelp
I decided to celebrate my birthday with my family at this location because I loved the food and the atmosphere. Unfortunately, a far from pleasant experience is what I had. Prior to us going, my husband called and asked if they were able to take a party of ten. The person on the phone confirmed we could be accommodated. Upon me entering the establishment, I noticed that our party was separated. Not like the next table over, but so much so, it was two completely separate dining experiences. When the party left from the table next to ours, my husband went to our server (who took about 20 minutes to bring us water, while the table that she sat while we waited to place our order was greeted with hugs and they promptly got their drinks), to ask if the rest of the family could be seated closer. The owner ran over to my husband to intercept the request and said the rest of our family couldn't sit at that table and then he said very loudly and very rudely, that he was trying to be nice. And walked off. I had seen and heard enough. I told my family that I no longer wanted to spend our hard earned money in an establishment where the owner feels like it is ok to rude. We left without eating and I don't plan on returning. My husband acted on information that was told to him by someone that worked there, but when we get there we are treated like the information was fabricated. He turned my birthday dining experience into a nightmare. We were there for an hour and only got water and had just gotten appetizers during that time. I cannot nor will not support rudeness.

Yelp
I haven't been back since 2021 and decided today to try them out again. I'm so glad I did! As soon as we walked in we were greeted right away and sat down. Our waitress (Heather) was amazing! She talked to us, was very informative of the menu and took our order right away. She didn't forget about us! We ordered 2 wines, Lucido and Kandi red wines. Both were house wines. One was bold and one was sweet. Both were amazing! The bold red house wine was extremely good. Wasn't dry, had a great aroma and silk flavor. Went down smooth. The sweet wine was served cold and was sparkling; really great! I'd get it again! We ordered the Mezza plate sampler again and it didn't disappoint. Definitely recommend with a glass of wine. My husband had the eggplant rollatini and it came out hot! Perfect portion size, and cheesy. I wanted to trade him dishes but he kindly refused. Sauce was portioned good, not over saucy or bitter. I definitely will order it next time. I had the Garides Ouza Pasta. It had a creamy sweet flavor. It had about 5 jumbo shrimp, perfect amount of cheese and good amount of pasta. It came out hot! The Naan bread was perfect to have to dip into the sauce. Only thing I'd would have liked in the dish is some type of veggie outside of tomato. The other thing that was questionable was the the menu stated "flamed table-side with brandy". I thought they'd do the flame at the table but didn't. I didn't ask because overall the food was delicious. Maybe next time I will ask. Overall, our experience was way better from the first time (customer service wise) but the food did not disappoint. We will return to try another dish! Thanks for the great experience!

Yelp
It was my first visit to the Acropolis in almost 5 years, and I must tell that we had a great experience! You can come for a business lunch, casual, or even a lovely romantic night out because the environment is casual/elegant. The meal was excellent; my personal favorite was the lentil soup. They have a large selection of wines. The owner came over to check on us and see if we liked the dinner. He was quite polite! I'll definitely be returning in the near future to sample the rest of the menu's offerings.

Yelp
Had an incredible meal here tonight! Fresh, homemade authentic Mediterranean cuisine from an unbelievably friendly staff - appetizer plate had delicious grilled veggies and flaky buttery feta and spinach pies; entree of couscous salad with raisins and almonds and lemon mint dressing and succulent grilled chicken. So impressed to find such good food in an strip mall on Hwy 190 - unassuming outside but inside the is peaceful has a simple and clean decor with great hospitality. I will100% be back here when I'm passing through!

Yelp
Definitely in the top 5 in the central Texas area. The food is always fresh and the staff are alway courteous

Yelp
We order from Acropolis every few weeks. The gyro platter is my favorite. I love their dolmades, lemon soup, and the Greek salad is great. The family likes getting the different types of humus with pita. Love it.
