My interest for Greek food was inspired by a quaint little spot in New York a couple years ago. I'd always get the falafel, gyro and grape leaves. Should I have chosen to eat the falafel or gyro today at Acropolis? Possibly, maybe this review would have been different.
I decided to go out of my comfort zone and try something different. As you walk in, you are immediately greeted by staff who eagerly await to have you seated. The place is outfitted with Greek inspired decor all around. There are benches with pillows, that add more of a nuisance than anything.
The menu is quite vast, with a lot of dishes inspired by the main land. The special of the day was the lamb shank, accompanied by your choice of two sides. I chose the potatoes, and dolmathes (grape leaves). The lamb shank was pictured beautifully on the menu. It showed it braised in the special sauce they have, and that golden flake made it stand out.
The food, was cooked fresh. Always a plus for a restaurant to cook with fresh ingredients. It was maybe around 20-25 minutes after the food arrived. I was very excited to try this new dish, so I dug in with high expectations that fell short.
The sauce was incredibly oily. It almost looked like a river of oil. The lamb shank, though tender, very tender, was very bland. There was no seasoning put on the lamb itself. The potatoes, they had a nice crisp to them, overcooked slightly. The grape leaves, were decent.
The price was average to low. The lamb shank was a bit pricey at almost $18. It honestly should be half the price, it did not blow me away.
Would I be coming back to give it a try? Yes, but not this dish. Yes the dish looks finished, but it is also because I am slightly overweight and will eat anything I can fit on my fork.
