The Best Ice Cream in Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Open seasonally since 2003, Acushnet Creamery serves up over 50 flavors of ice cream — try one in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone. There are also ice cream cakes, frappes, freezes, “Nor’easters” (blended ice cream with mix-ins), ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, and more. There’s a second Acushnet Creamery in South Dartmouth, with a third in the works for New Bedford. Sample flavors: macaderry nut, caffeine crunch, raspberry serenity, cranberry harvest, coffee Oreo" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
We had some great ice cream at Acushnet Creamery after a sunset cruise! They staff was really nice and efficient and the ice cream really hit the spot! Really recommend the chocolate frappe, pistachio ice cream or the purple cow ice cream.

Google
Fantastic ice cream! There was a bit of a line, but it moved quickly. My husband had the coffee oreo on a sugar cone. My friend had the Reese's peanut butter with chocolate jimmies. And I had a combination cranberry harvest and Boston creme pie. Due to my pancreatic cancer, I am only able to tolerate a kids cup of ice cream, but I wanted two flavors and they didn't hesitate to accommodate my dietary restrictions. The employees were respectful, pleasant, and patient...which can be difficult to come by. I will definitely visit again the next time I visit. The ice cream is flavorful, creamy, and homemade right on site! Highly recommend.

Google
Great ice cream. A variety of choices.

Google
We visited Acushnet Creamery last night and it was wonderful! My youngest has food allergies to peanuts and tree nuts and was able to enjoy an ice cream with all of us last night. The ice cream scooper that helped us was amazing- he got the ingredients list, used a fresh scoop and got my son a fresh cone. It’s truly the little things!!!

Google
Very disappointed with Acushnet Creamery. The ice cream is delicious but the service not so much. My first time at the Acushnet location. Ordered a large Sundae which cost over $6.50 and it was very poorly served. Worst I ever had. It calls for 2 spoons but I got a very small 1.5! How I wish Dairy Maid was open year round! Never coming back and give my hard earned money to this place. What a joke!

Google
Walked into the front I was the only customer two kids a girl and a boy cleaning a machine, turned around looked at me... turned back around and went to cleaning the machines without greeting the customer until I actually hailed one over, not a friendly greeting

Google

Google
Strolling through the streets of Acushnet, I stumbled upon the Acushnet Creamery, a quaint shop that smelled of freshly baked waffle cones. The blinking Open sign beckoned me inside. There, I met my fate: Butternut Crunch. Nestled in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone, each bite was a symphony of flavors—creamy, nutty, with a hint of caramel. It wasn't just ice cream; it was a masterpiece, a creamy concoction that whispered tales of autumn in every crunch. This was no mere dessert; it was a revelation, a scoop of heaven that I had the privilege to hold.

Yelp
I love ice cream and this place did not disappoint! I was afraid that we wouldn't find good homemade ice cream in the February, but thankfully Acushnet was open! And busy! The line was long but the staff were working hard to make it go as quickly as possible. It gave us some time to pick flavors, which wasn't easy, because so many of them sounded so good! We loved what we had (pictured) and would definitely go back again!

Yelp
Homemade ice cream in tons of Flavor options! Delicious! Line is never too long and they employ highschool kids
google avatar

Yelp
Only in New England would there be a line out the door for ice cream on a 20 degree day in February! I can't imagine how busy this place would get in the summer. Acushnet Creamery seems to be super popular and for good reason! I had a delicious large ice cream sundae with hot fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles, and two scoops of peanut butter oreo ice cream! I also got a hand-packed pint of strawberry cheesecake ice cream to take home. The prices are totally reasonable, my total was less than $17 with tip for the super friendly and efficient kids working here! The ice cream is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum from dense/creamy to light/fluffy.Would definitely recommend no matter the weather!

Wilona V.

Yelp
My family and I love this place! It's always so busy but not a bad wait. Line moves quickly and the employees are so nice! Me and my daughter love the no sugar added maple walnut with jimmies!

Matthew T.

Yelp
Awesome ice cream here. Huge scoops. A bit of a drive and tucked away between Falmouth and Bourne. Kids that work there worked hard and the line moved quickly. Will return
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
One of the best ice cream places around. Made locally. Staff is always friendly. Lines move quickly even though they may be out the door.

Dore S.

Yelp
They keep bragging about homemade ice cream, and sure it tastes good, but, it's just a mix that they add flavorings to. It's like buying a grocery store cake mix with canned frosting, and telling people you made it from scratch...not the same as buying high quality ingredients and following a recipe. Too many chemicals and artificial ingredients...gives me a stomach ache every time. :/ I really wanted to like it, but, it's not worth feeling sick for an entire day afterward.

Yelp
Once again, we found ourselves at our favorite spot in the area for ice cream. You should expect to wait in line, but I promise it's worth the wait! If you don't have to wait in line, consider yourself to be lucky. My go to here is a peanut butter cup sundae with vanilla ice cream. It consists of peanut butter sauce, hot fudge, Reese's pieces, whipped cream, Reese's peanut butter cups, and your choice of ice cream. It's huge, so be prepared. If you love peanut butter you will absolutely love this sundae. My son has gotten the Take 5 sundae multiple times and thinks it's the best thing ever. It has pretzels, hot fudge, caramel, peanut butter, whipped cream, with your choice of ice cream. He pushed it to the next level by having it in one of their homemade chocolate dipped waffle bowls. I don't recommend doing this unless you have a large appetite as he was too full once he finished his once cream. I also have tried the chocolate dipped waffle bowl for my sundae but it was too much. One recommendation is bring your own spoon, seems that they have downgraded to cheaper spoons, which bend completely in half while your trying to eat. Another tip, if you love ice cream cakes stop buying the mediocre ones from the grocery store. Acushnet Creamery makes homemade custom ice cream cakes to order. Just make sure you give them at least 2 weeks notice, you won't regret it!

Yelp
Besides the fact that their ice cream is the best around the staff is amazing always friendly and smiling. The atmosphere is always happy . Hard to be upset with great ice cream
google avatar

Jakob S.

Yelp
Acushnet Creamy never disappoints!! Always something new to catch my eye on their Facebook page. Their frequent menu additions and marketing certainly keep customers coming again and again. Cute location next to the park.

Yelp
The ice cream was very delicious. The service was organized and they took our order quickly. It took more time to get our sundaes and there was no seating available. There are a few tables and some benches on site but since it was very hot on a Sunday obviously it was very busy. LUCKY fort is there is a fantastic park right next door with a huge playground and picnic tables in the shade Definitely recommend

Yelp
Homemade ice cream! It's the best around. I'm spoiled now and won't go anywhere else.

Yelp
Came here after apple picking at Keiths Farm that is down the road. I ordered the chocolate mint cookie and strawberry shortcake ice cream flavors on a waffle cone, it was soo good! I definitely recommend coming here and everyone in our party enjoyed their flavors as well! The only downside is that you had to build your ice cream together, so basically my waffle cone was wrapped in aluminum foil and the ice cream were in a cup container and I had to "build it", but it is what it is and every food establishment is trying their best during times like these. The process of ordering online was easy and we got there texted them and voila they came with our order.
google avatar

Aurora C.

Yelp
Really good ice cream. We got the coffee oreo and peach flavors as well as a mango strawberry smoothie and everything was really delicious. They accept credit card no matter what the amount, which is super convenient. Definitely recommend Acushnet for ice cream after a dinner by the water.
google avatar

Bryon K.

Yelp
The best ice cream on the SouthCoast of MA. Their Boston Cream Pie ice cream is amazing
google avatar

Christine Z.

Yelp
Second best ice cream spot in the area. The ice cream is so rich and creamy. It's not overpriced. Only bad thing is the lines insane but worth the wait
google avatar

Pam D.

Yelp
Delicious gourmet ice cream. YUMMY! Friendly staff, always a good experience. Don't wait go today.
google avatar

Jaid T.

Yelp
i love their selection! the workers are so nice and the experience is amazing:) great ice cream too
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
Always amazing quality homemade ice cream. Great choices of flavors. Definitely best ice cream around. Line can get long (parking lot crowded) during peak hours. It moves along quickly. Wish they had places to sit. Be prepared to snack in your car or try to lick while driving.
google avatar

Alec G.

Yelp
Wonderful and amazing. Staff is made up of the local community which the kids always love. As a 27 year old man who orders a mischievous sundae, I am treated with no judgement. Only downside? No liquor license.
google avatar

Robbi-Beth D.

Yelp
Mixed reviews because my family loved their ice cream but I ordered banana ice cream with hot fudge and they clearly gave me chocolate syrup. It was cold and watery. When I asked about it the girl told me I just get it from the warmer. She must have been 16 or something. But hot fudge is thick and sticks to your spoon. I showed her that what ever they put on my ice cream was syrup. I like Somerset Creamery better.
google avatar

Pandora W.

Yelp
I love this place! They have amazing ice cream! The girls there deserve better tips! The tip jar was empty when I was there! If you come here please leave the girls better tips! There's only 5 of them and they need it for college! It's well worth it!
google avatar

Sherri P.

Yelp
Best Ice cream Around !! I have to stay away, I'm in love with all the flavors and options available Can get very busy Utilize the pick-up option to avoid the long lines in the summer
google avatar

Kristen H.

Yelp
Only icecream place I visit. Boston cream pie is my fave. Great with allergies.

Michelle L.

Yelp
This is by far the best ice cream place around. We live in the area and frequent this establishment very often. Two of my children worked here during High School/College. The owners are wonderful people and provide a safe work environment to all that work there. They also are very active in helping the community. Again, best ice cream around. My favorites, Chocolate Almond Yogurt, Coconut Almond Joy, and Cranberry Harvest!
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Really fun recent experience here! This is the perfect summer spot or after dinner treat! There is some seating in a park like setting on the side of the parking lot and a bit more near the door. So many flavors to choose from with careful options for allergies and samples provided of any choice. I love how they take special care of people with allergies! My ice cream and cone both tasted amazing with fresh ingredients! I ordered the sweet cream with Reese's cups. Super yummy! I will definitely be back when in town again!

Adrian P.

Yelp
Good food and great service nice place to eat and the mood was vibrant and nice had a good time there
google avatar

Emily D.

Yelp
Acushnet Creamery is really, really solid. I have gone for cones with friends and also purchased ice cream to take home. Boston Cream Pie and Raspberry Serenity are my faves, but my friends' flavors have all been good too. Can't beat the waffle cones. Parking is a bit rough, particularly in the summer, but nothing outrageous, and they take credit cards!
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Best ice cream around. You will not want any other once you've tried Acushnet Creamery.
google avatar

Lan T.

Yelp
The ice cream was amazing! Curbside pickup and easy ordering process!! Staffs were nice and friendly. You can order on website or app or call. The phone number to call and order is at every parking spot in the parking lot. You can't miss it!! My kids said it's the best ice cream they've ever had in their lives!!
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
Best gelato outside Florence, Italy. I got the salted caramel and toasted almond. I recommend getting two flavors.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Overall this place is amazing! Maybe a Kyle bit of a line in the dinner time but goes by quick and great service! I drive a hour for it in the summer at least half dozen times if I'm in the area!

Cam C.

Yelp
I will never eat at this place because it is very nasty, all the customers that go there are so rude same with the employees you can never find good employees these days they mostly have attitude and they never give full commitment too the job. why even work there if you don't like it??
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Awesome flavors and great staff! So glad that they are now open year-round! Ice cream cake is calling my name...might make up an occasion so I can order another soon :)
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
The cherry chunk is to die for. Have it in a waffle cone and you'll think you did and went to heaven
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Tons of flavors! Endless combinations with great sundae option toppings to make it unique. We do have a similar creamery near us but decided to check out this one on a whim and although it is farther out, if we are ever out there we will go back.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream store. Huge selection of flavors with four different sizes of cones or cups. I had the no sugar maple walnut and it was delicious. Nice young people are the helpful staff. Definitely recommended.

MrsG G.

Yelp
Took this photo while driving by ...... I must have been buying the wrong flavor in the past. They are not accepting cash so you have to order/prep-pay online. All of the parking spaces were taken and the line outside, was down the street andof the best to see a line like this.... so very long!!!! Has to be the best ice cream to wait in a line that long! Please consider following me if you like my reviews ! ty
google avatar

Yelp
This is not a place to go to if you have an allergy.... If you have a milk allergy You walk in and see that you have 2 "non-dairy" options- a raspberry sorbet and a "non-dairy" Oreo coffee ice cream made with oat milk... well then you are excited as ever and walk up to the counter to be told "we don't have a "back up bucket" and have been scooping dairy ice cream with the same spoon as the "non-dairy" ice cream all day..... please tell me what the heck the point of that is.... Oh yeah to appease the oat milk trend not to make sure people with allergies can eat here... a little advice to the owner: don't advertise something as dairy free if it isn't actually free of dairy (once dairy ice cream has gotten into the mix of non-dairy, it's is officially dairy ice cream) my family loves this place (they don't have allergies) but considering I would have to call ahead of time to see if their "dairy free" is actually dairy free that day, I think I'll pass.

Mel V.

Yelp
Pretty good ice cream for the price and in this area. There has been a quality change since their expansion but nothing abhorrent. Be prepared for a long line / wait time.
google avatar

Katie R.

Yelp
Absolute. HEAVEN. Do you want to hear what the absolute best ice cream concoction is? Well, let me tell you! It is chocolate mint Oreo ice cream in a waffle cone. It's as if it was sent directly down from heaven. That's how good it is.

Holly H.

Yelp
My all time favorite ice cream shop in the surrounding area... they also have great service
google avatar

Jess S.

Yelp
Best local ice cream around. If you haven't been there, you're missing out. Wide variety of flavors and soft serve

Taylor K.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Their waffle cones are SO good! Definitely try Brownie Points or Raspberry Serenity!

WanderLove L.

Yelp
The ice cream is delicious! Expect a long line, but know it will move in a timely fashion, and it's totally worth the wait. I had the cranberry walnut ice cream and it was heavenly. We were just traveling through and I'm bummed I can't get this flavor anywhere else in the U.S.

Matthew M.

Yelp
Best homemade ice cream you will ever have been going there for years and the handmade cakes are to die for
google avatar

Yelp
We went on a Thursday at 5:00, and even at that time it was fairly busy. This didn't mean waiting in a line, but it did mean that the place wasn't empty. We effectively had to drive through "the hood" to get here, but the pick was great. They have a limited selection of chocolate-based ice creams (a lot of their chocolate selections are coffee-based), but their specialty sundaes make up the difference and more. I personally got an Oreo "Nor'easter", which is effectively a DQ Blizzard combined with an Awful Awful (a treat without a place; would not recommend), but just getting a taste of everyone else's sundaes saved the visit entirely. The ice cream is all homemade, and the menus are descriptive. Pretty much all you could want from an ice cream place.
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
Best creamery around! So many incredible flavors that I need to try! I want to get every flavor whenever I'm there. The staff is always super nice and the storefront is adorable. It has such a chill and homey New England vibe. I'd be here all the time if I could! I'm so glad I discovered Acushnet Creamery.
google avatar

Lina J.

Yelp
My daughter has a Special request for ice cream cake from here for her confirmation party. Good thing we ordered extra because it was so good that our guest all had 2nds and thirds! Purple cow Oreo cake was yummy! And peanut butter crunch was our 2nd flavor. I was disappointed that I didn't have extras left over for later. Guess I'll have to get another one! Wish we didn't have to order them 2 weeks ahead of time!

Yelp
I recently heard of this place when someone posted a picture on facebook and after looking at the website and seeing the flavors, I knew I had to check it out. I was in Dartmouth today and checked and it said 16 minutes away, so thanks to GPS I was able to find it easily.. Very nice shop, easy to find, plenty of parking (on a weekday.. I'm sure weekends are different!) very friendly service and a huge variety of flavors to choose from. I have a feeling I'll be coming here a lot this summer! I tried the coffee kat (coffee ice cream with kit kat's) and the caffeine crunch (coffee ice cream with espresso beans) both were awesome, but I'd drive an hour each way just for the kit kat one!! Well worth the trip!
