The Best Breakfast Dishes in Melbourne and Where to Eat Them | Eater

"This Fitzroy spot serves a croquette-like potato hash stacked with mushrooms, onions, and an egg, offering a hearty, composed take on the local potato-hash trend." - Audrey Bourget

It’s like they knew I was coming. Rolled up at 8am exactly and was seated immediately with zero fuss. I’d just seen Oasis the night before but they didn’t know that, and yet I enjoyed a full Oasis playlist during my entire meal. Coffee was astoundingly good. Went for the eggs on toast option at $14, with an extra $6 for an absolute stack of bacon on the side. For $20, it’s incredibly good value. Service was impeccable and the staff super friendly and happy to chat. Just good vibes all round. Couldn’t recommend Addict enough. What an awesome cafe. I’ll be visiting again for sure. Probably tomorrow.

It was a peaceful and cozy cafe in Fitzroy. I had French toasts and matcha latte and it made my day:) I saw next table had egg Benedict and also looked good so will try that something savory. Staffs are also friendly.

The batch brew that I had here was nice. At the end, I also tried croquette which was on the special menu and I really enjoyed it as well. Quiet, cozy, good place to enjoy weekend treat for myself.

If you’re in or around Fitzroy and looking for an unforgettable brunch spot, Addict Food & Coffee is an absolute must-try. The brunch menu is a standout — every dish looks like a piece of art and tastes just as good. Thoughtful presentation, balanced flavours, and generous portions make it easy to see why this place is always buzzing. The coffee is exceptional — rich, smooth, and clearly made by people who know their beans. Definitely a notch above most places in Melbourne, which says a lot. Although we didn’t get to try their ramen bar (it transforms into one later in the day), it’s already on our list for next time. But for brunch lovers, Addict hits all the right notes.

This cafe is cozy and comfortable and the staff greeted me with a warm smile and great service. I tried the potato & provolone croquette from their spring special and it was delicious. The coffee was also amazing and it was hard to not keep ordering more!

I went to Addict the other day and had a great Melbourne Cafe experience. The staff, the food and the atmosphere were so fantastic. I can thoroughly recommend this great little cafe in Fitzroy

Google
It is a small restaurant but they have no shortage of unique, mouth-watering delicacy. The place was clean, staff were super friendly, and the service was fast even during the busy rush.

Yelp
Brunch was once a meal I used to look forward to and now it has become a disappointing affair. Poached eggs and corn fritters don't make me happy anymore. Neither does sub par quality. All of which I experienced at addict. We waited 20 minutes for a table in the rain. My mocha tasted like hot milk with no taste of coffee. The corn fritters were dry and tasteless and the tomato kasundi didn't assist with any flavours as it was quite bland. Corn fritters don't go with poached eggs. Why? The tiny amount of onion and tomato salad with coriander leaves helped to some extent in making my meal not taste so average. The tiny bit of fried haloumi was nice. We were shuttled out as soon as our tables were cleared. Average food, below average coffee, and sub par service.

Yelp
Excellent example of Melbourne cafe supremacy in Fitzroy. Minimal yet cosy inside, wonderful varied menu and of course excellent coffee. I had smashed avo with a side of smoked salmon, which was delicious. Very relaxed and friendly staff. Top notch

Yelp
A group of us shared 4 savouries and 2 sweet brekkie say Addict and most dishes were amazing. The corn fritters w haloumi was great, although I would like to see more haloumi. The eggs that accompanied it was perfectly poached. The hash and mushroom dish was beautiful as well, although I would say there were too much mushroom bits even for a mushroom lover like me. The cheese kransky breakfast is the same, too much mushroom bits but I love the crispy bacon and cheesey kransky. The thing that really shined is the coconut pana cotta and the chocolate pancakes. They were both beautifully presented and was a decadent finish to our meal.

Yelp
Absolutely epic breakfast here! I had a special, the chili scrambled eggs and it was different and yummy. The vibe in there is really positive, the staff are nice. Win, win, win. Would come again!

Yelp
As if the Fitzroy cafe options didn't cause enough "where should we go for coffee/breakfasts/lunch?" dilemmas, Addict should now be firmly set in your shortlist. The coffee is solid. The menu is diverse and goes beyond the standards eggs and bacon options. Vegetarian seem to be well catered for - Northern Beans with poached eggs and confit tomatoes or the Potato Hash with mushroom duxelle got the thumbs up from meatosaurs eating at our table. Crumpets come with a pat of Pepe Saya butter and the cutest jars of house made preserves, or go all out and order them topped with smoked salmon, spinach and poached eggs. So bloody good. For those of the sweet persuasion, there's the fluffiest pancakes you will ever have topped with poached quince and mascarpone. They're "wholemeal" which is supposed to make you feel better about the overdose of sugar I guess. Kids can score a pancake, topped with icecream for a paltry $6 (or an egg on toast or rugrat-sized porridge). The lunch menu is appealing with salads, sandwiches (using Zeally Bay Sourdough) and seasonally appropriate mains of confit duck, pork belly or pulled pork. A cold winter's day getting stuck in to these while reading the paper sounds like the ideal scenario to me. So, who wants to go for lunch?

Yelp
I came here for a lunch meeting as I was keen to check this place out and on seating they remarked "Is this your favourite local?". It was my first time there, but that is the vibe that this cafe gives. A bright, welcoming space that locals will quickly acquaint themselves with and become regulars. Coffee was decent and the menu was really interesting. I ordered the wholemeal gnocchi and was delighted at how jam-packed the dish was with vegetables. Overloaded with peas and beans and greenery, it looked as good as it tasted (unfortunately my hasty snap was too blurry to post!). The style reminded me of a St. Ali dish, so I wasn't surprised on further research that there are two ex-St Ali chefs in the kitchen. I grabbed a snap of my lunch buddy's dish too as it was almost like a pretty dessert, but packed full of things like chia seeds and puffed buckwheat so it was more nourishing than it looked. While it's in no way local to me, I would happily make a habit of coming here.

Yelp
Loved the cafe, I found the portions a little small at first, but was filling! Just be careful sitting outside if it's windy, we had a bit of a flying garnish situation. :) Oh, and I'd like to compliment the person who made my chai from scratch with lots of spices!

Yelp
I had brekkie here on Sunday, a friend of mine wanted to return after Yoga and I'd never tried it so I thought I'd give it a shot. I wasn't disappointed. Over the past couple of weeks, we've been exploring Fitzroy cafes and it's been really good. Addict was no different. It's a great spot, cool design, vibrant and buzzing. The staff are very nice and this is reflected in the level of service that we received. My flat white was good and, after going over the menu about 10 times and wrestling between the Pulled Pork Burger, Pork Belly and Ocean Trout; I elected to have the Go Green Breakfast w/ Mushrooms. The verdict? Good choice, it was really nice. I highly recommend it and I will definitely return.

Yelp
Went for brunch and was not disappointed. The tea, coffee, and food was delicious. We had the Go Green breakfast and the Eggs Benedict. The "go green" veggies were probably the most unexpectedly wonderful part of the meal. The servers were friendly and we will definitely go back again.

Yelp
Awesome coffee, awesome food. Can't get enough of their Kim Chi Scramble. A special, special meal. Bit busy at time and may include a wait, but its vibrant location makes that totally fine by me.

Yelp
I was super excited to eat here. The food was SO bad. The bread was from a packet (definitely do not get the GF) I switched to sourdough and it was burnt and stale. The eggs were okay, but the whole plate was covered in grease even though I asked for a very clean meal (just eggs avo and kale!). My partner got the sun in law eggs and is now sick. There was an entire pot of mayo piled on top of deep fried eggs. The eggs were over done and the whole plate was just coverrrrred in grease and mayo. The staff were kind but didn't understand what we ordered. I'm now feeling quite sick.

Yelp
Great coffee, donuts from all day donuts. had the special smashed avo/fetta with eggs. was delicious i can see why the locals love this place

Carlotta H.

Yelp
Great ambiance here. The waitstaff was amazing and food as well. Both my friend and I had the fried chicken burger and with its asian twist it was so good. Didn't get to try the coffee but next time I defintely will.

Yelp
Arguably one of the best meals I've had in Melbourne yet. Locals tell me it's one of the best brunch spots in the city and I can see why. Their dishes are amazing! Order the specials if you go on the weekends. Everything on the menu is worth trying!

Orla D.

Yelp
Addict is our number one stop for breakfast in Melbourne. The menu is nice and simple and doesn't oversell itself but when your dish is served you get so much more than you'd expect. Simple ingredients are plated up as fine dining but the flavour is there too. Just be aware that service can be quite slow so it may not be the best choice if you're in a rush but if you're having a lazy morning the food is totally worth the wait-plus you can treat yourself to a cookie while you wait!

Yelp
I love this place. Two visits and they've smashed it out of the park on both occasions. I can certainly see myself becoming an Addict addict. Super friendly service, matched with seriously delicious (and different) food and well made coffee. Tick, tick, TICK! The mushroom and potato dish is delicious and rich. And that bircher? So much yumminess. I am definitely coming back to sample more of this menu. Cool fit out, friendly staff. Yep, addicted.

Yelp
Imagine all the best dishes Melbourne cafes now serve, and I reckon Addict puts them all into one menu. Even after 10 minutes deliberating over it, suggestions from the waiter, I still couldn't make a choice when it come to ordering. Thankfully my girlfriend and I wanted the same thing, so we were able to share a corn fritters (with poached eggs, kasundi and haloumi) and a eggs benedict (with special smoked ham hock and tarragon hollandaise). Geez they were both amazing! Along with that the coffee was great, with many options from the talented baristas. Service was great, and it is a beautifully laid out floor plan (suits both large and small groups), with windows covering two sides, which definitely provides a great atmostsphere. I highly recommend everyone to try out Addict if you haven't been there before.

Yelp
Out for a morning ride on the motorbike, with my lovely lady on the back, and we passed what seemed to be a busy place on a section of Johnston St, that does not really have much in the way of food. We pulled in to the sweet smell of coffee, sat promptly and ordered my usual (Long Black with Cold Milk on the Side) the coffee was quick to be served, and much like the smell wafting out the door, it was delicious. We then ordered food, a share plate for the two of us, Wholemeal Gnocchi. The waitress explained that this was not a big meal to be shared, unlike a normal Gnocchi dish, this was more a salad, with some Gnocchi on it. After waiting for 1 hr, yes 1 hr, our food arrived. I am very glad I did not order two, meals as I dod not have that much time to wait, A couple that ordered directly after us, still had not received their meal when we left. That said the food was beautiful. Fresh and light, with the depth of the Gnocchi, this was perfect for a semi warm day. Perfectly seasoned, it suited the hipster atmosphere. Hats off to the chef for the creation, however when compared to the wait, I think the wait is what I will remember. Being so spilt for choices in Melbourne, I think these days poor service is inexcusable. Especially since there was not a line out the door, just most tables full.

Yelp
We'd been wanting to try Addict for a while. Everything I'd read about it just made me want to visit. We arrived just after opening time at 7am and quickly settled in. This is one of those places where you feel instantly comfortable because of the pleasantness of the cafe surroundings and the cheeriness of the staff. We immediately ordered coffee. The coffee is carefully and expertly made and went over beautifully. I ordered the big breakfast. Channelling the views of a famous person once, I'm in awe of myself for making such an inspired menu choice. This is a very creatively composed dish. There's so much I liked about it that it's hard to list and I felt a deep and profound sense of regret when I finished it. We liked our server very much. Such a mightily efficient and pleasant person. She is a credit to her craft and we left an appropriate tip. Addict is a wonderful place. The current 4.4 rating is richly deserved.

Yelp
The food and vibe here are great, with chilled out music and friendly staff to complement a nicely varied menu. Quinoa fritters were on point.

Yelp
Hash and mushrooms amaze as was the eggs Benedict and service was so friendly and attentive. We ordered after a large group but we got our food first which is always awesome. New fav in fitzroy and its humming! Queues already on Sunday morning

Yelp
I was curious about this new establishment, having read a review on Timeout. However, I was disappointed to say the least. It was a cruisey Monday morning and they were hardly under the pump. They had three members of staff who all seemed unusually stressed considering they were only catering for a few tables. The service was painfully slow in both taking our orders and our food was left on the counter in full view for over 5 minutes before being brought over. That being said, their coffee was delicious as were their cakes. New establishment though, definitely has potential.
