Madeira, Portugal, Dining Guide to the Food & Drink Scene - Eater

"Perched at the top of a mountain at the edge of one of Madeira’s only remaining old-growth forests, this bucolic lodge-like restaurant specializes in hearty, homey, meaty Portuguese dishes served in rustic clay crockery. Adega do Pomar is linked to an apple orchard, so don’t miss chef and owner Márcio Nóbrega’s delicious and boundary-pushing house-made ciders." - Austin Bush

An awesome place, with some of the tastiest food we've had in Madeira. The place is very typical, the environment and views are great. One of those places you feel like there's no time involved and you just experience the moment. For starters we stayed with the bread and fresh cheese. Our toddler had a chicken soup cup (delicious). Then we chose the 1kg rib with rice, oven sweet potato and vegetables. Everything delicious. Unfortunately, no room was left for deserts, unless the season fruit for the toddler, which was sliced specially for the smaller ones. One of the must try places when in Madeira. You won't regret.

The best restaurant in Madeira…. We came here 2 days in a row!!! The beef rib dish was to die for. And the seasoning reminded me of my hometown. I loved the chicken pot soup too, perfect food after a hike!

Very tasty and traditional food with great service and a nice ambiance. We had the best beef and chicken espetadas (skewers) on Madeira, a plate of vegetables, bolo do caco (garlic bread) and homemade poncha (rum mix) for a good price. It was pretty full (Saturday evening - no reservation) but they let us wait at the outside seating for 10 min until there was a free seat.

Loved the place for three reasons, service that aspires to a professional level, Portuguese food from the continent (which is hard to find on the island), and the atmosphere. It is above average pricing but that is reflected in the quality. Wine is good too.

Food was very good. We had the 40hr slow cooked meat. We ate it with 2, but 3 is better. It is a lot! But super delicious! The cider is out of this world, so many flavours. Never tasted something like it.

Seemingly simple dishes with with very good ingredients, cooked to perfection - best meat food so far from this island for us. Very professional and friendly staff, who made us feel like home. Somehow got a feeling that they were in a positive way proud of what they do and deliver in this place with a comfy rustic atmosphere. I visited the place with my teenager kid, as we like to eat in places that are harder to travel to, hence less people around, and with something to remember in the atmosphere. We both loved our different meat dishes to the point that we scrubbed the very last drops of the meat sauces with our sweet potato slices, with dumb smiles in our faces. This alone would have made us fully satisfied, but then also the desserts were far better than anything we've tasted here in the island. The prices are above average (still not steep), but I'm happy to pay for good quality food like this. What can I say, probably going to rent a motorcycle and going back again in a few days to try some of the other meat dishes. The only negative for me was the silent tv in the corner (kinda does not fit the surroundings), hence minus one star in the armosphere - but hey this is Madeira, football is big here :) Edit: visited the restaurant again, ordered different meals and desserts - again everything was top notch. Also tasted the home brew cider, which was good as well.

We went here for a quick drink between our hike and were surprised. The bar area on the side was fabulous. They gave us a small chicken plate to go with our drinks and it was delicious and felt like a good home cooked snack. The music and the vibes were on point. We wanted to come back but couldn’t during this visit. Special shoutout to the server at the bar, he was such a patient kind man.

Very lovely place! The service is spectacular as if it's a 5 star hotel! Our waiter was so patient with 100 questions and all special requests. The food was just perfect, big generous portions, flavourful dishes! For the vegan option they made out of the menu dish - vegetables on grill with sweet potatoes! It was wow! We were beyond happy after the dinner here! Highly recommended!
