Best Restaurants and Wineries in Stonewall, Texas | Eater Austin

"Another day, another great Hill Country winery dedicated to Texas wines in Stonewall. This time, it’s the newer winery from the Bilger family. The tasting room offers mostly reds with some whites for on-site flights bookable online. And for food, there’s its food truck La Cozinha with pizza, salad, charcuterie boards, and mushroom risotto. The winery is also all about giving back — it donates 10 percent of its profiles to area nonprofits and organizations, and it also offers a college scholarship for students looking to learn more about winemaking. There are indoor and outdoor areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

Amazing winery! One of my favorites. The wine is probably the best in hill country and the staff is so friendly and accommodating. We had our reception for our wedding here and it was the perfect space for a family friendly gathering! They even have a food truck onsite with some of the best pizza I’ve had anywhere!

Google
What a great vineyard! Staff was super friendly and welcoming. Expansive outdoor space and beautiful indoor seating. They are pet friendly and would love for you to bring more kitties! ;-) Wine was flawless. They offer flights, full pours and bottles. Food truck on premise with wood fired pizza. Absolutely loved this place and can’t wait to come back!

My party was 11 people and we also had minors (18) with us (originally we were 14 in total). This is the only winery in Fredericksburg (technically stonewall, tx) that allows for minors to actually sit with you vs sitting in a separate room (believe me when I say I called EVERY SINGLE ONE). We were celebrating my marriage from the day before and I really wanted all of us to be able to sit together. Wines were great and the service was great. I love that there was a food truck on site and that we could get actual meals if we wanted to (which we did!). We are a Hispanic family and love that we were treated with so much respect, as anyone should be! I mention that last portion because there are places in Fredericksburg that are partial with certain kinds of people and we are THANKFUL this wasn’t one of them. I will be recommending this place to everyone and cannot wait myself to go back! Absolutely fantastic experience!

Google
Such a cool space, inside and out! Very inviting and the staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Great place to spend the day and enjoy a few bottles with friends. Be sure to grab a pizza at the food truck too. Best pizza I've had in a while!

Google
Great winery in the Stonewall area and a short distance off the US 290. The tasting room and patio areas are very comfortable and the employees are knowledgeable and friendly. My only issue is the signage getting there could be better. Enjoy this beautiful Winery.

We are fans of Portugal wines. This is a great place to enjoy native Portugal grapes. The tasting room is amazing. Pets friendly. Outstanding service.

Yelp
I had... SO MUCH FUN... at this winery. And I didn't expect it. The day of the eclipse was uncharted territory for everyone...businesses and customers alike, so these tickets that we bought to stay all day promised an idea of sorts but who knew what was REALLY going to happen day of. Adega Vinho came through in the clutch on the day of uncertainty and was the perfect safe haven for everyone. The whole experience, combined with the eclipse, was phenomenal. I'm from Texas but I've lived in California for the past 20+ years, so of course I have a California wine palate. The wines here are very good, a few were a little astringent, but the Mandechuva was excellent, and I think that other people with a California wine palate would agree. I wrote NOTHING down and it all happened so fast, but I believe this one was a Cabernet/Mourvèdre/Syrah (maybe) blend???...that was a tad fruit forward, and given enough time to breathe, WOW. Wow wow wow...it made me proud to be Texan. It made me want to take credit. For some reason, the winery kept promoting the Tempranillo, the Perdesol (?) and a few other wines...and I know Tempranillo grows well in Texas...but the Mandechuva was really something special and I hope the winery takes time to bring it to the forefront in the future. The winery itself is spacious, with a relaxing patio full of seating, plenty of shade from the heat and lovely grounds that are well kept. The tasting room was immaculate and the bathrooms were maintained very well considering the crowd present for the eclipse. They served us breakfast, lunch and dinner, all catered by a French chef from Burgundy. The weather was overcast/partly sunny, but we managed to get so lucky to see every stage of the eclipse through breaks in the clouds and the moment of the eclipse was magical. We missed nothing. I'm so happy my friend from California found this spot, and now that I'm here for what seems like forever, my plan is to bring everyone to Stonewall, TX, with me to experience this place. The staff, the experience, the wines, all of it, everything was just phenomenal.

Yelp
Adega Vinho was one of the three wineries we visited when we were in the area along 290 earlier this month, and I'm glad we put it on our list and made a reservation. We stopped by a cold weekday afternoon, and the tasting room wasn't busy, but we were greeted right away (the staff member who assisted us with our tasting was lovely, friendly, helpful) and told to take a seat anywhere we liked. The décor in the tasting room is different from most I've visited - almost modern but with midcentury modern décor. It was cozy, informal - definitely a place you can hang for hours with friends. (We didn't eat but they have a food truck, so you definitely can spend hours here!) I had picked Adega Vinho over other wineries in the area because I loved that it seemed to be a smaller, family-owned operation and because they have a modern, progressive philosophy when it comes to wine (low intervention, organic when possible). They also grow some less common grapes (many mostly grown in Portugal - like arinto and touriga), which is another way they separate themselves from the many other wineries that wonderful area of 290. We enjoyed our tasting very much (6 wines, reds, whites, and rose); the wines we tasted, to the service, to the ambiance - everything was stellar. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
There's over 100 wineries on the '290 Wine Road', so we relied on the Yelp recommendation to pick our first winery, Adega Vinho. The staff was really friendly and we were attended by Jeremy that was a great host. We chatted freely about wine and enjoyed the Portuguese inspired wines. The highlight was the Rose and the 2020 Tourgia that was great now and expect it to age to even a more fantastic wine. Definitely would put Adega Vinho on your check list to try if you come to this area for wine tastings.

Yelp
This vineyard is marked by a modern, somewhat hipster-ish / industrial feeling tasting room - maybe "modern Hill Country." It's living-room comfortable here, regardless of the label! We visited as the last stop on a day of visiting a few vineyards in the region, and the Pordosol was my favorite wine of the day. We only tasted reds when we were there, and along with the outstanding, deeply flavored Pordosol, two others also were excellent - the very good Cuvee Carinho (which reminded me of a light Pinot Noir), and the rich Temranillo. (Two others were a bit too much on the fruity side for me.) The staff members were warm, friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable across everyone with whom we interacted. They are such caring, passionate people, about their product as well as their guests. These are vintners who are committed to their own wine as much as furthering the collective wine capabilities in the region, which is reflected in their products, facility, and stories. I look forward to returning!

Yelp
We stopped in for a tasting on a Sunday. It was busy, but we were greeted immediately. They have multiple small "living room" areas, each with a different feel, style, and size. It's a great vibe. We were seated and given a brief introduction to the wines and the philosophy of the winery. Jeremy was our guide for the tasting. He was knowledgeable and friendly. Our favorite wines were the 2020 Pordosol and the 2022 Viognier.

Yelp
Family-owned Adega Vinho is even more of a delight to visit than when it first opened in 2020. The sunny patio is decked out with furniture, complementing the ample seating under the shade trees. A food truck serves delicious mushroom risotto and pizza from a wood-fired oven. You'll find only Texas wines here, with a few estate wines almost always available. Specialties include dry rosé, tempranillo, tannat and viogner. Staff members are friendly, knowledgeable and always happy to tell you more about the vintages they're pouring. Well worth the short (~1 mile) jog off the beaten path of US 290.

Yelp
We were not told the only sitting option will be outside at 2:00 pm, after an hour of waiting the staff told us the only table available is outside in a 90 degree day. Staff didn't seem to care about customer at all. Do not recommend!

Yelp
A friend invited me to this winery, I have to say how terribly disappointed I am. Wine seemed very off (hard to put a name on what funky taste it had) and the service seemed dismissive. There are plenty of other options to pick from.

Yelp
Newcomer to Texas wineries. Hostess was very friendly and helpful. Great knowledge of the art of wine making. Generous tasting with detailed descriptions of each wine. Highly recommended.

Yelp
This was our favorite winery on our trip down to Hill Country - both the service and the wines. Rob is one of the best tasting room staffers I've encountered in our travels - it's great to just talk about the winery, share our stories about wine travel, and just shoot the breeze. He was really knowledgeable about the industry in Texas in particular, which we really appreciated coming from the Pacific Northwest. He spent the entire tasting with us - which was great! I think we only got that kind of attention on our trip down to Mendoza and at places like Charles Melton and Ballycroft in Australia. I especially appreciated Rob's recommendations of where else to visit - as helpful as Yelp is, the pourers are going to know where to send you based on what you like/don't like. His suggestions were right on the money. I think the choice of going with Portuguese varietals and styles of wine was really smart on the winemaker's and owner's part. It fits the climate a lot better than trying to force a bunch of Bordeaux varietals that require a lot of luck to successfully yield a good vintage. Everything was really good and well balanced... which is something I found hard to consistently find on this trip. It's also a nice niche as Touriga isn't super common (at least yet) in the US. In any event - they are a no brainer to add to your list if you're visiting Texas Hill Country for wine.

Yelp
We did a tasting here- everyone seemed to already know everyone else, so a very friendly vibe. The guy who did our tasting was, similarly, very friendly and actually quite informative. He took his time explaining each and every wine in great detail. Great fun for us... That said, I'll be the first to tell you that I'm not into tempranillo or mourvèdre as the main grape for any red wine (usually these are supporting cast, not the main stars). So I wasn't really into any of their wines featuring these grapes. But they did produce a merlot which was so, so tasty. We even bought a bottle- enjoyed the hell out of it later with dinner too. Great find- ask for that merlot. Excellent bottle in the middle of a lesser known wine country.

Yelp
Came here on. dreary Sunday afternoon, good spirits, small crowd, who unfortunately missed out on the Awesome trip playing, I believe it was Acoustic 57, wonderful vibe, played great even tho venue was lacking people. I love it when they are playing at various venues!

Yelp
We are locals so we are always looking to try new wineries. I had some friends in town so we decided to go here. AMAZING! The wine, service and atmosphere was awesome. Our server was very knowledgeable and kind. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Sweet, family-owned winery in Stonewall, just a short drive from Fredericksburg! Overall, the staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating considering most of my group was 15 minutes late to our winery appointment (oops!). The tasting room is pretty, quaint and tucked away in the countryside. Their wine was pretty good, the Tempranillo being the most impressive! Admittedly, most of their wines (all whites and roses) were sold out so my tasting was limited. Reason for 4-star review instead of 5: - Tasting pours were genuinely small. For $20/person you would expect more than two small sips per tasting but every place has their pour amount. Special shoutout to Whitney, she was awesome and made our group crack up laughing!
google avatar

Tracy O.

Yelp
Amazing service, pizza was great and the wine was outstanding. Best Rose I've ever had! Napa and Paso could learn something from this winery. Thank you Whitney!

Lindsey K.

Yelp
This is labeled a winery (if you searched on Yelp for food it wouldn't show up) but WOW did they have great food. The truffle mushroom risotto was incredible. So was the pizza. We've eaten at several of the fine dining options in Fredericksburg proper; Adega's on-site food truck (which was a pretty fancy food truck, to be fair) blew them all out of the water with the risotto alone. Great service, friendly owner, great outdoor patios and sitting areas. We also love their wine! To Adega- if you got your food truck to show up as a food option on Yelp or Google, I think you would bring in even more business! We've been to Stonewall several times and, after a long day of wineries, are often looking for great food that doesn't require us driving all the way into Fredericksburg and having a reservation. We can't believe we didn't know about this gem! Will definitely be back. Thanks for being awesome!

Yelp
We're wine club members. Really enjoy their whites and the laid back setting. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
Love Adega! The welcoming tasting room has a unique modern design from the industrial outside to the custom inside wood textures and open space. Equally welcoming is their incredible team (cheers Michael, Jeremy and Whitney)! Adega Vinho produces small batch wines with 100% Texas-grown fruit. Part of their mission includes using 100% Estate grown fruit. The Estate Vineyard is 12.5 acres and the Bilger Family Vineyard is currently growing Tempranillo, Mourvedre, Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Franc, Arinto, Alvarinho, Souzao, Tinta Cão & Sangiovese. Here are the wines we experienced: Branca Verde 2021, a nice refreshing blend of their Estate Arinto and some Chardonnay from Texas Hills in Johnson City. Mourvèdre Réserve 2018, I enjoy the spice and berry notes with a hint of cherry on this wine. Dry, tannic yet perfectly balanced. Cuvee Carinho 2019, the name means "Blend of Affection". The Tempranillo & Merlot. blend is pleasantly fruit forward. Mourvèdre Estate 2019, notably lighter body compared to the 2018 Reserve with notes of berry and cherry. Tempranillo Estate 2019, this is their first vintage of Estate Tempranillo! This beautifully complex wine earned a Double Gold winner at the San Antonio Rodeo. Tempranillo OE 2019, One Elm Vineyard Note, they will be releasing a couple of new rosés style wines this spring perfect for sipping on their beautiful patio! Even more notably, the Bilger Family believes in giving back to their community with a scholarship program.

Yelp
A beautiful newer winery just off of the beaten 290 path. The style of the tasting room is very unique and very beautiful. Inside you will find a contemporary look with nice wood furniture and small wine tables. The outside offers plentiful seating in comfortable furnishings along with shade umbrellas to cover you from the bright Texas sun. The wine are fantastic and even though I prefer red wines, the Viognier is amazing. This is a perfect porch wine for a hot summer day and if you chose to, It could be paired with grilled poultry, boiled shrimp and many other delicious foods. Definitely worth pulling off of the main drag and visiting some other winery than the MEGAVINES that you see and that are not nearly as relaxing, personable and beautiful as Adega Vinho is. I am very much in to port wines and the fact that they have a plan for future batches is exciting.
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
This is my new favorite winery! The wine is fantastic. My favorite was the pordosol -- we bought several bottles to go. It is smooth but not overly so. The staff was super friendly and building is awesome. Very cool place to hang out, unlike some others built on 290 with lots of traffic noise or where you are drinking in the parking lot. Also unlike other wineries this is comparatively affordable. We will definitely be back!!

Holly B.

Yelp
Wonderful winery in the hill country. The atmosphere is mid-century modern with great art and music, a nice differentiator from other wineries in the area. The wine was delicious and the service amazing. They even pointed out some great spots to sit, as we were worried our dogs may bark at cows on the neighboring property. Food truck onsite too.
google avatar

Yelp
Been here 3 times now - twice for tastings and once for a glass. Each time has been such a great experience- wonderful service and absolutely amazing wines. Rye venue has a very mid century vibe with great outdoor seating. Highly recommend- one of my favs! Not usually a white fan but the Albariño is a winner. Love all of their reds - not a bad wine.

Melissa B.

Yelp
This was our second time to visit. We LOVED the wine. They were so accommodating to our party of 6 even though we did not have a reservation for a tasting. Cool ambience and the staff was so informative. We purchased wine to go and will visit again and recommend to friends!
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
Tempranillo 2017 and the cuvée were probably are favorites of this new winery. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We wanted to sit outside since it was so busy inside and allowed us to do a tasting in the patio. They have a lot of Spanish varieties. Seven different vines on the property. A small vineyard. Would recommend a try.
google avatar

Robin W.

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor space and tasting room. Great customer service. The wines were very good. We didn't try one we didn't like. My favorite was the 2016 Reserve Tempranillo. Highly recommend if you are in the Stonewall area and want some amazing wine.

Tim H.

Yelp
This is one of the best wineries in the hill country. Great wines, most are estate wines - fruit grown on premises super nice people too. A must-visit location.

T S.

Yelp
Amazing boutique winery!! Taylor shared flight of wines to fit our pallet. Left with 10 bottles to take home. Owner Andy was very friendly and knowledgeable. We tried to convince them to come to Grapefest to share with more people. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Nina H.

Yelp
Really great new place, family-owned by the Bilger Family and lots of personal attention from the two brothers who run the operation. The wines were tasty and made with love, my favorite was the 2017 Tempranillo, but try them all. They planted their vines in 2017, so within the next 3-6 months, they should have at least one estate wine. Nice tasting room, comfortable furniture, kids are welcome, and there is an outdoor patio. Laid back but taking their winemaking seriously and seem to be in this for the right reasons. This may just become one of our regular Hill Country stops, can't wait to watch them grow. Currently open Thursday through Sunday noon till 6pm.

Yelp
Delicious wines first and foremost. Contemporary , clean, friendly, informative, and great snacks. I highly recommend and will probably join their wine club.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the Pordosol, which was touted as a crowd favorite and did not disappoint. I love that there was plenty of outdoor seating to relax and sip and enjoy. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The staff here was amazing! We did not have reservations but they got us in anyway. The atmosphere was very family friendly and the architecture of their building was amazing! The wine was tasty and the again - the staff was THE BEST! We will definitely go back and spend time here!

Yelp
We enjoyed every part of our visit to Adega Vinho. This brand new winery has been a 30 year dream for the owners/winemakers. When you wait that long to see your dream come true, you make sure you do everything right - and they did! We loved their wines. We both decided on the 2017 Tempranillo, but then the Cuvée Carmesim won me over. This wine won Gold in the 2020 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, and Silver in the 2020 TX Wine Competition. The tasting room is large with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The decor is mid century modern, with Scandinavian architecture. You can see their vines from the road, but not the tasting room, so keep your eyes open for their drive. Such a great place!
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
On a recent trip to Fredericksburg we had the pleasure of visiting with the fabulous team, and owners at Adega Vinho. Their wine is amazing and the surroundings are beautiful. The next time you're in Hill Country it's well worth your time to go and visit with Andy and sample his wine..........try the Tempranillo 2017, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Dustin T.

Yelp
Off the beaten path, this winery sported some enjoyable wine on the last day of one of our visits. We sampled a few before purchasing two bottles and stayed to drink one outside. The staff was great and we really appreciated the service. Haven't cracked open the second bottle yet but anxiously await. Great setting and great experience. Can't wait to return!

Aanika D.

Yelp
Adega Vinho was such a wonderful winery - I would highly recommend this winery to anyone visiting the Texas wine country! They are doing some really interesting things with different and fun varietals, and I can't wait to come back again to try some of their Portuguese varietals! I appreciated how friendly, kind, and knowledgeable their whole staff was. They answered my onslaught of questions and you could tell that these people know what they were talking about! They had some of the best wines we tried on our wine tasting trip, and I would highly recommend stopping here for anyone who is serious about wine or just wants to taste some of the best wine Texas has to offer.

Robert M.

Yelp
We had an amazing time at Adega Vinho today with Jeremy. He was unbelievably knowledgeable about the wines and so much more. We will definitely go back. This is one Texas winery you should not miss..

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Stopped in because the one we were headed to was busy and had tour buses everywhere. Boy am I glad we did!!! The wines were wonderful and the service was phenomenal. They were extremely busy, but Rob was super attentive and made us feel like we were the only people there. Will definitely return when back in town.

Bob C.

Yelp
Warm welcome as we walked in, felt like a place you could get used to. Very informative, tasted some surprisingly good wines, really enjoyed our time in the venue! Will definitely come back, will definitely recommend this winery as it was recommended to us!!

Yelp
I had the pleasure of visiting while in town for some down time. A beautiful location with a modern esthetic. The wines we selected were interesting, server was very knowledgeable. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
The early beginnings of a family-owned boutique winery are perhaps the best times to visit. Everything is new, fresh and the owners are all too happy to tell you everything about their new place. There is no doubt that the Bilger Family's heart and soul is in their winery business. Andy and Elena Bilger as well as Andy's brother Michael, have put much love and wine thought into these big plans. The family broke ground on their dream of Adega Vinho, Portuguese for "Wine Cellar", in 2016 and planted their first vines the following year. Their estate vineyard primarily focuses on about 14 varieties of Portuguese and Italian grapes. Michael Bilger is certainly no stranger to Texas wines. He previously worked under Ron Yates and has now undertaken his own "attention to detail" in every aspect from growing fruit to crafting wine. Even though it is about a 50-acre estate, the current goal is to establish a sustainable and manageable 20 acres of grapevines. In addition to the vineyard management and wine quality, their goal is to keep production small at 3000 cases per year. With an on-site production facility, maintaining control over all aspects of wine production will be a must for controlling quality. The site was opened to the public in 2020. You will notice the majestic and beautiful vineyard when entering the estate followed by the well shaded oak grove in front of the tasting room. Upon entering the tasting room (besides being greeted by enthusiastic staff) you will likely be mesmerized by the trapezoidal architecture and eclectic art on the walls. Most of the wines currently being served are Texas High Plains sourced. There is nothing on the wine list that you will be displeased with in our opinion, they are all winners. The 2019 Viognier is a winning combination of fruit, minerality and butter that should make a white wine lover out of you! The 2020 Tempranillo Rosé is from the estate. You may be surprised at its full-bodied feel and creamy, smoky notes, but it is a Rosé. The Pordosol is a 50/50 blend of Mourvedre and Tempranillo. The softer taste and lighter red color help set the mood for an excellent sunset sipper. Their Italian wine, 2018 Sangiovese, has well balanced acids and a fruitiness with cocoa aromas. One of their early wines, the 2016 Syrah, is a real treat. This rich drinking red has great depth, some spicy notes with a hint of mint, and some lingering chalkiness. It is drinking well but go ahead and lay down some bottles for more surprise sipping in a few years. It seems Tannat is everywhere nowadays, but their dark colored 2018 Tannat is smooth with cherry aromas and a medium finish. Sourced from Newsom Vineyards, the 2018 Tempranillo is still fairly fruit forward with raspberry notes and a touch of smokiness. Get ready for a superb Mourvedre. The 2017 release is a reserve and explodes with herbal notes and cherries with a lingering tobacco and oak finish. Save the best for last and slowly enjoy the 2019 Grenache. With a hint of orange peel and cinnamon, you may be thinking how many bottles your significant other will let you purchase. The family has plans to offer a field blend of Tinta Cao in addition to a Touriga National. The owners and staff all feel strongly that Touriga's future is with their wines. It has been a long dry spell visiting new wineries with the 2020 pandemic, but this was the right visit to get back into the wine groove. This place is an extra special getaway from the busy US 290 corridor as it sits tucked in on a side road in a lovely quiet spot. It will be exciting to see what unfolds with the Bilger's piece of Hill Country terroir. We cannot wait to see what the future brings for this very bright beginning. Saúde!

Yelp
Unassuming from the road, but beautiful space and tasting room once you arrive. The wine was delicious and I truly appreciate how kind they were towards my 6 year old son. Must visit!

Yelp
Some of the best wines and nicest people in Fredericksburg. You owe it to yourself to put this place on your itinerary. Really exceptional.

Yelp
Beautiful property, unique wines and friendly staff. Loved the outside seating options. We would certainly visit again.l and recommend to those in the area.

Yelp
We loved our visit to this winery. It's quaint and has a modern vibe with great mid-century modern style. Great atmosphere and the rose' was a favorite!

J H.

Yelp
This winery is a short distance off Highway 290 near Hye. A friend of ours at another winery suggested this when we mentioned we wanted to try something new. Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable. The building is architecturally unique and a charm both inside and out. A couple of the wines were surprisingly good while others were average. I felt their wines were over-priced which is becoming more common along Highway 290. Not sure that we will return anytime soon as we would prefer to buy good wine to take home at a reasonable price versus just do a tasting; however, we could be back for another tasting someday.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
A little piece of CA wine country transplanted in Texas. Beautiful grounds, great people and wine. Worth a stop

Yelp
I had been reading and hearing such wonderful things about Adega Vinho. We happened to be close by, so I called to see if they could accommodate a tasting without a prior reservation. I was so happy when they informed me that they could accommodate us. When we arrived, we were promptly seated indoors at a lovely spot. It all went downhill from there. We waited and we waited and we waited. No one waited on us. No one brought us wine glasses for the tasting. Then we waited some more. Finally the person with whom I spoke on the phone with, asked if we were ok, and I informed him we were waiting for a tasting. Then we waited some more. The straw that broke the proverbial camel's back is when this large group was seated next to us and were immediately given wine glasses. Thirty minutes was enough for me to know we were not going to be waited upon. I cannot give a review of the wine because I was never offered any! I don't know what went wrong, but it was a terrible experience.
