Come for the Fresh Pasta, Stay for the Cultured Malört Butter and Playful Cocktails at Portland’s Adelleda | Eater Portland

"Shining on Grand and Couch, this newly opened spot from the team behind Vtopian and now-closed Unwind showcases Chef Riley Shepard’s symphonic ode to Portland’s seasons with delicate pastas, precise garnishes, and complex sauces — if it’s at the farmers market, you’ll find it on the menu. I consider the rotating gnocchi and bucatini a must: recently, Parisian gnocchi — airy pâte à choux dumplings — came coated in honeynut squash, brown butter, and sage, then topped with poached cranberries and hazelnuts, while toothsome bucatini was dressed in onion soubise with cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Don’t sleep on the salads; in late November, root vegetables reign (beets three ways, sunchokes, fingerlings), and Oregon-grown Italian bitter greens like puntarelle arrive dressed to highlight the vegetables at their peak. Be adventurous: Shepard blends Midwestern and Oregonian goodness with European sensibilities, exemplified by cultured Malört butter for bread and pickles and a giardiniera that brightens a rich risotto lobster mushroom etouffee. Despite the cavernous space — once a vacuum store — the room feels warm and inviting, combining the coziness of a ’70s home bar with the grandeur of a hotel lobby. For an insider move, order the martini, which comes with a full snack plate of seasonal pickles and olives stuffed with Vtopian’s cheeses — a must for martini and pickle lovers; the cave-aged Brie will turn non-vegan heads, especially with crisped baguette and seasonal mostarda." - Anastasia Sloan

Love the vibes, menu and service! 5 stars. Here’s my feedback. We were told they preferred if we order everything at once, which is a bit annoying to me. We ordered 4 dishes, and so it’s impossible to eat everything before it gets cold. I would have rather ordered small plates and then entrees. The brussel sprouts were very tasty but a bit too charred. The caprese was good but the persimmons were a bit too sweet for me. I prefer a savory caprese. The toasts that came with it were fantastic! The arancini were pretty dang good but needed a bit more seasoning or cheese or something. We got the world vegan month special (fusilli) and it was a bit underwhelming. Needed something. We got “martinis for two” and I had never seen this before with an accouterments ice bowl! That was awesome! Would def come back to try more things!

Wonderful dinner at Adelleda! It’s a beautiful place, great interior design, amazing service. While the space alone is worth a visit, food and drinks were extraordinarily good. We got cheese (Brie!) two Pasta dishes (gnocchi to die for), and creative veggie sides. Our N/A cocktails were delicious and not an afterthought at all! Don’t forget to get a dessert! Highly recommend ❤️

Incredible! Vegan meals with gluten-free pasta options. Pros: - Very inventive cocktails - Low proof + no proof drink options too - London/LA chic setting. Wonderful ambiance. (And a record player for music!) - Gorgeous plating. - Very cute bathroom too, the wallpaper is pasta! And… Must try the cardamom honeycomb dessert. Very moist. Lovely flavors. I want to go back just to have that again. Slow service, but no doubt that will improve with time

What an incredible experience. Adelleda brought something much needed in Portland (especially now): a high class evening for a far more affordable price. Adelleda gave us everything we were hoping for and so much more. Locally sourced, organic, and intentional, I'm looking forward to spending cocktail hour, dinner, or even just dessert (holy cardamom cake) at this fun modern retro spot. Thank you to the staff for being so welcoming and accommodating; we will be back for so much more.

I went to Adelleda for a friend’s birthday dinner and the entire experience was 10/10! Food was exceptional and full of flavor. Cocktail menu featured interesting and delicious seasonal cocktails, we tried a variety off the list and all were delicious! Our server, Quinn, was also fantastic!!! Timing was perfect, she came back to check on us frequently and even split our bill at the end! Will definitely be back for another evening to try the artisanal ice cream flavors!

Unwind is now Adelleda in a brick & mortar location with Vtopian,a match made in heaven! Chef Riley and team delivers on taste, presentation and retro comfy atmosphere! Amazingly cool and comfortable big space with lots of interesting and tasty food you can shop from and take home with you. The vtopian cheese counter is a delight to peruse and choose your favorite cheeses from. One of the best vegan restaurants in Portland with lots of great seating. Well be back soon and we're bring our friends!

Yelp
Cheeseshop by day, vibey upscale cocktail bar and European glam restaurant by night. Big open space with lots of seating including standard tables, booths, some bar seating, a little library area with sofas, and an open shop area also with sofas and low tables. Gets a little noisy when full but still able to hold a conversation. Came here for the food and was not disappointed. Olives were amazing a huge portion. Sunchoke small plate was tasty, though not as pasty as the fried Brussels with kohlrabi relish and sumac. Salty and umami and infinitely snackable. We sampled two pastas: agnolotti and fusilli. I'd never had agnalotti before (or even heard of it) and was blown away. Soft chewy pillows of pasta stuffed with cheese, a little like a ravioli but totally different shape and texture experience. Highly recommend. Wasn't planning on cocktails but after seeing the menu couldn't resists. The maize and cane was a show stopper. Coconut corn cream? Sounds weird, tastes amazing. Presentation was a little over the top . Looking forward to trying more of the menu!

Yelp
My partner and I stopped in last night. We never got to try the food cart and have loved their cheese for years and have bought frequently from their old cheese shop and farmers markets. We also love the refillery. The owners don't shy away from their stance on social and political injustices. So we love to support them as much as we can. All of that to say we had dinner last night and was a little disappointed. I want to start with the good things first. Last night we popped in and were warmly greeted. We were sat and everyone that came by our table was attentive, friendly, and helpful. Service was impeccable. The vibes are killer! It's moody and feels upscale without being stuffy. It felt very Intentional and as if a lot of thought was put into every detail. We ordered wine so I can't attest to the cocktails but we saw plenty go by and they looked delicious. Now the not so great things. We didn't love the food. We ordered: Honey nut squash fritters Arancini Rigatoni The fritters aren't a typical fritter I'd say. Shaped like a mozzarella stick it didn't have much flavor. The oil flavor was quite powerful. The aioli also had a strange flavor to us. The arancini was probably my favorite thing of our order. They sat in a bowl of red sauce and had shaved cheese over the top. I'm not sure if it was intentional but the sauce was cold which we found a little off putting with the warm ball. But that could just be a personal preference. The rigatoni was our biggest disappointment. It had a little bit of a soapy taste? It would come and go. The squash in that dish was so yummy though. I could have had a bowl of just that. Like I said I hate leaving a mid review but we just weren't a big fan of our food. I think it's especially disappointing when you've spent a decent amount and leave feeling let down. We were told upon sitting that it was the first day of their new menu so maybe this one was just wasn't for us. I would come back for a cocktail or a glass of wine because like I said the vibes were lovely and the staff are so kind. Maybe a small plate. But I'm not sure I would go for a full dining experience again. Also layer up in there so you can take layers off. It was so hot in there. I saw a couple people fanning themselves and we chatted with another couple about how hot it was. I was anxious to get out because i was so uncomfortable. The heat was cranked! Haha

Yelp
Stopped for a quick cocktail and stayed for more. Their modern take on a pisco sour with vegan foam that's not aqua fava! Foaming bitters! Sorcery! The service was beyond the PDX minimum of customer service and really in the hospitality side of things! Super refreshing! The decor, setting, even the glassware chosen for cocktails was all well thought out and top notch! The food was phenomenal and you could likely just not tell your non vegan friends it's vegan and they'd not notice.

Yelp
I feel so thankful to have been able to check out Adelleda on their opening night. Located inside the new Vtopian location, the ambiance is cozy and intimate. They have a beautiful little library to enjoy, along with a wide variety of vegan cheeses and treats. The staff here were all super friendly and attentive. My family and I tried various dishes. Each dish was unique and thoughtfully put together. Made with seasonal ingredients, each dish was fresh and tasty. One thing I was particularly disappointed with, however, was the lack of mushrooms they used. I found myself digging to see if they may have forgotten to add any only to find a few very small cut pieces. At a higher price point, I would have liked to have more vegetables in each dish too. Overall, my experience dining here was enjoyable and I would consider dining here again in the future.

Yelp
Upscale setting with attentive service. Every dish we had tasted amazing and there was such attention to detail. Definitely will be back. The melon ball fizz drink was delicious. You can also buy some cheese from the case to take home.

Yelp
So excited to them expand! Some of the best vegan food in Portland! With the king of vegan food chef ‍ Riley!

Yelp
Truly gourmet and vegan? Yes!! Upscale ambience and service, fabulous cocktails. Very fun. I'm not vegan but this cuisine rivals any fine Portland restaurant. Prices are reasonable. Perfect for a date night or any special night out. They also do lunch service. Try it!
