ADI Design Museum

Ma ma mia !! Excellent design museum displaying a huge range of items of vintage, retro and contemporary Italian design over the decades. Why do the Italians in general, and the Milanese especially, excel in design of anything and everything? They seem to have the midas touch - everything is enhanced visually and function-wise by their design input. Is there something in the water, or is it simply in their DNA? Everything viewed at ADI was superb and sleek and functional. Wanted to take everything home with me.....but......the logistics of getting back to New Zealand would be a step too far. And I'm guessing the museum management would not be to pleased. I could list the huge range of design products on display, but seriously, that would be a very long list so please go along to the ADI Design Museum and see for yourself. My particular interest is furniture and lighting design - everything I saw relating to this was fantastico. I spent 3 hours at the design museum with a break midway in the great onsite cafe. It was a place that Tomas Moreno, a millennial artisan furniture maker from Buenos Aries / Argentina also recently visited and was as equally impressed as me. It is also the place where the pending wedding reception of Tomas and his significantly older, elegant Milanese fiancée will be held. The ADI museum demonstrates the rich contribution of Italian designers to a plethora of products: Washing machine, cars, chairs, desks, dresses, carpet, bikes, mugs, typewriters, lamps and more.... no need to buy the entrance tickets. You can walk around the free areas and enjoy most of the museum

Fabulous museum - not enormous, with plenty to see and admire. Great lighting. Friendly staff. Cute (and popular) cafe inside with a good lunch menu.

If you love design, you should find the time to get there during your stay in Milan, evading from the luxury trip of the city centre and immersing yourself in the ideas which made great Made in Italy design.

Great place. As an industrial designer it felt like a small dream come true. Where there and was not disappointed at all. All the items were presented fantastically. I genuinely had a lot of fun going around through all these objects and reading about them. Even my girlfriend enjoyed and she usually cut very fast to the closest sitting area reading a book when she's bored. And it didn't happen she was moving around being all curious and adorable. Yes I was a bit industrial designer dushnila but I couldn't help it. I love it.

Lots to see going back to 1954 with exhibits arranged in chronological order (ish), if you have an interest in product design then this is for you. I'm told every item won an Italian design award.

A wonderful and informative museum demonstrating the history of design from the 1900's to the present day. Tons of impressive displays and informative signage. While outside of the city center, the museum is a must see to understand Italian design style and techniques. Every guest receives a complementary free design poster, a super nice touch!
