The 13 Best Ethiopian Restaurants In Seattle

"Lentils and lamb" is not an acoustic duo performing at an open mic night near you, nor a wedding photography collective that specializes in 35mm film. They're our two favorite things at Adulis, an Ethiopian restaurant in Greenwood. We're particular to the defin miser, a brown lentil stew that truly shines in a city full of red and yellow versions. Alongside these excellent legumes should be the lamb tibs, bright and warm from awaze and red pepper chutney. Plus, it never gets too crowded in the colorful, booth-filled space." - lidiya belete, aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

I love the food and service here so much! Whenever I go, I get the lamb tibs and the veggie combo. The food is absolutely delicious and I love all of the different flavors. It's a great communal dining experience and excellent food for sharing. The restaurant is comfortable and fun to look around in and the staff is responsive and kind. Adulis is in my restaurant rotation and it should be in yours, too!

NOT CLEAN: menus wet & greasy, no napkins, other tables left dirty, bathroom dirty . Made me wonder what the kitchen was like and if my food was safe to eat. If I was alone I would have walked right out but I was meeting someone there for dinner so I felt obligated to stay. Bad customer service: No greeting, I had to waive the waitress down and later she completely disappeared. She also had a vape in her hand while working. The other staff acted like we didn't exist. Atmosphere: No windows or daylight, dark like a lounge. We were the only customers the entire time we were there. Food: Tasted okay I guess. Was not worth $20 . Mayyyybe $10? My stomach doesn't feel good. I would not return and definitely won't recommend. I don't see how this place will stay open much longer.

We loved our lunch at this restaurant. The vibe was great, our server friendly and the food was extremely tasty and unpretentious! Very few Ethiopian places offer fish goulash and I highly recommend the dish here. Even the dishes in the veggie combo had a few extra elements like okra curry and a beetroot potato thingy. We had a perfect end to our meal with traditionally brewed Ethiopian coffee.

Google
I had their meat combo—it was absolutely amazing! It’s been a while since I’ve had authentic African food, and it definitely hit the spot. The flavors were rich, the portions generous. The service was just as impressive as the food. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, frequently checking in to ensure everything was perfect. If you’re looking for delicious Ethiopian food and exceptional service, I highly recommend this place. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
They need to replace their open sign with an out of business sign. Worst food in Seattle. We ordered the Derek beef tibs. They were over seasoned and cooked to a crisp and tasted like old dry goat. The tomato fitfit isn't worthy of a spit spit. On a good note there beer was cold. Avoid this place!!

Google
The food was absolutely killer, and service was fantastic. I can’t believe I’ve lived so close to here and never been before, absolutely recommend and will be coming back. The pricing is great too, so nice to see somewhere not price gouging finally.

Google
Lunch here today was really delicious, clearly made with care and the service was wonderful. Walking in, we discovered a cheerful, bright (strands of colored lights cross-crossing the ceiling), family-run spot. Within a minute we were seated, given bottles of water and had help to choose what to order. We ended up with the meat & veggie combination platters. It was a huge amount of food and we loved the combination of differently spiced and textured things to scoop bites from. The platters also came with an extra basket of injera. When we were finished, the server told us that if there is part of one of the combination plates that we don’t care for, the kitchen will happily replace it when we order next time. There’s a small parking lot along the side of the building. Highly recommend!

Google
The food and customer service were AMAZING!!!!!! Every bite of food was flavorful, and I can tell it was made with love. I’ve eaten at many places, and I can say honestly that I have not tasted better food 100%. Some food may be as good, but none better. *Chef’s kiss*

Yelp
Location is a bit divey, not my favorite. We wanted to try because it had such good reviews, but the cuisine just isn't for me. I had a really tough time with the Injera, which I know is a staple in Ethiopia and Eritrea, but again, just not my cup of tea. I didn't want to give a lower score in case I'm the problem, but I can't go higher than three stars.

Yelp
It took me a while, but I started loving Ethiopian food a lot more and started appreciating the cuisine the more I had it. It's hard for me to compare Ethiopian restaurants here just yet since the cuisine isn't something I have to often still, but it's definitely been quite good the time I've had it. This is no exception either. The platter was quite large and I enjoyed almost every thing on it. I don't know the names of everything still, so sorry for my ignorance, but both the meat and veggie items on the platter were very good. There's nothing special about the egg, but for some reason, it hits different with that sauce here. So freaking good! Service was friendly, but the place was pretty dark and dreary. Definitely has more of a night scene vibe or just a dive bar kinda vibe. There is a bar attached in another room close to the back. So maybe it use to be a bar and the design of the place just hasn't changed. The restaurant did feel very wide and spacious. Possibly for a dance floor or something. Anyways I had a good time and food was delicious.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the service is great! They also have drinks and really good coffee! I go here all the time !

Yelp
We decided to try this place out when we visited Seattle as we were craving Ethiopian. The ambience was not great, the lights were full and not crowded for a Saturday. Veggie combo (4 stars): There were at least six delicious sides to the injera. The lentils were fresh and delicious. Loved the authentic food. I wish they let us replace a few veggie options with meat options.

Yelp
How I heard of this place: One of our favorite neighborhood restaurants pre-pandemic (Geo's) closed. In it's place came Adulis. We were eager to get in and see if it would become a new neighborhood favorite. Type of cuisine: "Adulis Restaurant is one of the best Ethiopian & Eritrean restaurants located in Seattle Washington, offering a fun-filled, casual dining experience! Adulis Restaurant strives always serving you fresh and affordable Ethiopian cuisine with a desire of quality ingredients." "We serve fresh and delicate Ethio-Eritrean food menus. Come and visit our restaurant." Ambiance: Dark and small from the outside, yet colorful and boasting exuberance inside. The booth seating from Geo's remains, but the detail further in, of Ethiopian and Eritrean living room setting is a lovely addition. What I ordered: For the three of us dining here on this day, we selected a Vegetarian Platter. Atop the injera was piled Miser Wot (red lentils), Kik Wot (yellow lentils), Gomen (Collard Greens), Shiro (Split Peas), Defin Miser (Brown Lentils), Atakilt Wot (Cabbage), and a fresh salad of lettuce, tomato and cucumber. What I loved: Each dish was so flavorful and filling, perfectly seasoned and with at least one spicy option for those of us who were keen. The injera was perfectly fermented and added great depth of flavor to the selection in front of us. Why I loved it: Gentle, friendly service, a quiet setting and wonderful food! Cost: Average

Yelp
This decor in this place is a mish mash of different styles thrown together. There's plenty of seating, which is nice, and we took one of the raised booths. When you're seated, the waiter brings over two bottled waters and places them on the table. I thanked him, but then read a review that they charge you for the bottled water, which is really sneaky because most people will think that this is just how they serve you water. Such a silly way to destroy a customer's trust, and over what? To make $5 more? They should rethink this tactic. When he came back to the table to take our order, I told him we didn't want the bottled waters and just wanted tap water. We got the key wot beef, beef tibs, and collard greens. The only thing I liked was the key wot beef. It had good flavor, and was a little spicy. I would eat this again. The beef tibs were way over cooked and borderline burned. It was also a little weird how they were served, because the woman came out with beef tibs on a sizzling plate and then dumped them on the injera where the rest of the food was. Maybe that's how tibs are traditionally served? ‍ The collard greens were disappointing as well. They were like a bad version of saag paneer but with less flavor, and I barely even like saag paneer. They brought out a little container of dry spice, which was lovely. It's quite spicy and sour, so if you don't do spice then steer clear. Service was decent for our food. Food took longer than expected to get to our table even though we were the first customers in so it's not like they were backed up with customers. One of the servers sat down at a table close by and lit a try of incense halfway through our meal, which we really didn't like. The scent was too strong since she was so close, and it interfered with the taste of our food. Lastly, we wanted our check but had to wait forever to get it even after we requested it. The owners or servers seemed like lovely people, like the kind of folks who aren't just business owners but could also be your friends. I just don't know that we would come back here since it's a 25 minute drive for us.

Yelp
Okay, so I'm no expert in this type of food, but when the place is filled with folks that appear to be of the region this food originates from, then maybe this might be a winner. In my book, it's a tasty place, that fills your tummy. Look, I have no idea what to have ordered... we managed to see fellow Yelpers got the Vegetable Combo, so we got that. We also got a Beef dish. Word for the wise, ask for napkins and a fork (or two) so you can dig in, a little cleaner. You may consider washing your hands just before the food comes, or a little hand sanitizer. The flavours were good, we'll balanced, and not overly spicy (for the spicy parts). The Injera bread was tasty, and was perfect for finger fooding. Overall, a great experience. They were super busy when we were there, so the server was a tad overwhelmed, and took a little longer to get us our napkins and such, but would I come here again, yup. A nice welcome addition to North Greenwood/Broadview.

Yelp
The food was so yummy, and cute vibrant interior. I broke my foot a few weeks ago and am on crutches - the owner carried the takeout all the way to my car. Service was heartfelt, genuine, kind.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious, but the service was a little slow but very friendly. There was almost no one else there on a Friday night, which is a shame because we enjoyed the dinner.
google avatar

Karl H.

Yelp
The absolute definition of a shit hole. Filthy beyond belief. Horrible food. Rats would be embarrassed to eat here. The bathroom was disgusting.

Franny P.

Yelp
I didn't try this place for so long because I didn't realize that they had a veggie combo. Enjoyed it and would go back! The interior of the restaurant is a bit divey which made me not give it 5 stars.
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
We shared a veggie combo and a lamb stew. When asked if we wanted mild, medium, or hot, we requested medium (having had extremely hot Ethiopian food in the past). All the food was mild and bland. If this was medium, I can't imagine what mild tasted like. Additionally, when we arrived, the waitress put a plastic bottle of water in front of each of us and asked if there was anything else we wanted to drink. We both said water was fine. Then, we were charged $2.50 for each water on the bill. We had assumed this was how they served table water. Never imagined we'd be charged. We sat in a booth, and my bench seat had things sticking up in it, very uncomfortable to sit on. The display of food was good looking, too bad it didn't taste better.

Yelp
I was so happy to find an Ethiopian joint that served alcohol. The African beer was tasty and it was a treat eating Ethiopian with an adult beverage. The food here is good, plenty of spice and plenty spicy. The injera was good as well. We're vegan and this spot had the usual veggie fare for vegans and vegetarians. It was easy to order vegan and the menu was clearly laid out. Of all the Ethiopian spots I've eaten at, even in Seattle, this place is perfectly acceptable. It's not great and it doesn't stand out amongst other Ethiopian joints, except for the beer option-- which I really enjoyed. I'm not going to rush back but if I'm close, hungry, and in a hurry I'd eat here again without a second thought.

Quinn C.

Yelp
I love Adulis. It is such a hidden gem of Seattle. Such delicious food consistently; the Asa Gulash is unmatched in my book. The service is more laid back and thus can be slightly slow in my experience, but everyone I've met has been so friendly and helpful. If you haven't come yet, do it! And get the Asa Gulash!
google avatar

Skye P.

Yelp
Not pictured here are their veggie rolls. I've never had anything like them and they're so delicious and easy to eat! Their 1 large vegetarian option was amazing. Note: if sharing with friends who eat meat, it will likely come on one platter. We don't mind it, but some people do, so just FYI!!
google avatar

Ethan M.

Yelp
If you like Ethiopian food this a great place. The vegetarian platter had a nice variety with a couple of things you don't normally get. Price was great. As with every Ethiopian place I've ever been, to the decor and atmosphere was a little funky. Service was warm but very relaxed.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
The good: prompt service, flavorful veggie roll and beef / vegetable sambosas, considerate of turning off flickering lights per my request; warm server who took pride in describing how the injera is made. The bad: They don't tell you the bottled water, which they bring out by default without asking if you want tap, will be a charge; possible overcharging on the bill without presenting you a preliminary itemized ticket; $3 for crappy Lipton teabag. The lesson: Good experience but watch your six. Make sure they bring out what you ordered and you are charged for what you actually order. I won't dispute the charge with my bank because I should have been sharper. Good way to reinforce the lesson.

Jayden B.

Yelp
Was absolutely amazing. The service was great, the food was delicious! We also got the sambusas and they were by far the best I've ever had!

Sahil P.

Yelp
Great food and great service! Nice place for sumptous dinner! We ordered veggie combo, which very tasty. Each entree was delicious! We also ordered collard greens with chicken. The chicken was tender and greens flavorful. The ambiance was great! Recommend this place for Ethiopian and Eritrean food :)

Yelp
So thrilled to have an Ethiopian restaurant in the neighborhood and this one didn't dissapoint. You might miss this place altogether if you didn't know what you were looking for. Thankfully, thanks to a neighbor's recommendation, I did know what I was looking for. Once you walk through the doors you're greeted by a warm, cozy, delicious smelling dining room and friendly service. The injera here is soft and sour. The vege combo has a wonderful assortment of lentil and vege stews. You will leave warm and full and happy. For the uninitiated: order a vege combo + a meat dish if you like. Come to dine here with people you don't mind scooping bites of food from the same platter with bits of torn flat bread with. Yes, it's a little messy. They would probably bring you forks and separate dishes if you ask, but I say live a little & experience something a little different than the norm.

Yelp
Tucked away at the greenwood ave and 105th street intersection, use google maps to point you to the right spot. Plenty of parking on the side. Large space with pretty interiors, lounge bar and restaurant . Clean and spacious restrooms. You are hit with the lovely fragrance of frankincense when you enter, and extremely friendly service by the ladies there. This place just opened up in the summer of '22, so everything is brand new. We got the doro wat with injera and veggie combo. The veggies combo was huge with 5-7 items, unlimited injera if you need more . Prices were on par with other Ethiopian restaurants and taste was on point. Both dishes were excellent and we will definitely be back. Great to have an ethiopian place in greenwood/ closer to the west side versus going to lake city way or central district. We also had the ethiopian tea at the end- infused with cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and your choice of wither green or black teabag. The ladies check on you often to make sure you are enjoying your meal. We did see quite a few ethiopian/ eritrean folks eating there which is also a good sign. Recommend going to check it out - they are open late which is another plus!

Yelp
Apparently, Adulis just opened 3 months ago and is already crushing it. I reckon this place is one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in Seattle, and I've tried my fair share. The injera is made of 100% teff which is great. My favorite dish here was the asa gulash.

velma v.

Yelp
Not as flavorful as we are used to when we drive to Columbia City for Ethiopian. The injera was fresh. Fast food coming out . Our server was watching a movie on her phone when we wanted to order, needed more injera, wanted our check. This is a no for us. 5 out of 10

John P.

Yelp
Positive--Server was pleasant. Ambience was ok. Negative--we were served bottles of water first thing without being asked. I thought-nice hospitality. I got billed $10.00. Not honest considering it wasn't stated it was at a charge. I wasn't given an itemized receipt until after I was asked to pay. Knew something was wrong. I should have asked for the bill. My 2nd mistake. 1st mistake was not to read reviews. Overcharged in general for all the food. $24.00 for 1.5 cups of fish cubes.
google avatar

Kumaran S.

Yelp
Great food. The veggie combo is a must try. Their lamb tibs was also very good. Very friendly nice people too. Will return.

Yelp
Please stop supporting this restaurant until it respects its neighbors. They host after hour parties that attract guns, garbage and booming music. They have been politely approached by neighbors to keep their after hours inside and quiet. They have been asked to ban patrons who cause problems outside the restaurant. They refuse to and have been rude to all who have asked them to follow noise and nuisance ordinance laws. Police have also been involved. They are impacting neighboring restaurants and pubs because of the problems they are causing. Boycott this place!!
google avatar

Yelp
First and most importantly, the food is delicious! We got the family platter and my husband and I devoured it while our toddler who wasn't that hungry even joined in near the end. The family platter is about 50/50 meat dishes and vegan dishes. So much flavor and spice and variety. Yum. I wish I'd remembered to take a picture but other people have posted pics. The injera is sour and perfect. The ambiance is nice but could be more romantic with less bright light on our booth. The fun colorful lights added a special touch. Some more music could add to the vibes but the art was fun and eclectic. Service was okay. Not good or bad. Very friendly but when we walked in nobody was around and we weren't sure if we should wait or seat ourselves and we had a baby and 2 year old in tow. Toddler of course is potty training and no changing table so just FYI for parents of young kids. We made it work. Overall a great experience and we'll definitely be back!

Yelp
The service is always warm and friendly! Cute interior and amazing food. Love this place!

Yelp
Another tasty Ethiopian veggie platter in a city jammed with Ethiopian restaurants. I got their veggie combo ($21 plus tax), which comes with 6 different dishes plus salad and plenty of injera for scooping. Each dish was solid, though perhaps on the blander side. Extremely kind and attentive service. The price was rather high though, eclipsing the price of every veggie combo I've had elsewhere in Seattle, so perhaps not the best value for money. All in all, another solid Ethiopian spot.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try out Adulis since they opened and finally had my opportunity recently for a friend's birthday. What a delight! The space is cute. Our group was seated back by the bar, which my friends who frequent Adulis report never having seen open. Service was friendly and prompt. Food was delicious. My partner and I had the veggie combo ($21.99) which has a lovely assortment, all flavorful. Paying at the counter after we'd enjoyed our meals, our host informed us that they have a hookah lounge downstairs and that they have live music a few nights a week (I think Thurs-Sat and maybe also Sun?). Unsure if she meant in the lounge or restaurant, but I'll definitely come back to check it out. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the water situation. There were plastic water bottles waiting for us at our table when we arrived. I noticed that they were automatically added to our bill at $1.00 each. I pointed out that we only consumed one of them and so she removed one from our bill. I'd prefer not getting charged for water, but at the very least I want to be given the option to order one if I want it and not end up paying for something I didn't even order.

Yelp
The employees are lovely, wonderful people, but my God are they slow and is the food HORRIFIC. The tibs had NO seasoning at all. Not a single lick of berbere was present. Not even the salad had berbere on it. What kind of Ethi food is that?? The injera was light in color, and not all that fluffy. I think they didn't let it ferment overnight long enough. My fiance had the bubble guts after eating her food and I couldn't even eat mine. The derek tibs tasted SO gamey. I took one bite and knew I had just wasted $68 dollars, tip included (I TIPPPED for this mess!!) This is some of the worst Ethiopian food I have ever had, and I've eaten all over the country. Please add more berbere. Like, a lot of it. Tons of it. And marinate the meat. And they forgot my dang ayeb! I live 25 miles away and this was a disappointment that ruined my dinner, my day, and my week. I paid for a nice smile and rancid slop that I could not eat. This place has been open for a less than a year, and this ain't it. Never again, I'm sorry, sad, and upset to say. Ugh!!!

Jie L.

Yelp
The most flavorless Ethiopian food I've ever had--which is strange because they tend to be very well seasoned and flavorful. We also ordered lentils for my children. It was undercooked and completely flavorless. The meat was very chewy and had a gamey flavor. I'm genuinely puzzled by the lack of flavor in the food. Not a single dish was good. How did this restaurant have such high reviews? This place was not cheap and we ended up spending well over $100 on food that I couldn't even choke down and we grabbed some pizza on the way home. Not to mention, the service was incredibly slow even though it wasn't super busy. We waited for about 35 mins to get served and had to ask repeatedly for water. It was a disappointing experience all around.
google avatar

Hansi D.

Yelp
Had a really wonderful meal at Adulis! We asked about getting both vege and meat in a combo meal and were told we can order a "family combo", which comes with about 4 meat dishes (beef and mutton) and many vege dishes, including few variations of lentils, stewed greens, beets, cabbage, and okra. The injera was soft, fluffy, and subtly sour. This platter was plenty for two people and we had leftovers to take home. I'm glad I came across this place and will be coming back.
google avatar

Jen N.

Yelp
Great new Ethiopian place that just recently opened up. I was told the hours are from 11:00 am to 9:30 pm, this was for a Monday, not sure about weekends. The service is super friendly, all welcoming and kind. The food took a little over 30 mins to get to my table but the wait was worth it. I ordered the veggie combo for $21.95 and It did not disappoint. The flavors are wonderful, plenty of injera and very satisfying. While the food was a little slow to get to the table I will definitely be returning.
google avatar

Lien D.

Yelp
I noticed there was a new Ethiopian restaurant that replaced Geo's Cuban's old location so my husband and I decided to try it out. We ordered the spicy lamb tibs and veggie combo to go. It was around a thirty minute wait to get our food. In terms of injera, they give you as much as Ahadu and Jebena and way less than Enat. It is probably the most sour injera which I like. For the amount of food, it is enough for the meal. In terms of amount of food, less than Adahu. We usually have left overs for all the other three restaurants in North Seattle but we didnt have any here. The spicy lamb tibs was delicious. I highly recommend. The meat was perfectly cooked. The veggies combo was good. I liked the beets. I hope they make a meat combo plate in the future as it would give me an opportunity to try more meat dishes all at once. The interior is pretty nice and can accommodate a decent amount of people. It is probably one of the better looking Ethiopian restaurant in North Seattle. The staff were very nice and chill. I would say it is slightly more expensive than Adahu in terms of pricing. I am excited to see if the food gets better (or worse) as people become more aware of the restaurant.
google avatar

Bruce G.

Yelp
Great decor AND food AND music in this cozy spot that needs more support/customers! Veggie combo is delicious and the injera is gluten free even! Ample portions of delicious ethiopian wine to boot

Yelp
My first interaction with adulis got off on the wrong foot. My friends and I wanted something different to split for take out and since I'd never had Ethiopian we went with this. I called the order, which was difficult due to some language misses we both made, and then went to pick it up after an hour. Adulis is definitely a local place owned by local people making native cuisine. My wife commented it reminded her of a place in DC she loved as a kid. When talking with the hostess my guess is that their shock was that our 9 piece order was real and here we were. After a flurry of activity and corrections along with friendly banter with the owner, who wanted to give us a little extra on top of wanting to give us drinks, we took it back and feasted. Absolutely worth the wait. Having been in the restaurant industry I know that these mistakes can occur and what it's like to be on the margins but if you can have some patience you will savor delightful foods. Everyone said it was spiced well with enough flair not to overwhelm. The injera was perfect with everything we put on it. The people were polite and kind during a busy time dealing with an unexpected situation and that's always a sign of a good place. We will be going back. 100%

Yelp
The good here was wonderful! The interior is comfortable and the service warm Get over there and try out this new spot in Greenwood!

Yelp
The service was excellent, and the food good. There was a guy playing guitar near the stage. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Yelp
We're two for two at Adulis! Their spicy Berber sauce is just right and the chicken wot was fantastic. We're a huge fan of the veggie combo, in particular the cabbage, greens, and the red lentils. Delicious! We will be back.

Paula L.

Yelp
What a great little place! Went there for a mother/son date last week. Great ambience and the service was impeccable. Sambusas we're delightful, but I'm a big fan of dipping sauce and it would have made them even better. The kategna was delicious. We got the family plate (not on the menu) with meats and veggies. Liked pretty much everything

Yelp
Great food and decor. I highly recommend the meat combo as it was very delicious. If you don't know what to order, the waiter does a good job figuring out what you may like. Don't forget to order espresso, very good coffee you have to try.

Yelp
So happy to have found a new Ethiopian spot near where I live - Ethiopian is my favorite. This spot did not disappoint! The service is delightful the food delicious! They asked me what my favorite was and then brought me a lil more - which was so sweet! Can't wait to go again!

Yelp
Veggie platter was excellent. One of the best Kitfos we've had. The atmosphere was warm and family friendly. We ate everything so quickly I couldn't capture a photo of our beautiful dishes! We'll definitely be back.
