Chicago’s Restaurant Community Rallies to Help Selfless Pitmaster in Hospital | Eater Chicago

"I report that Sanchez was admitted to Illinois Masonic Hospital after weeks of coughing and fatigue; doctors performed two open-heart surgeries to replace two valves, his condition stabilized with hopes of leaving the ICU, and friends and family brought food to thank the hospital staff who cared for him." - Ashok Selvam

I had to take my girlfriend to the emergency room here after she had surgery at the same hospital for what looked to be a serious infection. The nurses, doctors and staff were profesional and exhibited the appropriate balance of science and compassion. The experience at Illinois Masonic was great. She was well cared for by caring professionals.

Very mixed experiences here... We had a horrible experience in the ER with my mom a few months ago, to the point we ended up just walking out. Then, more recently, my dad needed care, and we were dreading coming here, but this is what was recommended. The ER experience was much better. He was admitted, and the staff in Tower 7 by the west end were wonderful. He had surgery, and the surgical team was great, as well. The ICU team was amazing, but when he was stepped down to the east end of tower 7, the service quality dropped noticeably. Very long waits waiting for the nurse were the main thing, and only 1 or 2 nurses were polite and friendly. The others were always rushing and/or dismissive. They would leave the alarms ringing for long periods of time. Also, the water in that section had a weird taste that wasn't present in the other areas. My dad did not like it, and I tried it and got a sore throat a short time later.

Google
This was the worst hospital experience I've ever had. I was dismissed, invalidated and made to feel that my pain was my fault. I was treated by the WORST health-care provider I've ever had. She was combative and treated me like a suspect and not a patient in pain. Her name was Maria C. After her ignorant diagnosis of my pain (I had stabbing upper left back pain) I asked to talk to a doctor. She informed me that the best I could do in the ER was a NP and diagnosed me with a bladder infection. I'm pretty suret those don't cause sharp chest pain. . I was discharged with the same incredible pain in which I arrived. Her decisions about my medication were ignorant at best but negligent and dangerous. I will be filing a formal complaint about this CNP and will insist she be held accountable for what can only described as poor care and negligence. GO TO SWEDISH HOSPITAL. IL Masonic is a bad choice.

My daughter had ankle surgery on Tuesday. While the day was longer than expected every single person that interacted with us was amazing. Each one was so kind and helpful. The crew in the last recovery room area(where I was able to be with her again) were the absolute best! Each one spent so much time with her and were so amazing with her while she was trying to wake up and get ready to go home.

Google
I had to have a minior surgery and I had a pretty good experience. I usually try to stay at Northwestern, but I think I found me another good hospital. Thr doctors truly explain and makes you understand what's going on with your situation. The nurses are also very attentive and warm. Nurse Diana and nursing tech Quinn truly won me over and made my stay very comfortable. They should definitely win employees of the month. My room was also very clean and they stock extra pillows in the cabinets to make sure you sleep well. I'd like to thank everyone at Illinois Masonic for their amazing care

Tonya R.

Google
Amazing compassion from the staff and surgical team. Raf my nurse was outstanding and totally helped the healing process. From check in to check out this hospital is top notch! Thank you all so very much!!

Jeff H.

Google
I love love love love this hospital and all the staff who works there. I started using this as my hospital because it's so close to my home, but even if I ever move away from this neighborhood, it'll still be my hospital because I have never had a poor experience there. In fact, it has always been extremely pleasant every time I have needed to go, including ER, urgent care, surgery, etc.

Google
If I could give 0 stars this place would be at absolutely 0. THEY TOOK MY MEDICATION FROM ME AND THEN LOST IT!!! They say they have no idea where my medication is and that they don’t know when or if I’ll be able to get it back. Ok top of this Mark from public service proceeds to argue and raise his voice at us because HE lost the medication I absolutely need to take daily. Nurses at this hospital are inattentive, and inconsiderate. Doctors are very quick and seem to not communicate very much with nurses about patient conditions. On top of this a doctor came to see me and when speaking to nurses the nurses had absolutely no idea who that doctor was. I do not recommend going to his hospital even if you are dying

Dana C.

Yelp
You gotta love this hospital, the doctors, nurses, and staff members have the best bedside manners, and treat their patients like family!

Yelp
Advocate: You're Mine I would like to think for a moment about this brief respite from life called a hospital stay at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Since I was seized between June 27 and July 10, 2025, because the affair seemed more like an incarceration. Due to pain, nausea and vomiting, I was asked by my gastroenterologist to come to the emergency department quickly to urgently address the symptoms. And so I did arrive quickly and urgently. Chaos and mayhem ensued as a misunderstanding occurred with my car and security services, and I ended up getting an injection in the arm that knocked me out on the floor after a wrestling match. If this seems familiar to you as a patient, you are not alone. Welcome to the mental ward and the mental world of healthcare. This is how most people get access to sleeping medication and narcotics and little blue pills and teal pills and little white ones for the first time in their lives. The problem is that once a mental patient, always a mental patient. That is called a stigma, You will find that it is hard to shake loose that stigma... and you will definitely want to shake it loose eventually. But I digress. I was able to partly shake loose stigma of my hospital stay that time in June/July. Before I left, I told my providers that I would take a certain route home and that I dreamed of it every day. They are probably aware that I was unable to take that route because I needed to visit the dentist first; please note that was also unsuccessful, but the saga also continues. In the meantime, I have a picture, no, several which prove that I found my way home And it was everything I ever dreamed it would be and then some. The kind nurses and security offices and officers were only the beginning of those who helped. We all advocated for ourselves, didn't we? Including the patients, let's name them all: * MD * DO * GASTROENTEROLOGIST * PODIATRIST * DENTIST * OPHTHALMOLOGIST * PHLEBOTOMIST * Medical assistant * Dental assistant * Nursing assistant * Rita Bellouze * OTHER SPECIALISTS * PA-C * HOSPITALISTS * RN NURSES * PSYCHIATRIST * SOCIAL WORKERS * NURSING CARE TECHNICIANS * MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR * PEERS * MEDICAL STUDENTS * PUBLIC SAFETY * DIETARY CONSULTANTS * OPERATORS * EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT * PATIENT ACCESS & CARE TEAM REPS * VALET * FRONT DESK * Patient relations * IMAGING * PHARMACY TECHNICIANS * Cable television, ComEd, hardwood floors, modern and charming amenities, clothing, paper, pencils, promises, and hope * PA system * Financial services * Doors * Medicine * Privacy * Leadership * Windows * Windows :-) * Showers * Housekeeping * Vaccines * Religious freedom * Computer access and music * Beauty treatments * Pfun Advocate, in case of emergency I know where to find you: 836 West Wellington St., Chicago, IL 60657. (773) 975-1600. Lots of parking, valet is available in the emergency department and the professional building which is located around the corner at 3000 N. Halsted Street Chicago, IL 60657

Yelp
If you are experiencing pain don't go here especially in July with new residents that don't know what they are doing, or how to manage pain. I' waited over 24h for an Advil. The resident didn't return the call to my nurse because she told me she was too busy. Today, in excruciating pain I waited over an hour. Because I was waiting so long, I took the medicine in my pill box that was in my purse. Security shows up at my door to confiscate the meds, my person belongs. I'm a 65 year old adult who happens to be a retired nurse. I have an infection in my spine that causes excruciating pain. I'm actually here for pain control and antibiotics. Pain control in the hospital is pretty basic care. If the resident was doing her job, and returned the message to my nurse, I would not have any issue with my pain, or needed to take from my purse. TRY NOT TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL IN JULY. ESPECIALLY ILLINOIS MASONIC I have never experienced anything like this.

Yelp
This place is awful! I had an appointment here at Illinois Masonic a few months ago. I've been coming here for the past seven years until they crossed the line with me. This place didn't communicate properly with me regarding my orders for 2 of my screenings that I needed every year. I called before my appointment to be sure that I had my scheduled screenings for my yearly exam. The nurse confirmed that they have everything ready for me. I arrive early finally , also scheduled the day off for my appointment. Guess what?! They didn't have my second order on file. This place ruined my day and not one nurse cared. I explained that I called and she said something about the receptionists don't know sometimes. What??!! Who's supposed to know then?? Doesn't make sense . The whole team of nurses were rude , unsympathetic, and unprofessional. I wasted my day off for nothing. I transferred to Northwestern immediately after the Illinois Masonic experience and Let me tell you something.. You're treated like a queen here! What a difference a hospital makes. So upset I wasted my time at Illinois Masonic for 7 years. I'm just happy to be with the Northwestern team

Yelp
Came with a family member for their scheduled surgery. The registration area in the lobby took a long time. The staff were calling in patients who checked in after us. There is a large cafeteria downstairs with very reasonable food prices. The drinks are very costly, though. The dining area needed to be cleaned. The seats and tables were dirty and the carpet was stained. There is also a cafe on the main level that sells Starbucks drinks and pastries. If you're staying awhile, it might be better to use the valet parking. It's very convenient and all done through your own phone.

Yelp
I have four herniated disc and it is extremely painful for me to stand, instead of being able to go directly to my appointment and wait as I do at Northwest University Hospital, I have to wait in line for over 20 minutes, which is an eternity for me in my current state. there was a backlog of people waiting to get passes, at the same time front desk staff were chitchatting with each other, as if there wasn't this big group of people waiting to be served. Then when I went to the elevator, no signage in the elevator to say on what floor is what service, get to my appointment and the changing room was horrendous, I took video their hair balls in the corner, garbage can filled to the top, dirt and smudged walls, and the locker was filthy with old visitor stickers, and obviously no consideration for cleanliness whatsoever. Then when I went to the MRI, I was told that I would squeeze this ball connected to a cord and it would alert them if I needed anything, the MRI seem to be getting kind of hot. I was concerned. I just wanted to ask if it was normal or not. I pushed the bulb probably 300 times, wiggled my legs up and down aggressively, it took me screaming in between the MRIs for them to actually notice that I needed something. Absolutely unprofessional and disgusting.

Yelp
Took my son to the ER is April. They sent us 1 bill in the mail and then in Sept sent us to collections for an outstanding $150 bill. Really, Advocate? 5 months after DOS you send us to collections? Will certainly not be visiting your ER ever again. Ridiculous.

Margaret A.

Yelp
I went there for pain in my side and I was treated right away in the ER. Everyone was very professional. I proceeded to be tested and ended up in the OR. The Surgeon was terrific and saved me from the pain I had been suffering from. I stayed overnight and was given excellent service. I can definitely not complain.

Yelp
do not recommend - nurses pricked me over 5x to get a needle catheter in - every person that saw me ended up needing to bring their supervisor in to confirm or re-do things - CT scan dye was VERY painful and I was dismissed and talked down to by the CT scan person; I later read this was likely due to the dye leaking into my hand. so I just grin and bared it for 10 minutes and it hurt a lot. - the triage rooms are atrocious, cold, feel like prison

Yelp
These wonderful doctors and nurses saved my life in emergency dept I had blood clots in arms legs and my heart and chest through catherization in the neck I wasn't even sleep they went through my neck the cardiologist was flew in from another place he specializes in that they blasted out my clots within a 24 hour period love these doctors I am slice at 65 to say still thanks to the care I received I came in emergency they made me priority because I thought I was having a heart attack but the clots would have caused a stroke I was immediately sent to surgery again it was a 30 minute wait but my patience paid off

Yelp
Would rate this hospital lower if possible. Once being moved to 'Mother and Baby' after delivery, our room had broken AC. My newborn and wife were very hot for two and a half days. Nurses claimed for multiple days they were 'calling engineering' or 'getting us fans,' neither of which happened. Furthermore, after discharge I asked for my parking to be validated- which the nurses explained it would. Merlin "like the magician"at the front desk of the main entrance claimed we would only get a reduced cost. This is not hospital policy. After getting the car and paying to receive my wife and newborn I asked the nurse to come to the front desk with me to ask why I didn't get full validation, and if I could get a refund. Merlin refused- claiming I wasn't clear even though I used the words 'pregnancy, delivery, and discharge.' Refused to refund and was very rude. (Charging back through bank) Point is- deliver elsewhere for a smoother experience and nicer employees. Like myself, this is one of the most important moments of your life, and you don't want it tainted by the lack of professionalism, ineptitude and just blatant disrespect of some of the non-medical and medical staff there. ** reached out to consumer report. No response or resolution yet.

Yelp
I went with my husband Saturday in the middle of the night, for excruciating pain in his knee. He was given pain prescription and an x ray. I asked for an orthopaedic doctor and was told we don't do that. His pain is WORSE but I won't bring him back. The wait time wasn't too bad and the staff seemed pretty helpful but the issue still is not resolved

Yelp
Called this place after being referred to by my provider. Called their +1 (773) 296-3272 at 12pm on 5/19/2025 their receptionist, stated to me "what's an colonoscopy?" Then she laughed at me not knowing my health status at all. I felt dismissed undervalued, not human & on a level been made to feel that my health was her last concern. So, I'd filed a complaint at the corporate number as well. Spoke with the office manager, Cora on 5/20/2025 at 2:30pm whom did NOT seem empathetic at all. If my life depended on it, I would NEVER return here & would advise all to do the same especially if they have cancer!

Yelp
Became patient of advocate healthcare and was patient with Oak Street health. Advocate so far has exceeded any expectations and nurses , doctor & associates sure follow up on patients progress. Highly recommend them. Thank You all for your support Barry Orenstein

Yelp
Women be advised, per Advocate billing, it's "standard practice" to overcharge women for unneeded tests. I went to the ER on June 11th for lower right abdominal pain. I told several nurses and doctors that I had not been "active" for over a year and there was zero chance of pregnancy. They ran a $125 test anyway. I've contacted billing several times they said it's standard practice to give every woman of reproductive years a pregnancy test. On another note, $125 for a pregnancy test and $15 for 1 norco is absolutely insane. Avoid this hospital if you can.

Yelp
My review is for Dr. Reis & the wonderful Obstetrics team. I've had nothing but great experiences here and would recommend Dr. Reis to anyone (and already have to so many!). Her kindness and bedside manner means so much. She really has a way of making you feel so comfortable with her! I love how she presents information in a digestible way. Along with Dr. Reis, all the nurses and techs in the office are extremely approachable and sweet. The building is nice and well kept. There is a parking garage onsite and you can validate your ticket for $5 parking. If you don't have a car, the brown line Wellington stop is right at Masonic! There are also a few bus stops around, so public transit is very easily accessible. During difficult moments, the staff has been so kind and thoughtful. I had a minor surgery at the outpatient center here in the fall and the entire experience ran smoothly. All staff working communicated everything that was happening so I never felt out of the loop. After the surgery, I was taken care of by the sweet nurses who stayed with me until my ride came to pick me up.

Elliott L.

Yelp
The waiting room is dark, dirty and depressing. The staff I met were indifferent, incompetent, rather poorly dressed and hungry. The 300 lb registration clerk was feeding from an enormous bag of chips the entire time I was there. After waiting two hours in an almost empty room I left in disgust and went to a different hospital. I found the entire experience appalling.

E H.

Yelp
I'm going to be as fair and objective as I can. My experience with Illinois Masonics Emergency room was top notch. I was taken there by ambulance for heart issues. . They pretty much saved my life. I was then admitted to the hospital. The in hospital care I received was professional , compassionate care . I really felt I was in good hands up until I was released and scheduled for surgery. Then.... The real problems start to arise. you get referred to a staff doctor and the cardiac care office affiliated with the hospital . You assume there will be a continuation of high quality care you received at the ER and the hospital. You would be wrong . In all honesty , it's a shit show. Without going into detailed specifics, Here's a list of only a few of the negatives: Poor communicators Disorganized Inconsistent Lack of compassion Lack of interest in their jobs Procedurally Untrained Lack of knowledge in their specialty Poorly managed Bad attitudes This is specifically regarding the 3134 N Clark St. facility and the cardiac care staff located there . My advice is use the ER and hospital at Illinois Masonic. Once you're stable, look for a doctor affiliated with an institution that specializes in cardiac care and has specialized doctors and staff . Because the ER and hospital save you at a critical life threatening time in your life, does not mean you owe it to accept mediocre after care . Best regards

Nathaniel J.

Yelp
Illinois Masonic hospital has served up a dose of Let us serve you in excellence. My experience in this hospital leading up to my procedure starting out with my informative meeting with Dr. Giovanetti which was very informative and really just eased my mind and heart going into such a procedure having not been in this situation ever before it certainly gave me peace and set my mind and heart at ease for what was lying ahead of me. From the moment I checked into the hospital it was as though I was showing up at one of Chicago's finest hotels or restaurants because the staff was extraordinary. From the nurses, I woke up to one of the most excellent nurses I've ever experienced in my entire life by the name of Meagan right after my surgery. The way she cared for me anticipating my every need going above and beyond the call of duty it was as though God rolled out the red carpet in service during my entire stay here in this hospital from the icu to the time I was let go: such great staffing at this academic hospital‼ 10's across the board‼ I immediately got to know the staffing taking down names and keeping record because my experience was so superb! From Anne Harvey nurse in cardiology, Jazmine Gonzalez was fantastic NCT. There was a Lily RN There was an awesome nurse whom apparently has a reputation as one of the hardest working Nurses in the hospital by the name of Joseph some call him Joe, this young man has such an incredible hospitable spirit of excellence upon him. James Ryberg resident doctor‼‼ Henry Stevens Nurse as I took the liberty to write down names of some very awesome employees that deserves honorable mention. Maddie was amazing thank God for her excellent service‼ A beautiful professional nurse by the name of Kahoe this young professional was awesome‼I had such an amazing team of professionals that constantly kept checking in on me and keeping informed of my progress! I'm so grateful also for Dr. Allen Beale whose reputation proceeds him! You know it's something to be said of an employee when other colleagues of theirs are speaking of their incredible work work ethic, character and integrity in the excellent manner in which they work and carry themselves on a daily basis‼ Such was spoken of highly Meagan, Joseph and Dr. Allan Beale. I really enjoyed my stay and the way that I was cared for! This was the absolute best experience and I highly recommend this hospital that moves with such a strong spirit of hospitality, this is where you want to be especially if your sick and need good care and the absolute best in professionalism and care‼ Thank you to everyone that worked with Dr. Giovanetti, Dr. Allan Beale whose reputation and special thank you goes out to Michelle who is an excellent assistant to Dr. Allan Beale along with a young professional by the name of Kisha‼‼‼ Special thanks also goes out to Dr. Benjamin who also cared for me as well leading up this surgery. I am so very grateful for being recipient of an amazing team of professionals‼ Thanks again for your excellence in service Illinois Masonic‼

Mic A.

Yelp
This is by far the best medical care I've ever received in my life. The doctors are so thoughtful and keep you informed every step along the way. The facilities are clean and updated and they really do their best to make you feel comfortable and safe. I appreciate this hospital very much.

Yelp
Nurses and techs were amazing. Billing however violate CSM billing policy (article A53778). "Providers may not charge for items/services that are part of the procedure" yet my bill (which they claim is correct) includes a charge for contrast and a charge for CT with contrast. In addition, despite repeated requests, they are unwilling to provide the start and stop times for an IV ("providers should submit documentation indicating the volume, start and stop times... Of any drugs and solutions provided.") Every medicine was double billed. Their billing department is unwilling to justify and explain these discrepancies, or answer questions, and only insist that the bill is accurate.

Yelp
I've had nothing but wonderful experiences at Advocate Illinois Masonic! Dr. Reis was my physician for a few years and she was super kind, and never made me feel rushed. Sadly, I have moved and couldn't keep Dr. Reis! The phlebotomists were also super nice! I hate getting blood draws, but they made it less anxiety provoking and painless ;)! Parking was $5 a few years ago (not sure if this has increased recently), but very painful to get through the parking garage because it is congested around there. I would recommend using public transportation or having someone drop you off! The street parking around the hospital is zoned, so if you do not have a Lakeview permit, you will not be allowed to park there!

Miles W.

Yelp
Wait times were terrible. staff was rude and did not care to help. Terrible bedside manner by all staff I worked. Was charged 6 months of rent to be treated like a dog at a vet for 5 hours.

Yelp
On May 8th, 2024, my signature at the ER was forged on the consent form, without my knowledge or consent, by the person registering me. I have the printout from the computer with my name on it, but it isn't my signature. Rose Cosme, of Patients Relations, has been doing everything in her power to suppress the truth and come up with lame, nonsensical retorts in order to quash my complaint. This woman couldn't care less about the patients, only about covering her butt and the hospital's butt. Rose Cosme just told me over the phone that camera footage doesn't show anyone signing anything (wow--I guess the signature on the consent form appeared out of thin air), and in the same breath, after I asked her if the camera shows *me* signing anything (since I never signed anything even though my signature is right there on the consent form), she replied that the camera shows me standing near the desk signing something. I thought you just said the camera doesn't show anyone signing anything. Get your facts straight, lady. To reiterate: I was never handed any consent form to read. I never signed any consent form. A signature of my name is right there on the consent form. Someone other than me signed the consent form. Conclusion: The person at the registration desk forged my signature on the consent form at some point while I was waiting to be seen by a doctor. I have filed a police report about the forgery. This hospital is big and powerful, and I'm the little guy. They have already succeeded in removing one of my reviews on another site. Beware of having your privacy and HIPAA laws violated by this hospital, and know that you will get zero help from them if you have a complaint against them. You know, if they're like that when it comes to a forged signature, what must they be like if they screw up in even more serious ways and matters? Patient, Beware!... August 2, 2024 John Zaharis, Patient Access Director, called me today and told me they were unable to substantiate my "claim." Of course not. We wouldn't want your hospital accused of any wrongdoings, now, would we? I said look at the camera footage, which Rose Cosme had mentioned. He said he wasn't aware of any camera footage. I said, well, look at it and see if it shows me being given the tablet with the consent form on it, reading it for a while, signing it, and then handing it back to the registration woman. It's very easy to do if you really want to. The police officer that agreed with me the two signatures are nothing alike, and went ahead and filed the police report for me? John Zaharis said that's not necessarily true. So then what *is* true, John Zaharis? I have a copy of the consent form with a signature on it that isn't mine, and I challenge you to find camera footage of me standing there reading and signing the consent form. But you won't look at the camera footage because you're not interested in finding out the truth, only in covering your aspic. After listening to what he called "your side of the story" (I didn't know there was another side to this story of a forged signature appearing on my consent form), and reiterating, again and again, like the dutiful, obedient employee he's expected to be, about not being able to substantiate my claim, he told me he was closing the case. He was closing the case. I said to him, "You know what? I'll be fine, but you're stuck with that awful woman, who forgot to give me the consent form, forged my signature on the consent form, and then lied about it, denying that she had ever done that. And this woman deals with gravely ill, injured, and wounded people at the registration desk at the ER and has access to all their most personal information." Good luck with that. All John Zaharis had to say is, "I'm ending this conversation." I slammed my flip-phone shut. Both Rose Cosme and John Zaharis are prime examples of people in powerful positions a little cog like me has no chance against, even when truth is on my side. What am I to do? They work for a powerful hospital that has slews of lawyers. They can do whatever they want with full impunity. Their loyalty is to the institution, not to the customers--patients, in this case. And they have a way of making corruption on their part go away. Rose Cosme shamelessly lied throughout this entire thing. She is a truly reprehensible person. John Zaharis is an unprincipled, spineless little man who will back up a lying employee with the aid and backing of his unethical superiors. Patient, Beware!

Yelp
My nearly 90 year old grandmother was put into 7222 today 01/03/2025 from the ER. I asked one of the nurses where the bathroom was and was waived off and told down the hall. I had to ask several questions because down the hall isn't an explanation. She was rude and gave me such attitude, for no apparent reason. Some people shouldn't be hired into the healthcare system. We are all stressed out from coming up from the ER. Normally I like this hospital. Exceptional care in the ER, but the 7th floor, I could've done without the additional trauma just because I asked a question. I didn't even interrupt her. Just horrible.

Yelp
My time at Advocate started in the Emergency room where they were able to see me with no wait and were very thorough with their tests, and then transitioned to being admitted overnight. Every doctor I met was attentive and thorough in their explanation of what was going on and being done. They worked really hard to make sure I was okay before I went home, running a multitude of tests and scans, slowly ruling out the worst case scenarios. The nurses all were friendly and able to answer questions. It was overall just a great experience for being in the hospital. I'm saying all this ahead of getting my bill because who knows how I'll feel then.

Lita B.

Yelp
the quality of care I received here was outstanding. I was admitted for a fractured ankle, which had to be operated on, and the staff ,from emergency to my stay on 8 Stone sub acute floor, was professional and caring at the same time. I'm including the doctors, nurses, CNAs , PT,OT and support staff. A special shout out to Indu, the nurse who treated me as if I was part of her family than you all!

Dylan H.

Yelp
Words cannot describe how excellent the doctors were when my father needed care. Dr. Goodman and his team kept my father stable and in good condition. My father had a heart attack and he flatlined temporarily, but then he kept pushing with everything the had to bring him back. Not all heroes wear capes. Definitely an experience to remember! This is the place to be, look no further. Dr. Goodman's got you!

Yelp
There is a lack of supervision for the nurses on the midnight shift. There's a reason they're at 2.5 stars. They obviously don't care about patient reviews or something would have been addressed.

Yelp
This place is kind of a joke when compared to other hospital facilities in Chicago. St. Joseph's, Swedish, Rush, you name it, are all operating on a high level. Illinois Masonic is more like a prison hospital - no one seems to know what is going on, staff doesn't communicate with each other or with patients, nor do they seem to care which makes it even worse. That is a direct result of poor leadership. My spouse was left unattended for hours only to realize they were forgotten. One staff member will tell family it's ok to have visitors only to show up, get clearance from reception to visit the floor/room, then be confronted by the entire staff on the floor that the patient cannot have visitors - making us feel thoroughly embarrassed and uncomfortable. These are not "isolated incidents" if they happen every single time we try this hospital. Living in Lakeview for 20 years and visiting IL Masonic for procedures and ER visits about once a year always turns out to be a regret. Drive an extra 2 mins and go to St Joseph's where they know what they're doing.

Yelp
To keep it short, you will get better help in less time somewhere else. To elaborate, *Front desk staff is rude and shows no understanding of sympathy: patient was struggling to speak because of pain and employee was trying to rush him *No sense of urgency: even when patient is there for terrible chest/abdominal pain, it took over 2 hours before a doctor appeared, and there was never any attempt made to make patient comfortable. The pain caused a panic attack while in the bed, and the most anyone did was glance over. When the doctor did finally show up, it was to say patient was being discharged, and the current prescribed medication (which obviously isn't working!) was refilled. So, just don't waste your time.

Yelp
I had an appointment at this place (Chicago IL 836 W. Wellington on 6/25/23) to get an MRI on my knee. All the women who assisted me were awesome. Kudos to them. Upon leaving, I handed my Parking Ticket to a dark-haired guy at the front desk on the first floor. This was about 8:30 am. When I tried to exit from the Parking Garage, there was an automated voice prompt requesting me to pay the ticket. I was surprised and a bit angry because the ticket was not validated. I hate to think the worst of people, but I suspect that the guy who took my ticket thought it would somehow be funny to purposefully not validate it so I could limp all the way back into the building. He and his buddy saw I had an issue with my knee when I checked in. The machine did not take cash, but luckily, I had my American Express Card with me, so I was able to successfully exit from the Parking Garage without having to limp my way back to the front desk. Having a laugh at the expense of an injured patient is a cheap thrill, and it's not cool.

Yelp
I had foot surgery and everyone was terrific. Nurses, residents, anesthesia, and surgeon were all amazing.

Yelp
I can't thank the staff of Masonic enough for all they did. They were extremely kind and cared for me during the scariest moment of my life.

Yelp
Go to RUSH over this shitty hospital. I just had my cyst removed last Friday and urgently had to do surgery because my cyst was the size of a softball. When I first had the cyst problem in December when I didn't know what was causing the pain.. advocate was the first hospital I went to because it was closest to my house. After waiting for hours in the waiting room, I ended up asking them if I can leave n that they can send the results because my pain eventually went away. But of course when I got home, my pain started acting up AGAIN. I called advocate and they tried blaming it on covid What an effin joke!!!! I ended rushing over to Rush n thank god for RUSH because they found the cyst after doing exams. Yeah it was my fault for letting it go until last Friday but what I'm trying to say is that Advocate hospital staff don't even know what they're doing or talking about. I'll never go back there ever again. GO TO RUSH. They have way better doctors over there and genuinely care about you.

Yelp
Katie in the emergency room is absolutely wonderful! She's like a ray of sunshine, making these past few weeks much more manageable. Thank you, Regina! ;)

Yelp
If I could provide Advocate's ER less than one star I would. The staff is inattentive, the wait time is horrible (4-5 hours is average) and there is little, actually no, sense of urgency or efficiency. My wife came in after injuring her ankle and it took 2.5 hours to get an xray and the wait to see a doctor - 5+ hours. 2 doctors on staff plus 3 residents moved thru 1 patient an hour. For any other business this type of service would cause the business to fail. This ER should. If you have a level 1 trauma go here, otherwise head to any of the other nearby hospitals and ER. Read the reviews - they are beyond accurate.

Yelp
Finding the entrance was very difficult, POORLY marked from the street. Shares the same entrance with the main hospital. Parking is expensive, poorly marked directions inside the office, I had to ask for directions 4 times to get to my destination. The services received were average, nothing special from similar facilities. This place really needs to look at the whole experience from the patients point of view and make changes that benefit the patient. Not just close their eyes and let the money roll in. Here's a picture of their entrance I pulled from google...

Yelp
What can I say that hasn't been said before here on this thread...This place is hot garbage...From the rude staff to the doctors that don't give a crap about patients. Even the equipment used here is garbage....What time period are these MRI machines from...They are basically small coffin like tombs where they slide you in head first (with a gate over your face) ...You will feel like you are being buried alive...If you didn't suffer from claustrophobia before you will now. I've had MRI's done before no problem in big open air tanning bed like equipment with beautiful ambient music playing...So relaxing. Here at Masonic they give you some cheap ear plugs to put into your ears and slide you into a What feels like a claustrophobic death trap...If you make it for the 30 minutes you are sure to suffer from PTSD afterwards. And the doctors here love to over prescribe medications while not explaining why? They gave me so many steroids I damn near went mental with the heavy dose...I should have stuck with Northwestern Avoid this place like the plague.

Yelp
You wait in the ER waiting room for far too long and they don't care if you're in pain. They let you just sit here. Labs that take 30 minutes they delay. Almost 2 hours later waiting for simple blood work and urine sample results and nothing! I haven't even gotten the ct that was supposibly ordered yet. One of the worst hospitals! Update: Waiting for 4 hours in the waiting room now.

Yelp
Don't be scared away by the low reviews, if you look around, every hospital has a lower score on reviews than other kinds of businesses. Also, yes of course expect a wait in the ER. That's how it is everywhere I've ever been. They focus on people in dire need first, as they should (people with heart attacks or trauma, for example, people who could die if they waited), and then they work their way down the list. The staff is thorough, professional and kind. They do their due diligence in getting to the bottom of issues, which I very much appreciate. All that said, my only caveat is that for a kid, don't go to this ER. They don't tend to be quite as knowledgeable about kid health as they could be. That's the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of five. I mean, if your kid is having a life-threatening emergency, and this is the closest hospital, go for it. But, if you have even a little bit of time to spare, go to Lurie's instead. I'd make an exception to this statement for the Pediatric Development Center - these folks ARE experts in kids and are wonderful.

Yelp
I can't thank Illinois Masonic Hospital enough for the amazing team of doctors and nurses who have treated members of my family. The care is superior to any other hospital that I have been to. The wait in the emergency room is never too long. The valet parking is so convenient and self park is also a breeze. They also have inexpensive lodging available across the street in studio apartments with a kitchenette and bathroom with shower! I highly recommend this hospital to anyone needing immediate care.

Yelp
A sibling of mine was admitted December 2021 for back surgery. I felt comfortable that this hospital was the right hospital to have a serious medical surgery performed. Surgery went well. "However" during the healing process after surgery my sibling was resting in a private room . As my sibling was healing, occupational therapy was scheduled. After a week of receiving inpatient occupational therapy, my sibling was transferred to the rehab floor to continue therapy, but was assigned to a semi private room with another patient. Seriously ‍ during the pandemic. Due to that roommate having visitors not practicing or taking safety precautions, that patient became ill ‍ . It was then established Covid was present in the room after that patient tested positive. So, my sibling was then tested and was quarantined on the Covid floor with minimal symptoms. Thank God it was caught early- BUT between the doctors and caseworkers his occupational therapy was put on hold for 7 days. At that time they wanted to discharge my sibling and transfer him to a care facility with occupational therapy ‍, because insurance wouldn't cover both "Covid and Inpatient Occupational therapy as one. Seriously- even though this happened in the hospital under their care. I felt if the hospital had monitored visitation appropriately - my sibling wouldn't have be in that position. Now mind you my sibling can't walk due to the surgery and the hospital postponed his inpatient rehab. Also going home in that condition was impossible and because there was a family member with serious cancer issues being cared for. I am very very very upset and disappointed in the treatment my sibling received and the lack of treatment and support after losing the occupational therapy care which I feel impacted improper recovery to walk normal again. I know the doctors and nurses were working overtime and dealing with a high demand for patient care during the pandemic , but TLC is still important to the heart and soul of patients needing proper care. I didn't post this in 1/2022 because I stopped the press and things are different and a little better today, but it still needs to be noted that this happened and we pray such a incident never happens again and if it does we've all learned a lesson in human kindness, compassion, behavior and mindfulness.

Yelp
I noticed there are many 1-star reviews, but I don't have any complaints. Scheduling was fast and easy, and everyone was polite.

Yelp
Worst hospital ever. Inept people working here. The staff are extremely rude and unable to do simple tasks and follow through. The nurses are rude and lack any sort of compassion.
