A Beloved Baltimore Scoop Shop Busts Into D.C. — And More Openings | Eater DC

"In Georgetown Afghania opened as a white-tablecloth Afghani restaurant offering dumplings, kabobs, slow-braised and smoked meats, and regional dishes such as shinwari karahi (a Pakistani-influenced simmered stew with masala, tomatoes, pickled onions, and chilies); the female-run restaurant also provides plenty of vegan and vegetarian options." - Tierney Plumb

The Hottest New Restaurants Around D.C., April 2024

"Month-old Afghania brings Georgetown dumplings, kabobs, slow-braised and smoked meats, and other meaty nods to the “Afghan frontier food” of its surrounding mountainous regions. That includes shinwari karahi, a Pakistani-influenced simmered stew made with masala, tomatoes, pickled onions, and chilies. Female-run Afghania is the latest area Afghan restaurant from Sofia Masroor and her three daughters, who are also behind Bistro Aracosia in Palisades, Aracosia in McLean, and Afghan Bistro in Springfield. Its newest location continues to offer plenty of vegan and vegetarian options." - Tierney Plumb

Women at Afghanistan’s Saffron Farms are Scared to Work Under the Taliban | Eater DC

"Founded from a D.C. apartment in June by Tahmina Ghaffer, Moonflowers is a saffron-importing business created to support a community of largely female farmers in the Herat region of Afghanistan. The name is an homage to the predawn harvesting process: workers hand-pick fragile purple crocus flowers before sunrise, removing the three delicate stigmas by hand within the flowers' 48-hour lifespan — a labor-intensive effort that can require upward of 70,000 flowers to yield one pound of spice that retails for roughly $5,000 to $10,000. Moonflowers emphasizes quality (super negin and sargol stigmas, assessed by color, aroma, and flavor) and sources Afghan saffron that has recently been ranked among the best in the world by the International Taste and Quality Institute; Ghaffer also frames saffron as a profitable alternative to opium that empowers women, who reportedly perform about 80 percent of processing. Although the Taliban takeover has put female harvesters at risk and led to some women being too frightened to return to the fields (with male laborers harvesting this season), Moonflowers says it has enough product to last through spring 2022, strong operations and sourcing, and remains committed to supporting Afghan women while donating to causes such as Skateistan (1 percent of profits) and the International Rescue Committee." - Stephanie Ganz

Amazing experience! My wife wanted to try Afghani food and has been craving lamb lately so this restaurant was a huge score. I lucked out at the start of the evening with finding a free parking spot about 2-3 blocks away and made my reservation time. We were immediately seated and found everyone (I mean everyone) to be so welcoming and heartfelt that we felt we were family. It’s very nice in the restaurant, with a setting perfect for taking someone special. As for the food, it was absolutely delicious. Everything we tried was so good, with wonderful flavors. We couldn’t finish everything so we made sure to leave room for dessert while taking leftovers home. Do not let anything go to waste. We started with an assortment of dumplings, all of which were delicious in their own way (pumpkin, spicy beef, and leeks & scallions). The accompanying sauces were all wonderful, but the mango habanero was my favorite (and no, not too spicy). For my meal I tried the (veal) Afghanistan palou, which had a wonderful smokiness and the most amazing rice. My wife had lamb shank with a tomato based sauce, and loved it. We capped off our meal with a cardamom cake (tres leches style) and sheer birinj, a delicious rice pudding with light airy flavors.

Never really had afghan food before but happy went here. Was an overall great experience. Got the signature lamb, everything was good. Bread was good especially with sauce options. Came with our son, was a little nicer than kid Restaurant but made due.

Food was well-seasoned and delicious! We sat outside and the atmosphere was relaxing and chic. The service was also outstanding. Cannot wait to return!

If you want to impress your friends and family with an extravagant night of unique, delicious food at considerably reasonable prices, then look no further. Forget about best afghan food, or even best middle-eastern food. This was some of the best FOOD I’ve ever had. The flavor profiles were stupendous and very unique. The bread served at the outset comes with four different sauces, each with their own flavor, and they are all delicious independently, and when mixed together. We also ordered the dumpling flight and each was fantastic in its own right. Their menu boasts a wealth of diverse selections, and includes robust vegetarian and vegan offerings. The staff were prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable. The atmosphere features a soft, dim light, with high-class embellishments like white table cloths and quality silverware, coupled with pleasant, upbeat, ambient music in the background. Considering the overall experience, the average menu price is impressively reasonable. I have had less pleasant dining experiences for double the price at other locations. I highly recommend Afghania.

Superb. This delightful restaurant deserves your patronage. Afghania is a delicious, warm hug of a restaurant with a wide array of choices for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. The experience is enhanced by thoughtful, attentive service and a cozy atmosphere. Stairs to the second floor are on the steep side, so the less mobile might wish to opt for ground floor seating. Our waiter welcomed our questions on the menu and his recommendations were spot on, geared impeccably to our tastes. Our party of three devoured our vegan pumpkin dumplings and Afghania salad, following up with lamb entrees. If you are a lamb devotee, the lamb shank dishes are especially delectable and you can expect to take food home. Even if you’re not sober-curious, Afghania’s mocktails are worth tasting. Our group loved the sour cherry/lime and cranberry/orange libations, both light and refreshing. We finished the meal by splitting airy slices of chocolate and almond cake. We look forward to our next visit.

An amazing experience! The service was fantastic but the food was another story… everything was absolutely fantastic. The meat was great the spices perfect. Very highly recommended, our table tried 4 different dishes and each one was top notch.

Outstanding restaurant with excellent service and incredible dishes with the special something. Every bite had so much flavor and a clever twist that you couldn‘t wait for the next one. It‘s not cheap but absolutely worth it. My favorite was the Afghania Palou - traditional smoked bone-in lamb shank. 100% recommended.

Afghania serves delicious and high quality food but many of the flavors were repetitive. I like that they have a lot of vegetarian options.
