On the Grid : African Queen Fabrics

"You are spoilt for choice in Brixtons offerings of African shops, selling traditional, vibrant, printed textiles - as fabric lengths, bags, clothes and decorative items. The best being 'African Queen Fabrics' within Brixton Market, selling exquisite dutch hand printed fabrics. Another place of interest is ‘Rachel and Malika’s’, a beautiful, fairly traded and well stocked shop selling an eclectic mix of African jewellery, home furnishings and gifts, all lovingly selected during their travels to the Sahara region of West Africa." - Eley Kishimoto

Probably spent half a lifetime in this shop just deciding what fabrics to get. They have clothes as well, priced more affordably than other independent stalls in Brixton, but you can tell they aren't as well made. Great service though - the boss was really friendly and will give discounts if you buy more.

We have had one of the worse experiences in this shop. The man who works there is rude and lying to customers just to sell an extra piece. If you see something you like get it, but never ask them to make something customise for you. They made me pay full price in advance and they made something complety different of what I ordered. When I explained this is not what I wanted he went very agressive and without any solution. I wouldnt recomend this shop at all.

Excellent customer service! You don’t get pushed to buy stuff and are given space if you need time to make decisions. Great variety of African print materials.

With a wide selection of fabrics, accessories, garments and knick knacks to hand, you'll definitely find something you like here. I was drawn in the the unique shirts, but the fabrics kept me there. The stack of off cut fabrics is the best value for money, with most being Prince Holland Block Wax prints, with two for £5 and packed full of enticing patterns and colours. Pretty much everything is in an African style, the name doesn't lie.

With especial thanks to Wendy for being so friendly and helpful when we started asking for help with the clothes. There are some amazing items in this shop- fully recommend going in and looking through the rails: you never know what you might find!
