"Ozone Coffee, Barbican Old Street. It’s as if the aroma of Ozone Coffee keeps this joint buzzing at all times of the day. With roasters, chefs and baristas all in the same building, it is no surprise that the place is such an active hotspot. The great thing about this place is that you can get anything from their signature Prosecco “Sottoriva” or a pick-me-up empire blend flat white. Not only do the drinks go down a treat, but also their food (especially the cakes) has us popping in on the way to work."

"Toykobike, Barbican Old Street. Recommended by the cyclists in the studio, this shop is a shrine to design and two-wheeled transport. From the perfectly positioned bikes and accessories to the considered lighting, tokyobike exudes design and that’s just the shop. Originally founded in the quiet Tokyo suburb of Yanaka, the bikes themselves are designed to be light and comfortable underpinned with the brand’s philosophy that “a bike is simply a way to enjoy your city, it’s as much about the journey as the destination”. We’re sure most people who have cycled around Old Street roundabout might have a thing to say about that."

"Ceviche Old St, Barbican Old Street. Fancy some colourful, beautiful and delicious Peruvian food? Well, Ceviche is the place to go. Housed in the former Alexander Trust Dining Room built in 1898, Ceviche offers a unique dining experience that, in their own words, “breaks down the boundaries between chef and customer” with an open plan kitchen and large grill. From the fresh ceviche made straight in front of you to superfood salads and delights – including grilled octopus – this place has delights for all."

"Bunhill Fields Cemetery, Barbican Old Street. Just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Old Street and City Road, the green space of Bunhill Cemetery offers a sanctuary of calm. This beautiful yet small graveyard is amazingly the resting place for an estimated 120,000 bodies including William Blake and Daniel Defoe. It’s also home to some extremely tame and well fed squirrels who won’t be afraid to ask you for food."

"On the Bab, Barbican Old Street. No-one does Korean quite like On The Bab. With super quick service, this place is a hotspot for a quick bite before heading out for evening drinks (you might need extra napkins), or for a seriously flavourful lunch. Choose from a varied menu with some of our favourites being Seaweed Salad, Yangum Chicken, and delicious soft steamed buns – with a filling of your choice. We’re sure that this infusion of fragrant flavours will have you wanting more."

"Shoreditch Grind, Barbican Old Street. We used to walk past the previous iteration of this quirky circular building next to Old Street roundabout and wish it was something a lot more interesting than a wilting mobile phone shop. ‘Sex, coffee and rock n roll’ is the signature of the Shoreditch branch of the Grind family and there’s a lot of character bursting out through the front windows on any day. It probably helps that they have regularly-changing 1950s style cinema signage on the front and cocktails to boot. People aren’t lying when they say they make the best espresso martinis around."

Part agency, part gallery and part shop, this little space in Hoxton Square is a must to check out some of the latest photographers, artists and illustrators on the scene. Started by Kessels Kramer and exhibiting new and established talent since 2009, the gallery is a good bet to catch a private view or opening on a First Thursday. When finished browsing the work, make sure you check out their books and other quirks, they have a well curated selection of gift ideas and reading matter."

Lunchtimes get busy quickly, so arrive early to avoid disappointment – they don’t take bookings. With live events on almost every evening, this is the place to come for a night to remember. "Strongroom Bar & Kitchen, Barbican Old Street. A hidden gem tucked away off Curtain Road, the Strongroom Bar & Kitchen is definitely a favourite with our studio. You can drink in any of their three bars and dine with their no-nonsense menu – their tasty nachos serve well as a snack to satisfy a group of people looking to ease into the evening with a midweek drink. The open courtyard is one of the area’s biggest, transporting you away from the bustle of Old Street – although it gets very busy in the evenings with the local clientele. The building, which dates from the 1970s, was renovated and designed by London and Berlin-based architects Casper Mueller Kneer and includes three major exhibition spaces as well as private viewing rooms. With boundary-pushing curations it’s worth a visit for a taste of contemporary art without the crowds. And there’s a well stocked bookshop to boot."

Designed within two strikingly different adjoining buildings - a listed warehouse and a contrasting glass apartment block, Village East combines both cosy booth seating, counter dining, a tucked away dining room and a spacious cocktail lounge. It’s a treat to explore and is popular with antique traders, tourists and bargain hunters. The 200 plus stalls also include food, fashion and crafts. Browsing is like going through Fagin’s loot. Get there early or you’ll be disappointed to see traders packing up around lunchtime."

"Bermondsey Arts Club, Bermondsey Street. From the streets this is a public toilet but look closer and you’ll see a menu attached to the railings saying ‘Welcome to Bermondsey Arts Club’. Head down the steps and you’ll enter a cool den of debauchery. This is one of the quirkiest renovations - a public toilet turning in to a cocktail bar. Brass panelings, amber glass features and walnut colours line the walls and the marble-clad bar takes centre stage. The table tops are made of stone that was originally used as toilet cubicle separators, obviously thoroughly washed. This 20s art-deco themed club is true Great Gatsby, so grab a Negroni and imagine you’re Daisy Buchanan."

Tucked away in the corner of Bermondsey Square, Hej doubles as a cafe/flower shop with bundles and bundles of colourful flowers contrasting the front of the vividly green building. "Shortwave Cinema, Bermondsey Street. This cosy, lusciously red velvet 52 seat cinema, cafe and bar screens the best of art house cinema, recent releases and previews for emerging filmmakers. Situated in Bermondsey Square it offers an intimate and relaxed environment where, of an evening, you could just as easily happen upon an independent film festival, a directors debut, a late night viewing or dancing alongside local DJs."

"A corner of the world, Bethnal Green. "A corner of the world" is a convivial and lively Portuguese café that opened in April 2015. Coffee Portuguese-style, pastéis de nata, pastéis de bacalhau and a range of tasty toasties, it's perfect for a casual lunch. "The York hall, Bethnal Green. The York Hall is an event venue that was built in 1929 and opened by the Duke of York. It is one of the most famous British boxing venues with a lot of history, but many different events happen here. Quite regularly, for exemple, vintage clothes and/or furniture fairs are organised. The interior has a lot of character, very British and is definitely worth to be checked out. It is also a leisure center with gym and swimming pool."

"The Sun Tavern, Bethnal Green. The Sun Tavern is a stylish cocktail & whisky bar which also serve Poitin (a traditional Irish alcohol), fine beers and surprisingly great coffee! The place makes me think of a pirates boat. It is quite small, very dark with old brick walls, wooden floor and wooden tables. DJs are playing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and there is always a great vibe here."

"The Old George, Bethnal Green. The Old George is typically the kind of very British pub that you will love! It is a beautifully restored East End pub dating back to the 1700s, with wooden floor, vintage furniture, old brick walls and some flowery wallpapers. The place has a cosy living room feel, so it's always very pleasant to spend a moment here, either for a Sunday Roast or for a late night with friends. They also serve incredible gastro-pub food like Truffled wild mushroom mac'n'cheese or Crispy pig cheek croquettes and fine Sunday roasts. They now opened a restaurant at the first floor that I highly recommend to try!Last thing, they have a big beer garden in the backyard."

"E. Pellicci, Bethnal Green. You can't find a place with more character and authenticity than E.Pellicci! This legendary Italian café is in the hands of the same family since 1900. Awesome lasagna and cannelloni are prepared by Mama Maria since 1961. You don't go there only for the food, but also for the unique convivial atmosphere full of liveliness. Even if the place is busy, you will always be served with a smile and the staff always take time to talk to their customer. To me, it feels like a shot of happiness every time!Little anecdote: the famous gangsters, the Kray brothers used to go every day. Some scenes from the movie "Legend" with Tom Hardy have been shot in the restaurant."

"Jonestown, Bethnal Green. This is the place Bethnal Green needed for his young and creative population. Jonestown refurbished an empty corner of an old building into a colorful coffee shop where the locals quickly started hanging out. Good vibe, good music and a friendly staff, Jonestown is this kind of places that makes you happy. The coffee is excellent (Single origin coffee from Papua New Guinea) and their cakes are delicious. Many people come here to work during the day, enjoying the free wi-fi and great beverages."

"The star of Bethnal Green, Bethnal Green. The Star of Bethnal Green is a traditional East London boozer with a young and creative clientele and a friendly staff. They've got different offers and events everyday, like Pub Quizz every Tuesdays, 2 for £10 cocktail every Thursdays and they organise parties with DJs on Friday and Saturday (sometimes on Thursday as well). It is open until 2am, so quite late compared to other pubs and they even have a private karaoke room to hire! For the food, they have a cool concept of kitchen pop-up where they change the residency regularly, usually tasty street-food style."

"The Common E2, Bethnal Green. The Common is an independent coffee shop sharing its space with an architecture studio. The concept aimes to blur the boundaries between private office and public cafe, which makes it a very unique place. The heart of the café is a long communal table where visitors can sit and chat with each other over a great latte and a pain au chocolat. Toasted sandwiches, quiches with salad, soups, avocado on toasts and a selection of cakes and pastries form a varied menu for breakfast and lunch. Hidden gem situated in a quiet street, the Common is a peaceful alternative to the otherwise busy East London.PS: the loo is cute - a little shed in the backyard."

"Satan's whiskers, Bethnal Green. This is the kind of bar where you wouldn't go if nobody told you that it's great. Hidden behind a worn-down facade, Satan's whiskers is actually an awesome classy and quirky cocktail bar. Old ads and bizarre stuffed animals make the interior. The cocktail menu is changed everyday, so you wouldn't get bored and the staff is super friendly."

"Mother Kelly's, Bethnal Green. Mother Kelly’s is the beer paradise, inspired by New-York tap rooms and situated in one of the railway arches of Paradise Row. You have the choice between 23 beers on the tap (which they change pretty much everyday) and a HUGE selection of bottles to pick up from the fridges. Lagers, IPA, stouts, Belgian krieks, brown beers, black beers, cider... there are beers for everyone to discover. The bottles are also available to take-away, so you can do your beer shopping here as well. The place is super convivial, on top of the beers, you can enjoy cheese, meat, vegetable and chocolate boards! There is plenty of space inside and outside on the terrace, perfect to come with a big group of friends."

"Bethnal Green Gardens, Bethnal Green. One of the great things in Bethnal Green is that there are plenty of parks. This one is pretty nice, right next to the station, in front of the old library building. It is never too busy and always peaceful. Bring some nuts and make friend with the little squirrels of the park. They are not timid. If you want, there are even more squirrels in Museum gardens, on the other side of the Museum."

"Café 338, Bethnal Green. Cafe 338 is a typical East London cafe. The place is very popular and always busy with a mix of old and new locals. On the weekend, there is often a queue but you won't wait more than 10mins usually. On the menu you will find all the classics of British breakfast cuisine for a very honest price. They have different set menus but you can also create your own breakfast by picking out all your favorites ingredients. There is a lot of choice!"

The decoration is not what you expect from a Japanese restaurant, but is definitely typical of East London with an industrial and minimal look."

The interior is very traditional, all the staff multitasking swiftly, the menu has its self-made charms, and the atmosphere is extremely human and friendly. The food is fabulous and affordable—a combo which comes ever closer to impossible in central London. A waiter is always cruising around you making sure you get everything on time and you are served correctly. The sushi is incredible, fresh and lovely, much better than the usual fridge sushis in most places. Katzus are magical too, but they will likely put you to sleep—even the smallest portion challenges our men there."

"Collinge & Clark, Bloomsbury. Probably the most interesting second hand bookshop, ever. A big statement but to anyone interested in design, and particular typography this is an absolute gem of a place. From independent private presses to first editions of artists such as William Morris it's a great place to browse and find inspiration.Interesting(ish) fact: The Shop Front was used in the comedy series 'Black Books'."

"Forest, Bloomsbury. A collection of Scandinavian and Northern European mid-century modern furniture, with the use of innovative pattern by a series of talented illustrators and designers. You will fall in love more than once in this shop - the colour palette, the attention to detail and the beautiful furniture will definitely leave you day-dreaming for the rest of the day!"

"The School of Life, Bloomsbury. The School of Life is known for providing an insight into the simple, everyday things that generally make life more enjoyable: lighthearted books on existential topics, colourful stationery, notebooks with quotes and advices etc. Their space is located a few minutes down from Russell Square, and is easily recognisable by its big yellow sign. The people are warm and lovely and make you feel at home. The events organised there are always extremely curious (and complimented by absolutely delicious bites). The guest speakers come from various backgrounds, usually having been in a position of mentorship which gave them the wisdom for which they have been invited. The crowd is ever so beautifully diverse: we met a philosophy student/biology teacher, a painter and an interior design tutor at a previous event. Check at their website for any upcoming events - it may sound like something unusual but you can be sure that is will be spark some interesting ideas."

"Aesop, Bloomsbury. Well this is the best of the best (in our scale of best-ness). Seriously, it smells good, it looks good, it feels heavenly, and the stores are like little sanctuaries. Dim lights, water flowing on the walls as if by some mysterious magic, a feeling of serenity floating in the room and enticing you to stay, meditate and enjoy life. Everyone who has tried from their products, can recognise the Aesop signature scent. The service is also as beautiful—you will be welcome to try everything you are curious about, the guys are great at recognising what your skin needs and will recommend some of their amazing products. Go grab some samples and enjoy."

"Dapur, Bloomsbury. Malaysian is one of the favoured exotic cuisines here, yet it’s not as common as other middle-eastern ones. Which is why when one stumbles upon a place like Dapur, it is an exciting cultural experience — the way the staff talk and act, the interior, the taste of the food, the scent of the space which welcomes you at the very entrance. It is a sweetly organised small bright room where everyone sits on one long table in the middle with the chance to observe the chefs and their magic. "The Lamb, Bloomsbury. Still going strong, The Lamb has been standing since 1729. It's one of those great British pubs where 10 minutes can turn into 3 hours. The Victorian decor is cosy with an old-school British feel and with not a single TV in sight you genuinely feel like you can relax and enjoy some decent conversation. The guys behind the bar make the experience an enjoyable one serving great beer (and a range of other beverages). it's inevitable that you will enjoy the warm atmosphere and the authenticity of this great olde British boozer."

"The Espresso Room, Bloomsbury. Most of Espresso room’s baristas have no previous experience, everyone is taught the essentials and the coffee is consistently excellent. They smile, know you, ask you about your day and make you laugh whilst preparing you the tastiest cup of coffee you can get in Bloomsbury. The space itself is pretty small but it lends itself perfectly to the set-up they have created with long single file queues positioned adjacent to the super cool baristas. This is the kind of coffee you don't mind queueing for (there's usually a queue) but with the chilled environment you can sit, you can stand, you can chat and you can guarantee that the coffee presented to you will be heavenly. TIP - The anzac cookie and/or the millionaire shortbread will blow you mind."

In typical Brixton tradition, the outside is adorned with a colourful and rather magical mural to brighten up even the darkest of days!"

"Evelyn Grace Acadamy, Brixton. The world-renowned architectural practice followed the principle ‘schools within schools’ in designing this contemporary institution. This rather impressive Acadamy is infact made up for four smaller schools, which you can see from the distinctive and dynamic design."

"Reliance Arcade, Brixton. This famous shopping arcade is a beautiful and treasured example of Art Deco architecture. On entering you cannot miss the slogan ‘SHOP HERE, SAVE MONEY’, which, is exactly right (if you are after some popcorn, an unconventional greetings card, a cobbler or a new weave). The narrow interior has tiny units either side of the walkway, home to a rich variety of unique businesses that have been serving the local community for decades."

"Franco Manca, Brixton. This little pizzeria is nestled within Brixton Village market and attracts people from far and wide to taste their famous authentic sourdough pizzas. Each lovingly made with only organic ingredients, fired in a traditional wood oven and great specials board. Be prepared to queue, the wait is worth it!"

"The Windmill, Brixton. A unique windmill, formally known as 'Ashby's Mill', built in 1816 and worked by wind until 1862. "Quality Chop House, Clerkenwell. Restaurant, deli and wine bar all share equal claim for this entry. Set in an old working mans chop house the listed benches and tables are appropriately spartan, everything is focused on the food. Sitting with your knees touching your dinner partner is a small price to pay for the seasonal, British set menu that is a real culinary treat. Floral plates and the best waiting staff round of this charming, intimate and memorable restaurant. The wine bar has (we’re assured by people who know), some exotic and exciting bottles that can’t be found anywhere else. The deli and butchers next door is where to go if you want to cook your own delicious food from their range of carefully selected specialist and staple produce. They do an impressive selection of fresh cakes and sandwiches too."

"Ye Olde Mitre, Clerkenwell. A tiny bit of Ely in London, this ancient drinking hole has it’s history tied up with the Cambridgeshire Bishops that once had a palace here. History buffs can see if they can spot the old tree and stone pillar built into the front of the wood panelled facade, but it’s classic pork pie and scotch egg territory for the rest of us."

"S&M Tools, Clerkenwell. In the heart of the Hatton Garden jewellery district, this independently run hardware shop is a proper Aladdin’s cave for tools that specialise in the local trade, (they also exhibit at model railway shows). Whilst not normally on the tourist route, this treasure trove is worth a look around for the practically minded magpies amongst us."

"Condor Cycles, Clerkenwell. Open since 1948 and still owned by the same family, Condor sell a range of bikes, from the convenient Brompton to their own Super Acciaio used by members of the pro peloton. They also stock one of the most varied ranges of cycle parts and accessories in the city."

"Kin, Clerkenwell. No not us (although we were there first), but a lovely little eatery specialising in Asian Street Food. We resisted for as long as we could (because of the name clash) but after one lunchtime special – £5 for a Green Curry – we were hooked."

"International Magic Shop, Clerkenwell. Magic, Magic, Magic. One of the team's dad was a pro magician, so we know about magic. Run by proper magic fans, you can find anything from a joke present to a captivating illusion. Also, although this place is very specialist it's very welcoming, and they love to chat and demo all sorts."

A gorgeous stationers, in the traditional sense, this is the kind of place you'll want to stop and appreciate spending 20 minutes to find the perfect pen. "Barrafina, Covent Garden. Barrafina – a tapas kitchen on Drury Lane – doesn’t take reservations, so it’s best to head there early with only one or two people in tow. However, waiting in line goes fast when you’re greeted by friendly and knowledgable staff recommending wine and bar snacks to nibble on – think Marcona almonds rather than Bombay mix. Everything feels authentically Spanish, from the white marble decor and napkins in dispensers, through to the loud buzz of happy diners and incredible moreish food smells. Open for lunch and dinner most days, try their Adelaide Street branch around the corner if things get too hectic."

"The Vintage Showroom, Covent Garden. The Vintage Showroom on Earlham Street is the business’s retail store (their Notting Hill space is by appointment only). Here you’ll find men’s clothes and accessories in mint condition, from American workwear, military and collegiate styles to classic English tailoring. It’s a deceptively large store with a basement space (formerly a hardware store since 1835), and totally unpretentious."

"Kastner and Ovens, Covent Garden. The lunch time queue is worth the wait at Kastner and Ovens. Pick up a box and fill it with fresh salads and hot food, and don’t forget a slice of cake on the way out. The vibe is home-cooked and its daily changing menu is updated on their Facebook page where you will see the huge variety there is to choose from."

"Bageriet, Covent Garden. This small, unassuming bakery hidden on Rose Street is a real treat, with traditional Swedish biscuits and cakes at the core of the offering. Owner and pastry chef Daniel Karlsson prepares everything daily on site in his basement kitchen, so freshness is guaranteed. There’s a few tables to sit down, but whether you stay in or take away, don’t miss the cinnamon buns or coconut pyramids."

"Balthazar, Covent Garden. Since opening in London in 2013, Balthazar has been consistently busy, much like its original counterpart in New York City. There’s takeaway coffee, sausage rolls, sandwiches, sweet pastries, baguettes and more, but if you can find a seat, it’s worth sitting in for the upmarket Parisienne vibe."

On the ground level you’ll find design led books, cool toys and stationery. In the basement level is an ever-changing exhibition space and a brilliant range of magazines, from international fashion favourites to more niche foodie essay collections."

"Aram, Covent Garden. For modern interior lovers, Aram’s multi-storey building is a must-visit destination. Over 50 years old, you'll find all the big names and classic designs there by Knoll, Vitra, Flos, Kartell, Fritz Hansen, Ercol and much more. Whilst many of the products are not in most people’s budgets, there’s still a good selection of cards and small gifts in the affordable range. It’s also worth heading up to the fourth floor exhibition space, which is used to showcase emerging designers, changing themes a few times a year."

The simple, delicious pizzas can be accompanied with a fine craft beer from their drinks list."

"26 Grains, Covent Garden. Tucked away in Neal’s Yard is 26 Grains, a cafe dedicated to providing grain dishes that make you feel virtuous. There’s traditional (yet fancy) takes on porridge, or the more unusual savoury varieties featuring carrot, kale and squash. They specialise in quality heritage-led American brands such as Levi’s, Penfield and Gant Rugger, and have a good range of military and workwear reproductions for a smart, retro style. Their shoe and accessories ranges are particularly worth checking out, stocking a wide variety of Red Wing boots, Ebbets Field Flannels caps, Stetson Caps and more."

"Lundenwic, Covent Garden. Everything about this newly opened cafe is appealing to those who are visually stimulated. The clean, calm and light interior, considered branding, and bright, fresh food and juices on display are all very Instagrammable. Sandwiches and salads change according to seasons, whilst the Little Bread Peddler pastries and Workshop coffees are always on the menu."

"Yama Momo, East Dulwich. This modern Japanese new style Izakaya/sushi restaurant and cocktail bar brings an edge to East Dulwich's repertoire of homely gastro pubs and wine bars. Both the food and restaurant interior are really nicely presented. Worth visiting for a special night out."

If you already live the rock star life and just want to sit back and relax you can just catch one of New River Studios many gigs and exhibitions. Still a bit burnt out from the world tour? How about a game of Street Fighter or one of their other vintage arcade games. If you can’t even handle that, go pet Bagel the cat. She is #famous on instagram. Like, totes #adorbs."

As name suggests, Season Kitchen are all about those seasonal ingredients: with a dash of Spring, a hint of Summer, a pinch of Autumn and some Winter essence, you’ll be satisfied whatever the weather. They also do this thing called no-extra-charge bread (even throwing in the recipe if you play your cards right) which is absolutely fine with us because what’s a diet when there’s free carbs? Plus, what better way to wash it all down than with one of their banging bottles of reasonably priced wines. We’ll toast to that."

"New Beacon Books, Finsbury Park. John La Rose and his wife Sarah White set up New Beacon Books to share the history and politics of Black Britain and Europe. Filled to the rafters with 35,000 books, they cover an impressive bit of history that shaped the area, the city and the nation. The shop is the first independent publisher for Caribbean and Black interest fiction and nonfiction. Spend an afternoon in this little treasure chest of vibrant books, postcards and retro TVs. Make sure to have a chat with Sarah, who runs the shop to this day."

"The Faltering Fullback, Finsbury Park. They say that alcohol is a downer, thankfully The Faltering Fallback has the perfect solution to this problem. It’s the pub that never stops going up, literally. The beer garden defies the laws of physics with its never ending staircases to heaven. If you do decide to stop climbing, you can sit inside and enjoy a nice bit of sport. That or bet on which beer sloshed drinker will fall down the stairs next."

"Mosey Homes, Finsbury Park. Known for their collection of fantastic vintage and mid-century furniture and homeware pieces, Mosey Homes is more than just a shop. They’re also a creative hub for workshops, talks, and generally a place to try something new. If your idea of being a home decor don is limited to throwing a cloth on a table and rolling Uncle Jerry off the settee to make way for your guests, then never fear - Mosey Home also offer interiors and styling consultancy."

"PAK, Finsbury Park. The undisputed king of Finsbury Park has to be PAK. Dominating Stroud Green Road with a small army of shops specialising in wigs, extensions, hair and beauty products, with all that synthetic weave if there was a great fire of Finsbury Park PAK would go up in flames the quickest. Never fear, they sell real hair too. Phew. Try PAK Cosmetics, it’s like a treasure chest of bath, beauty and hair products - on our last trip we bought peach hair dye, a snail serum face mask and a mud mask for your ears."

"The Finsbury, Finsbury Park. A classic pub with some of the comfiest sofas around. It’s a great place to take your mates for a round of drinks and “banter”. If you get sick of your compadres lame jokes then you’re in luck, The Finsbury has a roster of professional comedians on hand to sort them out. That or you can stare out the ever-so-large windows wondering why the hell you keep inviting Chad to these things."

"Front Room Café, Finsbury Park. How do you like your eggs in the morning? We like ‘em Front Room Café style. Honestly, the only way this place could be better is if they delivered straight to your bed. Living the dream, right? But until then it’s very much worth the legwork. With the exposed brickwork, wooden tables and OJ so fresh you’d think they press it in store (oh wait, they do!) it’s hard to beat."

"Chaps and Dames, Finsbury Park. Say goodbye to split ends and hello to sweet serenades. Chaps and Dames hairdressers sure know how to make that ‘wash, cut and blowdry’ experience all the more impressive. The staff here are super friendly and will have you chattering like you’ve known them for years – not to mention they’ll give you one snazzy haircut. You should also keep your eye on the piano in the window, you might just catch a glimpse of Paul the bossman having a tinkle on the keys (they don’t call him the singing barber for nothing)."

"Blighty Coffee, Finsbury Park. No speak Americano? Luckily, these guys do. They’ll even paint you like one of those French girls...well, not really, but they do paint unique rosettes into cups of what can only be described as liquid joy. Also, there was this one time that Ed the Barista had this epic moustache. It doesn’t affect the coffee whatsoever but we don’t like to let him forget it. I mean we did take photos of it and put it all over Instagram. Anyway, now that’s over, back to the coffee. It’s pretty damn good. Try it for yourself. It’ll help warm you up from the inside and get over the loss of the moustache. They also do wicked food, which you can either enjoy whilst sat admiring the wartime paraphernalia or from the comfort of the replica Air Raid Shelter in their back garden. Oh and they’re licensed, so you can get boozed up too. It’s all rather spiffing, isn’t it old boy!"

"Bubbledogs, Fitzrovia. The creation of chef James Knappett and his wife Sandia Chang, Bubbledogs is the catchy name that tells it how it is - an establishment of champagne and hot dogs. 30-odd champagnes in fact and a wide selection of dogs. A warm, industrial interior of bare brick and reclaimed fittings - though notably the copper topped bar is the central feature. More of a champagne bar than a restaurant, drop in for lunch or join the almost constant, but quick moving, evening queue."

"Fitzroy Square, Fitzrovia. One of London’s finest squares. Named after Charles Fitzroy, 4th Duke of Grafton, and designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century. An architectural gem, Fitzroy Square has been home to many famous artists, writers and statesmen over the years. Blue plaques mark the houses once occupied by Prime Minister Lord Salisbury and writers George Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolf."

"Honey & Co, Fitzrovia. Tucked away on the northern edge of Fitzrovia, a short walk from Warren Street tube, is the food lover’s favourite Honey & Co. This husband-and-wife run cafe/dining room which serves colourful salads, pastries, mezze and iced teas keeps the food at the heart of their experience. Word has spread pretty quick about this place, busy throughout the day (7am-7pm) so call ahead if you can, although if you’re prepared for a short wait, it’s well worth it."

"Rev. J W Simpson, Fitzrovia. A basement drinking den from the Bourne & Hollingsworth team, located in what used to be the home of an old clergyman until the late 80’s. In more recent years it was known as the Capricorn Club until raided by police under the suspicion of being a brothel. Through the mysterious black door and down the stairs you’ll enter a hidden gem of Fitzrovia, its interior is a mishmash of peeling wallpaper, tiled floors and battered wooden walls which, together, leave the clear impression of a space that has had many lives."

"Rivet & Hide, Fitzrovia. On the eastern edge of Fitzrovia, north of the mayhem of Oxford Street, sits a destination for anyone seeking a sanctuary of raw denim and unique apparel from small batch and specialist brands with an almost obsessive focus on quality. Built on a deep knowledge of Japanese denim and craftsmanship, Rivet and Hide stock exclusive brands and collaborative projects from artisan makers such as Iron Heart and Steel Feather as well as British brands Dawson Denim and Hiut Denim Co."

"Lewis Leathers, Fitzrovia. Established in 1892, Lewis Leathers (D. Lewis) began making protective clothing for the growing pursuits of Motoring, Flying and Motor Cycling. By the mid 20’s this grew to include purpose-built race suits for prominent TT racers of the day. 1950’s post-war Britain saw popularity increase with the rise of the teenage motorcyclist, a new breed whose style went hand in hand with their lifestyle. In the 60’s Lewis Leathers saw unprecedented growth as the products became immensely popular with the English Rockers. Then again, with the explosion of punk in ‘76, Lewis Leathers were worn by musicians like Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, Steve Jones and Joey Ramone. Today Lewis Leathers attracts motorcyclists and rock & rollers from all over the world who appreciate the quality and style achieved in over 100 years."

"The Social, Fitzrovia. An independent bar, music venue, small club and events space. A dying breed basically. The Social was set up with a simple manifesto – to provide great music and better booze to anyone who fancied tripping through the doors. 16 years later and still run by the original team who created it – Heavenly Recordings & The Breakfast Group – the bar is an award winning London institution. The Social pride themselves on innovative and interesting music programming working with people like Radio One’s Huw Stephens for the last ten years, their weekly Heavenly Social Friday night party and of course Thursdays are Hip Hop Karaoke. They also have other less conventional events like the Faber Social and Caught By The River literary events, and one-offs with promoters like In The Dark or the School of Noise."

"Pollock's Toy Museum, Fitzrovia. Steeped in history, this family run business, passed on through generations, is a glimpse into Victorian era toys and collectables. Set within two creaky, atmospheric Georgian town houses, this time-capsule collection includes an 1830’s rocking horse, Red Indian and Eskimo toys, magic lanterns, tanks and trains, Chinese pantomime dragons, a neighbourhood of dolls houses and paper theatres from all over the world. The museum is small and values its independence. It’s not trying to compete with the big institutions like the British Museum down the road. It’s a different, offbeat kind of place appealing to a different kind of sensibility."

"Regent Street Cinema, Fitzrovia. Built in 1848, Regent Street Cinema was the first in the country to show moving pictures. In 1896, the cinema showcased the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe to a paying audience, and, as the curtain fell, British cinema was born. Re-opened by the University of Westminster in May 2015, reinstating one of the most historic cinemas in Britain to its former grandeur. The cinema offers exclusive premieres, repertory screenings, retrospectives, documentaries, animation and experimental cinema. You can also catch double bills, showcasing the best of home-grown British talent, world cinema and classic movies in this classic venue."

"Picture, Fitzrovia. Halfway up Great Portland Street at 110, a short walk from Oxford Circus, is modern British-European restaurant, Picture. An independent, neighbourhood favourite within a compact, modern space. The inviting bar is a good spot to grab a locally distilled gin before enjoying an a-la-carte menu of small sharing plates of ingredient-led British fare."

"Wellcome Collection, Fitzrovia. Wellcome Collection is a destination for the incurably curious. Located on the north edge of Fitzrovia, 183 Euston Road, it explores the connections between medicine, life and art in the past, present and future. The venue offers visitors contemporary and historic exhibitions and collections, lively public events, the world-renowned Wellcome Library, a café, a shop and a restaurant as well as publications, tours, a book prize, international and digital projects."

"Oslo, Hackney Central. Acoustically excellent, this venue is a bar and restaurant with a live music room upstairs. Great beers on draught and a decent menu — it's good for weekend afternoon hangs, Friday night fun and for gigs on pretty much any night of the week (check their events schedule to see what's coming up). Hackney has a lot of history, but this new-ish venue is super cool and a great addition to the neighbourhood."

"Pavillion Bakery, Hackney Central. Victoria Park's Pavillion Café is so good, they opened a bakery shop a mile up the road to cater for Hackney's sourdough and delicious croissant needs. With a wide range of breads and pastries, they're super popular so be warned — they close early when they run out of bread. From the guys who also brought us Elliot's in Borough Market. Need we say more?"

"Hackney Empire, Hackney Central. Built in 1901 as a grand music hall, the Hackney Empire is a brilliant theatre, restored to it's former grandeur, and the best place to see pantomimes. With a diverse programme throughout the year, with plenty of plays and comedy shows, there is always something on to take friends or family to."

"Hackney Picturehouse, Hackney Central. Part of Cineworld's Picturehouse chain, the Hackney venue is right at the top of Mare Street and serves food and drink to enjoy before you take your seats to watch blockbuster and arthouse releases. As far as regular seats go for cinemas, these are particularly comfy and you can still stuff your face with popcorn if you didn't do brunch before the matinee."

"2 Willow Road, Hampstead Heath. Erno Goldfinger designed this magnificent Modernist home for him and his family in 1939, which has been beautifully preserved along with his belongings, furniture - much of it designed by himself - and collection of modern art including pieces by Henry Moore, Max Ernst and Bridget Riley. Wonderful architectural details appear throughout like the paint colours chosen to highlight different materials, the beautiful spiral staircase and the wooden partition wall that can be folded away to create a large communal area for social occasions. Unlike us, writer and Hampstead resident Ian Fleming apparently wasn’t a fan and is said to have taken inspiration from Goldfinger’s surname for his James Bond villain."

"Southampton Arms, Hampstead Heath. The owners of this very wonderful establishment have done an amazing job of creating a fantastic local pub that attracts an eclectic mix of both original regulars from its former guise and new visitors. All the ales and ciders stocked here (18 handpulls in total) are from small independent UK breweries. You can accompany your pint with a choice of tasty meats, we recommend the warm pork bap with apple sauce. Vinyl is played from behind the bar, with excellent live music provided on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday nights. Quiz night is Monday and take note, it’s a cash only bar."

"Harrington & Squires, Hampstead Heath. Based in a tiny sliver of a building 1.2 metres wide called The Corridor, Chrissie Charlton & Vicky Fullick run their small design and bespoke letterpress printing business. Here you can buy printed designs, commission a piece or take part in a one day letterpress workshop. Drawers full of an endless variety of type and blocks could keep you busy for days."

"Larusi, Hampstead Heath. Souad Larusi has been sourcing beautiful, quality vintage rugs and textiles from Morocco for the last 15 years and is the go-to person for the perfect piece for many designers, stylists and private clients. Her studio in Kentish Town, where the rugs can be viewed by appointment only, is bursting with wonderful textures and colours, along with her newer range of luxurious linen bedding. "del Parc, Hampstead Heath. Food lovers travel far to visit Steve Morrish and Alan McNally’s North African inspired Tapas restaurant and to indulge in the mouthwatering tasting plates. Rather than making your own selection from the menu, diners are asked if they have any food allergies before being presented with plate after plate of delicious dishes. A small no-bookings bar area by the window is a new addition to the restaurant, seating 6-8 people for regular menu orders."

"The Pineapple, Hampstead Heath. A real neighbourhood institution rescued by the locals when it was threatened with redevelopment over a decade ago. The pineapple fruit - so I was told by a regular when I was last in there - is a symbol of welcome, and there’s plenty of both here. This popular local has a fantastic 19th century interior with a conservatory out the back and a great deal of charm."

"Kristin Baybars, Hampstead Heath. Upon arrival you may think Kristen’s shop is closed as the window grates never come down, but look out for the light on and knock on the door. Once invited in, you’ll step back in time and discover the most magical Aladdin’s Cave of doll’s house furniture, toys, board games, marbles, collectables, kites, miniatures and automata. Though be aware, it’s cash only. Kristin is an incredibly friendly soul if you’re considerate of her collection and has some really fascinating stories to tell. Just make sure you close the door quietly!"

"The Bull & Last, Hampstead Heath. Just across the road from the Heath you’ll find this wonderful pub and restaurant serving sensational food in a cosy wood panelled interior. Dogs are allowed in the downstairs bar which is good news for dog walkers heading from the Heath, while upstairs dining is a little more formal. Booking is recommended although a row of small tables and stools near the bar are left unreserved for walk-ins. On warm days the bench tables outside offer a great drinking spot in the sunshine."

"Lure, Hampstead Heath. Tucked away in the residential area near the Heath known as Dartmouth Park Village is this very special fish kitchen. Reasonably new to the area, Lure offers a modern take on the traditional fish and chip shop and a decor that transports you to the seaside. Only fresh, sustainable, seasonal fish is used, provided by day boat fishermen & responsible fish farms from in and around the UK. There are weekly specials and the batter is made with locally brewed Camden Hells’ beer."

"Ladies & Gentlemen, Hampstead Heath. Launched in January of this year after extensive renovation, this cosy cocktail bar was once a Victorian lavatory. Owner William Borrell is the craft spirit producer of Vestal Vodka and Highwayman Gin which is produced on site using a 16 litre copper still. Wonderful seasonal cocktails are created by friendly barmen using ingredients sourced from Hampstead Heath allotments to produce homemade liqueurs, syrups and herbs. There’s live music on Thursdays- Saturdays but arrive early to be sure to get in."

"Patron - Cave à Manger, Hampstead Heath. With a stunning marble-topped bar, beautiful decor and just the right lighting, Patron is the perfect French wine bar serving delicious seasonal food alongside fantastic signature dishes like duck confit and ongolet steak. Bookings aren’t taken at the bar so it’s possible to get a seat at short notice and it’s also a great spot for a cocktail or glass of wine. Owners Jean-Francois and Tanzi have created a little oasis on this unlikely stretch of road which is definitely worth a visit."

"The Junction Tavern, Hampstead Heath. A fantastic pub and dining room with original Victorian woodwork interior, fireplace and bar dating from 1885. Because of the different areas inside as well as a conservatory and beer garden, The Junction is both a cosy, informal pub and a classy restaurant. They offer a changing seasonal menu of incredibly delicious food, served by the friendliest of people."

"Shoe Shop, Hampstead Heath. Understated with wonderful copper detailing, this former shoe shop is very much a local restaurant, serving really outstanding food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Opened last year by an Australian couple who prefer to keep a low profile, it’s become a very welcome addition to the area and eating here somehow feels like you’re being let in on something really special."

"Ruby Violet, Hampstead Heath. Julie Fisher named her ice cream parlour after her grandmother who loved a choc ice.
