A friend of mine rented this for a wedding recently and the experience was horrible. If you ask a question they have a nasty attitude. The basement venue is humid and smells a lot like mold. They try to their hardest to deny you the return of deposit trying to blame you for things that were already broken or scratched Money hungry management.

It's advisable not to engage in any business with this establishment. The security personnel were negligent, impolite, and there were reports of money theft. Please avoid leaving your belongings unattended where security has access; the overall experience was unpleasant.

Great place to throw an event. Beautiful decor...plenty of space. Loved the bar tucked in the corner. Our family had a great night. Would def recommend to friends looking for a classy place to host a party. They made us check our coats tho which i didnt appreciate.

Google
This venue is very spacious. My downer was the coat check where security insisted I had to check my little leather jacket. Then the coat check personnel asked me to pay $2 for a service I didn't need or wanted. To me this should be a service that tips could be provided but not a charge

This place is the worst the top floor is 200 chairs and there is no place for storage if you don’t need all 200 chairs and tables. The Spanish girl who work in the office is a lair. And Ceaser is the so called manager but unprofessional. $3000 not worth it. Would never recommend ever to anyone. It is a decent size but over crowded with chairs and table and no where to store them. The fridge in the bar need to be replaced. Very dark and no one steady light color. Not modern. You pay for the place and they have rectangular tables and round tables too much going on. You should be able to pick and choose what you want.

Google
Absurd policy of no coats in the ballroom. Not to mention the irrational $2 charging fee for EACH coat. Medium space for around 100 people in the "Upper Hall" Very good security to say the most. Some of them even like to dance along and are very personable.

Yelp
very nice there upgraded here over the years . it's been in the Flatbush section of brooklyn for years. My cousin had her wedding reception here back in 1997 . it's pretty decent very similar to other Brooklyn catering halls like "Grand Prospect Hall" or "Glenn Terrace". i wouldn't mind coming back here with there beautiful chandlers ! very convenient by the mta transportation: Subway: 2,5 -Train , Church avenue Bus: B41,B35, B49,B12 (walking distance on bedford avenue & Clarkson avenue)

Yelp
I can not express enough my disappointment in the egregious and unethical manner in which you abruptly cancelled a Memorial scheduled weeks in advance at your banquet hall. September 27th my Memorial was scheduled with invited guest and invitations made and sent out weeks in advance. However on the night of the 26th I was contacted and was told some dubious claims of the local police precinct suddenly imposed a new health directive that banquet halls must temporarily effective immediately. I was told that I would be given paperwork to prove such claim. However, it was nothing more than  morally egregious lie and disservice. The symbolic proprietary gesture of returning my money  do not absolve you of the daily responsibility of doing business in a fair and equitable manner. I literally was afforded no opportunity to find another venue and or make arrangments overnight. Losing a love one was unbeatable, yet this experience of not given the opportunity to grief and bring closure among a small group of family and loved ones adds further sorrow during this time. I  could not remain silent on this matter. My silence would have  been conceived as  endorsement to your complicity of this plausible deniability.

Yelp
Basic wedding factory place. Attended a reception here. First off, didn't like how they had bouncers at each entrance, treating this place like a club. The party hadn't started yet when we arrived and we were told we couldn't hang around in the lobby. So we left to get food and came back the next hour. Decor was simple, that 80s over-decoration that's non inspiring. I'm sure a good interior designer could transform the room with some nice draping. They had a lot of space to work with. Good hardwood floors. You could easily have more than 200 guests at an event. The sound system was also good. Tables and chairs were wobbly though. Overall, I didn't have a good experience here.

Yelp
I had my wedding reception here back in 2011 and tried to write a review back then but it wasn't on Yelp's list at the time. Now that it is, I would like to warn you about management. The person who managed the hall at the time was not straightforward with my husband and I when we first booked the 1st floor of Afrika House. When we came on the month of our wedding to pay the last installment, she gave us a list of rules. The rules listed things that we could do and not do such as decorate walls or set the table with lit candles. I was frustrated because I had bought candles and decorations. I felt like this is something that she should have mentioned at our first meeting. On top of that, she added a charge of $150 because we were going to have a band. When we had mentioned at our first meeting about the band, she never mentioned this charge. We had even showed her the signed contract but she said that the extra charge was to cover the electricity. On the day of my wedding, she wouldn't let the band in unless we paid even though that was not in our contract. Then to make me more stressed out, she wouldn't let the liquor in because she said it wasn't allowed even though the salon had a bar area. She claimed that liquor would make my guests rowdy and cause a fight to erupt. She would only permit beer. My father and I had to promise her that there wouldn't be a fight or else she would stop the party . I was desperate because there was only an hour left before the party started. I would have rated a one but after some time has passed, my anger has simmered. I also have watched my wedding video numerous times and I've realized that I really had a good time. The place was also beautiful and big. We had 200 guests and it could have fit up to 400 people. The staff members were also nice and very helpful. We had the first floor rented, which was $2,100 at the time. That was not bad compared to other reception halls, especially since we had it for 9 hours. It has been four years since my wedding and I've heard that this place has been renovated so it might be nicer. I just hope management has also improved.

Yelp
I am in Brooklyn, not CA. After all these years of taking black & Caribbean patron's money this place has not cared to invest in renovating the bathrooms or the upper level hall. I attended an Old Year's Day/New Year's Eve dance this year after not going there for about 3 years. The bottom level dance hall was renovated but the bathrooms are still small, old, cold, devoid of hot water, antiquated and nonfunctional toilet that always back up. Invest the $20-30K and renovate the women's bathrooms!!! Women are all dressed up and have to deal with disgusting bathrooms. Remove one stall and make two large and modern sized stalls that can comfortable fit women who are above a size 2 (Yes, the majority of women . . . particularly black women). Your lack of care is insulting. You should be ashamed. The upstairs totally needs to be renovated. The windows don't open. It's a firetrap. I don't understand how the fire department has not cited the owners for this. The bathroom designated for the upper level is only accessible via narrow stairs. Many older people attend events here. This is another safety issue. It is also an ADA issue. And when many people are dancing on the floor it feels as if it is going to give away. Shame on you!!!

Yelp
I wish I could give this venue 0 stars. Do not book anything at this establishment. They are unprofessional, scammers and hostile. If it wasn't for Spencer (one of the security and maintenance employees), my experience would have been way worse. Thank you Spencer for being kind. Back to my review, DO NOT use Afrika house! They only deal in cash and checks (which leads me to think they are not properly reporting for tax purposes). They also make up prices for additional hours if the consumer is in great need of it. They are not accommodating at all! The place is old, smells old, they do not provide anything other then the space and ice. They charge for coat check. I had my wedding reception here and honestly, if it wasn't for close friends and family, I would have had a terrible wedding. Afrika house is a great disappointment. The employees pretend that they do not understand you. They lie to your face and create mental anguish. Save yourself and DO NOT use this place for anything!!!

Yelp
Quite a difference from years ago. They've done some refurbishments, but with the low ceiling and basement-level venue, it does get awfully hot.

Yelp
Make sure you make a video or take pictures before you leave the establishment at the end of your party or event, they will try to keep your deposit by finding fault or creating it. The charged for ice, you can't bring to much alcohol, you cannot put too much decorations, only give you two hour for practice and charged for it. You only have two hours for decorating the hall, and the is two hours before your event.

Yelp
I'd written a review preciously and somehow its gone, never mind that. I am so disgusted with this place that i'll continue to write the same review. DO NOT come to this place, the employees are obviously not into the service industry. Julia, while nice and friendly in the beginning, quickly turns around on you and becomes very rude and authoritative. Any small request is met with either a no or a its not in the contract. Yet they find it appropriate to go to the buffet and serve themselves a liberal amount of food. They even broke the choreographer's equipment! In front of everyone, and openly threatened to shut down the party over a simple magic trick. I have worked in many, and i mean over 30 different halls, this is by far the worst one of them all.

Yelp
Africa house is a lovely place to have an event but some security's have a nasty attitude. They charge about 3-5 dollars just to hang your coat or other things you have carried with you. Overall I would rate this place one star since when I came here they gave me a hard time, if the security get paid then why are they being paid more for hanging your coat?!?
