Hennessy and Anti-Smash Burgers Reign Supreme at After Ours by chef Richard Le | Eater Portland

"Portland’s first chef-driven vinyl bar opens August 7 as a moody, low-lit hangout to put your feet up, listen to records, and eat, from chef Richard Le (Mémoire Cà Phê), Kim Dam (Mémoire/Portland Cà Phê), and Mikey Nguyen (Index), with record-lined walls nodding to Madlib’s Lord Quas and Lauryn Hill’s Unplugged. The all-day menu pulls hits from Le’s cart Matta—salt and pepper squid, garlic noodles, fried rice, chicken and catfish sandwiches, and burgers topped with egg—plus a dinner lineup paired to inventive drinks by Ketsuda “Nan” Chaison (Norah, Libre). Brunch brings California-style breakfast burritos and avocado toast done up like a banh mi, and the sharing-style format channels the trio’s homes—plate after plate of duck liver and fried and grilled meats meant for snacking with Heineken and glugs of Hennessy. Standouts include the tavern burger, an anti-smash 4.5-ounce patty pressed but not flattened for crust and juiciness, the beef marinated in fish sauce for hours and stacked with American cheese (the “king of cheese,” per Le) and a house “seksy sauce” riffed from Vietnamese staples (“Everyone and their mom is doing a smash burger… I don’t want a crispy piece of paper,” Le says). Late-night, the Hanoi-style pho lands the plane with thicker rice noodles and a fattier, heartier broth—chicken or beef—served simply with maybe scallions and cilantro, a charred lime wedge, fish sauces, and chiles. The bar leans into Nguyen’s devotion to cognac with the Saigon Old Fashioned (Hennessy in place of rye or bourbon), alongside salted lime gin and tonics and lychee martinis. Open 9 a.m.–10 p.m. Sunday–Wednesday and 9 a.m.–2 a.m. Thursday–Saturday." - Paolo Bicchieri

Google
Stopped by this morning to try the brunch noods and bahn mi. The atmosphere is quite nice! Beautiful bar. The space is airy and grand. The food was flavorful, and I would get the noods again. Service was attentive and real.

I've been looking forward to visiting this place since they opened!! My husband and I came for the first time tonight around 10pm and it was busy but we did not have to wait long at all to get a table and put our order in. The service and good are wonderful, as well as the music and atmosphere! I highly recommend visiting this place especially if you're night owls like us. We’ll definitely be here again. 🍜🥂 I got the beef pho and he got a burger and we both got Margaritas !

Isabella C.

Google
We've had the pho (served at 10p.) and Garlic Noodles (served 3p. Until close, I think). Both items were good but not 'to die for.' However, their cocktails are amazing a little pricey but delicious! According to one of the owners, to make a reservation, email them at info @afterours.pdx The atmosphere is a 5/5! Friends have said After Ours is the most diverse lounge/bar they've ever visited. I highly recommend going around 7p to grab a table.

Google
Vibes were great! The place was packed, so finding a table took a bit, but that’s the norm at a popular spot. Drinks were solid, and most dishes are perfect for sharing. A fun place to kick off the night with a small group of friends.

Google
We tried three drinks: the margarita, yuzu oolong whiskey sour, and the da nang lychee rum martini thing. Only the margarita was good. Our bartender lady was also really nice. The place was pretty too. But it kinda had an air of pretentiousness. I don't think I'd go back. Maybe I'm not cool enough, lmao.

Xenia R.

Google
I had the Pandan Colada - absolutely delicious, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. Definitely a 10/10 for me! For food, I tried the Garlic Noodles with Mushrooms. The flavor was great and the mushrooms were cooked perfectly, though the noodles were a bit on the dry side. Overall, still an enjoyable dish and worth trying. Great vibes, friendly service, and creative menu items. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
Apparently, there's another "Kevin Huynh" tossing shade at After Ours, and now my phone's blowing up asking why I'm hating on a place I actually love. That wasn't me. Not this Kevin Huynh. Portland needed a late-night spot with legit Vietnamese food, and After Ours delivered. Great drinks (even if I stick to Henny on the rocks), great staff, great vibe. Treat people with respect, you'll get it back. Bottom line: if you haven't been yet, go. Amazing food, amazing drinks, amazing people. - Kevin Huynh

Google
WOW!! Been dying to try this place out and so happy I got the chance to do so. I went with my Date and our friend on a Monday and it was fairly packed but luckily we were able to find a spot at the bar. Immediately we were greeted by the staff working and they were extremely friendly to us all. They answered all the questions we had about the drinks and always made sure we were taken care of. We got hungry and decided to try some food and let me tell you NOTHING disappointed. The fish sandwich was mine and it was delicious but the star was definitely the pickles. I’m a huge pickle person and theirs are so freaking good!! I had a bite of my dates chicken sandwich and it also was really tasty. The fries were good but that spicy ketchup…. The spicy ketchup is PHENOMENAL!!! And absolute must try. Oh and the drinks, my date had the lychee tini which she loved and I had the Henny tini which was basically an espresso martini with Hennessy and if I’m honest, if it wasn’t for work I would’ve easily ordered another 3 haha. Overall the food, the drinks, and the experience was top notch and I can’t wait to go back for more!!

Yelp
The food is great! The chicken wings are amazing, the fries addicting, the garlic noodles fantastic. I love the ambiance- a nice space. People looked better than the usual Portland crowd- attractive and well dressed.

Yelp
Came here before a concert and the overall aesthetic and ambience of the bar was really nice. We didn't try the food. Just got a couple drinks and it was pretty good service was pretty attentive. Overall just chill place to come hangout.

Yelp
It has a very hip and comfortable layout, but that's the only good thing I can say about this place. My steak was the worst I have had in years and the shrimp was just ok. One of my friends got food poisoning from his catfish sandwich and another from the shrimp po' boy sandwich! The service was lackluster. We weren't their demographic and they couldn't care less. I tried to order Pho and was told they only serve it late at night on the weekends and that it was posted on the menu. The bar keeper said it with more attitude than I expected, like it was my fault for not paying attention.

Yelp
Great new neighborhood establishment. Excellent build out, good vibes, good drinks, and staff was very welcoming. They also have a line up of great music, DJ's, and entertainment. Great addition to the neighborhood, and add's some new energy. Don't miss out.

Yelp
I came here again, but this time for an earlier dinner around 6 pm on a Saturday. There were quite a few groups there enjoying their dinners, and others grabbing drinks to chat over. The darker lighting created a more intimate vibe. The restaurant was already busy, and seating was filling up fast. Luckily, I was flying solo that night and grabbed a seat at the bar. I ended up ordering a mushroom sandwich with a side of fries. I should have ordered a drink, but I was content with water for that night. For the sandwich, I with the mushrooms was a little less battered as I feel like the mushroom taste got a little lost. However, it was quite filling, and the sauce and pickles did well to add flavor and cut through the fried taste. The mushrooms themselves were tender and not overcooked. The fries could have used a bit more furikake to add flavor. I personally think that they could be a bit crispier on the outside, although if you aren't as into crispy fries, then they were pretty good. The sides for the fries were flavorful and helped to make up for the lack of Furikake. The staff were lovely and very helpful. Despite the large number of people, they were helpful and quite personable.

Yelp
Was very excited to try this place out, especially being of Vietnamese descent, having a place serve Vietnamese cuisine and the ambiance seemed like the perfect match. The decor was very sleek and there was a DJ playing live music while we were dining. Definitely created a fun environment that I thought was unique. The drinks were very good! The yuzu oolong whiskey sour had the flavors of yuzu but wasn't too strong to taste. The pandan colada was on the sweeter side for my liking, but it was still a solid drink. The food is where I become a big critic, since I grew up eating this cuisine. I thought the bot chien could be fried a bit longer to give it that crispiness, but the larger cubes made it unique to what I'm used to. The breakfast burrito and banh mi were mediocre; flavors were decent but how it was prepared made the tortilla/bread soggy. If you didn't inhale the food, it turned mushy. The pho broth was a bit sweeter for my preference but the noodles and beef balls were anything to write home about. The breakfast noods was probably my favorite dish there. The noodles were bouncy and it looked simple but had so many layers of flavor to it. I wouldn't mind going back, as the experience as a whole was positive, but it wouldn't be something I recommend/crave to go back on my own.

Yelp
As the name states, or how one can interpret, this is "The After Hours Spot" which really is "OUR" spot, meaning a place that makes you feel like it's "your spot". They played host to about 20-30 guests after a special gala event I participated in so I felt like I rolled in deep with my crew, and it was great. Our vibe mixed with other groups of people celebrating birthdays or just starting the night off made it a great mix. The DJ was on point... some great music throughout and no matter the age of the crowd, they connected us all. Only downside was it seemed like there were some limitations at the bar as far as specific bottle availability... I was shocked when they didn't carry 2 types of liquor that were requested by my crew. Either they were out, or didn't carry. We just pivoted as that didn't stop us from celebrating the night. They've got plenty of tables inside so even during the late-night hours, you could grab a seat. Limited view of people watching, but still cool. When you come, consider this to be standing room with a cocktail on-hand towards the latter part of the night. Next time I'll make a trip and try the food, as that was a part of most conversations that night.

Yelp
Vibes here are not great, which is super sad! The vibes actually border on rancid in my opinion. It feels like I crashed a party full of people who already know each other and I'm left on the fringes to observe. I want to like this place but every time I go almost the entirety of the tables are reserved which means there isn't much space available to sit. Figuring out where to order is confusing on a busy night but once you make your way to the front of the bar, the server promptly took my drink order. My drink was fine, way too sweet. I got the Pandan Colada. Won't be back unless they fix the energy in there.

Yelp
After ours is an awesome small town original portland vibe spot that I highly recommend. During the weekends they can be extremely busy but the bartenders are quick and very friendly. Drinks are delicious. I never thought I'd use Hennessy for an old fashioned but here we are. Food is extremely solid, especially for being a bar. Go check them out!

Yelp
First off , my cheeseburger was kinda off tasting . I didn't like the sauce too much . My Manhattan cocktail was a version of the house . Very good . That Saturday night was getting crowded , and seating was very limited . Very limited . A much younger crowd dressed better than casual in some instances . Vibes can be seen as "offish" . But I got over it . I came . I saw . And I left . Not much else to say .

Yelp
This is such a great new spot! I've been twice now (one during the weekday early afternoon and once Sunday night), and I've gotten both the breakfast noodles and garlic noodles and both (while super similar) are so good! The Pandan colada (a piña colada with Pandan floated on top) was also really good. I haven't been while someone is spinning vinyl, but it's still a little vibe. The space is small but subtly and nicely decorated. A cute new neighborhood spot.

Yelp
I was super hyped to try this new spot I got to try two different drinks and I thought they were pretty good. Would be up to returning to trying some other drinks. Will say that I got to try the fries and the noodles they have. Thought the food was just ok. Was a little disappointed that there wasn't a lot of Vietnamese food options for the dinner menu. The service was good and I liked the set up of the bar, it was self sit. Order at the bar.

Yelp
You MUST go here. Do not skip the garlic noodles. I have found my new favorite local bar & food. The creative food, fantastic cocktails, and asian flare create something wholly unique in the neighborhood. The vibes are incredible with walls lined by vinyl and great music on at all times. Shout out to the staff for an excellent experience with fast service.

Yelp
Food - 4 stars. Vibes - 1 star. Food was pretty good but the horrific attitudes were not worth coming. Really was looking forward to having this spot in the neighborhood but the bartenders attitude really ruined the experience. Also hate ordering at the bar and cramming in between people who are sitting trying to eat then trying to stalk people leaving to get a table.

Yelp
Four stars for ownership!!! Four stars for vibe!!! Opening weekend was crazy busy!! Unfortunately bar was overwhelmed and very tough to order drinks but will definitely be back to try full service and menu once up to speed? DJ was rocking the vinyls and total vibe!! Overall entertaining fun and definitely will be back!!

Yelp
I was very excited to try this new spot, the concept sounds so fun. However, I don't think the execution really happened, which is disappointing. This is supposed to be a Vietnamese vinyl bar, but there weren't any vinyls playing. I saw vinyls on the wall, and a huge chunk of space dedicated to vinyl playing, with nothing spinning. I also felt really bad for the bartenders, because they were working really hard just to keep up with drink orders with zero organization. I ordered the garlic noodles with braised beef. It was good, but it was extremely greasy. Maybe they were going for a more indulgent vibe, but it was too much for me. The chicken sandwich was okay. Fries had a good texture. The food and drinks didn't feel worth the price. They just opened, so I hope they can reorganize a little and fulfill the concept because it does seem like a cool idea.

Yelp
The ambiance was really nice, the vibe of the place was very chill and the music was great, but what I really wanted to review was the amazing food! We got the garlic noodles, the calamari, and the chicken sandwich. The garlic noodles were absolutely insane, would order literally twice in the same night type of food. The chicken sandwich was good too. The calamari came with this incredible sauce that literally stole the spotlight. It was the perfect amount of spice, and paired very well with the calamari and the sandwich! For drinks, we ordered the Yuzu Oolong Whiskey Sour, Sài Gòn Old Fashioned, Pandan Colada, and a Sapporo. I am a huge fan of whiskey sours, and this one did not disappoint. It was perfectly sour and sweet, and if I didn't want to try other drinks, I would have just had that the rest of the night. Bf was a fan of their take on the Old Fashioned, and the pandan colada was also delicious! Bar service was also great, they were super sweet! Would recommend this place for sure.

Yelp
Stopped in during their soft opening and was pleasantly surprised. The cocktails were brilliant and the garlic noodles were fantastic! We stationed ourselves at the bar and the service was great. Ambiance was a vinyl bar feel but no dj that night. Lights could have been dimmer but overall we had a nice time and would definitely return!

Steve W.

Yelp
Very disappointing. No Vietnamese food until "late night". My catfish sandwich was soggy and the fries were very salty. My drink tasted overly bitter. I was with a group and I didn't pick the place. The service was perfunctory...at best. They were Johnny-on-the-spot with the bill though. I felt like we got the bum's rush outta there because they didn't want us (older guys) polluting their Portland-Monthly-approved hipster vibe. Since it's a fair distance from where I live, I don't think I'll ever be back. Given the shelf life of a hipster bar in Portland, It'll probably be LONG gone (2 or 3 times over) before I get back to Sullivan's Gulch again. UPDATE: The next morning... After a pretty rough night... I am DOUBLE-PLUS NEVER going back to After Ours. I was up until 2:30am squirting the entire contents of my bowels into the toilet (and my clothes). My stomach was also audibly churning and rumbling. The only thing substantial I had to eat yesterday was that soggy catfish sandwich & those salty fries. ZERO STARS IF I COULD.

Yelp
Crowded and noisy beyond belief, their novel but ultimately mediocre drinks aren't worth the trouble

Yelp
I came in with a group of friends and ordered at the bar at 9:27pm, but the service was terrible. The bartender immediately told us with attitude that we were "lucky" and had "3 minutes." It was opening weekend and we were excited to try their drinks, so we ordered one of almost every drink on their menu, to which he looked away while rolling his eyes and then started to make the drinks. We were also never given water while every table around us had water served to them. They do have unique drinks and the interior is nice, but the service really shocked us and ruined the experience, especially during grand opening weekend! We will not be back.

Yelp
The food is good but the service is terrible. Bartender will not even acknowledge your presence when you walk up to the bar. It felt hostile and dismissive, not how you want to feel when going out patronizing a place of business! I went in a group of 4 and we all got our food and drink at wildly different times. It's a shame because the food is very decent but the service just ruins it. People remember how you made them feel. Also, my Pandan Colada did not look like any of my friend's.
google avatar

Yelp
Order drinks and food at the bar even though staff not busy. Food mediocre- noodles dry no depth of flavor or umami. Menu very limited. Space felt cold.
google avatar

Yelp
Our bartender was amazing, super knowledgeable when it came to the menu too. The vibe was chill, and the music was great (2000's R&B).

Yelp
Went here with a group of 5 on opening weekend to support. When we went to order drinks, the bartender was really rude and gave us attitude for ordering close to last call when we ordered at 9:27pm. We tried 6 of 7 drinks and they were all decent except the margarita had too much fish sauce and I like fish sauce. Pandan colada was yummy tho. At 9:40pm we saw another worker walk to every table to kindly let everyone know it was last call for drinks except for ours. We also noticed every table had jugs of water except for ours. We were never greeted and did not feel welcome the whole time. The service really left a sour taste and we will not be coming back.

Audrey N.

Yelp
the best drinks i've had by far! love their happy hour and late night foods... favorite drink might be their version of the lychee martini .. could drink this from a hose

Yelp
Fantastic new spot on Broadway! Awesome energy and vibe, along with great food. Welcome to the neighborhood! Chicken wings and french fries were exceptional. We live in the area and will definitely be coming back often.

S I.

Yelp
Went for dinner and drinks around 8pm on a Friday. Fast service, short wait. Food was fantastic, drinks were a cut above, as the night goes on it will get louder and more crowded, but that's the idea in a vinyl bar :).
google avatar

Ellise P.

Yelp
Shit service. Food and ambiance were good. Like to give opening places time to get their bearings but the service was shit. 4 people behind the bar not communicating with anyone about taking orders. I asked if I could order at one point and was looked at and completely avoided.
google avatar

Yelp
Good vibe, good music, and the food is great too! Even on a packed night the food came out quickly and we didn't have to wait too long on drinks. The cocktails are creative and well made. Will definitely be back

Meryl L.

Yelp
If this survives a year (Aug 2026), I will be very surprised. I predict March. I walked in on a Sunday about 3:30 PM. One table had a couple, and the bar had a couple. I was completely ignored. I perused the menu at the front for about three minutes. The two or maybe three people working there ignored me the entire time. Never even glanced at me! I want specifically for the pho. The "Viet menu" is closed until 5. Considering that this is one of their claims to fame, this was very disappointing. The only menu available was traditional bar food. If I am going to have traditional bar food, I am going five doors down to Steeplejack (which I did do!). They have an excellent cheeseburger and shoestring fries and beers and awesome service. They make me feel wanted. This place made me feel like I was intruding on some clique. I am not sure I will even try it again. After reading the other reviews, I think that this place will go the way of the skyline burger that was here for a while. That had the same dismal service and it met an early demise. UPDATE: The next day I tried again, after 6. I REALLY want that pho! Alas, it was not to be. Only on certain days at certain times. Gah! At least my presence was acknowledged this time! No more. Steeplejack is half a block along, and consistent.

Chelsae J.

Yelp
Wanted to come here for a while now, loved the vibe and the drinks were good but the food made me feel awful and I felt extremely sick after for about 6 hours now and the food was very greasy the bottom my the bowl of my garlic noodles I needed to use about 8 paper towels to soak up the oil.

Amy T.

Yelp
Heard all the hype but was severely disappointed. The music was just okay, nothing memorable. Trying to get a drink at the bar was a nightmare, we waited around 40 minutes without even being acknowledged by staff. On top of that, it was so overcrowded that it completely killed the vibe and made the night more frustrating than fun.

Lena H.

Yelp
I had so much hope for this place. I gave it two solid tries. The first time I got a bahn me- pretty simple right? But they added scrambled egg and it had a weird taste. Second time I had a bowl of pho- which for a viet restaurant should also be pretty simple- I had to send it back because the broth was sooooo salty. It didn't taste like pho broth at all. No flavor and it also had a weird taste because they are trying to do strange things with different spices. Honestly, if you're going to open a restaurant then the taste of food and hospitality has to be at the forefront. I would recommend getting a new chef with better recipes. Something as simple as a bahn me and pho could really be a staple in this neighborhood! I might try again in 6 months and see if they have improved the food.

Bill N.

Yelp
The reviews of this place are pretty accurate. The service almost makes it not worth checking out. There could be 20+ people at the bar and the bartenders are moving with zero urgency and look annoyed to be serving you.

Kevin H.

Yelp
Ordered at the bar at 9:27pm. The bartender, with attitude, told us we were "lucky" and had "3 minutes," then rolled his eyes when we ordered nearly every drink on the menu. Unlike other tables, we weren't offered water. The space is stylish and the drinks are creative, but the rude service completely soured the experience. We won't be returning.

Roberta S.

Yelp
My friends and I were excited to try this spot but unfortunately service was not good. There was a line at the bar when we got there which we waited in for 20 mins with no greeting or check in from anyone working there. The owner ended up yelling "I have two bartenders, don't wait in line!" at everyone in line but like, it's Portland, everybody loves lines. She could have told people as they were walking in or the bartenders could have also directed people? The very small sign saying "seat yourself, order at the bar" is not helpful so they should probably try simply telling patrons what to do as they walk in instead of getting frustrated and screaming at everyone. It's actually comical in the end. It seems like they are trying to apply their coffee shop model to a bar/ restaurant which is just not going to work. I felt bad for the bartenders who were taking all orders and making the drinks nonstop. The food was great but the food runner literally brought one pair of chopsticks and no shared plates for our whole group. Portland service standard is already so low, this place clearly doesn't have cocktail experience either as the cocktails were not good. Patrons are not mind readers so a little direction or more signage would probably help if you want them to do everything themselves.
