The Best Restaurants In Tokyo

"If you had a Japanese grandmother who wanted to make you a large bowl of chicken noodle soup, she’d (hopefully) make the equivalent of Afuri’s chicken and yuzu-based ramen. The place itself is only a counter (almost all ramen shops are) where you order classic ramen bowls from a ticketing machine in front and then basically surround the cooks. The broth here is light, but the grilled char-siu (pork) provides just enough substance and smokiness. Afuri is also in a cool neighborhood and is ideal for an on-the-go ramen stop when you still want to be able to move after you eat. Also, hangovers - it’s good for those." - josh layne

This trendy shop is in the Nakameguro area. A short walk from the station, This one's a Yuzu Shio ramen set and it packs a punch. Shio Ramen with grated Yuzu zest so you get that nice refreshing flavor. The set came with Aburi Chashudon (Flame-grilled chashu rice bowl) and it was a great bowl!

Google
I'm not a huge ramen fan and certainly not an expert, so I'm not sure how to rate this place. The presentation was gorgeous and I slurped it down quickly, fully satisfied as I rubbed my belly and exited the premises. I just wanted a quick dinner, and every time I walk by this place there's a line. No line this time, so I walked right in. It's got a sleek modern vibe. It's brightly lit and instead of the old fashioned ticket machines, there's a touchscreen kiosk. The noodles are tender, as is the chasu pork belly. The broth is rich and flavorful. And the eggs are perfect; but I wish they gave you more than half an egg. The yuzu gives it a hint of unique flavor. I'll probably go back. It's a perfect place, near Nakameguro station, for a quick and inexpensive meal.

Seats are a bit tight and close. Ramen tastes good, light, and fresh with yuzu-base elements. Taste fits female customers who prefer fresh taste of ramen.

Google
Vegetable Ramen Delight for Veggie Day This was our second visit to Afuri, and we were just as impressed as the first time we dined at their Ebisu location. I tried the veggie ramen and was pleasantly surprised by how flavorful and satisfying it was. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the vegetables were almost cooked to perfection. I especially enjoyed the daikon radish, asparagus, broccoli, fresh tomatoes, and mizuna greens. The noodles had a great al dente texture, and the garlic added a nice kick of flavor. While there was a slight burn on some of the asparagus, overall, this was a delicious and healthy meal. The service was friendly and courteous. The staff was helpful in answering my questions about the ingredients. I initially planned to order the summer special: cold yuzu shio ramen because of the poster located in front of the vending machine. But I changed my mind when I learned it was Vegetable Day in Japan. I also learned from my kid that Afuri is a place, a mountain actually. The restaurant's decor features umbrellas, which are perfect for rainy days and add a touch of charm. We had a great experience at Afuri Naka-Meguro. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was inviting.

Google
Food was only okay given its price, didn't quite enjoy the grilled chicken on rice; it was very dry. The dipping noodles were okay, didn't like the yuzu flavour but that's my personal preference. Service was good. One bowl per person minimum.

Google
Afuri Ramen in Nakameguro offers a delightful twist with their Rainbow Vegan Ramen 🌈. This dish is a vibrant explosion of colors and flavors, featuring a refreshing mix of fresh vegetables, tofu, and a rich, savory broth. The yuzu-infused broth adds a zesty touch that perfectly complements the tender noodles. The presentation is as impressive as the taste, making it a feast for both the eyes and the palate. While the experience is generally fantastic, the wait times can be a bit longer during peak hours, and the price might be a tad high. Still, the quality and unique flavor make it a standout choice for vegan ramen lovers. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Google
I have enjoyed majority of the ramen stores I been to, but this one was a bit surprising. I ordered the Yuzu Shio Ramen with Aburi Koro Pork Chashu Gohan on the side. The Yuzu Shio broth was lighter than your usual ramen broth. I was able to taste and drink more of this soup. The hint of Yuzu was great. I had the recommended thin noodle, which is thinner than the standard, and my family had the thicker noodles, which is closer to your standard. It was very well cooked as I like my noodles a bit harder and a bit more chew… hate soggy noodles. Ordered the set which comes with the small rice bowl. The grilled pork bowl was good, as it really fills you up, however it was really that special.

Google
solid ramen option among the many places around the city. The vegan ramen has great flavor and is served piping hot. The service is perfect, with the team offering a smiling and warm welcome.

Yelp
Afuri Ramen has several locations throughout Tokyo, with this one being conveniently located just a two minute walk from the Nakameguro station. It's a more quiet town, so you'll get the great quality of food without having to wait so long. We headed inside and placed our order on the vending machine that has an English option. There's only counter seating and it seats about 14 people, but everyone gets a nice view of the cooking space. The staff offered a paper apron, which I passed on, but I wish I would've wore it because I was slurping up the noodles. I ordered the Tsukemen yuzu-tsuyu bowl and my partner had the yuzu-shio ramen. Tsukemen is a dipping ramen with a flavorful chilled broth. This bowl, only offered thick noodles and cubed pork, while the other ramen was more customizable. That said, it had great flavorful and I end up really enjoying it. Tsuyu is a flavorful dipping sauce that's often used for soba, but it packs a salty and sweet punch. The yuzu-shio was a much lighter broth with a subtle hint of lemon. When ordering, it gave options for thin or thick noodles and pork or chicken. Overall, the bowls were cheap and tasted great. I liked the strong flavorful broth a bit more, but the uniqueness of the yuzu is enough reason to come by. The service is quick so you can pop in and out in a short time. Will definitely be back! Food: 7.9/10 Location: 8.4/10 Service: 8.1/10 Environment: 7.8/10

Yelp
Small ramen bar style! Easy to order, food came out fast and was delicious! Staff was friendly. Super close to Naka-meguro station!

Yelp
We stopped for a late lunch at this fast food ramen shop that offered ramen in a chicken- based broth. My yuzu shio ramen offered a clean palate, tasty broth and thin egg noodles that I favor. The sliced chicken paired well with the onsen tamago, thinly sliced greens and menma. There was a line to get in but it moved quickly. Once inside, you are directed to order through a vending machine, the order gets transmitted to the cook, and by the time you are seated at the counter, the food arrives within minutes. This is the place to go for a quick bite and delicious non-pork based noodles.

Yelp
After taking a stroll along the cherry blossom covered Meguro river, we were in the mood to for another meal. We couldn't help but notice the continuous line of people waiting outside of Afuri and decided to try out Afuri's ramen. All the food ordering is done through a vending machine that spits out tickets that you show to the staff once you're seated. We ordered their signature yuzu-infused shoyu ramen and the tsukemen. The ramen broth was light and citrusy. It was tasty but not my favorite ramen style. The star of the meal was the tsukemen. The tsukemen comes with a delicious umami broth sprinkled with sesame seeds and noodles on the side topped with half an egg, green onions, pork, bamboo, and nori. It was fun to try a yuzu-infused ramen, but I would highly recommend Afuri's tsukemen.

Yelp
In a country that is obviously full of many different kinds of ramen, AFURI stands out by using a yuzu infused broth that has become its signature claim to fame. Right by the beautiful Nakemeguro river and almost beneath the Nakemeguro station, AFURI is a cozy establishment but is larger than most ramen restaurants I've been to in Japan. Upon entering, you can use a cubby to store your personal items before proceeding to one of the many stools you can use around the central kitchen area. I got my ramen very quickly but I do wonder if that came with a bit of a cost - my half boiled egg was cold and I feel like the noodles themselves were not cooked as well. Though I love thin noodles in ramen, these did taste a little hard. The presentation of the ramen was great though and the chicken broth did not disappoint - the yuzu in it was not overpowering but the infusion of the said citrus made me finish the bowl to the last drop. In addition to the excellent broth, the well cooked pork slices and chopped green onions helped to offset the previous negatives I had mentioned. Although I don't think AFURI is worth going out of your way to, I do think it's something worth giving a shot if you're near one and happen to be hampering for a bowl of ramen - the broth alone is what makes it worthwhile to try.

Yelp
This was one of the ramen spots on our list of places to try but forgot until we walked past it. Luckily we decided to go in when we did because shortly after we'd gotten our seats, a flood of people came in afterwards. The restaurant was empty when we walked in so we were really lucky. You pick your seats, order through the machine at the front, go back to your seats, give your ticket to the servers, and wait for your food. I ordered the tsukumen while my husband ordered the yuzu/shoyu ramen. Both were so good. The tsukumen came with a yuzu flavored dipping sauce. I'm in love with all things noodles dipped in dipping sauce so this was so right up my alley. I did try the broth from my husband's yuzu/shoyu ramen and the flavor of that chicken broth was so light and citrus-y. I've fallen in love with yuzu inspired dishes and this was so tasty. I was slightly jealous because I wanted the ramen but I still wanted the tsukumen too. It's a refreshing change from the rich tonkotsu pork ramen I've been eating all over Japan.

Yelp
The best chicken-broth ramen you'll ever have. Seriously. The yuzu/shoyu ramen (the signature version) is clean, light, citrus-y, fresh, and eminently satisfying. You can get it in one of two forms - either light or w/ extra chicken-fat (go for the extra - it is *stellar*!) And, on that note, the tsukumen *is* stellarly umami (and also just plain stellar). It's my go-to at AFURI, and, of course, be sure to get your noodles cold! Incidentally, the asahi pours are _very_ carefully done, with just the right amount of head, and the cha-shu is very, very, *very* good In short, a place worth going to again, and again, and again :-)

Yelp
Afuri chain continues to blow my mind, every visit is consistently amazing and it's even more helpful to have locations that allow you to place your order on the screen to eliminate language barrier and keep the line moving. If it's your first time, a few tips would be to check the menu before, usually someone has posted a helpful cheat sheet on here to explain some of the options. Try not to ask too many questions, be respectful that a lot of people come in during their lunch break and looking for a quick, quiet place to wind down. Every location is unique to the neighborhood but this location is clean, water always refilled and there isn't too much traffic flow. Most of all, enjoy every slurp, you'll dream about it every time you crave ramen :)))

Yelp
First time trying a Yuzu ramen. Ordered their specialty Yuzu ramen, their charsu rice (came as a set) and their spicy yuzu tseukemen. OMG, the flavors are least expected but in a great way. The yuzu broth is light, citrusy and refreshing, the charsu rice has a hint of citrus/yuzu, and the spicy yuzu tseukemen is intense! If you're used to the rich tonkotsu broth then the spicy yuzu tseukemen fits closer to that profile. If you're in for a warm and simple and refreshing taste then their special yuzu ramen is for you. You absolutely should get a set with the charsu rice coz the charsu rice has a hint of citrus that I absolutely love. Try all three for different experiences (my wife and I finished them all)! We will absolutely come back next time we visit the Meguro river!

Yelp
Probably one of the only ramen bowls that I ever completely finished. Seriously. I opted for the yuzu/shoyu ramen and it was amazing. You have to try this place at least once. It's worth the wait!

Yelp
I am often in Yokohama and my palettes are used to crushing those really thick, heavy, fatty, salty and oh so delicious ramen that would get you paralyzed. True story... So having ramen at Afuri is like going on a fat-free diet with the same deliciousness level with some citrus-y flavor that could get you refreshed and help you digest - or better "hide", the amazing slice of pork that caused you to cheat. Aww... love it!! PS. I savage meat so didn't try (probably never) Vegan Ramen. That's quite good to see. I don't think I've ever been anywhere that has those.

Yelp
Very unique!! The broth is lemon chicken flavor and has a very different taste to it! Noodles were good and pork is grilled on the spot!! Would definitely recommend trying it once! Something you can't get in America if you're visiting!!

Yelp
「Yelp 100 Challenge 2016 - 東京」#11 AFURI specializes in a healthier style of ramen that uses chicken broth and yuzu citrus, and even the ramen noodles themselves feel less heavy. That said, I'd skip the ramen--it's not bad, just unmemorable. What you really want is the yuzu tsukemen. This is a bowl of heaven with a side of yuzu-flavored dipping sauce. The bowl contains treats like kakuni char siu (braised pork belly chunks), fresh mizuna greens, menma, a soft-boiled egg, and yuzu citrus peel on top of AFURI's uniquely chewy yet springy noodles. They're wonderfully toothsome and taste amazing with the tart yuzu dipping sauce. Once you've finished dipping the noodles, make sure to ask for スープ割り ("soup wari"), a bit of broth that's added to the concentrated dipping sauce so you can drink it. The broth actually magnifies the sour and savory yuzu flavor of the dipping sauce and makes it EVEN BETTER. 3.5-stars for the nice but unmemorable ramen, 5-stars for the addicting yuzu tsukemen.

Yelp
If you like rich tonkotsu ramen (pork stock ramen) this place may not be to your liking. Their soup stock is made of fish flakes and dried sardines. It is on the lighter side of the scale compared to other rich ramen stocks. Their signature bowl is infused with Yuzu citrus. It tastes quite unique & refreshing but I found it a bit too sour for my liking. I got a feeling that this place is one of those you "love it or hate it" restaurants
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
It's a great place it you want ramen without pork. Believe me, that's not easy to do in Japan, where pork reigns supreme. Silky chicken broth base and the option to add chicken breast. If you're looking for the must authentic ramen, this isn't it. But if you want tasty, pork free ramen, this is your spot. Order through the machine and then wait for counter space. This is a good spot for those on the go.

Yelp
Afuri ramen has been a staple in my diet since living in Japan - unique in its ability to not cause such an uncomfortable 'ramen hangover' with its lighter broth and seemingly complex flavors. The yuzu-ramen is refreshing in both taste and smell, topped with a perfectly cooked boiled egg, bamboo shoot, crunchy nori, and a hunk of smoked pork. ADDICTIVE in all senses. And when feeling especially health conscious, you can always opt for the vegan ramen! Special in its selection of local mountain vegetable toppings and thin noodles. If you are a ramen aficionado like I am, Afuri will most definitely top your list of favorite ramen-yas in Tokyo.

Yelp
Very great. The orange/lemon flavored one (柚子) is very special and is different from others. Must taste it. 很好吃!尤其柚子湯頭,跟別家比很有特色。

Yelp
Great place, especially because they have VEGAN RAMEN. As a vegetarian it has been quite difficult in Tokyo, and this is the first place I have come across that has a vegan option (apart from the all-vegan restaurants). As my boyfriend is a meat-eater, this was perfect. Truly delicious and although not cheap, it's still affordable. I can highly recommend Afuri!

Yelp
I've had two different bowls here and they were both delectable. love the layout, love watching them torch the pork, love the efficiency, and love the music (i was there during a dub set). outstanding, especially for a chain

Yelp
cheap and delicious. even the smell of the broth is delicious. its pretty different from tonkotsu, but i like their broth more personally. its probably not gonna be just another ramen shop you tried since its different from now dominant tonkotsu broth. definitely worth a try.
