"Louisville Slugger Field's neighbor, Against the Grain, is a brewery/smokehouse combo located in a former train station. With names like “Citra Ass Down” and “Fast Thymes at Ridgemont Rye”, one could wonder if ATG used up all their creativity with naming their beers. Fortunately for everyone, they didn’t. The seriously delicious beers are matched with an inventive and perfectly executed menu, including vegetarian options that would make even a carnivore drool. With growlers to go, you can leave with more than just a full stomach." - Fieldtrip

The staff was very friendly and the service was also really great. The atmosphere was great as we sat outside with our dogs! We have Great Danes so outdoor seating is important to us. The staff even brought out water bowls for us. I love that. The bad part of this review comes with the food. The tacos were $15 and they were the smallest skimpiest tacos I’ve had. We also ordered a salad and it didn’t come with onions or avocados like the menu said it did. The prices were way too high for very subpar food and portions. Also the beer was room temperature. Not a good food experience, just a vibe to sit.

Built into the ballpark but accessible from the street even during off season. Found parking on the street in front but there’s some paid parking in front as well. Plenty of space and seating. Good amount of beer and drink options. Mexican lager was good. Food was decent. Wings were crispy. Wrap was ok. Beer cheese was not my taste. Service was great and our server was very cool and had a great attitude.

Google
Really cool place to grab a drink and something for lunch I’d say. We didn’t eat dinner but came for lunch and it was great. I was able to customize my chicken sandwich without the bun and hubby got the pulled pork sandwich and we shared the tater tots. It was just enough for the both of us! Nice that parking was really close and free. Views of the stadium are super cool too!

Google
Wow I was really surprised at the top tier service from the staff to the great vibes and food I was beyond satisfied, especially after trying the grilled beyond burger I’m a vegan and this will be on my list of places to go for a burger! Amazing! I’m glad I asked the history of the restaurant thanks to waiter MIKE (amazing person) so much I had to try two days In a row I had the experience of having Tate as a waiter his service was phenomenal as well amazing!!!

Google
The food was great. The Philly, BBQ burger, and totchos were all excellent. However, the Knit Wit wheat beer was disappointing; it tasted more like an IPA. The open seating was also confusing; signage indicating whether to seat ourselves would be helpful, as several parties seemed unsure.

Google
We got the Pork Belly on a Stick for an appetizer & it was fantastic! We got the Weird Al-Buquerque burger (a complimentary kick of heat to the beef), the Coal Miner's Brunch burger (sweet while being savory), for our entrees. An Old Fashioned & a Root Beer Float. The service was great & the food was even better!!

Google
I stopped by this restaurant for lunch on a weekday and had a great experience. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, with a good selection of beers to choose from. The food menu isn't particularly impressive, but they've got the usual staples like burgers, wraps, and wings. What really made our visit stand out was the quiet and peaceful atmosphere, which made it easy to catch up and converse. The lack of loud music was a refreshing change of pace. Overall, it's a solid spot to grab a bite and enjoy some good company. I'd definitely recommend it for a low-key lunch or gathering.

Google
Worst service I’ve ever had. Wanted to order dinner and another beer but I never had a chance. Nobody ever acknowledged me after I ordered my first beer. For reference there are four people at the bar and eight people total in the establishment. Had to ask how much I owed for the beer so I could pay.

Yelp
I had great time with my group, Louisville Girls Pint Out for this Brunch day. They do offer Brunch from 11 am to 2 pm. They have good menu which I had hard time to decide but I give a try that I never had which was Chicken and Waffle. It was sooooo good! Then I had beer called Sol-Lee Ginger (I think that how it spell) with splash of orange juice. It was delicious. I would love to come back because their upstairs room was so neat and very open space which I enjoyed it. The service was good and it can be slow but just give them a time. But it is all worth it.

Yelp
My favorite neighborhood bar - this place is legit! Great beer selection, amazing staff, seasonal craft cocktails and a legit burger that is one of the best in Lou. Come for the neighborhood vibe or to play board games with your friends - stay for happy hour prices and great food! (Maybe I said that backwards, but depends on what you are looking for)

Renae D.

Yelp
My friend & I loved our lunch here. We went around 12:30pm on a Sunday. We sat at the bar but were the only ones there for a little bit but closer to 1:30pm people starting coming in. They have an awesome happy hour. A couple all day & a few that start at 4pm.. The pretzel appetizer was huge & we loved the beer cheese. We both got the Dirty Burger & the "not so special" sauce on the side. It was so good! One of the better burgers we both have had in Louisville for a while. I normally ask for one Patty if it comes with two but they were thin & the perfect size. Everything is sold Al la carte so it can get pricey but you can easily share the sides to cut down on cost. Our server Kansas was awesome. So chill & we enjoyed it that much more because of her. She was happy to give her favorite recommendations (she mentioned the Brussel sprouts were awesome) definitely trying those next time. She let us pick out a free sticker! If you check in on Yelp that is their offer :) Oh! Last but not least, Their beer. They have a great variety & even some for purchase to take home. Wether a single or a four pack. I brought a single Sol Mate home for my husband to try bc We liked it so much (& I'm not even a beer drinker) if that says anything. I got their house margarita & it was pretty good. I drank it all & I hardly ever do. Definitely recommend checking it out sometime.

Yelp
The first time I went here I immediately fell in love because of the DaeBak burger. I crave that burger. It's so tasty! It's Soooo DaeBak Burger - Two beef patties griddled, pepper jack cheese, bbq glaze, sesame kimchi slaw, and gochujang aioli. One of the other times I tried The Weird Al-Buquerque. It's okay but it doesn't touch how delicious the DaeBak burger is. It's a smaller place so you'd think you'd have to wait. I've never had the first issue here. From ordering to finding a place to sit(inside or outside) to how fast your food comes out to how awesome the employees are... it's always awesome! Kudos to Against the Grain for planting the flag in this location. It just works! They have a variety of burgers, sides(onion rings and sprouts are the choices), and a few appetizer-like pub foods. The Highlands has transformed so much over the years that it's hard to always know what's good and what isn't. After a few years of AtG being in the Highlands, I think it's safe to say this place is here to stay. Whether you're doing a meal or drinks or drinks with apps, this place is the spot!

Yelp
Pretty good. The food is good, but a bit pricey. I didn't like their fries. Also nothing comes with fries and you have to pay like 4 dollars to add them which was a bummer. It's worth trying, but it just wasn't my favorite.

Devan M.

Yelp
The best neighborhood bar Best service. Best people. Best beer on Bardstown road. Great ambiance. Good for kids.

Heather M.

Yelp
This is one of those places that I've seen and passed up many times over the years and finally got around to it right before the start of Burger Week 2021. I went here mistakenly thinking the Burger Week launch party was taking place. Turns out it was at ATG at Slugger Field lol. I did stick around for their Happy Hour specials before heading to the other location. I like the $4 beer and $3 mystery shot during Happy Hour. They also sell Margs here to go as well and I have yet to try. Although I have had their burger at their other location, I have yet to try other food here. I do like this location on Bardstown Rd even though I hate street parking. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and a great environment. I do like that it is smaller than the main location. I have yet to see the upstairs of this place. This place has some of the best Happy Hour specials in the city and I come here for them when I'm in the area.

Emory B.

Yelp
Good food! My husband got the swayze burger and it was delicious! Wings and brussels were good. Only complaint is that it was pricey. Burger was 13$ which isn't outrageous, but it didn't come w fries so that added 4$. Making his meal 17$ which I believe is pricey for casual bar food. Food was good though!

Cortney K.

Yelp
Stopped by ATG Public House for the first time Sunday as we were craving a burger and saw they had it on their menu. The bartender/server was very friendly and I saw we had at least a cook /food runner in the back so these ladies were hustling. We tried the pretzel with pimento cheese (they offer mustard but the pimento is just tooo good). The pretzel was soft on the inside and crispy hot on the outside. Delicious! Their smokehouse burger was a double patty with bacon and cheese, and I couldn't stop eating it. The soft bun and pickles, made it a great lunch spot. They offer almost all their beers as well, so it's almost like you're downtown at ATG. All around a good spot for a burger and beer.

Kelly M.

Yelp
I had the Dirty Burger medium well, no onions. Really good, not greasy, two 1/4 pound patties with a lot of flavor from the grill. Good Hawaiian style bun and nice special sauce.

Lou S.

Yelp
We were in Louisville for the holidays and were looking for a great burger and we found it here. We had The Weird Al-buquerque and a Dirty Burger and both were amazing. The highlight of the meal was the sides. The Potato Salad was great but the Brussels Sprouts were out of this world. We will be back again when we are back in Louisville.

Randall F.

Yelp
Awesome beer. Great food. Awesome location. Have been many times and love it. It's a must do when in town.

Rhianna S.

Yelp
Love the vibe of the place! Great service and burgers were so good and juicy! Fries were sooo good

Yelp
**This review is for our food order, I will update when I try the beer** We were hitting the road on the 2nd to last leg of our cross country road trip to ring in the new year. We are always down to check out a local brewery so before we hit the road we decided to grab some (#thankscovid) take out food and beer from Against the Grain. I was excited to see they had vegan options on the menu so I went with the Dirty Vegan burger. My excitement ended when I opened the to-go box and realize they must have given me the Clean Vegan. The description for the Dirty Vegan said it came with topped with vegan cheese, pickles, lettuce, onions, mustard and ketchup. Unfortunately mine arrived with shredded lettuce and three onion shreds and nothing else. My husband also added the jerk chickpea salad to the order as a surprise. I took the first bite and was surprised to find it was cold, not a bad thing just looking at it I was expecting it to be warm. I did really like the flavor and spice of the salad. I am grateful my husband added that to the order because my "Clean Vegan" would have left me hungry.

Bradley A.

Yelp
Small cozy pub with nice beer selection and food. Burgers were solid (bacon cheeseburger and Mew Mexico burger). Two burgers, a basket of fries, Diet Pepsi and one pint for $45 seemed a bit steep but I'm guessing this is the new normal post Covid.

Sheri S.

Yelp
Delicious burgers?? Delicious beer? Excellent hospitality? The answer to all of these is YES! You must try this great place!

Sydney M.

Yelp
The first need to know is this- you order at the bar, pay at the bar, etc. I don't think there are any signs in there that clarify that so that's good information to know. Basically, don't expect overly friendly service or any sort of help if you do stop in here. However, this burger... I still think about this burger. It was probably one of the best I've had in Louisville which is saying a lot. I also feel like for the size of the burger and the amount of food you get, the prices were very reasonable! It really is a "serve yourself" place...at least that was the case when I went. The five stars is simply because of the food and the prices. Come to this location as it is small and kind of hidden (the best places are)!

Yelp
Had a killer time on a Tuesday at Against the grain public house!! We decided to check out a new place and wanted a good burger and beer and I couldn't be happier that we chose this little spot! Shotgun style bar inside with great against the grain beer choices! Our waitress was super friendly and attentive so that was a great start! Limited menu which I like because I'm here for the beer lol even though it's limited the burger was amazing!! Cooked to perfection with melty warm white cheddar cheese. The bun was airy and light and the sauce was a great complement. I'd go back just for the burger! Fries crispy and shoestring, also delicious! My favorite part of this gem was the lounge upstairs... it was my kinda spot! Rustic and vintage vibes with the walls covered with patrons pictures, fun board games to enjoy, and just a really cool spot to enjoy some drinks and good with friends. Thanks for a great time Public House, we will definitely be back soon!!

Michael R.

Yelp
This is a fun location for a couple of beers and solid bar food. Buffalo wings were tasty, and the chicken wrap was solid as was the Brussels Sprouts side. Beers were solid and it's a laid-back place to hang out on a rainy afternoon! The Loo-a-vuhl Pale was the best of these-light with a decent hop profile (sorry that was a little craft beer snobbery).

Eugene D.

Yelp
My first experience at Against the Grain was the downtown location, and it was one of my favorite places to visit before it closed. Me and my bestfriend decided to check Public House out, and I'm glad we did. I'm a tequila guy so I went with the house Margarita (Mango flavor) and it was exactly what I needed on a Thursday night. Looking the menu, everything sounded pretty good do it was tough to choose for the both of us. I decided to go with the The Country Ham melt & fries. My friend got the Dirty Burger and Jerk wings. The sandwich was pretty satisfying, and the Granny Smith apple slices gave it sweet taste. My friend said the burger was the best burger he's ever had. The Jerk wings was a nice appetizer to hold over while waiting on the food. Upstairs is a more intimate dine-in, hangout, lounge area. I recommend this place for a guys, ladies, or just a random night out. The service was pretty good, and I'm looking forward to coming back.

Ronado G.

Yelp
Small little spot with great beer and amazing food! Their food is delicious elevates bar food. The sides of brussel sprouts was a nice touch! Also the Beyond Meat option was great. The buns were perfectly toasted. The staff was friendly and prices reasonable. I'll definitely be returning next time I'm in Louisville!

Bill C.

Yelp
Beer great...usual wonderful ATG kraft beers...good pub food...cute little bar and love Kansas!!

Tricia S.

Yelp
My husband and I just got into Louisville and wanted some dinner and drinks. Ordered burgers here and they were SO GOOD. Everything tasted fresh, not frozen. Order arrived quickly, Jade our bartender was very attentive. Don't walk by this gem.

Kelsey P.

Yelp
We walked to Public House to pick up a few beers and I was surprised at the variety of carry out options (food, cocktails, beer, etc.). There is a table out front and spots on the ground to show patrons where to stand to practice safe distancing. The woman working wore a face mask and gloves. When she gave us our beers and the receipt to sign, she made sure to note that everything had been sanitized. The beers were great! Four tall boys for about $12. I hope to come back for a vodka lemonade soon!

Erin K.

Yelp
I absolutely hate giving negative reviews to local businesses but this experience was not great. My husband and I stopped in mid afternoon for some lunch and a beer. The bartender was absolutely great. He recommended some beers and was just super friendly. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. First, the bar stools were incredibly uncomfortable, definitely not something that you could sit on all night. Second, I really wanted to try their Nashville hot chicken and my husband and I were going to share a basket of truffle fries. When we went to order we were informed that they were out of chicken and truffle seasoning. I ended up with a turkey burger and regular fries. My husband had the birria burger. I am kind of shocked that people are saying these are the best burgers. The patties were clearly the frozen kind and the fries, while nice and crispy, had no seasoning. I asked for honey mustard to dip and they were out of that as well. Unfortunately, we won't be back here but I do look forward to trying some of the other ATG ventures around town.

Rachel M.

Yelp
such a cool little spot on Bardstown Rd! I love the atmosphere, it's very dim and cozy. Such a perfect place to get dinner and a couple beers with friends. Now onto the food! I've only been here once but I am so eager to go back. The fish sandwich was awesome. The batter was crisp, but the softness of the fish still shined through. It also had a slaw on it that really complimented. The onion rings were yummy as were the fries. I particularly liked that you could get an everything aioli! They have against the grain beers which are some of my fave local brews. I usually get the citra ass down, but if that's not your thing they have a lot of other quality choices.

Steve J.

Yelp
Good but uneven. Four of us went this evening and all enjoyed the food, drinks, and waitstaff. So, why the title? We started with a hot pretzel, $8 served with pimento cheese and spicy mustard. The pretzel was warm, salty and good and the cheese added complementary flavors. The uneven part was the food order. All ordered at one time and two of us ordered the dirty burger single patty, which is the special for burger week, at $6 ( $1 discount), one beef patty grilled and dressed with red onion, lettuce, pickles, and AtG secret sauce on a toasted bun. The other two ordered the chicken wings $10, A pound of chicken wings tossed in your choice of AtG BBQ, buffalo, buttery lemon pepper, cool ranch, or jerk rub served with house-made ranch or blue cheese crumbles and fresh celery and the Smokehouse burger $12, Two beef patties grilled, topped with American cheese and bacon, dressed with caramelized onions, house aioli and pickles on a toasted bun. The food was excellent - so what's the problem, you ask? Well, two of us received our food and the other two received their orders 15 minutes later, after the first two were practically finished. This is unacceptable. All entrees should be served together or a closely together as possible. It was also 15 minutes later that I went to the bar to remind the server of my beer flight. Was it busy? It was steady but it did not appear that it was overly so. Now for the beers - many of the ATG beers you know (or will know) and love, on draft, in pints or in a flight. Overall, the food and drinks were good but the service and food delivery was uneven. While our experience was a little bumpy, your mileage may vary.

Bob A.

Yelp
Good bar/beer. Margaritas on tap, very strong if you get it at the right time. Fast, friendly and efficient service. Laid back and easy going bar where you can have a conversation or watch the game and hear what's happening. If you want to have a conversation where you can plausibly deny what you heard, don't come hear. Lots of room upstairs if it's full downstairs, big chairs and a couch area. Love the on tap choices. Gotta come for that if nothing else. I'm not going to vouch for the food. Street parking, with two church parking lots just down the street. I enjoy the walk!

Joe B.

Yelp
Worth it if you're in the area. Not someplace I would recommend going out of your way. Solid good category. No stand outs

Amanda Z.

Yelp
If you are seeking an establishment that makes their own beer and it's delicious ... come here. Scott is welcoming, helpful and chill. Started with the Citra Ass Down IPA ... yum. We then ordered a 1/2 dozen wings and the Dirty Burger, both excellent. Great spot to enjoy the eclectic scene on Bardstown.

Payton H.

Yelp
Great service and better food!! Best Hazy IPA's I've had in town! 10/10 recommendation!

Anastasia A.

Yelp
In a hurry to close, can't get the order right, then bartender who messed it all up gets super aggressive and keeps the money and the food. We leave with no food and were still charged over $40. Contacted owners several times to get things handled properly. Didn't happen. Worst place in the city.

David S.

Yelp
I had no idea that burgers could be made of magical unicorn droppings and dreams. That is, until I had the Albuquerque burger. I can't accurately describe what my mouth experienced, but my brain was so excited that it packed a day pack, and walked down to the river because it didn't believe what we were experiencing. It came back after a brief break and we finished the burger. That meal gets a solid rating of - "I would sit naked on broken glass then bathe in rubbing alcohol" to eat that again. Definitely in my top 5 burgers I've ever had.

Amanda H.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday night for a casual evening out. I got a flight of beer with 4 tastings for a very reasonable price. My favorites were the peach sour and the milk stout. We also got a basket of truffle fries for $5 and some Buffalo wings. They also have really good deals for all day, like $1.50 for a tequila shot and $5 margs. What I loved most was the hometown feel of this bar - everyone who walked in seemed to know the bartender. I'll definitely be back!

Jessi W.

Yelp
Since Against the Grain's downtown location has remained closed throughout COVID, we've had to get their beers at Public House. Public House is pretty small and intimate, but the vibe is super chill, and the beers are great (I got their "Louisville" beer -- hazy pale ale -- this time, and it was really good). One of the cool things about Public House is their upstairs area. It's usually not busy, there's a bathroom up there, they've got games, books, etc. Public House's menu is limited, but they just added more options. I always recommend the Dirty Burger (the vegan burger is really good, too!). Don't skip the jerk fries! They are SO good. I wish I would have gotten pics of my food, but I completely forgot! No worries, though. I frequent Public House often, so I'll update with photos the next time I'm there!

Julia P.

Yelp
We're huge Against the Grain fans, so when it closed for Covid, it was depressing. BUT they have this little place! Menu is different from the motherboard but just as good. Love the truffle fries and Brussels are amazing... tried their new Caesar salad and it was kinda generic. Their Apple cranberry salad is unique and bomb.

tammy t.

Yelp
Delicious burgers! Top 5 of any I've had. Great beer too! Definitely recommend! Met friends here & was not disappointed!

Nora G.

Yelp
We actually were headed to the Against the Grain in downtown and didn't look beyond the gps. But we were pleasantly surprised that we found this location in an adorable area of town. And the small place was just what we needed besides a great burger! Skinny fries if you like those. We also tried the pretzel. Yum! Nice staff and we explored the upstairs too.

Allison M.

Yelp
I came here with my husband on a winter Saturday afternoon and we had a really enjoyable time. For those who want a quick summary, we (1) used the upstairs space where we could play the games we brought (they provide some too!) and sit on comfortable (but rather worn) couches, (2) liked the $5 bourbon sours, (3) were underwhelmed by the wings (fatty with little sauce) and soft pretzel (the parts that weren't burnt were good!), and (4) thought the upstairs restroom could benefit from some attention. My husband tried a couple of beers that he thought were average. My bourbon sours were perfect and had one of those gourmet cocktail cherries that make any drink better. The food here could use a face lift, although it is fairly priced which is a rarity these days. The upstairs in general feels a little forgotten and could use some TLC (especially the restroom). That said, we had a nice afternoon hanging out here and playing some games.

Hailee R.

Yelp
Very disappointed with our visit this year there was overpriced food and the quality has gone downhill. we used to look forward to coming here for trips and was a let down this year. the beers are okay, service was a little slow for how empty the inside was and food quality was poor.

Alex H.

Yelp
Not one to complain, especially from my favorite burger spot. But I picked up a carry out tonight and there wasn't any jerk seasoning on my fries. They tasted like they were deep fried an hour or two ago. Far from fresh. And it was such a small side compared to usual. My bbq sauce was also forgotten.

William S.

Yelp
We've been here a couple of times and today we got the Albuquerque Burger and the Smoke House Burger and a basket of fries with sea salt and truffle oil. Wow the burgers are amazing! Not dry not overly greasy just right. The fries are perfect. Good potato flavor with the right amount of salt and truffle flavor. Definitely have to try these out if you want a great burger.

Anna C.

Yelp
The burger and fries holy shit. One of the best I've had for sure. The service is really fast and friendly. Beer is also great. I love coming here for a quick drink after work, to watch games, or even just for a casual dinner. A real gem.

Regina M.

Yelp
Great burgers, the loaded fries were great and bartender gave great recommendations! Tried the pickle juice lemonade, fun drink!

Sarah H.

Yelp
These are COVID times, so keep that in mind. I think their menu is limited due to the virus. We ate outside. There was seating inside with adequate distancing. Everything was clean and hand sanitizer was available. There is a large plastic divider between the server and the customer. Only plastic or styrofoam dining wear, which makes sense. They place your order on a table when ready per the instructions; but they weren't busy and brought most food orders to the table. I got the cran-Apple salad without cheese. It was so delicious and light. The dressing was homemade. I ate every bit. We shared a basket of grippo fries, which probably could have fed four. I recommend buying a side of their ranch, homemade and awesome. The fries were served with two ketchups. My husband got the BLT......his words, "it was good, perfect distribution of bacon, lettuce, and tomato".

John J.

Yelp
This place is legit. The customer service is impeccable and the food is great. The menu is small but it's a small place and everything I've tried is really tasty. 12 ATG beers on draft as well as a margarita draft. If you're in the neighborhood you should give it a try.

Kristen F.

Yelp
Very good beer! The staff is very friendly. We like to stop in here if we are going down Bardstown road. We do want to stop in and try some food one day!

Laura W.

Yelp
Small food menu, but the burgers were absolutely delicious. Enjoyed a few beers and the shot of the day. I will definitely return if I'm back in the area.

Torrie S.

Yelp
The staff was not very accommodating or overly friendly. It appeared as if I was putting him out by my very presence. He was a nice enough guy, when he talked to me. When I asked if they had cider, he said "in there" and motioned for the fridge. Being from out of town, I am unfamiliar with their product and didn't see any in the fridge. So I sat down. He came over to take my order but he hadn't given me a menu. Apparently he had set one on the bar and I was supposed to see it and know it was for me. He seemed annoyed I hadn't done that. I wasn't sure he'd come back to the table so I approached the bar and he walked away to the other end without telling me to follow him. I saw that he walked to a register so I did. The gentleman who brought out my food was very nice, even though he forgot half of my order, he came back out and acknowledged it promptly. (But he had set down my sandwich and walked away without asking me any questions, so I didn't have a chance to ask about the missing item.). He corrected the issue quickly and was nice. When I went to pay at the bar the first gentleman rang it up, took my card, and left me with the device to leave a tip. He never said another word to me. I walked by him and out of the restaurant, never receiving a 'thank you', an acknowledgement, nothing. If you are not from Louisville, from the neighborhood, or known to these people, do not patronize this establishment.
